Entre, Dins, and Dintre

Entre places something in relation to two or more reference points: entre la porta i la finestra, entre els arbres, entre nosaltres. Dins and dintre place it in an interior whose boundary matters: dins del calaix, dintre de la zona restringida. English in, inside, between, and among overlap differently, so the useful question is whether Catalan is presenting surrounding reference points or a container.

Dins and dintre are both standard. Dins is the shorter and most broadly useful form; dintre is common in many speakers' usage and can sound slightly more explicit about an interior, but the two normally do not encode different degrees of depth. Regional frequency varies more than meaning does.

For the larger system of spatial landmarks, see prepositions and locutions of place; this page concentrates on the boundary contrast between “among” and “inside.”

Entre: between and among

Unlike English, Catalan uses the same preposition for a relation involving two entities and one involving a larger set. There is no grammatical between/among split. The complement can be coordinated, plural, or collective.

El caixer automàtic és entre la fleca i la farmàcia.

The cash machine is between the bakery and the pharmacy.

Entre els papers vells he trobat una fotografia dels avis.

Among the old papers I found a photograph of my grandparents.

La proposta ha generat força dubtes entre el professorat.

The proposal has raised quite a few doubts among the teaching staff.

With two coordinated people, standard Catalan says entre tu i jo. The pronouns are coordinated as the participants in a reciprocal relation; copying English between you and me as entre tu i mi is a common transfer error.

Entre tu i jo, crec que aquest pressupost és massa optimista.

Between you and me, I think this budget is too optimistic.

Entre also distributes an action across participants: repartir entre quatre persones, decidir entre tots, parlar entre nosaltres. It can express reciprocity rather than physical position.

Ens repartirem les despeses entre els quatre i després farem números.

We'll divide the expenses among the four of us and then work out the figures.

The phrase after entre normally stays adjacent to it. Catalan does not strand the preposition at the end of an English-style question: Entre quines opcions dubtes?, not Quines opcions dubtes entre?

Dins de: a bounded interior

Dins de presents the complement as a container or boundary. The boundary may be concrete—a room, bag, neighborhood—or abstract—a group, regulation, budget, or field of study. The ordinary contractions apply after de: dins del, dins dels, dins de la, dins de les, dins de l'.

Hi ha una llibreta blava dins del calaix de dalt.

There's a blue notebook inside the top drawer.

Dins de l'edifici no hi ha cobertura, però al pati sí.

There's no signal inside the building, but there is in the courtyard.

La despesa encara entra dins del pressupost aprovat.

The expense still falls within the approved budget.

In the last example the budget is conceptualized as a limit. English often chooses within for this abstract boundedness, but Catalan uses the same interior construction as it does for a drawer.

Before an ordinary common-noun phrase, de may be omitted in standard Catalan: dins la capsa and dintre l'armari coexist with dins de la capsa and dintre de l'armari. The link is normally retained before pronouns, proper names, and casa (dins de mi, dins de Girona, dins de casa), as well as when a focusing element intervenes (dins mateix de la capsa). For learners, dins de + noun phrase is the clearest productive pattern and is natural throughout the language.

Dintre de and regional preference

Dintre de normally alternates with dins de without a change in truth conditions. Both occur in formal and informal Catalan. Individual speakers and territories differ in frequency, so it is misleading to label one “correct” and the other “colloquial.” In concise compounds and administrative prose, dins de is particularly frequent; dintre de remains fully standard.

Deixa el paquet dintre de l'armari perquè no es mulli.

Leave the parcel inside the cupboard so it doesn't get wet.

El cas s'haurà de resoldre dintre del marc legal vigent.

The case will have to be resolved within the current legal framework. (formal)

Do not invent a stable semantic contrast such as “dins means just in; dintre means deep inside.” Context or an added expression conveys depth: ben endins, al fons de, a l'interior de. The preposition pair itself does not reliably make that distinction.

Independent dins and dintre

When the container is obvious, dins or dintre can stand alone as a locative adverb. The speaker may be contrasting interior and exterior, or simply telling someone where a person is.

—Els nens encara són al jardí? —No, ja són dins preparant el berenar.

—Are the children still in the garden? —No, they're already inside preparing their snack.

La porta era oberta, però no vaig voler entrar dintre sense permís.

The door was open, but I didn't want to go inside without permission.

With an expressed complement, dins de / dintre de is the safest general pattern: dins de casa, dintre del magatzem. Direct dins / dintre + noun phrase is also standard in the environments described above, so dintre l'armari is not an error.

The locative pronoun hi can replace the entire interior phrase: Treballes dins del recinte? —Sí, hi treballo des del gener. Do not retain both a purely resumptive hi and the phrase in neutral order unless the construction independently calls for dislocation.

The decisive contrast: surrounding points versus containment

The same scene can be described in two ways depending on what the speaker foregrounds.

La moto és entre dos cotxes.

The motorbike is between two cars; the cars are the reference points.

La moto és dins del garatge.

The motorbike is inside the garage; the garage is the enclosing space.

Hem plantat espígol entre els arbres del pati.

We've planted lavender among the trees in the courtyard.

Hem plantat espígol dins de l'hivernacle.

We've planted lavender inside the greenhouse.

This is not merely a vocabulary choice. Entre organizes a set of landmarks; dins de gives one boundary scope over the located item. A person can be entre la gent “among the people” and simultaneously dins de l'estació “inside the station.”

Time: a bounded interval, not a duration in progress

Dins de can set a future limit: dins de dues hores. The highly transparent cross-regional form d'aquí a dues hores measures forward from now and is often preferable when exact timing matters. Neither phrase states how long the activity itself lasts.

D'aquí a mitja hora et truco i m'expliques com ha anat la visita.

I'll call you in half an hour and you can tell me how the appointment went.

Ho tindrem enllestit dins de tres dies, com a màxim.

We'll have it finished within three days, at the latest.

Contrast Treballarem durant tres dies, which describes three days occupied by the work. Ho acabarem dins de tres dies sets the outer deadline. The distinction is boundedness: dins de places completion inside a time boundary.

Scope and word order

Fronted phrases can set the scene or establish a contrast. A long fronted locative is normally separated by a comma, and hi may resume it when the construction is dislocated rather than simply reordered.

Dins de la carpeta que hi ha entre els dos arxivadors, hi trobaràs el contracte original.

Inside the folder between the two filing cabinets, you'll find the original contract.

The outer phrase begins with dins de; the embedded relative clause contains entre. Reversing the prepositions would change the physical structure, not simply the style.

Negation can target either inclusion or the whole event. No és dins del sobre denies the location. No tots els rebuts són dins del sobre allows some to be inside. Catalan, like English, relies on word order and quantifier scope here; the preposition itself does not carry polarity.

A natural dialogue

—On has deixat les entrades? —Dins del llibre que hi ha entre els dos diccionaris. —Dintre del llibre? —Sí, entre les pàgines quaranta i quaranta-cinc.

—Where did you leave the tickets? —Inside the book that's between the two dictionaries. —Inside the book? —Yes, between pages forty and forty-five.

The book is entre two external landmarks; the tickets are dins del book; the two pages again act as reference points for entre. The form dintre del in the follow-up question is a natural synonym, not a correction.

💡
Entre does not imply an enclosing container, and dins de does not count landmarks. A phrase can use both because the same object can have an interior and occupy a position among other objects.

Common Mistakes

❌ La parada és dins el banc i la biblioteca.

Incorrect for two external reference points—use entre.

✅ La parada és entre el banc i la biblioteca.

The bus stop is between the bank and the library.

❌ He deixat el carregador entre la motxilla.

Incorrect—a single bag is a container, not a set of reference points.

✅ He deixat el carregador dins de la motxilla.

I left the charger inside the backpack.

❌ Entre tu i mi, aquesta excusa no s'aguanta.

Incorrect in the standard coordinated expression—use jo, not mi.

✅ Entre tu i jo, aquesta excusa no s'aguanta.

Between you and me, that excuse doesn't hold up.

❌ El document és dins de el sobre petit.

Incorrect—de + el contracts to del.

✅ El document és dins del sobre petit.

The document is inside the small envelope.

❌ Quins edificis queda la plaça entre?

Incorrect—Catalan does not normally strand entre.

✅ Entre quins edificis queda la plaça?

Which buildings is the square between?

Short correction task

Choose entre, dins de, or independent dins and make any needed contraction: El gos dorm _ els dos sofàs; Les joguines són _ armari; Crida els nens: encara són _. The answers are entre els dos sofàs, dins de l'armari, and encara són dins. The first has two landmarks, the second an explicit container, and the third an understood interior.

Key Takeaways

  • Entre means both “between” and “among”; the number of reference points does not select a different preposition.
  • Dins de and dintre de present a physical or abstract boundary as an interior.
  • Dins and dintre can stand alone when that interior is understood.
  • Use the contractions del/dels after de, and keep the preposition before questions and relatives.
  • For future timing, dins de can set an outer limit, while d'aquí a explicitly measures forward from now.
