Sobre, Damunt, and A Sobre

Catalan has several standard ways to locate one thing higher than another. Sobre is a compact preposition meaning “on/over” and can also introduce a topic. Damunt (de) is explicitly spatial and often makes the upper relation more vivid. A sobre works naturally without an expressed complement (“on top, on it”), while a sobre de introduces the reference object.

All three spatial families can describe contact or simple higher position; the scene and the verb settle that distinction. Their syntax and nonspatial uses, however, are not identical.

Do not use Spanish encima de as a one-form template. Catalan distributes the same broad spatial territory among sobre (de), damunt (de), and intransitive a sobre, with different syntactic habits.

These forms belong to the wider inventory of prepositions of place, where they contrast with lower-position expressions such as sota and davall.

Contact and higher position

Sobre states that the figure is supported by, located on, or positioned above the reference object. It does not by itself require contact. The noun phrase most often follows directly: sobre la taula. Linking de is also standard (sobre del banc), but it is much less usual here than after damunt, so the direct pattern is the dependable neutral baseline.

He deixat la factura sobre la taula del menjador, al costat del fruiter.

I left the invoice on the dining table, beside the fruit bowl.

Un llum de vidre penja sobre la taula sense tocar-la.

A glass lamp hangs over the table without touching it.

The first sentence has contact; the second explicitly rules it out. English chooses on versus over, but Catalan sobre can cover both when the geometry is clear.

Damunt foregrounds the upper side or position and may be followed directly by a noun phrase or by de: damunt la taula, damunt de la taula. Both patterns are standard. With a masculine article after de, use del/dels.

An initial a is also possible before damunt: deixa el llibre (a) damunt la taula. The forms al damunt and al damunt de are likewise standard, especially when the upper location is treated as a self-contained adverbial expression.

El gat dorm damunt del jersei que acabes de plegar.

The cat is sleeping on top of the jumper you have just folded.

Damunt la porta hi ha una placa amb l’any de construcció.

Above the door there is a plaque with the year of construction.

This minimal pair shows that contact is contextual, not encoded by choosing one word:

La manta és damunt del sofà.

The blanket is on the sofa. (normally in contact)

El prestatge és damunt del sofà.

The shelf is above the sofa. (normally no contact)

💡
Do not memorize “sobre = touching” and “damunt = not touching,” or the reverse. Both express an upper relation. Choose from syntax, regional habit, and emphasis; let the nouns and verb reveal whether there is contact.

A sobre as an adverb and a sobre de as a locution

Use a sobre when the supporting or lower object is understood from context. Al damunt works similarly. To express the reference object, use a sobre de or al damunt de.

No posis els gots al rentaplats: deixa’ls a sobre i després els eixugaré.

Don't put the glasses in the dishwasher: leave them on top and I'll dry them later.

Les maletes són a sobre de l’armari de l’habitació del fons.

The suitcases are on top of the wardrobe in the back bedroom.

Portar a sobre means to have something on one’s person, not literally balanced on top of the body.

Portes el carnet de conduir a sobre o l’has deixat al cotxe?

Do you have your driving licence on you, or did you leave it in the car?

With a pronoun, a sobre is also common in expressions of pressure or unwanted proximity: tenir algú a sobre, notar una responsabilitat a sobre, caure-li a sobre. These uses preserve the metaphor of a weight from above.

Topic meaning belongs to sobre

Only sobre among these forms normally introduces subject matter: un article sobre energia, parlar sobre el pressupost, una pregunta sobre el termini. Catalan also uses de, often more idiomatically with parlar: parlar de política. Do not replace topic sobre with spatial damunt or a sobre de.

Dijous hi haurà una xerrada sobre intel·ligència artificial adreçada a les famílies.

On Thursday there will be a talk about artificial intelligence aimed at families.

Hem parlat de les obres, però encara no hem decidit res sobre el pressupost.

We've discussed the building work, but we still haven't decided anything about the budget.

Topic sobre is neutral and particularly useful in titles, reports, education, and public communication (formal/academic when the surrounding text is formal). In relaxed conversation, de is often the simpler choice after parlar.

Standard Catalan does not strand this preposition. Write la qüestió sobre la qual debatrem (formal) or recast it as la qüestió de què parlarem; do not imitate “the issue we will talk about” by placing sobre at the end.

Regional preferences and register

Sobre, damunt, al damunt, a sobre are all part of contemporary standard Catalan. Their frequency varies geographically and by speaker. Damunt is especially vigorous in Balearic and Valencian speech, while a sobre is highly frequent in much Central conversation; none of this makes either form exclusive to one territory.

Spatial sobre is neutral across registers. Additive a sobre or damunt, meaning “and what is more,” is chiefly (informal) and often conveys annoyance or surprise. In formal prose, choose a més, a més a més, encara més or ultra això according to tone.

L’autobús va arribar tard i, a sobre, el conductor no sabia on era la parada nova.

The bus arrived late and, on top of that, the driver didn't know where the new stop was. (informal)

The commas matter: here a sobre comments on the whole second proposition. In La carpeta és a sobre, there are no parenthetical commas because the phrase is a locative complement.

Idioms and scope

Per sobre / per damunt can describe movement across an upper area or a figurative ranking: passar per sobre del mur; posar la seguretat per damunt de la rapidesa. Mirar per sobre can mean to skim. These are established extensions, not interchangeable translations of every English expression with over.

Per damunt de tot, cal comprovar que tothom hagi sortit de l’edifici.

Above all, we must check that everyone has left the building.

Negation can deny placement or contrast the reference object. Make the intended scope explicit in careful writing:

No deixis la tassa sobre els expedients, sinó damunt de la safata buida.

Don't leave the cup on the case files; put it on the empty tray instead.

A fronted locative may establish a scene and be resumed by hi:

Damunt del moble que vam restaurar l’estiu passat, hi ha una capsa de fotografies.

On top of the piece of furniture we restored last summer, there is a box of photographs.

A natural dialogue

—On has deixat les entrades del concert?

—Where did you leave the concert tickets?

—Són a sobre de la calaixera, sota el llibre sobre arquitectura.

—They're on top of the chest of drawers, under the book about architecture.

—Aquí no hi són. —Mira damunt del prestatge de l’entrada.

—They aren't here. —Look on top of the shelf in the hall.

The same exchange contrasts adverbial-locutional a sobre de, topical sobre, and spatial damunt del.

Short correction task

Correct the choice or structure:

  1. He llegit un reportatge damunt la sequera.
  2. Deixa les claus sobre.
  3. La proposta que discutirem sobre és molt cara.
  4. El llibre és a sobre la taula.

Answers: un reportatge sobre la sequera; deixa les claus a sobre (or al damunt); la proposta sobre la qual discutirem or, more naturally, la proposta de què parlarem; a sobre de la taula.

Common Mistakes

❌ Han organitzat un debat damunt de la mobilitat urbana.

Damunt de is spatial; topic meaning requires sobre or de.

✅ Han organitzat un debat sobre la mobilitat urbana.

They have organized a debate about urban mobility.

❌ He posat el paquet sobre.

Without an explicit reference object, sobre normally needs a; bare damunt is also possible.

✅ He posat el paquet a sobre.

I've put the parcel on top.

❌ Les ulleres són a sobre el diari.

The locution a sobre requires de before an expressed reference object.

✅ Les ulleres són a sobre del diari.

The glasses are on top of the newspaper.

❌ Quin tema parlàveu sobre?

Incorrect English-style preposition stranding; parlar also normally selects de in this question.

✅ De quin tema parlàveu?

What topic were you talking about?

Key Takeaways

  • Sobre and damunt (de) can both express contact or higher position; context determines whether the objects touch.
  • Use a sobre without an expressed reference object and a sobre de when that object is named.
  • Topic meaning belongs to sobre or often de, never spatial damunt de.
  • A sobre meaning “moreover” is informal; keep locative and topical prepositions before questions and relatives instead of stranding them.
