Conversion between Word Classes

Conversion lets a form function in a new word class without an overt derivational suffix. Catalan can use an infinitive as a noun (sopar → el sopar), an adjective for a person or group (jove → els joves), or an adjective adverbially (parlar clar). Participles move especially easily among verbal, adjectival, and nominal uses.

The visible form may stay the same, but its grammar does not. A converted noun can take an article and sometimes a plural; an adjective used as a noun still marks gender and number; an adjective used adverbially is normally fixed in masculine singular; a participle in a compound tense behaves differently from a result adjective. Distribution, not spelling alone, tells you the category.

Infinitives: still verbal or now nominal?

An infinitive can head a verbal clause while the whole clause fills a noun-like position. In Fumar perjudica la salut, fumar is the predicate of an understood generic subject and still has verbal meaning. It can take its own object or complements: Llegir el contracte amb calma és imprescindible. No article is required merely because English uses a gerund in translation.

This clausal use is developed further under infinitives as subjects.

Llegir el contracte amb calma evita molts malentesos.

Reading the contract carefully prevents many misunderstandings.

No m'agrada haver d'esperar sense saber què passa.

I do not like having to wait without knowing what is happening.

Other infinitives have become lexical nouns. El sopar, el dinar, el berenar name meals; el deure can name a duty and its plural els deures commonly means homework; el poder can name power. These words accept determiners, adjectives, and plural marking like nouns.

El sopar ja és a taula, però la Júlia encara no ha arribat.

Dinner is already on the table, but Júlia has not arrived yet.

Aquesta setmana tenim dos sopars de feina seguits.

This week we have two work dinners in a row.

A third zone contains expressive or descriptive nominalized infinitives: el seu caminar pausat, el parlar de la vall, al meu entendre. These focus on a manner, a variety of speech, or a conventional viewpoint. They are more restricted than ordinary count nouns and often have a (literary) or (formal) flavor.

El seu caminar pausat contrastava amb les presses de tothom.

Her unhurried way of walking contrasted with everyone else's haste.

Catalan does not normally place el before every infinitival subject by imitation of Spanish. In neutral formal prose, an abstract action is often better expressed by the bare infinitive or by an established action noun: Dedicar-se als fills exigeix temps or La dedicació als fills exigeix temps, depending on meaning. Article + infinitive is licensed in particular lexical, possessive, generic, or stylistic constructions; it is not a universal nominalizer.

💡
Test how much verbal grammar remains. If the form takes a direct object and adverbs, it is likely an infinitival clause; if it takes ordinary noun plural and an attributive adjective, it is likely a lexical noun.

Adjectives used as nouns

An adjective can stand for a person or entity whose noun is recoverable: els joves “young people,” la responsable “the person in charge,” els acusats “the accused.” The determiner helps create the nominal phrase, but the adjective keeps its gender and number contrasts.

Els joves del poble han recuperat l'antic cinema.

The young people in the town have restored the old cinema.

Parla amb la responsable abans d'enviar cap factura.

Speak to the person in charge before sending any invoice.

This is not the same as saying that the adjective has permanently become a noun. Responsable remains an adjective in una persona responsable but has a nominal use in la responsable. Other forms are strongly lexicalized: un desconegut is “a stranger,” though desconegut can still be an adjective.

Catalan also uses an article with an ellipted noun in comparisons and selections: Vull la blava, no la verda “I want the blue one, not the green one”; Aquesta és la més barata. The missing noun is understood from context, and agreement tracks it.

De les dues carpetes, dona'm la blava; la verda és de la Marta.

Of the two folders, give me the blue one; the green one is Marta's.

For abstract “what is X,” Catalan does not have a standard neuter article lo equivalent to Spanish lo. Natural solutions include el que és important, allò que és important, or, with an understood noun or issue, el més important.

Adjectives used adverbially

A limited set of adjectives can modify a verb directly in a fixed masculine singular form: parlar clar, treballar dur, volar baix, anar dret. This is often called an adverbial or “flat” adjective. Because it modifies the event rather than a noun, it does not agree with the subject.

La directora parla clar fins i tot quan les notícies són dolentes.

The director speaks plainly even when the news is bad.

Les corredores han treballat dur per arribar a la final.

The runners have worked hard to reach the final.

Compare the adjective and adverbial readings:

Noun-modifying adjectiveVerb-modifying adjective
una explicació clara — a clear explanationexplicar-ho clar — explain it clearly
una feina dura — hard worktreballar dur — work hard
una línia recta — a straight lineanar dret a casa — go straight home

The pattern is lexical: not every adjective can be placed after a verb and interpreted as an adverb. The productive alternative is usually an adverb in -ment or a prepositional phrase. English permits many bare adjective/adverb pairs, and (informal) speech may extend familiar Catalan patterns, but formal writing should not accept an invented flat adverb solely because it is understandable.

💡
Agreement diagnoses the target of modification. In elles parlen clar, invariant clar modifies the speaking; in elles són clares, clares describes the women and agrees.

Participles across three categories

A past participle can remain inside a compound verb, become a result adjective, or be nominalized. With haver, the standard compound-tense participle is invariant: Hem tancat les finestres. As an adjective, it agrees with the noun: les finestres tancades. With an article, it can refer to people or things: els detinguts, la ferida.

Hem tancat totes les finestres abans de sortir.

We closed all the windows before leaving.

Les finestres tancades fan que la sala s'escalfi de pressa.

The closed windows make the room heat up quickly.

Els detinguts declararan demà al matí.

The detainees will give statements tomorrow morning.

The categories differ in more than terminology. Verbal tancat combines with the auxiliary and helps locate an event in time. Adjectival tancades attributes a result state and agrees. Nominal detinguts heads a noun phrase referring to people. Some participial nouns are fully lexicalized: una entrada can mean an entrance or ticket, meanings not predictable from one current event of “entering.”

This conversion can be sensitive to register and reference. Referring to people solely by a condition—els discapacitats, for example—may sound reductive in contexts that prefer person-first expressions. That is a pragmatic and editorial choice beyond morphological correctness.

Zero derivation and lexical blocking

The term zero derivation emphasizes that no audible suffix marks the category change: jove has adjectival and nominal uses; sopar has verbal and nominal uses. It does not mean that Catalan freely moves every word into every category. Each converted use must occupy Catalan syntactic positions naturally and may acquire a specialized meaning.

English converts nouns to verbs very freely: “to email,” “to host,” “to impact.” Catalan sometimes adopts or creates a verb, but often prefers an established verb or phrase: enviar un correu, fer d'amfitrió, afectar. Spanish usage is likewise not a safe template. A Catalan coinage can be transparent and still sound like a calque.

—Al text diu que la mesura «impactarà les famílies». —En aquest registre formal, escrivim «afectarà les famílies» i evitem el calc.

—The text says that the measure will ‘impact the families.’ —In this formal register, we'll write ‘will affect the families’ and avoid the calque.

Here the issue is not that speakers cannot understand impactar. It has attested uses, especially involving collision and strong effects, but (formal) editorial convention may prefer afectar for neutral consequence. Conversion and new verb formation always interact with register and lexical competition.

Common Mistakes

❌ El fumar dins l'edifici està prohibit.

Awkward Spanish-influenced nominalization in neutral Catalan; a bare infinitive is preferred for the activity.

✅ Fumar dins l'edifici està prohibit.

Smoking inside the building is prohibited.

❌ Lo important és avisar tothom avui.

Incorrect Spanish neuter article transfer — standard Catalan does not use lo this way.

✅ El que és important és avisar tothom avui.

What matters is notifying everyone today.

❌ Les portaveus han parlat clares durant la reunió.

Incorrect for an adverbial reading — clar modifies how they spoke and remains masculine singular.

✅ Les portaveus han parlat clar durant la reunió.

The spokeswomen spoke plainly during the meeting.

❌ Hem tancades totes les portes del magatzem.

Incorrect in the compound tense — with haver, the standard participle is invariant.

✅ Hem tancat totes les portes del magatzem.

We have closed all the warehouse doors.

❌ Vull la carpeta blau, no la verda.

Incorrect — the substantivized color adjective still agrees with the understood feminine noun carpeta.

✅ Vull la blava, no la verda.

I want the blue one, not the green one.

Correction exercise

Identify the category and correct the form where necessary: Els jove organitzen el concert; elles parlen clares; hem obertes les portes; les portes són obert; lo difícil és començar. The corrected versions are els joves (nominal adjective, plural), elles parlen clar (adverbial adjective, invariant), hem obert les portes (verbal participle, invariant), les portes són obertes (adjectival participle, agreement), and el que és difícil és començar or la part difícil és començar (no Spanish neuter lo).

Key Takeaways

  • A bare infinitival clause can occupy a noun-like position while retaining verbal complements; a lexical infinitive noun can take determiners, adjectives, and plural.
  • Article + infinitive is restricted and often stylistic; do not copy it automatically from Spanish.
  • Substantivized adjectives keep gender and number agreement: el jove, la jove, els joves.
  • Flat adverbial adjectives are lexically limited and invariant: parlar clar, treballar dur.
  • With haver, the participle is normally invariant; as an adjective it agrees, and as a noun it heads a noun phrase.
  • Zero morphology does not mean unlimited conversion. Syntactic behavior, lexical convention, and register determine whether a category shift is natural.
