Catalan i means “and,” and o means “or.” They are coordinating conjunctions: they join elements of equal grammatical status without making one depend on the other. The coordinated elements can be single words, larger phrases, or whole clauses, but the listener must be able to recognize the same structural role on both sides.
Unlike Spanish y/e and o/u, Catalan i and o never change form because of the following sound. Write cafè i infusió and trucar o optar, even though adjacent vowels may link naturally in speech.
Choose the relation before the word
| Meaning | Form | Usual interpretation | Example pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| both elements are included | A i B | A plus B | cafè i llet |
| one or more alternatives are available | A o B | often inclusive unless context excludes one | truqueu o escriviu |
| exactly one alternative must be chosen | o A o B | explicitly exclusive | o avui o demà |
| two alternatives need extra clarity | A o bé B | “A or alternatively B” | en línia o bé per telèfon |
| both alternatives under negation | ni A ni B | neither A nor B | ni carn ni peix |
The table separates semantic relations, not registers. Plain i and o are neutral everywhere. O bé is also neutral, though especially useful in instructions and careful explanations. Negative ni belongs to the larger negative coordination system.
I joins equal elements
Use i to include both coordinated elements. It can join nouns, adjectives, verb phrases, prepositional phrases, or independent clauses.
Per esmorzar prendré pa amb tomàquet i un cafè amb llet.
For breakfast I'll have bread with tomato and a coffee with milk.
El pis és petit i lluminós, i té un balcó que dona al pati.
The apartment is small and bright, and it has a balcony overlooking the courtyard.
La Núria va tancar la botiga i va anar a recollir els nens a l'escola.
Núria closed the shop and went to pick up the children from school.
The last example has one subject shared by two verb phrases, so it need not repeat la Núria. In El pis és petit i lluminós, the two adjectives both describe el pis and agree with it. Coordination does not cancel ordinary agreement.
When the elements have the same grammatical function, parallel wording makes the sentence easy to parse:
La beca cobreix la matrícula, els llibres i el transport fins al campus.
The grant covers tuition, books, and transport to campus.
English speakers sometimes coordinate mismatched shapes without noticing. Catalan conversation can also contain repairs and ellipsis, but planned speech and writing should align the structures: two nouns, two infinitives, two prepositional phrases, or two clauses.
O offers alternatives
Plain o introduces alternatives. Context decides whether choosing one excludes the other.
Podeu enviar la documentació per correu o portar-la personalment a l'oficina.
You can send the documents by mail or bring them to the office in person.
In an instruction like this, either method is sufficient; using both is unnecessary but not logically impossible. In another context, o is naturally inclusive:
Si tens febre o et costa respirar, truca al centre de salut.
If you have a fever or find it hard to breathe, call the health center.
The advice applies if either symptom occurs or both occur. English or has the same ambiguity, so do not assume a one-to-one translation resolves the intended logic.
For an explicit exclusive choice, repeat the conjunction:
O presentes el formulari avui o hauràs de començar el tràmit de nou.
Either you submit the form today or you'll have to start the procedure again.
For a calm alternative rather than an ultimatum, o bé can help:
Ens podem trobar a la biblioteca o bé parlar-ne per videotrucada.
We can meet at the library or else discuss it by video call.
The conjunction itself does not select indicative or subjunctive. In Si tens febre o et costa respirar, present indicative follows the real condition. In Busquem una sala que tingui projector o que permeti enfosquir les finestres, subjunctive follows an indefinite desired antecedent in both coordinated relative clauses.
No Spanish-style sound changes
Catalan keeps i before words beginning in i- or hi- and keeps o before words beginning in o- or ho-.
A la reunió serviran cafè i infusions durant la pausa.
At the meeting they will serve coffee and herbal teas during the break.
Podeu trucar o optar per fer la reserva en línia.
You can call or choose to make the booking online.
Spanish uses e in café e infusión and u in llamar u optar to avoid repeated vowel sounds. Preserving that Spanish alternation in Catalan produces cafè e infusió or trucar u optar, which are not Catalan coordination. Pronunciation may smooth the vowel contact, but spelling and grammatical form remain i and o.
This rule is pan-regional. Central, Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, and Alguerese standards all write i and o. Some conversational varieties use additional coordinating particles or different discourse rhythms, but there is no standard regional e/u alternation corresponding to Spanish.
Agreement with coordinated subjects
Two singular noun phrases joined by i normally form a plural subject, so the verb is plural.
L'Arnau i la Berta arriben amb el tren de les sis.
Arnau and Berta are arriving on the six o'clock train.
Predicate adjectives describing the whole coordinated subject are also plural. Under the traditional mixed-gender agreement rule, a group containing masculine and feminine referents takes the masculine plural form.
L'Arnau i la Berta estan cansats, però encara han d'endreçar el material.
Arnau and Berta are tired, but they still have to put the equipment away.
Contemporary inclusive writing may avoid a gender-marked predicate by recasting naturally: Tant l'Arnau com la Berta necessiten descansar. Typographic forms such as cansats/des belong to style policy, not ordinary spoken morphology. At A1, learn the conventional agreement system and consult the agreement page for complex cases.
Subjects joined by o may be understood as singular alternatives or as a set. In a direct either/or choice with singular alternatives, singular agreement is natural:
La coordinadora o el secretari us confirmarà l'horari aquesta tarda.
The coordinator or the secretary will confirm the schedule for you this afternoon.
If o is inclusive or the speaker presents multiple possible participants, plural agreement can occur. That choice is genuinely contextual; there is no honest one-line shortcut for every coordinated subject. Rewriting often removes doubt: Us confirmaran l'horari des de coordinació o secretaria.
Punctuation: usually no comma before i or o
In a simple list, Catalan normally writes commas between items but not before the final i or o.
Per a la sortida cal portar aigua, una jaqueta i calçat còmode.
For the outing you need to bring water, a jacket, and comfortable shoes.
An English Oxford comma should not be copied automatically: aigua, una jaqueta, i calçat is not the normal Catalan list pattern. A comma may nevertheless appear before i when it separates long independent clauses, marks a parenthetical boundary, or gives the final clause a result, afterthought, or contrastive reading.
Vam esperar fins que van tancar totes les finestretes, i ningú no ens va saber dir on era l'expedient.
We waited until all the service windows had closed, and nobody could tell us where the file was.
The comma signals a break between two complete clauses and gives the second an afterthought-like force. It is not an Oxford comma. Before o, a comma can likewise prevent a long alternative from being swallowed into the previous phrase, but short alternatives take no comma.
Shared material, prepositions, and clitics
Coordinated phrases can share material that applies equally to both: amb la Joana i en Miquel means “with Joana and Miquel.” Repeat the preposition when the phrases are long, contrastive, or potentially misparsed.
Parlarem amb la cap de producció i amb els tècnics que van revisar la instal·lació.
We'll speak with the head of production and with the technicians who inspected the installation.
English can strand a preposition in questions and relatives (“the people we spoke with”). Catalan normally keeps the relation explicit: les persones amb qui vam parlar, not les persones que vam parlar amb. Coordination does not license stranding.
Weak pronouns stay in their normal position next to the verb. If two coordinated predicates share a clitic, it can often appear with each verb for clarity:
L'informe, el llegirem avui i el comentarem demà amb tot l'equip.
As for the report, we'll read it today and discuss it tomorrow with the whole team.
The dislocated L'informe is resumed by el in both predicates. Omitting the second pronoun may be possible in tightly linked structures, but repetition is the clear baseline for learners.
Natural dialogue
—Per sopar vols arròs o pasta? —Podem fer arròs i una amanida. —I hi posem pollastre o bé verdures? —Verdures; la Clara i en Samir no mengen carn. —D'acord. O comprem ara el que falta o demà trobarem les botigues tancades.
For dinner, do you want rice or pasta? —We can make rice and a salad. —And shall we put chicken or vegetables in it? —Vegetables; Clara and Samir don't eat meat. —All right. Either we buy what we're missing now or tomorrow we'll find the shops closed.
The dialogue moves from a plain alternative to inclusion, then to an explicit exclusive choice. Notice that i remains i before hi. The same invariability applies to o before a word beginning with an o-sound.
Common Mistakes
1. Importing Spanish e before an i-sound.
❌ A la pausa serviran cafè e infusions.
Incorrect—Catalan i never changes to e before an i-sound.
✅ A la pausa serviran cafè i infusions.
At the break they will serve coffee and herbal teas.
2. Importing Spanish u before an o-sound.
❌ Trigarà set u onze dies laborables.
Incorrect—Catalan o does not change to u before onze.
✅ Trigarà set o onze dies laborables.
It will take seven or eleven working days.
3. Copying an English Oxford comma into a simple list.
❌ Necessitem farina, ous, i mantega.
Nonstandard in a simple Catalan list—do not put a comma before the final i.
✅ Necessitem farina, ous i mantega.
We need flour, eggs, and butter.
4. Using singular agreement for an ordinary i-coordinated subject.
❌ La metgessa i l'infermer arribarà de seguida.
Incorrect—the two people joined by i form a plural subject.
✅ La metgessa i l'infermer arribaran de seguida.
The doctor and the nurse will arrive right away.
Short correction task
Correct La Irene e l'Ismael vindrà avui, u demà al matí in three steps. Catalan keeps i before Ismael, the coordinated subject requires plural vindran, and the alternative remains o: La Irene i l'Ismael vindran avui o demà al matí. To force an exclusive choice, write La Irene i l'Ismael vindran o avui o demà al matí.
Key Takeaways
Use i to include and o to offer alternatives. Keep them unchanged before every sound, coordinate parallel structures, and let ordinary agreement apply: two singular subjects joined by i normally take a plural verb. Plain o can be inclusive or exclusive; repeat it as o... o... when “exactly one” matters. In a simple list, omit the comma before the final conjunction, and never use coordination as a reason to strand a Catalan preposition.
