Weak Pronouns in Edited Prose

Correct pronouns can still make a paragraph hard to read. Li, el, la, els, ho, en, and hi carry compact grammatical information, but most do not name their referent, and a long sequence may support several plausible interpretations. Edited prose therefore balances grammatical economy against the reader's need to recover each antecedent immediately.

English encourages two opposite errors: deleting en and hi because English has no equivalent, and repeating nouns because English pronouns do not encode the same prepositions. Good Catalan does neither mechanically. It retains every required relation but restates a noun phrase when reference—not grammar—has become unclear.

First mentions name; later mentions track

Introduce a new participant or topic with a full phrase. Use a weak pronoun once the discourse has made that referent accessible:

La comissió revisarà la proposta divendres. Si l'aprova, en publicarà el text definitiu dilluns.

The committee will review the proposal on Friday. If it approves it, it will publish the final text on Monday.

L' refers to the already named proposal. En then encodes de la proposta in el text definitiu de la proposta. Neither pronoun is a word-for-word copy of English it.

When two candidates match the same pronoun, repeat a noun or use a more specific description:

La directora va presentar la coordinadora a la presidenta. Després, la directora va explicar el calendari.

The director introduced the coordinator to the president. Afterwards, the director explained the timetable.

Writing Després, ella va explicar... would leave three possible feminine singular antecedents. Repetition is not bad style when it prevents the reader from assigning an action to the wrong person.

💡
A pronoun saves words only if its antecedent costs the reader no effort. When two recent phrases match its person, number, and gender, repeat the clearest noun phrase.

Preserve the governing relation

Before editing a pronoun, reconstruct the full phrase. This prevents elegant-looking but ungrammatical substitutions:

L'informe tracta de l'impacte acústic. → L'informe en tracta amb detall.

The report deals with the noise impact. → The report deals with it in detail.

The verb is tractar de, so en preserves de. With confiar en or contribuir a, use hi: Hi confiem; hi contribuirem. The choice comes from Catalan government, not English word order.

El consell defensa aquesta interpretació. No hi estem d'acord i presentarem una objecció formal contra aquesta lectura.

The council supports this interpretation. We do not agree with it and will raise a formal objection to that reading.

If a pronoun would be obscure after several sentences, restore the full prepositional phrase rather than deleting the relation:

El dictamen també analitza el reglament anterior. En la conclusió, els autors tornen a aquesta qüestió.

The opinion also analyzes the previous regulations. In the conclusion, the authors return to this issue.

Hi tornen would be grammatical in immediate context, but tornen a aquesta qüestió can be clearer after an intervening discussion. Editing is not a contest to maximize clitics.

Doubling must reflect information structure

A detached topic needs a pronoun inside the clause:

D'aquest risc, ja n'havíem advertit la direcció al gener.

We had already warned management about this risk in January.

The initial de-phrase is a left-dislocated topic, and n' resumes it. By contrast, a neutral full object normally appears only once: Vam advertir la direcció d'aquest risc. Avoid La vam advertir la direcció..., where la and la direcció compete for one direct-object role.

Right dislocation also requires a pause and usually a comma in writing:

Ja l'hem enviada, la versió corregida.

We have already sent it, the corrected version.

Without the comma, Ja l'hem enviada la versió corregida looks like needless doubling. In formal prose, use right dislocation sparingly; neutral Ja hem enviat la versió corregida is often more direct. See Clitic Doubling.

Relative clauses are another danger. (informal) resumptive forms such as la proposta que la vam aprovar ahir occur in speech, but edited prose normally lets que fill the object role by itself: la proposta que vam aprovar ahir. If the relative needs a preposition, write it: el projecte de què parlàvem, not el projecte que en parlàvem.

Control cluster density

A two-pronoun cluster is routine when both antecedents are close:

La secretària necessita el permís. Envia-l'hi abans de les dotze.

The secretary needs the permit. Send it to her before twelve. (Central)

The Central cluster l'hi is recoverable because there is one masculine singular item and one recipient. (regional: Valencian) the same roles give Envia-li-la if the item is feminine (l'autorització → la) or Envia-li'l with masculine el permís. An editor must preserve the chosen regional system and the antecedent's gender.

Three-clitic clusters can be grammatical yet too dense for expository prose. Consider Els n'hi reservarem dos: context must establish who els refers to, what en counts, and which place hi denotes. If any link is remote, unpack the clause:

Reservarem dos exemplars als investigadors visitants en aquella biblioteca.

We will reserve two copies for the visiting researchers at that library.

The expanded version is longer but cannot be misparsed. A legal or technical text values one secure reading more than morphological compactness.

💡
Keep a cluster when all its antecedents occur in the same sentence or exchange and each has a distinct function. Expand it when two pronouns could share an antecedent, when the antecedents are several lines away, or when regional syncretism hides the roles.

Keep clusters intact when position changes

In a verbal periphrasis, a cluster that belongs to the infinitive may often stand before the finite verb or attach to the infinitive. Move the whole cluster:

La còpia, me la podeu enviar avui? / La còpia, podeu enviar-me-la avui?

As for the copy, can you send it to me today?

Do not split it as Me podeu enviar-la. With negation, a finite cluster remains after no: No me la podeu enviar avui. With an affirmative imperative it follows the verb: Envieu-me-la avui. With a negative imperative it precedes: No me l'envieu avui.

Envieu-me'n dues, però no me les envieu grapades.

Send me two copies, but do not send them to me stapled.

The first clause uses partitive en because dues leaves the count noun implicit; the second uses definite les because those two copies are now identified. This shift from indefinite quantity to definite discourse referent is meaningful, not stylistic variation.

Avoid Spanish-influenced substitutions

Spanish and Catalan package several complements differently. Catalan adonar-se de requires en: Me n'he adonat, not *M'he adonat. Opinar sobre/de takes hi/en when the topic is pronominalized, not direct-object ho in the sense “give an opinion about it.” Anar a un lloc requires hi when that destination is omitted.

No ens havíem adonat de l'error, però ara ja ens n'hem adonat.

We had not noticed the error, but now we have.

Sobre la nova norma, prefereixo no opinar-hi fins que l'hagi llegida sencera.

I prefer not to comment on the new rule until I have read it in full.

Catalan also does not add Spanish-style personal a automatically before every human direct object. Write Hem entrevistat la candidata → L'hem entrevistada, not Hem entrevistat a la candidata → Li hem entrevistat. The latter error changes a direct object into a dative.

Regional consistency in edited prose

Formal Catalan is pluricentric. A Valencian text may use li'l, li la, li'ls, and li les where a Central text uses l'hi, la hi, els hi, and les hi. A Balearic literary dialogue may preserve full me, te, se, or vos. Those choices are not inherently less edited.

What weakens a text is unmotivated switching: li'l in one paragraph, l'hi for the same functions in the next, then informal mos in an otherwise maximally formal report. Establish a house variety, keep the clusters consistent, and label a change only when a quoted speaker's regional voice matters. Valencian and Balearic Weak-Pronoun Forms maps the main alternatives.

Dialogue: clear antecedents

—La Júlia ja té l'esborrany del contracte? —Sí, l'hi vaig enviar ahir. Encara no n'ha comentat les clàusules noves, però avui en parlarà amb l'advocada.

—Does Júlia already have the draft contract? —Yes, I sent it to her yesterday. She has not commented on its new clauses yet, but today she will discuss them with the lawyer. (Central)

L' has one masculine antecedent, l'esborrany; hi has one recipient, la Júlia. Both instances of en refer back to the contract or its clauses through a de-relation. The sequence works because every antecedent is close and semantically distinct.

Common Mistakes

1. Keeping an ambiguous personal pronoun to avoid repetition.

❌ La metgessa va parlar amb la pacient i ella va anul·lar la visita.

Unclear—ella could refer to either woman.

✅ La metgessa va parlar amb la pacient, que va anul·lar la visita.

The doctor spoke with the patient, who cancelled the appointment.

2. Omitting en after an English-style translation.

❌ No m'he adonat fins avui.

Incomplete when the intended meaning is ‘I didn't realize it’—adonar-se'n retains en.

✅ No me n'he adonat fins avui.

I didn't realize it until today.

3. Doubling a neutral object needlessly.

❌ L'equip la publicarà la memòria al juny.

Incorrect in edited neutral prose—la and la memòria fill the same direct-object role.

✅ L'equip publicarà la memòria al juny.

The team will publish the report in June.

4. Choosing a clitic by Spanish case marking.

❌ A la candidata li vam entrevistar dilluns.

Incorrect—the interviewee is a direct object, not an indirect object.

✅ La candidata, la vam entrevistar dilluns.

As for the candidate, we interviewed her on Monday.

5. Splitting a cluster between two hosts.

❌ Me pots enviar-la avui?

Incorrect—the two clitics depending on enviar move together.

✅ Me la pots enviar avui? / Pots enviar-me-la avui?

Can you send it to me today?

Key Takeaways

Edited prose names new referents, uses weak pronouns to track accessible ones, and repeats a noun whenever a pronoun would be genuinely ambiguous. Preserve the preposition encoded by en or hi, distinguish required topic resumption from neutral duplication, move clusters as units, unpack opaque three-pronoun sequences, and keep Valencian, Balearic, or Central cluster conventions internally consistent.
