Conjugation of aconseguir

Aconseguir means “to obtain,” “to achieve,” or, before an infinitive, “to manage to.” It belongs to the same incoative family as seguir: Central Catalan has aconsegueixo, aconsegueixes, aconsegueix, aconseguim, aconseguiu, aconsegueixen. The -eix- extension appears only in the stem-stressed present cells.

The principal parts are aconsegueixo – aconseguia – aconseguí – aconseguiré – aconsegueixi – aconseguís – aconseguit. The spelling gu keeps a hard /g/ before e and i; its u is not an extra spoken syllable in these forms. English speakers who know Spanish should resist importing consigo or consiguiendo: Catalan preserves the written family aconsegu- and uses aconseguint.

💡
Two visual shapes are enough: present aconsegueix- where the incoative extension appears, and plain aconsegu- everywhere else. The spelling gu protects the hard consonant throughout.

Obtaining, achieving, and managing to act

With a noun, aconseguir is transitive: aconseguir una entrada, una feina, permís, un objectiu. Definite objects take el/la/els/les; quantified or indefinite noun phrases can be resumed by en: Necessitàvem quatre signatures i només n'hem aconseguit tres. Catalan does not insert a preposition before this direct object.

Necessitem cinc voluntaris més, però de moment només n'hem aconseguit dos.

We need five more volunteers, but so far we've only found two.

Aconseguir + infinitive means “manage to do,” with the same understood subject: va aconseguir entrar. The bare infinitive is the neutral contemporary choice; aconseguir de + infinitive is also standard, but aconseguir a + infinitive is not. This construction presents the action as a successful result after difficulty, not simply as an ability; poder is therefore not always equivalent.

Tot i la cua, la Laia va aconseguir pujar al primer tren.

Despite the queue, Laia managed to get on the first train.

With different subjects, aconseguir que + subjunctive means bringing about a result: Va aconseguir que li retornessin els diners. The subjunctive reflects an induced outcome rather than an independently asserted fact.

La mediadora va aconseguir que les dues parts reprenguessin la negociació.

The mediator managed to get both sides to resume negotiations.

Common collocations include aconseguir un objectiu, aconseguir feina, aconseguir permís, aconseguir una fita, and emphatic aconseguir-ho “succeed / pull it off.” Ordinary aconseguir is not pronominal: aconseguir-se is not a free substitute for the transitive verb.

💡
Use aconseguir + noun for the result obtained, aconseguir + infinitive for managing your own action, and aconseguir que + subjunctive for bringing about someone else's action.

(Regional: Valencian) forms such as aconseguisc, aconseguixes/aconsegueixes, aconseguix/aconsegueix, and subjunctive aconseguisca... are standard; aconseguira... is a standard imperfect subjunctive. (Regional: Balearic) incoative forms in -esc occur. The main tables use Central aconsegueixo/aconsegueixi.

Key Takeaways

The key family is aconsegueixo, aconseguim, aconseguint, aconseguiré, aconsegueixi, aconseguís, and aconseguit. Keep -eix- only in its present cells and preserve gu before e/i. Use a direct object for what is obtained, a bare infinitive for managing to act, and que + subjunctive for causing another subject's result.
