The normal Central Catalan possessive noun phrase uses a definite article before a tonic possessive: el meu llibre, la teva jaqueta, els seus amics, les nostres claus. English my and Spanish mi do not take an article, so omitting Catalan el/la/els/les is a persistent transfer error. The article, possessive, noun, and adjective form one agreement system; Tonic Possessives develops the possessive paradigm beyond article choice.
The article is absent in several real constructions: postnominal possessives after an indefinite or demonstrative, predicative possessives, restricted weak forms such as mon pare, and lexical expressions such as a casa meva. These are structured alternatives, not free deletion.
The normal article + tonic possessive pattern
The possessive agrees in gender and number with the possessed noun, not with the possessor. The article shows the same agreement.
| Possessor | Masculine singular | Feminine singular | Masculine plural | Feminine plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| jo | el meu | la meva | els meus | les meves |
| tu | el teu | la teva | els teus | les teves |
| ell/ella/vostè | el seu | la seva | els seus | les seves |
| nosaltres | el nostre | la nostra | els nostres | les nostres |
| vosaltres | el vostre | la vostra | els vostres | les vostres |
| ells/elles/vostès | el seu | la seva | els seus | les seves |
He deixat el meu abric i la meva jaqueta al cotxe.
I left my coat and my jacket in the car.
Both possessions have one possessor, but abric selects masculine el meu and jaqueta selects feminine la meva. The article does not elide before the vowel in abric because the immediately following word is meu: el meu abric, not l'meu abric.
Totes les meves cosines petites portaran els seus instruments nous.
All my young cousins will bring their new instruments.
This sentence displays two full agreement chains: feminine plural totes les meves cosines petites and masculine plural els seus instruments nous.
What the article contributes
The preposed possessive normally identifies a definite referent, so the definite article is natural: la meva bicicleta means the bicycle identified through its relation to me. Other determiners produce different reference and normally move the tonic possessive after the noun.
| Determiner | Normal order | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| definite article | el meu llibre | my identifiable book |
| indefinite article | un llibre meu | one book of mine |
| demonstrative | aquest llibre meu | this book of mine |
| quantifier | dos llibres meus | two books of mine |
Aquest és el meu llibre; l'altre és un llibre meu que t'he deixat.
This is my book; the other is a book of mine that I lent you.
This minimal pair is about discourse status. El meu llibre identifies the relevant book; un llibre meu selects one member from the speaker's collection.
M'agraden aquests dibuixos teus, sobretot els dos més acolorits.
I like these drawings of yours, especially the two most colorful ones.
The demonstrative occupies the central determiner position, so the possessive follows dibuixos. Do not stack aquests els teus dibuixos.
With tots/totes, the article remains: tots els meus llibres, totes les nostres amigues. This quantifier combines with, rather than replaces, the definite article.
Tots els nostres veïns coneixen aquesta amiga meva.
All our neighbors know this friend of mine.
Predicative and independent possessives
After ser, a possessive can be predicative and appears without an article: El paraigua és meu. It describes ownership rather than forming a noun phrase before an overt noun.
Aquestes ulleres són meves, però l'estoig és teu.
These glasses are mine, but the case is yours.
When the noun is omitted and the possessive itself stands for “mine/yours,” the article returns: el meu, la teva, els nostres. The article supplies gender and number for the understood noun.
El teu ordinador funciona millor que el meu.
Your computer works better than mine.
In el meu, the omitted noun ordinador is masculine singular. Compare predicative Aquest ordinador és meu, where there is no article before meu.
Kinship and the weak possessives
Catalan retains unstressed possessives that occur without an article: mon/ma, ton/ta, son/sa and the plurals mos/mes, tos/tes, sos/ses. In contemporary usage they are restricted mainly to close kinship—especially older generations—and fixed expressions. The neutral Central forms el meu pare, la meva mare are always available.
| Article + tonic form | Weak form without article |
|---|---|
| el meu pare | mon pare |
| la meva mare | ma mare |
| el teu avi | ton avi |
| les seves ties | ses ties |
Mon pare i ma mare arribaran demà al vespre.
My father and mother will arrive tomorrow evening.
This is standard but lexically restricted. Do not create mon ordinador or ma bicicleta as neutral everyday Central Catalan merely by analogy.
The weak forms can be more productive in some varieties (regional), and forms such as mon pare are particularly familiar in Valencian speech. They still replace the entire article + tonic possessive sequence; do not say el mon pare.
Other articleless patterns
The home expression casa meva, casa teva, casa seva is conventional without an article, especially after a preposition: a casa meva, de casa teva. The pattern should be learned as a lexical construction rather than generalized to every noun.
Soparem a casa meva i després anirem a casa teva.
We'll have dinner at my place and then go to yours.
Vocatives can also place a possessive after the noun without an article: mare meva! Predicative, locative, and vocative constructions each explain their own omission.
The possessive llur/llurs means “belonging to them” and normally appears without an article: llur decisió, llurs decisions. It is now (formal) (literary) and should not be used for a singular possessor.
Els investigadors van publicar llurs conclusions.
The researchers published their conclusions. (formal/literary)
In ordinary speech, les seves conclusions is natural but potentially ambiguous about the possessor; formal llurs conclusions explicitly points to a plural possessor.
Regional possessive forms
Central Catalan normally uses meva, teva, seva and their plurals. The series meua, teua, seua; meues, teues, seues predominates in Valencian and Northwestern Catalan and also occurs in Northern Catalan, Eivissan, and part of Majorcan and Minorcan (regional). It still takes the ordinary article in standard Valencian: la meua casa, les seues claus. Both the -v- and -u- series are standard.
(regional: Balearic) (informal) the salat article can combine with the local possessive system in phrases such as es meu llibre, sa meva germana, or locally sa meua germana. General formal writing uses the general article—el meu llibre, la meva germana, or la meua germana according to the local possessive form. Choose one locally appropriate paradigm coherently; la meua germana ... les seves maletes jars in a neutral Valencian passage because it switches to Central morphology without a communicative reason.
English and Spanish false assumptions
English my is invariable, while Catalan distinguishes meu/meva/meus/meves. Spanish mi also lacks article and gender agreement, so meu llibre copied from either language is incomplete in the neutral preposed construction. Lexical cognates can mislead too: Catalan els meus parents means “my relatives,” not English “my parents”; the latter are els meus pares.
Els meus pares i els altres parents es reuniran diumenge.
My parents and the other relatives will meet on Sunday.
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting the article before a normal preposed tonic possessive.
❌ Meva germana treballa a l'hospital.
Incorrect — the neutral Central phrase is la meva germana.
✅ La meva germana treballa a l'hospital.
My sister works at the hospital.
2. Agreeing with the possessor instead of the possessed noun.
❌ En Marc ha perdut el seu cartera negra.
Incorrect — cartera is feminine, regardless of Marc's gender.
✅ En Marc ha perdut la seva cartera negra.
Marc has lost his black wallet.
3. Stacking a demonstrative and a definite article.
❌ Aquesta la meva proposta és més senzilla.
Incorrect — the demonstrative replaces the article, and the possessive follows the noun.
✅ Aquesta proposta meva és més senzilla.
This proposal of mine is simpler.
4. Misreading the false cognate parents.
❌ Els meus parents viuen amb mi.
Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘my parents’ — parents means relatives in Catalan.
✅ Els meus pares viuen amb mi.
My parents live with me.
5. Mixing Central and Valencian possessive forms.
❌ La meua germana ha portat les seves maletes.
Inconsistent in a neutral Valencian passage — use seues with meua.
✅ La meua germana ha portat les seues maletes.
My sister brought her suitcases. (Valencian)
Key Takeaways
The normal Central pattern is article + tonic possessive + noun: el meu llibre, les seves claus. The article and possessive agree with the possessed noun. Put the possessive after a noun introduced by an indefinite, demonstrative, or numeral; omit the article in predicative és meu, restricted mon pare, and lexical a casa meva. Valencian meua/teua/seua and Central meva/teva/seva are parallel standard systems that should not be mixed casually.
