Weak pronouns belong to the verb semantically but cannot normally stand on their own phonologically. With the periphrastic past, the safest and most widespread pattern is to place the whole pronoun cluster before the finite auxiliary: la vaig veure, ens ho van explicar, no se'n va adonar. Catalan also licenses attachment to the infinitive—vaig veure-la, van explicar-nos-ho, no va adonar-se'n—although its frequency and stylistic effect vary.
The essential point is that the periphrastic past behaves as one verbal unit. A pronoun may occupy an approved edge of that unit; it cannot be dropped into an arbitrary gap.
The default pattern: pronoun before the auxiliary
In contemporary Central Catalan, and as a reliable pan-Catalan teaching baseline, put the weak pronoun or cluster immediately before vaig, vas, va, vam, vau, or van.
| Meaning | Pronoun | Periphrastic-past example |
|---|---|---|
| him / it (masculine singular) | el | El vaig trobar. |
| her / it (feminine singular) | la | La vas veure. |
| them | els / les | Les van guardar. |
| it / that idea | ho | Ho vam entendre. |
| to him / her | li | Li vau escriure. |
| there / to it | hi | Hi va tornar. |
| of it / some | en | En vaig comprar. |
| reflexive / pronominal | em, et, es, ens, us | Es va llevar. |
La vaig veure a la sortida del metro, però ella no em va veure.
I saw her at the metro exit, but she didn't see me.
En vam comprar quatre perquè hi havia una oferta.
We bought four of them because there was a special offer.
Els ho vas explicar abans de la reunió?
Did you explain it to them before the meeting?
The auxiliary, not the pronoun, shows person and number: la vaig veure is first-person singular, whereas la van veure is third-person plural. The infinitive does not agree with either the subject or the object.
Because every short auxiliary here begins with a consonant sound, a single preverbal pronoun normally takes the form used before a consonant: em va, et va, es va, el va, en va. Do not apostrophize it merely because English treats the whole tense as a single unit: write la va convidar, not l'va convidar.
Pronoun clusters stay in their normal order
Two or more weak pronouns form a cluster before the auxiliary. Their internal order follows the ordinary Catalan rules; the periphrastic past does not rearrange them. Thus me'l, te'n, se'n, ens ho, and els la remain intact.
La bicicleta me la van robar davant de l'estació.
My bike was stolen outside the station.
No me'n vaig adonar fins que vaig arribar a casa.
I didn't realize it until I got home.
Ens hi vam quedar dues hores més perquè plovia.
We stayed there two more hours because it was raining.
The first example contains left dislocation: la bicicleta establishes the topic, and me la resumes it inside the clause while also marking the affected person. That is a real Catalan construction, not accidental duplication. By contrast, repeating one direct-object clitic on both sides of the same verb—la vaig comprar-la—is not standard.
For the complete ordering system, especially combinations that differ between Central Catalan and Valencian, use Two-Clitic Order and Li + Direct-Object Combinations.
The alternative: attach the pronoun to the infinitive
Because the construction contains an infinitive, standard Catalan also allows enclisis: the pronoun can attach to that infinitive. The attached spelling is obligatory—use hyphens and apostrophes according to the infinitive's ending and the pronoun combination.
| Before the auxiliary | Attached to the infinitive |
|---|---|
| em va escoltar | va escoltar-me |
| la vaig veure | vaig veure-la |
| ens ho va explicar | va explicar-nos-ho |
| me'l va portar | va portar-me'l |
| se'n va adonar | va adonar-se'n |
| n'hi va posar dues | va posar-n'hi dues |
La directora va escoltar-nos amb calma i després ens va proposar una solució.
The director listened to us calmly and then proposed a solution.
Both positions in the table are grammatical. Pre-auxiliary placement is more uniform across verbs, clusters, and regions, and it predominates in much ordinary contemporary usage. Infinitive attachment is productive but can sound more literary, deliberate, or locally colloquial depending on the speaker and combination. (formal) Edited prose accepts it; it is not an error. (regional: Balearic and some other varieties) Postinfinitival patterns can be more frequent than in everyday Central Catalan. Learners should recognize both and use the preverbal pattern as their stable default.
Negatives and questions
With preverbal pronouns, the neutral negative order is no + cluster + auxiliary + infinitive. In a content question, the question phrase comes first: question phrase + cluster + auxiliary + infinitive.
No li vaig respondre perquè conduïa.
I didn't answer them because I was driving.
Per què no els ho vau dir abans?
Why didn't you tell them earlier?
With postinfinitival placement, no still precedes the auxiliary: no vaig respondre-li. Never place a weak pronoun between the auxiliary and infinitive as a free word: va em respondre is impossible.
Here is a natural exchange using both a question and a cluster:
—Les fotos, te les van enviar? —Sí, me les van enviar ahir al vespre.
—Did they send you the photos? —Yes, they sent them to me yesterday evening.
When a lower infinitive has its own pronoun
Not every infinitive after a periphrastic past belongs directly to the tense. In em vaig decidir a ajudar-lo, em belongs to decidir-se, while lo is the object of ajudar. Moving both pronouns to the first verb would erase that structure.
Em vaig decidir a trucar-li després de parlar amb la Marta.
I decided to call them after talking to Marta.
The same principle explains vaig provar de trobar-hi lloc: hi belongs to trobar, not to provar. Pronoun “climbing” is available with some genuine verbal periphrases, but it is not a license to move every pronoun to the first conjugated verb. See Pronoun Climbing.
Contrast with the present perfect and the progressive
The preverbal position is familiar from compound tenses with haver: l'he vista or, without participle agreement, l'he vist. In the periphrastic past, the corresponding form is la vaig veure. The pronoun precedes the finite auxiliary in both constructions, but only the present perfect contains a participle; veure remains an infinitive and never agrees in la vaig veure.
English progressive wording does not determine Catalan pronoun placement or tense. “I was looking for it” may be el buscava as background, l'estava buscant when the unfolding activity is foregrounded, or el vaig estar buscant durant una hora when a bounded stretch of activity matters. The simple completed event “I looked for it” is el vaig buscar. Viewpoint comes first.
The same is true of mood. Em va dir que hi aniria asserts the act of telling; dubtava que hi anés presents the going as nonasserted. Do not choose an indicative periphrastic past merely because an English translation contains “went,” and do not choose a subjunctive only by spotting a memorized trigger.
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting a free pronoun between auxiliary and infinitive.
❌ La Marta va em trucar a les sis.
Incorrect — a weak pronoun cannot stand freely inside the periphrastic verb.
✅ La Marta em va trucar a les sis.
Marta called me at six.
2. Attaching the pronoun without Catalan punctuation.
❌ Van explicar nos la notícia massa tard.
Incorrect — postverbal weak pronouns must be attached.
✅ Van explicar-nos la notícia massa tard.
They told us the news too late.
3. Doubling one object on both edges of the verbal group.
❌ La vaig comprar-la ahir.
Incorrect — the same direct-object clitic has been expressed twice.
✅ La vaig comprar ahir.
I bought it yesterday.
4. Copying Spanish lo into preverbal Central Catalan.
❌ Lo vaig trobar sota el sofà.
Nonstandard in the Central Catalan baseline for ‘I found it’ — use the reinforced preverbal form el.
✅ El vaig trobar sota el sofà.
I found it under the sofa.
5. Adding a because anar normally selects it.
❌ Me'n vaig a adonar ahir.
Incorrect for a completed past realization — this confuses lexical anar a with the past auxiliary.
✅ Me'n vaig adonar ahir.
I realized it yesterday.
Key Takeaways
Use pronoun + va-form + infinitive as your dependable baseline. You may instead attach the pronoun to the infinitive—va veure'm, va portar-me'l—when the cluster genuinely belongs to that verb and the resulting spelling is correct. Keep clusters together, put no before them, and let the auxiliary continue to carry all person-number agreement.
