Both he parlat and vaig parlar describe a completed event. The contrast is how the speaker connects that event to the present discourse. In the Central Catalan baseline, he parlat normally places it inside a time frame that is still current or foregrounds a result relevant now; vaig parlar places it in a finished past frame and presents it as a past episode.
English is an unreliable guide. English can say “I spoke to her today,” where Central Catalan often has Hi he parlat avui. English cannot normally say “I've spoken to her yesterday,” and Catalan likewise uses ahir hi vaig parlar, but the two languages do not draw every boundary in the same place. Regional Catalan patterns differ too.
Spanish does not supply a universal shortcut either: Peninsular and American Spanish already differ among themselves, and Valencian Catalan has its own same-day pattern. Choose within the Catalan variety and discourse frame you are using.
For the broader tense system around this contrast, see present perfect versus periphrastic past.
The decision workflow
- Is there an explicit finished-time expression? With ahir, dimarts passat, el 2019, fa dos mesos, choose the periphrastic past.
- Is the period still open at speech time? In the Central baseline, avui, aquesta setmana, enguany, fins ara favor the present perfect.
- Is a present result central? Favor the present perfect even without a time expression: He perdut la targeta explains the current problem.
- Is the speaker recounting a self-contained past episode? Favor the periphrastic past.
- Which regional system is in use? Do not “correct” a consistent Valencian past choice into a Central one.
- Could both fit? Decide whether the event belongs to the current conversational frame or is being detached as a completed story.
| Frame or intention | Central default | Example |
|---|---|---|
| today / current week / current year | present perfect | Aquesta setmana hem tingut dues reunions. |
| yesterday / last week / dated past | periphrastic past | La setmana passada vam tenir-ne quatre. |
| current result or life experience | present perfect | No he conduït mai de nit. |
| closed narrative episode | periphrastic past | En entrar, va saludar tothom. |
| same-day event in much Valencian usage | periphrastic past is common (regional: Valencian) | Este matí vaig parlar amb ella. |
Open and closed time frames
An open frame includes the speech moment: today is still today; this month has not ended; “so far” explicitly reaches the present. A closed frame is detached from now. Central Catalan makes this distinction particularly visible.
Minimal pair 1: today or yesterday
Avui he esmorzat al balcó perquè feia bon temps.
Today I had breakfast on the balcony because the weather was nice. (current day)
Ahir vaig esmorzar al balcó abans d'anar a la feina.
Yesterday I had breakfast on the balcony before going to work. (finished day)
Minimal pair 2: current year or past year
Enguany hem visitat tres parcs naturals.
This year we've visited three natural parks. (the year is still open)
L'any passat vam visitar tres parcs naturals.
Last year we visited three natural parks. (closed period)
An exact clock time does not automatically close the frame. At two in the afternoon, a Central speaker can say Aquest matí he anat al dentista a les nou because the visit belongs to today. The present perfect is not reserved for events whose precise time is unknown.
Present result and past episode
Without a time adverbial, discourse decides what matters. The present perfect makes a completed event answer a present question; the periphrastic past places it on a past narrative line.
Minimal pair 3: result available now or historical event
He actualitzat l'aplicació i ara ja funciona bé.
I've updated the app and now it works properly. (present result)
Vaig actualitzar l'aplicació abans del viatge de juny.
I updated the app before the trip in June. (past episode)
Minimal pair 4: current status or event at a gathering
No he vist la Sílvia encara; saps si vindrà?
I haven't seen Sílvia yet; do you know whether she'll come? (up to now)
No vaig veure la Sílvia a la festa de dissabte.
I didn't see Sílvia at Saturday's party. (closed event)
Adverbs such as ja, encara no, mai, fins ara often support current relevance, but they are not magical triggers. Ja vaig llegir aquell llibre durant les vacances is natural because the holiday supplies a finished frame. The whole discourse outranks a memorized word list.
Questions can frame the answer
A question with the present perfect asks about experience or a current period. A question with the periphrastic past asks for a past episode.
Minimal pair 5: today's practical question or a dated event
Has dinat? Si no, queda una mica d'arròs.
Have you eaten lunch? If not, there's some rice left. (relevant now)
Vas dinar amb els clients després de la reunió?
Did you have lunch with the clients after the meeting? (past episode)
Minimal pair 6: experience or occasion
Has pujat mai al Canigó?
Have you ever climbed Canigó? (life experience up to now)
Quan vas pujar al Canigó per primera vegada?
When did you climb Canigó for the first time? (identified occasion)
The English present perfect behaves similarly in these last examples, but do not overgeneralize from that overlap. Central Catalan uses its compound perfect more freely with current-day events than several English standards do.
Hodiernal use and regional change
Hodiernal simply means “belonging to today.” In traditional descriptions of Central Catalan, today's completed events strongly favor the present perfect, while earlier days favor the periphrastic past. Actual speakers also use discourse framing: a newsreader summarizing today's developments may use the present perfect, while a speaker telling this morning as a closed story may choose the periphrastic past.
Aquest migdia el consell ha aprovat el nou pressupost. (journalistic)
At midday today the council approved the new budget. (reported as today's development)
Aquest matí vaig sortir sense paraigua i em vaig mullar de cap a peus.
This morning I went out without an umbrella and got soaked from head to toe. (the morning framed as a closed story)
Both can occur in Central usage, but they do different discourse work. The second does not prove that aquest matí always takes the periphrastic past.
(regional: Valencian) Much Valencian usage extends the simple or periphrastic past into same-day contexts where Central speakers favor the present perfect: Este matí vaig parlar amb la metgessa is normal regional usage. (regional: Balearic) Balearic systems also show their own balance between compound and perfective past forms. (formal) IEC- and AVL-oriented writing may reflect different regional norms; consistency and audience matter more than imposing one distribution everywhere.
Dialogue: an open problem becomes a past story
—Has parlat amb el propietari avui? La calefacció encara no funciona. —Sí, hi he parlat fa una hora i ha promès enviar un tècnic.
—Have you spoken to the landlord today? The heating still isn't working. —Yes, I spoke to him an hour ago and he promised to send a technician.
—I l'última vegada què va passar? —Hi vaig parlar dilluns i el tècnic no va venir.
—And what happened last time? —I spoke to him on Monday and the technician didn't come.
The first exchange uses the present perfect because today's conversation bears directly on the unresolved heating problem. The follow-up shifts to l'última vegada and dilluns, a closed episode, so va passar, vaig parlar, va venir build a past narrative. Replacing hi he parlat with hi vaig parlar in the first answer would detach the call and present it more like a completed anecdote.
Ambiguous English prompts
- “I sent the form this morning.” If today remains the active frame: Aquest matí he enviat el formulari. If the speaker narrates the morning as closed: Aquest matí vaig enviar el formulari.
- “We didn't receive an answer.” Up to now: No hem rebut cap resposta. During a concluded procedure: No vam rebre cap resposta.
- “Did you call her?” About the current task: L'has trucada? About yesterday's sequence: La vas trucar? The participle agreement in l'has trucada is a separate issue; tense choice comes first.
Correction task
Apply the Central baseline unless the context says otherwise.
- Ahir hem acabat l'inventari.
- Fins ara no vam detectar cap errada.
- El 2022 he canviat de feina.
- Este matí vaig portar els papers a l'ajuntament. (regional: Valencian)
Answers: Ahir vam acabar; Fins ara no hem detectat; El 2022 vaig canviar. Sentence 4 is already correct in Valencian usage and should not be “fixed” merely to imitate Central he portat.
Common Mistakes
❌ La setmana passada hem llogat una furgoneta.
A finished week takes the periphrastic past in the Central baseline.
✅ La setmana passada vam llogar una furgoneta.
Last week we rented a van.
❌ Encara no vaig acabar l'article.
Wrong for an unfinished up-to-now frame in the intended Central reading.
✅ Encara no he acabat l'article.
I haven't finished the article yet.
❌ He enviat el paquet ahir a la tarda.
The compound perfect conflicts with the explicitly finished frame ahir.
✅ Vaig enviar el paquet ahir a la tarda.
I sent the parcel yesterday afternoon.
❌ He anat veure l'exposició el 2018.
A dated, closed year requires a past narrative form.
✅ Vaig anar a veure l'exposició el 2018.
I went to see the exhibition in 2018.
Key Takeaways
- In the Central baseline, use the present perfect inside an open current frame and the periphrastic past inside a finished frame.
- Current relevance can favor he parlat; a self-contained past episode favors vaig parlar.
- Same-day use is strong in Central Catalan but not uniform across Catalan varieties.
- Time adverbials guide the choice only as part of a larger discourse frame.
- Regional consistency is grammatical competence: do not treat a standard Valencian same-day past as an error.
