外 (wài): Outside

(wài) is the opposite of : where 里 marks the inside of a boundary, 外 marks everything outside / beyond it. Attach it after a noun for "outside that thing": 门外 (mén wài, outside the door), 窗外 (chuāng wài, outside the window), 城外 (chéng wài, outside the city), 国外 (guówài, abroad). Like every localizer it follows the noun and pairs with 在 and 有. There's one usage quirk worth flagging up front: bare 外 lives mostly inside compact set expressions (门外, 国外, 窗外), while the everyday standalone "outside" you'll say and hear constantly is the two-syllable 外面 / 外边.

The "outside" localizer: beyond the boundary

The core 外 is the space past the edge of something — outside a door, a window, a city wall. It plugs into the familiar 在-frame and 有-frame.

有人在门外等你。

yǒu rén zài mén wài děng nǐ

Someone's waiting for you outside the door. — 门外, just past the door.

窗外的风景美极了。

chuāng wài de fēngjǐng měi jíle

The scenery outside the window is gorgeous. — 窗外 modifies 风景 with 的.

城外有一大片草地。

chéng wài yǒu yí dà piàn cǎodì

There's a big stretch of meadow outside the city. — 有 + 城外.

Because 外 favors set phrases, some of the most useful vocabulary is bare-外 compounds you can learn whole:

PhrasePinyinMeaning
国外guówàiabroad / overseas
门外mén wàioutside the door
窗外chuāng wàioutside the window
户外hùwàioutdoors (as in activities)
课外kèwàiextracurricular
意外yìwàiunexpected / an accident (lit. "beyond intention")

他大学一毕业就去了国外。

tā dàxué yí bìyè jiù qù le guówài

He went abroad the moment he graduated from university. — 国外 = 'overseas', a fixed compound.

外面 / 外边: the everyday standalone word

When "outside" stands on its own — as a subject, or not glued to a specific noun — use 外面 (wàimian) or 外边 (wàibian). This is what you say for "it's cold outside," "someone's outside," "let's sit outside." Bare 外 cannot fill that slot alone.

外面很冷,多穿点儿衣服。

wàimian hěn lěng, duō chuān diǎnr yīfu

It's cold outside, put on more clothes. — 外面 as the standalone 'outside'.

外面有人敲门,你去看看是谁。

wàimian yǒu rén qiāo mén, nǐ qù kànkan shì shéi

Someone's knocking outside, go see who it is. — 外面 heads the existence clause.

💡
Rule of thumb: use bare 外 glued to a noun (门外, 国外, 窗外), but the free-standing "outside" — the subject of 很冷, 有人, 下雨 — is almost always 外面 or 外边, never bare 外.

外 vs 里: the boundary pair

外 and 里 are a matched inside/outside pair, and native speakers routinely set them against each other in a single sentence. Choosing the wrong one flips the meaning, so anchor them by the boundary: 里 = this side of it, 外 = beyond it.

屋里太闷了,我们到外面坐吧。

wū li tài mēn le, wǒmen dào wàimian zuò ba

It's stuffy indoors, let's go sit outside. — 屋里 (inside) contrasted with 外面 (outside).

孩子们在外面玩儿,我在屋里做饭。

háizimen zài wàimian wánr, wǒ zài wū li zuò fàn

The kids are playing outside while I cook indoors. — 外面 / 屋里 in balance.

Abstract 外: 以外 "besides / apart from"

Beyond space, 外 builds the abstract "besides / apart from / except" family with 以外 (yǐwài), often in the frame 除了 … 以外 (chúle … yǐwài), "apart from …". Here 外 no longer means a physical outside — it means "outside the set just mentioned." This construction has its own 除了…以外 page; a taste:

除此以外,我没有别的要求了。

chú cǐ yǐwài, wǒ méiyǒu bié de yāoqiú le

Apart from this, I have no other requests. — 除此以外 = 'besides this'.

除了他以外,大家都同意了。

chúle tā yǐwài, dàjiā dōu tóngyì le

Everyone agreed except him. — 除了 … 以外 sets him 'outside' the group.

Common Mistakes

1. Fronting 外. The localizer follows its noun.

❌ 他在外门抽烟。

Incorrect — the localizer follows the noun: 门外, not 外门.

✅ 他在门外抽烟。

tā zài mén wài chōu yān

He's smoking outside the door. — 门 first, then 外.

2. Using bare 外 as a standalone subject. The free-standing "outside" is 外面 / 外边.

❌ 外很冷,别出去。

Incorrect — bare 外 can't stand alone; use 外面很冷.

✅ 外面很冷,别出去。

wàimian hěn lěng, bié chūqu

It's cold outside, don't go out. — 外面 for standalone 'outside'.

3. Saying 国里 for "domestic". The opposite of 国外 (abroad) is the fixed 国内, not ❌国里.

❌ 这个牌子在国里买不到。

Incorrect — 'within the country' is 国内, never 国里.

✅ 这个牌子在国内买不到。

zhè ge páizi zài guónèi mǎi bú dào

You can't buy this brand domestically. — 国内 (with 内), the counterpart of 国外.

4. Picking the wrong side — 门里 vs 门外. They're both grammatical, so the error is meaning, not form: 门里 is inside the door, 门外 is outside it.

❌ 我在门里等你。

Wrong side if you mean 'outside' — 门里 is INSIDE the door; for 'outside' you need 门外.

✅ 我在门外等你。

wǒ zài mén wài děng nǐ

I'll wait for you outside the door. — 门外, beyond the door.

  • Bare 外 lives in set compounds (国外 abroad, 户外 outdoors, 课外 extracurricular); the everyday standalone "outside" is 外面 / 外边.
  • 外 and 里 are a boundary pair — 屋里 (inside) vs 外面 (outside); pick by which side of the edge you mean.
  • Abstract 以外 / 除了…以外 means "besides / apart from," setting something outside a set.
  • The fixed opposite of 国外 (abroad) is 国内 (domestic), with formal 内 — never ❌国里.

  • 边 / 面 / 头: The Localizer SuffixesHSK 2The single-character localizers 上/下/里/外/前/后 take a suffix — 边 (bian, colloquial), 面 (mian, neutral), or 头 (tou, colloquial/northern) — to become standalone position nouns: 上面/上边/上头 'the top', 里面/里边/里头 'the inside'; bare 上/里 attach directly to a noun (桌子上) but need a suffix to stand alone (上面).
