一方面…另一方面… (yìfāngmiàn…lìng yìfāngmiàn) is the connector you use to weigh two aspects of a single situation. 方面 means "side, aspect, angle," so the frame literally lines up "one aspect… the other aspect…" — you look at a matter from two directions and present both. English translates it "on the one hand… on the other hand…," but there's a crucial difference in feel: the English idiom usually sets up a contrast or a dilemma, whereas the Chinese most often presents two complementary points that are both true at the same time. It is decidedly formal and written — the language of essays, editorials, reports, and reasoned argument, not of casual chat.

Structure: 一方面 … 另一方面 …

The frame opens each half of the thought: 一方面 + Consideration¹，另一方面 + Consideration². The second half characteristically takes 另 ("the other") before its 一方面, and the second clause frequently adds 也 ("also") or 还 ("moreover") to underline that both points stack up together.

Complementary aspects, not opposites

This is the insight that makes the pattern click. The two 方面 are usually two co-existing truths — both hold, and together they give a fuller picture. They are not necessarily in tension. English "on the other hand" leans toward "but"; the Chinese leans toward "and also, from another angle."

网络一方面方便了生活，另一方面也带来了不少问题。

Reach for 一方面…另一方面 when you're analyzing — laying out the considerations behind a choice, a policy, or a judgment. If you're just chatting about someone doing two physical things at once, that's 一边…一边; if you're stacking two qualities of a thing, that's 又…又. 一方面 is the essay register of the three.

Register and the 另

In careful writing the second half is 另一方面; the 另 is what native writers expect. In relaxed speech you will sometimes hear the 另 dropped (一方面…一方面…), and that is tolerated — but in anything you write, or any formal register, keep the 另. This is a genuinely elevated connector: it belongs to 书面语 (written language), so it can sound stiff if you drop it into a casual conversation where a plain 又 or 而 would do.

政府一方面要发展经济，另一方面要保护环境，两者都不能忽视。

zhèngfǔ yìfāngmiàn yào fāzhǎn jīngjì, lìng yìfāngmiàn yào bǎohù huánjìng, liǎng zhě dōu bù néng hūshì

The government must develop the economy on one hand and protect the environment on the other; neither can be neglected. (formal)

Common Mistakes

1. Using it for a plain "but." A simple contrast between two clauses is 但是, not 一方面…另一方面. The 一方面 frame needs two genuine aspects of one matter, not a wish-versus-obstacle.

❌ 我想去，一方面没有时间。

Incorrect — this is a simple 'but', so it needs 但是, not a lone 一方面.

✅ 我想去，但是没有时间。

wǒ xiǎng qù, dànshì méiyǒu shíjiān

I'd like to go, but I don't have time. (neutral)

2. Dropping the 另 in writing. In formal or written register the second half must be 另一方面.

❌ 一方面要工作，一方面要照顾家。

Marginal — acceptable in casual speech, but writing wants 另一方面 on the second half.

✅ 一方面要工作，另一方面要照顾家。

yìfāngmiàn yào gōngzuò, lìng yìfāngmiàn yào zhàogù jiā

On one hand I must work, on the other I must look after the family. (formal)

3. Using this formal connector for casual simultaneous actions. Describing someone eating and watching TV with 一方面…另一方面 sounds absurdly bureaucratic.

❌ 他一方面吃饭，另一方面看电视。

Incorrect register — for two physical actions at once, use 一边…一边.

✅ 他一边吃饭一边看电视。

tā yìbiān chīfàn yìbiān kàn diànshì

He eats while watching TV. (informal)
