English normally places an attributive adjective before its noun: a new book. Arabic normally reverses that order: كتاب جديد, literally “book new.” The noun comes first, and each adjective follows it.
Order is only the beginning. A true attributive adjective matches its noun in definiteness, gender, number, and case. This agreement also distinguishes “the big house” from the complete sentence “the house is big”: البيت الكبير versus البيت كبير.
The basic noun–adjective order
اشتريت كتابا جديدا.
ishtaraytu kitāban jadīdan.
I bought a new book.
تسكن ليلى في شقة صغيرة.
taskunu laylā fī shaqqatin ṣaghīra(h).
Layla lives in a small apartment.
In كتابًا جديدًا, the adjective follows the noun and matches masculine singular, indefinite, and accusative. In شقةٍ صغيرةٍ, both words are feminine singular, indefinite, and genitive after في.
English speakers often understand the vocabulary but reverse the sequence under transfer from English. Make noun first the automatic starting point: تقرير مهم “an important report,” مدينة كبيرة “a large city,” سؤال صعب “a difficult question.”
Definiteness separates a phrase from a sentence
An indefinite noun takes an indefinite attributive adjective. A definite noun takes a definite attributive adjective, usually with الـ on both words.
| Arabic | Structure | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| بَيْتٌ كَبِيرٌ | indefinite noun + indefinite adjective | a big house |
| الْبَيْتُ الْكَبِيرُ | definite noun + definite adjective | the big house |
| الْبَيْتُ كَبِيرٌ | definite subject + indefinite predicate | the house is big |
هذا هو الباب الرئيسي.
hādhā huwa l-bābu r-raʾīsiyy.
This is the main entrance.
الباب الرئيسي مغلق الآن.
al-bābu r-raʾīsiyyu mughlaqun al-ʾān.
The main entrance is closed now.
الباب مغلق الآن.
al-bābu mughlaqun al-ʾān.
The entrance is closed now.
In الباب الرئيسي, both words are definite, so الرئيسي identifies which entrance. In الباب مغلق, مغلق is indefinite and functions as the predicate “is closed.” There is no present-tense copula between them.
This definiteness contrast is structural, not optional style. الطالب المجتهد means “the diligent student”; الطالب مجتهد is a statement, “the student is diligent.”
Gender agreement
A feminine singular noun normally takes a feminine singular adjective, often marked with ة. A masculine singular noun takes the masculine form.
وصل طالب جديد إلى الصف.
waṣala ṭālibun jadīdun ʾilā ṣ-ṣaff.
A new male student arrived in the classroom.
وصلت طالبة جديدة إلى الصف.
waṣalat ṭālibatun jadīdatun ʾilā ṣ-ṣaff.
A new female student arrived in the classroom.
Grammatical gender belongs to the noun, not necessarily to a real-world sex. سيارة سريعة “a fast car” is feminine because سيارة is grammatically feminine. Some nouns have lexical gender that cannot be predicted from their ending, so learn the adjective together with a new noun when its gender is not obvious.
The masculine and feminine adjective page gives the broader formation system; the ordering principle remains noun before adjective.
Number agreement with human nouns
Human plural nouns normally take plural adjectives. Dual nouns take dual adjectives.
قابلت باحثين مصريين في المؤتمر.
qābaltu bāḥithayni miṣriyyayni fī l-muʾtamar.
I met two Egyptian researchers at the conference.
تحدث الموظفون الجدد مع المديرة.
taḥaddatha l-muwaẓẓafūna l-jududu maʿa l-mudīra(h).
The new employees spoke with the director.
شاركت الباحثات المتخصصات في الندوة.
shārakati l-bāḥithātu l-mutakhaṣṣiṣātu fī n-nadwa(h).
The specialized female researchers took part in the seminar.
The dual pair باحثَيْن مصريَّيْن matches masculine dual and accusative because it is the object of قابلت. الموظفون الجدد is masculine human plural and nominative; الباحثات المتخصصات is feminine human plural and nominative.
Non-human plurals take feminine-singular adjectives
A plural referring to things, concepts, or non-rational beings normally takes a feminine singular adjective, even when its singular noun is masculine.
قرأت كتبا جديدة عن تاريخ المدينة.
qaraʾtu kutuban jadīdatan ʿan tārīkhi l-madīna(h).
I read new books about the city’s history.
الطرق القديمة مزدحمة صباحا.
aṭ-ṭuruqu l-qadīmatu muzdaḥimatun ṣabāḥan.
The old roads are congested in the morning.
كتب is plural, but attributive جديدة is feminine singular. In the second sentence, القديمة is the definite feminine-singular adjective modifying الطرق, and predicate مزدحمة is likewise feminine singular.
This rule does not mean the noun itself has become singular. Verbs, pronouns, demonstratives, and adjectives each apply the non-human-plural agreement pattern in their own construction.
Case agreement
In fully inflected formal Arabic, an attributive adjective matches the noun’s case. Word order alone does not license a different ending.
جاء الطالب الجديد إلى المكتب.
jāʾa ṭ-ṭālibu l-jadīdu ʾilā l-maktab.
The new student came to the office. (Nominative subject.)
رأيت الطالب الجديد في المكتبة.
raʾaytu ṭ-ṭāliba l-jadīda fī l-maktaba(h).
I saw the new student in the library. (Accusative object.)
تحدثت مع الطالب الجديد بعد الدرس.
taḥaddathtu maʿa ṭ-ṭālibi l-jadīdi baʿda d-dars.
I spoke with the new student after class. (Genitive after مع.)
The adjective moves with the noun: الطالبُ الجديدُ, الطالبَ الجديدَ, الطالبِ الجديدِ. Ordinary unvocalized print hides these short vowels, but the syntactic agreement remains real. The full system is developed in Case Agreement on Adjectives.
Ordering more than one adjective
Several adjectives can follow one noun. Arabic does not have a single rigid everyday sequence equivalent to every English adjective-order mnemonic. A useful tendency is to place a classifying or closely identifying modifier nearer the noun, then add descriptive, evaluative, or newer information farther away. Context and established expressions can change the order.
ناقشنا تقريرا اقتصاديا دوليا جديدا.
nāqashnā taqrīran iqtiṣādiyyan dawliyyan jadīdan.
We discussed a new international economic report.
Here اقتصادي classifies the report most closely, دولي narrows its scope, and جديد adds a current descriptive property. All three remain masculine singular, indefinite, and accusative.
Equal descriptive properties are often coordinated with و:
استأجرنا غرفة واسعة ومضيئة.
istaʾjarnā ghurfatan wāsiʿatan wa-muḍīʾa(h).
We rented a spacious, bright room.
Without و, a stack can sound classificatory or tightly cumulative; with و, the speaker presents two parallel qualities. There is no honest shortcut for every long stack. Prefer two or three clear modifiers, and reorder or coordinate them if the intended grouping is hard to recover.
Nisba adjectives and participles can become nouns
A nisba form such as مصري “Egyptian” or اقتصادي “economic” behaves as an adjective when it modifies an expressed noun:
استضافت الجامعة باحثة مصرية متخصصة.
istaḍāfati l-jāmiʿatu bāḥithatan miṣriyyatan mutakhaṣṣiṣa(h).
The university hosted a specialized Egyptian researcher.
But context can substantivize the same form: المصري may mean “the Egyptian man,” with the understood noun omitted. Active and passive participles behave similarly. الموظف المسؤول means “the responsible employee / the employee in charge,” while المسؤول alone commonly means “the official” or “the person in charge.”
تحدثت مع الموظف المسؤول عن التسجيل.
taḥaddathtu maʿa l-muwaẓẓafi l-masʾūli ʿani t-tasjīl.
I spoke with the employee responsible for registration.
تحدثت مع المسؤول عن التسجيل.
taḥaddathtu maʿa l-masʾūli ʿani t-tasjīl.
I spoke with the person in charge of registration.
The second المسؤول is not an adjective placed before a missing overt noun by English rules; it has been lexicalized or substantivized as a noun in that context. Learn frequent institutional expressions as units while still recognizing their morphology.
Common Mistakes
Putting the adjective before the noun
❌ جديد كتاب وصل اليوم.
Incorrect under ordinary attributive order—Arabic places the noun before its adjective.
✅ وصل كتاب جديد اليوم.
waṣala kitābun jadīdun al-yawm.
A new book arrived today.
Marking only the noun as definite
❌ سلمت التقرير نهائي إلى المديرة.
Incorrect for ‘I delivered the final report’—the attributive adjective must also be definite and accusative.
✅ سلمت التقرير النهائي إلى المديرة صباحا.
sallamtu t-taqrīra n-nihāʾiyya ʾilā l-mudīrati ṣabāḥan.
I delivered the final report to the director in the morning.
Confusing attribution with predication
❌ «القاعة الواسعة» جملة كاملة.
Incorrect analysis—al-qāʿatu l-wāsiʿatu is a definite noun phrase, not a complete sentence by itself.
✅ القاعة الواسعة جاهزة لاستقبال الضيوف.
al-qāʿatu l-wāsiʿatu jāhizatun li-stiqbāli ḍ-ḍuyūf.
The spacious hall is ready to receive the guests.
Giving a non-human plural a plural adjective
❌ اشتريت كتبا جدد.
Incorrect—non-human plural kutub takes feminine-singular jadīda, not human masculine-plural judud.
✅ اشتريت كتبا جديدة للدورة.
ishtaraytu kutuban jadīdatan lid-dawra(h).
I bought new books for the course.
Matching gender but not case
❌ تحدثت مع الطالبة الجديدة.
taḥaddathtu maʿa ṭ-ṭālibati l-jadīdata
Incorrect reading—the adjective must be genitive l-jadīdati after maʿa, like its noun.
✅ تحدثت مع الطالبة الجديدة بعد المحاضرة.
taḥaddathtu maʿa ṭ-ṭālibati l-jadīdati baʿda l-muḥāḍara(h).
I spoke with the new female student after the lecture.
Key Takeaways
- Put an attributive adjective after its noun.
- Match noun and adjective in definiteness, gender, number, and case.
- البيت الكبير is “the big house,” while البيت كبير is “the house is big.”
- Human plurals generally take plural adjectives; non-human plurals normally take feminine-singular adjectives.
- In adjective stacks, place close classifying information near the noun and use و when presenting parallel qualities.
- Nisba forms and participles can be true adjectives or lexicalized nouns; interpret their role from the whole phrase.
