Purism, Borrowing, and Register

Arabic language planning has produced elegant, durable vocabulary, but contemporary Modern Standard Arabic also contains loans from many periods. The useful editorial question is not “Is this word purely Arabic?” It is “Does this expression name the right concept clearly for this audience in this genre?” هاتف and تلفون, حاسوب and كمبيوتر, مذياع and راديو show different balances of derivation, semantic extension, borrowing, and register.

Purism becomes linguistically misleading when it treats origin as a grammatical verdict. A loan can be fully integrated into Arabic syntax and morphology; a planned coinage can remain obscure; two forms can coexist with different regional or professional profiles. Formal contemporary MSA needs evidence, consistency, and comprehensibility—not an automatic ban on foreign ancestry.

Four routes into the modern lexicon

RouteExampleMorphological behaviorEditorial question
native derivationحسب ← حاسوب، حوسبةArabic patterns and a modern familyIs this the field's established term?
semantic extensionهاتف “unseen caller/voice” → “telephone”ordinary masculine noun; plural هواتفIs the extended sense now neutral?
calqueبريد إلكتروني “electronic mail”noun–adjective phrase with regular agreementDoes the phrase preserve the intended concept?
adapted borrowingراديو، تلفون، كمبيوتر، إنترنتArabic article, case, agreement, and sometimes derivationWhat register and regional profile does it have?
planned coinageالشابكة “the internet”feminine derived noun; regular Arabic syntaxWill this audience recognize it?

The routes are not rankings. هاتف is both inherited material and a planned modern semantic extension. حاسوب is a planned native-root formation. بريد إلكتروني is a calque, while إيميل is a borrowing. Every one of these can be grammatical Arabic.

💡
Origin tells you how a word entered the lexicon. Register tells you where it works now. Never substitute the first question for the second.

Doublets divide work by register

هاتف and تلفون

هاتف is the neutral cross-regional MSA default in edited prose (formal/neutral). تلفون is a documented adapted loan, familiar in speech and some regional writing (informal/regional or less formal). A technical history of telecommunications may legitimately quote either, while an international public form will usually choose هاتف.

يرجى كتابة رقم الهاتف في الخانة الأخيرة.

yurjā kitābatu raqmi l-hātifi fī l-khānati l-ʾakhīra(h).

Please write the telephone number in the last field. (formal/cross-regional)

سجل المتحف تلفونا قديما ضمن مجموعة الاتصالات.

sajjala l-matḥafu tilifūnan qadīman ḍimna majmūʿati l-ittiṣālāt.

The museum catalogued an old telephone in its communications collection. (adapted loan in a historical-object context)

حاسوب and كمبيوتر

حاسوب is a strong formal and educational term; its plural is حواسيب, and حوسبة supports a productive technical family. كمبيوتر is a widespread adapted loan in both speech and technical environments. Neither should be declared universally absent from formal sources.

زودت المدرسة المختبر بعشرين حاسوبا جديدا.

zawwadati l-madrasatu l-mukhtabara bi-ʿishrīna ḥāsūban jadīdan.

The school supplied the laboratory with twenty new computers. (formal/educational)

يستعمل فريق الدعم كلمة كمبيوتر في المواد الموجهة إلى هذا السوق.

yastaʿmilu farīqu d-daʿmi kalimata kumbiyūtar fī l-mawāddi l-muwajjahati ʾilā hādhā s-sūq.

The support team uses the word kumbiyūtar in materials aimed at this market. (documented audience choice)

مذياع and راديو

مذياع is a native-pattern term associated with formal or elevated usage; راديو is an established loan and often the unmarked everyday word. A news organization may call the medium الإذاعة, the receiving device مذياع, and a branded service راديو. Concept and collocation matter as much as origin.

احتفظ الجد بمذياع صغير يعمل بالبطارية.

iḥtafaẓa l-jaddu bi-midhyāʿin ṣaghīrin yaʿmalu bi-l-baṭṭāriyya(h).

Grandfather kept a small battery-powered radio. (formal/literary lexical choice)

سمعت المقابلة في الراديو أثناء القيادة.

samiʿtu l-muqābalata fī r-rādyū ʾathnāʾa l-qiyāda(h).

I heard the interview on the radio while driving. (neutral contemporary usage)

A planned coinage can remain marked

The Cairo Academy records الشابكة for the internet, while الإنترنت is overwhelmingly recognizable as the ordinary borrowed label. الشابكة may be appropriate in a text that adopts and defines academy terminology (formal/institution-specific). Dropping it into public instructions without definition may reduce comprehension rather than improve Arabic.

يعرف المعجم الشابكة بأنها شبكة الإنترنت الدولية.

yuʿarrifu l-muʿjamu sh-shābikata bi-ʾannahā shabakatu l-ʾintarniti d-dawliyya(h).

The dictionary defines al-shābika as the international internet network. (lexicographic/institution-specific)

يمكن تقديم الطلب عبر الإنترنت حتى نهاية الشهر.

yumkinu taqdīmu ṭ-ṭalabi ʿabra l-ʾintarniti ḥattā nihāyati sh-shahr.

The application may be submitted online until the end of the month. (clear public-facing MSA)

This contrast is descriptive, not dismissive. A low-frequency coinage may be precise and useful in one institution. It simply needs audience-aware introduction.

Formality does not require maximum purism

In formal prose, choose the expression that readers can interpret consistently. بريد إلكتروني is usually safer than إيميل in official correspondence, but a user-interface label may use the locally established loan. A medical or computing document may preserve an international loan because specialists recognize it immediately.

أرسل القسم نسخة من القرار بالبريد الإلكتروني.

ʾarsala l-qismu nuskhatan mina l-qarāri bi-l-barīdi l-ʾilikturūniyy.

The department sent a copy of the decision by email. (formal/administrative)

وصلني إيميل التأكيد بعد دقائق.

waṣalanī ʾīmīlu t-taʾkīdi baʿda daqāʾiq.

The confirmation email reached me after a few minutes. (informal cross-regional digital usage)

English speakers sometimes assume that a borrowed word is automatically informal and a longer Arabic phrase automatically formal. Neither inference is safe. إنترنت is borrowed but neutral; a rare native-looking coinage can be highly marked. Register must be learned from use.

💡
For a public document, put recognition before etymological elegance. For a specialist document, put terminological precision before both. Then apply one choice consistently.

Build an editorial term record

For each contested concept, record:

  1. preferred term and permitted alternatives;
  2. definition and any narrower distinctions;
  3. gender, plural, adjective, and common collocations;
  4. region, institution, genre, and date of the evidence;
  5. whether an alternative must appear at first mention or in the index.

A dictionary establishes that a form exists; comparable current texts show its register and reach. Search government material against government material and scientific writing against scientific writing. Do not infer dominance from raw web totals, and never copy source sentences into the guide.

اختار الفريق مصطلحا واحدا وذكر البدائل في مسرد الوثيقة.

ikhtāra l-farīqu muṣṭalaḥan wāḥidan wa-dhakara l-badāʾila fī masradi l-wathīqa(h).

The team chose one term and listed the alternatives in the document's glossary. (formal editorial practice)

راجع المترجم المصطلح في معجمين ثم فحص استعماله في نصوص حديثة.

rājaʿa l-mutarjimu l-muṣṭalaḥa fī muʿjamayni thumma faḥaṣa stiʿmālahu fī nuṣūṣin ḥadītha(h).

The translator checked the term in two dictionaries and then examined its use in recent texts. (professional method)

Common Mistakes

Treating every loan as incorrect Arabic

❌ الإنترنت كلمة أجنبية، لذلك لا تجوز في نص رسمي.

Incorrect — foreign origin does not prevent an established loan from being neutral formal vocabulary.

✅ تستعمل المؤسسات كلمة الإنترنت في نصوص رسمية معاصرة.

tastaʿmilu l-muʾassasātu kalimata l-ʾintarniti fī nuṣūṣin rasmiyyatin muʿāṣira(h).

Institutions use the word ‘internet’ in contemporary official texts.

Assuming academy recognition guarantees universal familiarity

❌ ما دام المعجم يسجل الشابكة فسيفهمها كل قارئ.

Incorrect — dictionary recognition and audience familiarity are different measurements.

✅ أعرف الشابكة عند استعمالها لجمهور لا يعرف هذا المصطلح.

ʾuʿarrifu sh-shābikata ʿinda stiʿmālihā li-jumhūrin lā yaʿrifu hādhā l-muṣṭalaḥ.

I define al-shābika when using it for an audience unfamiliar with the term.

Switching between doublets for decoration

❌ انتقل الدليل بين حاسوب وكمبيوتر بلا سبب.

Editorial problem — unexplained alternation can suggest a distinction that does not exist.

✅ يعتمد الدليل مصطلح حاسوب، ويذكر كمبيوتر عند أول ظهور فقط.

yaʿtamidu d-dalīlu muṣṭalaḥa ḥāsūbin, wa-yadhkuru kumbiyūtar ʿinda ʾawwali ẓuhūrin faqaṭ.

The guide adopts the term ḥāsūb and mentions kumbiyūtar only at first occurrence.

Regularizing morphology from ideology instead of evidence

❌ أستطيع جمع كل كلمة مقترضة بإضافة ات.

Incorrect — loan status does not erase lexicalized broken plurals or uncountable uses.

✅ أتحقق من جمع الكلمة ومن استعمالها قبل نشر النص.

ʾataḥaqqu min jamʿi l-kalimati wa-mini stiʿmālihā qabla nashri n-naṣṣ.

I verify a word's plural and its usage before publishing the text.

Key Takeaways

  • Native derivation, semantic extension, calquing, borrowing, and planning all contribute to contemporary MSA.
  • Judge a term by conceptual accuracy, audience recognition, genre, and consistency—not ancestry alone.
  • Label marked institutional, regional, informal, literary, and specialist choices.
  • Preserve useful doublets in a glossary, but choose one form consistently in running prose.
  • Verify form in authoritative dictionaries and register in comparable current texts; write original examples rather than copying evidence.
