Choosing B or V in Writing

For most Central Catalan speakers, b and v represent the same phoneme, so sound alone cannot tell you whether to write haver or an invented form such as haber. Reliable spelling comes from three sources: a visible consonant environment, a related word, or lexical memory. Morphology is especially powerful because a family normally keeps its historical b or v even when pronunciation changes by position; the b and v pronunciation guide explains the regional sound contrast.

This page follows current IEC spelling, which is also shared in the relevant forms by AVL usage. Some Valencian and Balearic speakers preserve a /b/–/v/ pronunciation contrast (regional: parts of Valencian and Balearic), but everyone uses the same lexical spellings.

The most useful positional patterns

Two high-frequency tendencies solve many cases:

  • write b after m: també, embolicar, ambient;
  • write v after n: canvi, enviar, inventar.

These are spelling patterns, not absolute laws. Compounds, prefixes, and learned words can preserve a v after m, as in tramvia and circumval·lació.

EnvironmentUsual choiceExamplesNotable caution
after mbtambé, embolicar, ambienttramvia, circumval·lació
after nvcanvi, enviar, inventlearn lexical exceptions
before l or roften bblau, blat, braç, breunot a rule for unrelated learned sequences

També hem enviat el canvi per correu.

We've also sent the change by mail.

També has mb, while enviat and canvi have nv. In Central pronunciation these letters may not offer a /b/–/v/ contrast, but the surrounding nasal gives a strong written cue.

El tramvia passa prop del centre de convencions.

The tram passes near the convention center.

Tramvia is an important exception to the simple “after m, write b” shortcut. Its structure and lexical history preserve mv. Honest spelling instruction must leave room for such exceptions.

💡
Use positional patterns to generate a likely answer, then check morphology. A rule such as “after m, write b” is useful only if you remember that compounds and learned words can preserve another spelling.

Word families preserve b or v

When the sound is ambiguous, find a relative whose spelling is familiar. Inflection and derivation normally retain the consonant.

BaseFamily membersStable letter
provaprovar, comprovació, probablev in prova/provar; b belongs to a different learned formation in probable
governgovernar, governant, governamentalv
canvicanviar, canviable, intercanviv
treballtreballar, treballadorb
sabersabem, sabia, saviesamostly b, with lexical alternation in saviesa

The table also shows why “same meaning” is not always enough. Prova/provar keep v, but learned probable has b; saber has b, while historically related saviesa has v. Some families contain inherited alternations that must be learned rather than regularized.

El govern vol aprovar una reforma governamental.

The government wants to approve a government reform.

Govern, governar, and governamental preserve v. The verb aprovar belongs with prova and also has v; Spanish aprobar is not a Catalan spelling model.

La treballadora sabia que el canvi seria difícil.

The worker knew that the change would be difficult.

Treballadora points back to treball with b; sabia to saber with b; canvi to its v family. The accentless sabia is correct because stress and hiatus follow their own rules.

La saviesa no consisteix només a saber moltes coses.

Wisdom does not consist only in knowing many things.

This genuine alternation—saviesa but saber—has no productive shortcut. It must be memorized. Pretending every family is graphically uniform would create new errors.

Alternations with p and u can reveal the consonant

Some relatives reveal b through an alternation with p, or v through an alternation with vowel-like u. These are lexical patterns, not transformations you may apply to any word.

AlternationExamplesSpelling clue
p ~ bllop / lloba; sap / saberthe voiced family member uses b
u ~ vblau / blava; neu / nevar; viu / viurethe consonantal family member uses v

La lloba jove seguia un llop vell.

The young she-wolf was following an old wolf.

Llop/lloba display final devoicing and a p/b family alternation. The feminine form makes the b visible between vowels.

El cel era blau, però la llum blavosa ja s'apagava.

The sky was blue, but the bluish light was already fading.

Blau ends in the glide written u; blavosa reveals consonantal v in the same lexical family.

💡
When a word ends in a sound that hides the spelling, move sideways in the family: llop → lloba, blau → blava, neu → nevar. A relative can expose the consonant that pronunciation alone conceals.

The imperfect ending -ava

Regular first-conjugation imperfect forms use -ava, -aves, -ava, -àvem, -àveu, -aven. This is a major Spanish-transfer trap because Spanish uses -aba.

Quan vivíem al poble, treballava a la biblioteca.

When we lived in the village, I worked at the library.

Treballava is built from treball- plus -ava. Its v belongs to the Catalan imperfect ending, even though the stem contains b.

Vosaltres cantàveu mentre nosaltres preparàvem el sopar.

You were singing while we were preparing dinner.

The accents in cantàveu and preparàvem mark stress and must not disappear while the learner concentrates on v. Spelling is layered: choosing the right consonant does not excuse losing à.

Frequent lexical choices and Spanish interference

Many common words simply require lexical memory. The following contrasts deserve early attention:

Correct CatalanTempting interferenceFamily or cue
haver, haviaSpanish haber/habíahaver family uses v
provar, provaSpanish probar/pruebastable Catalan v
governsound alonegovernar, governamental
bigaSpanish vigalexical Catalan b
mòbilsound alonemobilitat, immobilitzar

Havia de provar si la biga era prou resistent.

I had to test whether the beam was strong enough.

Havia and provar use v; biga uses b. Central pronunciation cannot reliably decide any of these choices.

Editing exercise

Correct the b/v choices while preserving the accent and apostrophe:

❌ L'empresa aproba el canbi que proposaba el gobern.

Editing exercise — several b/v choices conflict with Catalan spelling and word families.

✅ L'empresa aprova el canvi que proposava el govern.

The company approves the change proposed by the government.

The corrected families are prova/aprova, canvi/canviar, imperfect -ava, and govern/governar. The apostrophe in l'empresa remains attached.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying Spanish -aba into the imperfect.

❌ Abans treballaba a Girona.

Incorrect — Catalan first-conjugation imperfect uses -ava.

✅ Abans treballava a Girona.

I used to work in Girona.

2. Writing b after n by sound alone.

❌ Han embiat el cambi avui.

Incorrect — enviar and canvi use nv.

✅ Han enviat el canvi avui.

They sent the change today.

3. Treating the after-m pattern as exceptionless.

❌ Agafarem el trambia.

Incorrect — tramvia preserves v after m.

✅ Agafarem el tramvia.

We'll take the tram.

4. Importing a Spanish cognate spelling.

❌ Hem d'aprobar el projecte.

Incorrect — Catalan provar and aprovar use v.

✅ Hem d'aprovar el projecte.

We have to approve the project.

5. Trusting one family rule beyond its real limits.

❌ La sabiesa consisteix a saver-ho tot.

Incorrect — the family has a lexical alternation: saviesa but saber.

✅ La saviesa no és el mateix que saber-ho tot.

Wisdom isn't the same as knowing everything.

Key Takeaways

Use mb and nv as strong tendencies, remember exceptions such as tramvia, and let relatives expose hidden consonants: llop/lloba, blau/blava, govern/governamental. Write imperfect -ava, never Spanish -aba. Where neither environment nor family decides, lexical memory and dictionary verification are unavoidable.
