Catalan work and study talk depends on combinations that dictionaries often hide: treballar de metge, estudiar química, aprovar una assignatura, fer feina, anar per feina. Their verbs, articles, and prepositions are conventional. Translating English “work as,” “pass a test,” or “go to work” one word at a time produces phrases that may be understandable but do not mean what the learner intended.
This page uses contemporary Central Catalan as the main baseline and labels the particularly important Balearic and Valencian patterns. It concentrates on the grammar of common frames rather than listing jobs or school subjects.
The pattern grid
| Stored pattern | Variable slot | Meaning/function |
|---|---|---|
| fer feina | person, tense, degree | work; get work done |
| treballar de + profession | profession | work as |
| treballar a/en + workplace | specific place or organization | work at/in |
| estudiar + subject | subject or field | study a discipline |
| aprovar/suspendre + exam or subject | assessment | pass/fail |
| anar per feina | person and tense | get down to business; act purposefully |
The slots vary, but the packages impose limits. The verbs inflect freely—treballo/vaig treballar, estudio/estudiaré, he aprovat/aprovaré—while retaining the selected complement. The profession after de normally lacks an article; anar per feina contains bare feina and does not literally mean traveling to one's workplace.
Treballar and fer feina
Treballar is the neutral verb “to work.” It can describe employment, effort, a schedule, or a process: treballo vuit hores, aquesta màquina treballa bé. Fer feina highlights carrying out work or making progress. In Central Catalan it often answers “are you getting work done?” rather than merely “are you employed?”
Avui treballo des de casa perquè tinc una reunió en línia.
Today I'm working from home because I have an online meeting.
Aquest matí no he fet gaire feina: m'han interromput constantment.
I haven't got much work done this morning: I've been interrupted constantly.
(Regional: Balearic) fer feina is the broad, everyday equivalent of “work” and is especially characteristic: Faig feina en un hotel. (Regional: Valencian) fer faena, with standard Valencian faena, is common. These are legitimate regional systems, not mistakes to “correct” toward Central usage.
Faig feina en una botiga del centre.
I work in a shop downtown. (regional: Balearic)
Professions and workplaces
The compact profession frame is treballar de + profession, normally without an article: treballar de cambrera, d'enginyer, de traductora. The preposition elides before a vowel. Treballar com a + profession is also standard and foregrounds capacity or role, especially in more explicit or formal descriptions.
La Júlia treballa d'infermera en un centre de salut.
Júlia works as a nurse in a health center.
Durant l'estiu vaig treballar com a guia turístic.
During the summer I worked as a tour guide.
The absence of an article does not suppress agreement. Where a profession has distinct gender forms, the form matches the person: treballa de metge beside treballa de metgessa, or com a guia turístic beside com a guia turística. Invariable nouns such as artista keep the same noun form, while an accompanying adjective can still show gender.
A workplace is not a profession. With a specific physical institution, a is common: treballar a l'hospital, a l'oficina, a la universitat. With an organization or sector conceptualized as an environment, en is common: treballar en una empresa petita, en educació. Usage overlaps, so learn frequent noun-preposition combinations rather than pretending that English at/in gives a mechanical rule.
Treballo en una editorial, però dos dies a la setmana treballo a casa.
I work for a publishing house, but two days a week I work at home.
The profession remains bare with an ordinary modifier: treballa de metgessa rural. By contrast, parla de la metgessa rural contains an article because de now means “about,” not “as.” The article therefore helps distinguish two entirely different structures.
The same article contrast appears with ser and other identity predicates; see professions and identities for the wider system.
Studying a field and studying for an assessment
Estudiar + subject/field is directly transitive: estudiar català, física, dret. Institutional location takes its own phrase: estudiar a la universitat. To name the goal of current preparation, Catalan can use per a + noun in the general standard: estudiar per a l'examen. In much Central speech, per is also heard in goal contexts; formal writing may maintain the distinction according to the applicable standard and style.
Estudio biologia a la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
I study biology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Aquesta tarda he d'estudiar per a l'examen de dimarts.
This afternoon I have to study for Tuesday's exam.
Aprendre focuses on acquiring knowledge or ability; estudiar focuses on the activity of deliberate study. Estudio català may be true even on a frustrating day; aprenc català presents the learning process or result.
Estudio català des de fa sis mesos i cada dia n'aprenc una mica més.
I've been studying Catalan for six months, and every day I learn a little more of it.
Passing, failing, grades, and classwork
Aprovar and suspendre take the assessment or subject directly: aprovar l'examen, suspendre matemàtiques. In the perfect, their participles are aprovat and suspès. A teacher can also pass or fail a student: la professora l'ha aprovat.
Because an exam, subject, or student is a direct object here, ordinary direct-object clitics can resume it: Has aprovat l'examen? Sí, l'he aprovat. Likewise, La professora ha aprovat els dos alumnes? Sí, els ha aprovat. The surrounding question tells you whether the clitic refers to an assessment or to a person.
He aprovat totes les assignatures menys estadística.
I've passed all my subjects except statistics.
Va suspendre l'examen perquè va deixar tres preguntes en blanc.
She failed the exam because she left three questions blank.
To say what grade you obtained, the ordinary combination is treure una nota: he tret un vuit, treu bones notes. This light verb must be learned as part of the phrase. Spanish also uses sacar, but mechanically importing that verb into Catalan (sacar una nota) is not standard Catalan.
Has tret molt bona nota sense anar a classes particulars.
You got a very good grade without taking private lessons.
For class activity, common packages include fer un examen “sit/take an exam,” prendre apunts “take notes,” lliurar un treball “hand in a paper,” and fer una presentació. Notice the contrast: students fan an exam, then l'aproven o el suspenen.
Anar per feina: not “go to work”
Anar per feina literally resembles “go for work,” but its idiomatic function is “get down to business,” “be purposeful,” or “stop wasting time.” It often carries an efficient, mildly brisk tone (neutral/informal).
Tenim mitja hora per acabar l'informe; va, anem per feina.
We have half an hour to finish the report; come on, let's get down to business.
To mean physical movement toward employment, say anar a la feina with a + la: cada dia vaig a la feina amb bicicleta. Changing the supposedly small article creates a different meaning.
Vaig a la feina a les vuit, però quan arribo anem per feina de seguida.
I go to work at eight, but when I arrive we get down to business immediately.
A comprehensible but nonidiomatic alternative is comencem a efectuar el treball. It sounds bureaucratic (formal/administrative) in an ordinary team meeting. Anem per feina performs the same transition naturally. Conversely, som-hi! is a lively (informal) “let's go/get to it”; it suits colleagues or classmates but not the prose of a formal application.
The proverb Qui dia passa, any empeny evokes merely getting through each day. It can be humorous or resigned, but using it in a job interview to describe your work ethic would imply survival rather than initiative. Correct grammar does not guarantee an appropriate social message.
Three substitutable frames
- Treballo de/com a + profession + a/en + workplace. Example: Treballo de tècnica en una cooperativa.
- Estudio + field + a + institution. Example: Estudia arquitectura a la universitat.
- He aprovat/suspès + assessment + perquè... Example: He aprovat l'examen perquè havia estudiat molt.
Treballa de programador en una empresa de videojocs i estudia música al vespre.
He works as a programmer at a video-game company and studies music in the evening.
The profession and subject slots are open; de, the bare profession, and the direct objects of estudiar/aprovar/suspendre remain structurally stable.
Mini-dialogue: classmates after an exam
—Com t'ha anat l'examen? —Bé, crec que aprovaré, però no he sabut fer l'últim exercici. —Jo tampoc. Ara hem de lliurar el treball de sociologia. —Doncs anem per feina i l'acabem abans de dinar.
—How did the exam go? —Well, I think I'll pass, but I didn't know how to do the last exercise. —Neither did I. Now we have to hand in the sociology paper. —Then let's get down to business and finish it before lunch.
The exchange uses fer un exercici, aprovar, lliurar un treball, and idiomatic anar per feina. None is predictable from the English noun alone.
Common Mistakes
❌ Treballo com un metge en l'hospital.
This sounds as though you work like a doctor; the profession frame uses de or com a, normally without an article.
✅ Treballo de metge a l'hospital.
I work as a doctor at the hospital.
❌ He passat l'examen final.
A word-for-word use of English pass; in Catalan, successful assessment uses aprovar.
✅ He aprovat l'examen final.
I passed the final exam.
❌ Vaig per la feina: no vull arribar tard a l'oficina.
Wrong frame for physical destination; per feina means purposefully/getting down to business.
✅ Vaig a la feina: no vull arribar tard a l'oficina.
I'm going to work; I don't want to arrive late at the office.
❌ He sacat un nou a l'examen.
Spanish sacar has been imported into a Catalan light-verb expression.
✅ He tret un nou a l'examen.
I got a nine on the exam.
Key Takeaways
- Treballar is the safe general verb; fer feina foregrounds doing/getting work done and has broader regional use.
- Use treballar de or com a plus a normally articleless profession.
- Estudiar takes its subject directly; location and purpose add their own prepositional phrases.
- Pass/fail is aprovar/suspendre; obtain a grade is treure una nota.
- Anar a la feina means go to work, while anar per feina means get down to business.
- Register and regional variety are part of mastery: fer faena, som-hi!, and a formal written formula do not belong indiscriminately in every setting.
