Catalan metaphor is systematic. Arguments can avançar “move forward,” ideas can madurar “ripen,” a crisis can be a tempesta “storm,” and one issue can occupy the centre while another stays al marge. These are not isolated ornaments: each image creates a family of related ways to organize abstract experience.
Productive does not mean unrestricted, however. Speakers still store preferred verbs, articles, prepositions, clitics, and registers. English “swallow an excuse” corresponds well to empassar-se una excusa, but Catalan requires the pronominal verb. Spanish dar un paso cannot choose the light verb for Catalan: the Central Catalan baseline is fer un pas, while Valencian also uses pegar un pas. Learn the family and the construction together.
Compare these extendable families with the partly or wholly fixed structures on the idioms page, and see expressions with cap and cara for one body-metaphor network in depth.
The pattern grid
| Source image | Abstract domain | Productive frame | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|
| weather | public mood, difficulty, change | una tempesta de; vents de; l'horitzó s'ennuvola | neutral to journalistic/literary |
| food/digestion | ideas, news, deception | madurar/pair X; empassar-se X | neutral; some informal |
| body | organization, centrality, channels | el cap/cor/braç/peu/boca de X | neutral |
| movement | progress and obstruction | avançar, frenar, encallar-se, tirar endavant | neutral |
| space | importance and perspective | al centre/marge; en primer pla; punt de vista | neutral to formal |
Weather: public climates and approaching trouble
Weather gives changing, partly uncontrollable conditions a visible shape. A controversy can unleash a tempesta; prospects can ennuvolar-se; vents de canvi can be felt before institutions actually change. These phrases are common in (journalistic) and (literary) writing, though individual verbs also occur in conversation.
Les noves acusacions han desfermat una tempesta política dins del govern.
The new allegations have unleashed a political storm within the government. (journalistic)
Després de perdre el principal client, l'horitzó de l'empresa es va ennuvolar.
After losing its main client, the company's outlook darkened. (neutral metaphor)
A la universitat bufen vents de canvi, però encara no hi ha cap proposta concreta.
Winds of change are blowing at the university, but there is still no concrete proposal. (journalistic/literary)
The grammar constrains the image. Desfermar una tempesta is transitive: something unleashes it. L'horitzó s'ennuvola is pronominal/inchoative: the outlook becomes clouded. Bufen vents uses a plural verb because vents is the postverbal subject.
Not every emotional state needs weather. La reunió va ser tensa is a precise, transparent alternative to hi havia tempesta. Extended metaphors attract attention; in a factual report, the nonfigurative adjective may be better.
Frame 1: food processes for mental processing
Substitutable frame: [person/idea] + pair/madurar/empassar-se + [news, idea, claim].
Pair una notícia views understanding and accepting as digestion. Madurar una idea views thought as fruit developing over time. Empassar-se una mentida o una excusa presents belief as swallowing, often with a skeptical or contemptuous tone. The last verb is pronominal in this sense.
Encara no he paït la notícia que tanquen la llibreria del barri.
I still haven't processed the news that they're closing the neighborhood bookshop. (neutral)
Deixa'm madurar la proposta aquest cap de setmana i dilluns en parlem.
Let me think the proposal through this weekend and we'll discuss it on Monday. (neutral)
No m'empasso l'excusa que ningú no havia vist el missatge.
I don't buy the excuse that nobody had seen the message. (informal; m' is required by empassar-se)
The adjective verd/verda extends the ripeness scale to people and projects: “not mature or ready.” It agrees normally. Calling a new employee verd can sound dismissive; encara té poca experiència is socially softer.
La idea és interessant, però encara és massa verda per presentar-la als inversors.
The idea is interesting, but it is still too underdeveloped to present to investors. (neutral)
In (journalistic/informal) language, an agreement can be cuinat behind the scenes. The metaphor often suggests opaque preparation and is not a neutral synonym for negotiate.
Segons el diari, l'acord s'havia cuinat en reunions privades.
According to the newspaper, the deal had been cooked up in private meetings. (journalistic)
Frame 2: body parts map organizations and texts
Substitutable frame: [body-part noun] + de + [domain], or [body-part noun] + [stored modifier].
The head controls, the heart is central, the arm acts, the foot supports or closes, and the mouth opens into a channel. This family is productive, but individual combinations are conventional: cap de departament, cor del problema, braç dret, peu de pàgina, boca del metro, coll d'ampolla.
La coordinadora és el braç dret de la directora i coneix tots els procediments.
The coordinator is the director's right-hand person and knows all the procedures. (neutral; braç remains masculine regardless of the person's gender)
Al cor del problema hi ha una manca de confiança entre els dos equips.
At the heart of the problem is a lack of trust between the two teams. (neutral)
Trobareu la referència completa al peu de la pàgina següent.
You'll find the complete reference at the bottom of the next page. (neutral/formal)
A aquesta hora sempre hi ha cua a la boca del metro.
At this time there is always a line at the subway entrance. (neutral)
A coll d'ampolla is a narrow stage that limits the capacity of a whole process. The plural is colls d'ampolla: only coll pluralizes in the established compound-like expression.
La revisió manual s'ha convertit en el principal coll d'ampolla del procés.
Manual review has become the main bottleneck in the process. (neutral/formal)
Body-noun gender remains grammatical, not biological. A female deputy can be el braç dret because agreement follows masculine noun braç. A woman leading a department can be la cap del departament, with the article marking the person's gender while cap itself remains unchanged.
Frame 3: motion gives projects a path
Substitutable frame: [project/process] + avançar/encallar-se/tirar endavant/fer marxa enrere.
Once an activity is imagined as a traveler, progress is forward motion, difficulty is obstruction, and abandoning a decision is backward motion. Avançar can be intransitive (el projecte avança) or transitive (avançar una data “bring a date forward”), so argument structure changes the precise meaning.
La recerca avança més de pressa des que comparteixen les dades.
The research is progressing faster since they began sharing the data. (neutral)
Les negociacions es van encallar per una diferència de només dos articles.
The negotiations stalled over a difference of only two clauses. (neutral; encallar-se is pronominal in the inchoative reading)
Malgrat els dubtes inicials, tirarem endavant el projecte pilot.
Despite the initial doubts, we'll push ahead with the pilot project. (neutral)
L'ajuntament va fer marxa enrere després de les al·legacions dels veïns.
The city council reversed course after the residents' objections. (neutral/journalistic)
Central Catalan fer un pas endavant uses fer, not Spanish-influenced donar. Valencian also commonly uses pegar un pas (regional: Valencian). The noun can be literal or metaphorical, but the light-verb collocation remains Catalan.
Publicar els criteris seria un pas endavant en transparència.
Publishing the criteria would be a step forward in transparency. (neutral/formal)
Space: importance, exclusion, and perspective
Abstract discussion is organized like a visible field. Central issues stand al centre or en primer pla; secondary ones recede a un segon pla; excluded people or topics remain al marge. A proposal can be damunt la taula, available for consideration.
La sequera ha tornat a posar la gestió de l'aigua en primer pla.
The drought has brought water management back to the foreground. (neutral/journalistic)
No podem deixar les famílies petites al marge de la consulta.
We cannot leave small families out of the consultation. (neutral/formal)
Ara mateix hi ha tres opcions damunt la taula.
Right now there are three options on the table. (neutral)
Punt de vista makes perspective a location from which one sees. The possessor is introduced by de or expressed with a possessive: des del punt de vista jurídic, el meu punt de vista. In careful (formal/academic) prose, specify the dimension rather than repeating a vague des del punt de vista de.
Des del punt de vista acústic, la sala necessita més materials absorbents.
From an acoustic standpoint, the room needs more absorbent materials. (formal/academic)
Combining families without mixing them
Metaphors can form a coherent chain, but too many unrelated images create comic prose. El projecte va naufragar perquè el coll d'ampolla va encendre una tempesta mixes navigation, anatomy, fire, and weather without a clear purpose. Good editing normally chooses one dominant image or uses transparent verbs.
—Com va l'acord? —Està encallat, però demà posarem una proposta nova damunt la taula.
—How is the agreement going? —It's stalled, but tomorrow we'll put a new proposal on the table. (informal mini-dialogue; compatible movement and discussion-space images)
Metaphorical families are widespread across Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, and Northern Catalan, though frequency and preferred collocations vary. Alguerese also participates in productive metaphor, but direct transfer of every mainland expression should not be assumed. Region matters most when a metaphor depends on a local lexical choice; the forms taught here belong to broad contemporary standard usage.
Literal versus figurative readings
| Form | Literal reading | Figurative reading |
|---|---|---|
| pair el dinar / pair la notícia | digest lunch | mentally process news |
| fruita verda / proposta verda | unripe fruit | underdeveloped proposal |
| coll d'ampolla | narrow bottle neck | capacity-limiting stage |
| negociacions encallades | a vessel stuck | talks unable to progress |
| damunt la taula | physically on a table | available for discussion |
Common Mistakes
❌ No empasso la seva explicació sobre els pagaments.
Incorrect for the figurative meaning 'I don't buy it': empassar-se is pronominal.
✅ No m'empasso la seva explicació sobre els pagaments.
I don't buy his/her explanation about the payments.
❌ Les converses es van atascar a l'últim moment.
Spanish-influenced verb choice: contemporary standard Catalan uses encallar-se for negotiations that stall.
✅ Les converses es van encallar a l'últim moment.
The talks stalled at the last moment.
❌ La secretària és la braça dreta del president.
Incorrect literal gender adjustment: the metaphorical noun is masculine braç, regardless of the person's gender.
✅ La secretària és el braç dret del president.
The secretary is the president's right-hand person.
❌ Hem donat un pas important en la negociació.
Spanish-influenced light verb: the Central Catalan baseline is fer un pas; Valencian also uses pegar un pas.
✅ Hem fet un pas important en la negociació.
We've taken an important step in the negotiation.
❌ La proposta està verd i necessita una altra revisió.
Incorrect agreement: verd describes feminine proposta and must be feminine.
✅ La proposta està verda i necessita una altra revisió.
The proposal is still underdeveloped and needs another review.
Key Takeaways
- Productive metaphor families organize many expressions, but they do not license unrestricted word-for-word translation.
- Weather frames shifting public conditions; food frames mental processing and maturity.
- Body parts map roles and structure, while retaining their own grammatical gender.
- Movement verbs distinguish progress, obstruction, persistence, and reversal.
- Spatial phrases rank topics and perspectives: al centre, al marge, en primer pla, damunt la taula.
- Keep required clitics and light verbs: empassar-se una excusa, fer un pas.
- Match register and purpose. Transparent language is often more precise than a dramatic metaphor, especially in formal analysis.
