Stop memorizing strokes; start seeing components
The biggest efficiency win in the whole endeavor is refusing to memorize characters stroke by stroke as blind squiggles. A stroke is not a meaningful unit — it's like a pen-lift, not a letter. The meaningful units are components: the recurring blocks (氵, 女, 讠, 木, 心, 口…) that a few hundred characters share. There are only about 100–200 components that matter, and once you know them, a "new" character is usually just a new arrangement of blocks you already own.

Roughly 80–90% of characters are 形声字 (xíngshēngzì), built from a meaning half (the radical) and a sound half. The most efficient encoding of a new character is a one-line story that names both halves. Watch it work on 河 (hé, "river"):
- Meaning half: 氵 — the "three drops of water" (三点水, sān diǎn shuǐ), telling you this is about water.
- Sound half: 可 (kě) — telling you it sounds roughly like kě → hé (an honest drift; more on that below).
So 河 = "a water-thing that sounds like 可." One sentence, fully decomposed, instantly re-buildable. Do the same for its cousins and you get a family:

The story doesn't have to be etymologically true — it has to be memorable. For characters that aren't neat phonetic compounds, invent an associative image: 休 (xiū, "rest") is a person (亻) leaning against a tree (木); 明 (míng, "bright") is the sun (日) and moon (月) together. A vivid, slightly absurd image sticks far better than a "correct" but dull one.
累了就休息一下。

If you're tired, take a rest. (informal) — 休 = 亻 person + 木 tree: someone resting against a tree.
Drill inside high-frequency words, never alone
Here is the error that quietly wastes the most time: learning characters as isolated flashcards. A lone character often has a vague, slippery meaning — 生 (shēng) "alone" could mean born, raw, life, student, unfamiliar, or grow, and none of those pins down. Meet the same character inside a common word and it locks:
学生 / 生日 / 医生
xuésheng / shēngrì / yīshēng
student / birthday / doctor — 生 becomes concrete inside each word, and you gain three words at once.

Learning in words gives you three things simultaneously: the character, a real word you can actually use, and a model of how that character combines. That's triple the value of a naked flashcard. Review on a forgetting curve, not by cramming
Recognition of a character decays predictably: you forget most of what you "learned" today within a day or two unless you meet it again. Spaced repetition (SRS — Anki, Elon's review system, or any tool that reschedules a card just before you'd forget it) fights that curve directly. The principle: review each character at expanding intervals — a few hours, then a day, then three days, then a week — so each successful recall pushes the next review further out.
The contrast with cramming is stark. Twenty characters drilled fifty times each in one evening will be mostly gone by Friday. The same twenty, seen five times spread across two weeks, stay. Frequency of exposure over time beats intensity in one sitting — always.

Reinforce with production: typing or handwriting
Reading recognition and production (writing) are two different memories, and doing a little production locks in the recognition. You have two routes:
- Typing with a pinyin IME forces you to recall the pronunciation and then recognize the right character from a candidate list — cheap, fast, and how you'll actually write Chinese day to day.
- Handwriting by stroke order builds the deepest motor memory of the shape. It's slower and optional for pure reading, but nothing cements a character's structure like writing it a few times.
You don't need to hand-write every character you can read — recognition outpaces production for everyone, natives included. But writing your hardest characters a handful of times, and typing everything else, gives you the recognition boost at a fraction of the cost of hand-writing all of them.

Common Mistakes
1. Memorizing characters as raw strokes instead of components. A 13-stroke blur is unforgettable in the bad sense. Decompose first: 想 is 相 + 心, two parts you already know, not thirteen random moves.
❌ 把 想 当成十三笔乱画来背。
bǎ xiǎng dàngchéng shísān bǐ luàn huà lái bèi
Incorrect — memorizing 想 as thirteen random strokes.
✅ 想 = 相(音) + 心(意)。

2. Learning characters alone instead of inside common words. A lone 生 is a fog of meanings; 学生 / 生日 / 医生 make it concrete and hand you three words at once.
3. Cramming instead of spacing reviews. Fifty reps tonight lose to five reps spread across two weeks. Trust the forgetting curve and let an SRS schedule the reviews.
4. Reading the sound part as if it were the meaning. In 河, the 可 is there for the sound (kě→hé), not the meaning — 河 is not "a river you can approve of." Keep the two jobs straight.

Incorrect — treating the 可 in 河 as meaning. It's the sound half; 氵 carries the meaning.
