边 / 面 / 头: The Localizer Suffixes

The bare localizers 上/下/里/外/前/后/左/右 are often too "light" to stand on their own — they cling to a preceding noun (桌子 "on the table," 书包 "in the bag") and are pronounced with a neutral tone. To make them into an independent position noun — "the top," "the inside," "the front" as things you can point to — you add one of three suffixes: (bian), (mian), or (tou). So 上 becomes 上面/上边/上头 "the top," 里 becomes 里面/里边/里头 "the inside." For English speakers the payoff is a clean split: a bare localizer welds to its noun, while a suffixed one can head its own phrase — "on top there's dust" needs 上面, not bare 上.

The three suffixes and their register

and are essentially interchangeable and register-neutral to colloquial; leans very slightly more written, slightly more spoken, but you can swap them freely in most contexts. is distinctly colloquial and northern, and it attaches to only some roots.

Root
  • 边 (colloquial)
  • 面 (neutral)
  • 头 (colloq./northern)
上边上面上头 ✓
下边下面下头 ✓
里边里面里头 ✓
外边外面外头 ✓
前边前面前头 ✓
后边后面后头 ✓
左 / 右左边 / 右边(左面/右面, rare)✗ 左头 / 右头

Notice the last row: 左/右 take (左边/右边) but essentially never take 头. And the disyllabic localizers 旁边, 中间, 对面 are already complete — you never add another suffix to them.

桌子上面放着一台电脑。

zhuōzi shàngmian fàng zhe yì tái diànnǎo

There's a computer on top of the table. (neutral)

冰箱里面还有一些牛奶。

bīngxiāng lǐmian hái yǒu yìxiē niúnǎi

There's still some milk inside the fridge. (informal)

书就在你后边的书架上。

shū jiù zài nǐ hòubian de shūjià shang

The book is on the shelf right behind you. (informal)

外头下雨了,带把伞吧。

wàitou xià yǔ le, dài bǎ sǎn ba

It's raining outside — take an umbrella. (informal, northern flavor with 头)

💡
Pick your suffix by register and rhythm: is the safe neutral default, is warmly colloquial, is casual and northern-sounding (里头, 外头, 上头). All three mean the same thing — this is a flavor choice, not a meaning choice.

Bare localizer vs suffixed: when the suffix is required

Here is the rule that trips learners up. When the localizer attaches to a noun, you use the bare form — no suffix: 桌子 "on the table," 书 "in the book," 门 "outside the door." But when the localizer stands alone as the subject or topic — "on top," "inside," "outside" with no noun in front — you must add a suffix.

桌子上有很多灰。

zhuōzi shang yǒu hěn duō huī

There's a lot of dust on the table. (neutral) — bare 上, attached to 桌子.

上面有很多灰,你擦一下。

shàngmian yǒu hěn duō huī, nǐ cā yíxià

There's a lot of dust on top — give it a wipe. (informal) — standalone 上面 needs the suffix.

里面太热了,我们坐外面吧。

lǐmian tài rè le, wǒmen zuò wàimian ba

It's too hot inside — let's sit outside. (informal) — both stand alone, both suffixed.

前面堵车了,我们绕路吧。

qiánmian dǔchē le, wǒmen rào lù ba

There's a jam up ahead — let's take a detour. (informal) — standalone 前面.

你往里边走一点。

nǐ wǎng lǐbian zǒu yìdiǎn

Move a bit further in. (informal) — 里边 stands alone after 往.

💡
Test: is a noun sitting directly in front of the localizer? If yes, bare form (桌子). If the localizer is on its own, add 边/面/头 (上面). This is the single most reliable way to decide.

Common Mistakes

1. Standalone localizer with no suffix. On its own, "on top / inside" needs a suffix.

❌ 上有一只猫。

Incorrect — a standalone localizer needs a suffix: 上面有一只猫.

✅ 上面有一只猫。

shàngmian yǒu yì zhī māo

There's a cat on top.

2. Attaching 头 to 左/右. 左/右 take 边, never 头.

❌ 洗手间在左头。

Incorrect — 左/右 do not take 头; say 左边.

✅ 洗手间在左边。

xǐshǒujiān zài zuǒbian

The restroom is on the left.

3. Adding a suffix to an already-complete localizer. 旁边/中间/对面 never take another 边/面.

❌ 我坐在你旁边面。

Incorrect — 旁边 is already complete: 你旁边.

✅ 我坐在你旁边。

wǒ zuò zài nǐ pángbiān

I'm sitting next to you.

4. Suffixing the localizer when a noun precedes it. With a noun attached, use the bare form.

❌ 猫在桌子上面睡觉。

Marginal — with 桌子 attached, bare 桌子上 is more natural: 猫在桌子上睡觉.

✅ 猫在桌子上睡觉。

māo zài zhuōzi shang shuìjiào

The cat is sleeping on the table.

Key Takeaways

  • Add 边 / 面 / 头 to a bare localizer (上/下/里/外/前/后) to make a standalone position noun: 上面 "the top," 里面 "the inside."
  • is neutral, is colloquial, is colloquial/northern and only pairs with some roots (里头, 外头, 上头 — but not 左头/右头).
  • Attached to a noun → bare form (桌子上); standing alone → suffixed (上面).
  • 左/右 take 边 (左边/右边), not 头; and 旁边/中间/对面 are already complete — never re-suffix them.
