Editing toward Clear Contemporary Arabic

Clear contemporary Arabic is formal Modern Standard Arabic written so that its intended readers can recover the actor, action, logical relation, and practical consequence without rereading. It is not “simplified dialect,” and it does not ban nominalization, passive voice, or long sentences. It uses each of those resources only when it contributes something the genre needs.

This page treats clarity as an editing discipline. A public explanation, policy summary, professional email, or cross-regional report usually benefits from finite clauses, current shared vocabulary, explicit connectors, and short-to-medium sentences. A legal definition or academic qualification may require greater density. The standard is not shortness by itself but a visible clause spine.

For the deeper choice between process-centered nouns and event-centered clauses, see Nominal versus Verbal Style.

A contemporary clarity profile

Before revising a sentence, define its audience and task. Public-facing prose (formal) needs a reader to act or understand quickly; specialist prose (academic/legal) may retain necessary technical terms but should define them. These choices affect the whole sentence.

The same proposition can appear in an overloaded institutional register or in clear formal Arabic:

تمت المباشرة في تنفيذ عملية إعادة تنظيم مواعيد استقبال المراجعين من قبل الإدارة.

tammati l-mubāsharatu fī tanfīdhi ʿamaliyyati ʾiʿādati tanẓīmi mawāʿīdi istiqbāli l-murājiʿīna min qibali l-ʾidāra(h).

Implementation of the process of reorganizing visitor reception times was initiated by the administration. (grammatical, dense administrative style)

أعادت الإدارة تنظيم مواعيد استقبال المراجعين، وبدأ العمل بالجدول الجديد اليوم.

ʾaʿādati l-ʾidāratu tanẓīma mawāʿīdi istiqbāli l-murājiʿīna, wa-badaʾa l-ʿamalu bi-l-jadwali l-jadīdi l-yawm.

The administration reorganized visitor reception times, and the new schedule took effect today. (clear formal revision)

The revision restores الإدارة as agent, converts a four-noun action chain into أعادت ... تنظيم, and separates the decision from its effective date. It remains formal MSA; clarity has not lowered its register.

💡
Find the sentence’s main finite verb. If you cannot identify it at a glance, circle every verbal noun and restore the most important hidden action as a clause.

Shorten chains, not ideas

Arabic iḍāfa and verbal-noun chains can package information efficiently, but a long chain forces the reader to infer attachment. English premodifier chains create a similar problem when translated word for word. Break the chain with a preposition, relative clause, or second sentence.

أعلنت الجامعة خطة تحديث نظام متابعة أداء طلاب الدراسات العليا.

ʾaʿlanati l-jāmiʿatu khuṭṭata taḥdīthi niẓāmi mutābaʿati ʾadāʾi ṭullābi d-dirāsāti l-ʿulyā.

The university announced a plan to update the system for monitoring graduate students’ performance. (dense but recoverable formal sentence)

أعلنت الجامعة خطة جديدة. وتهدف الخطة إلى تحديث النظام الذي تتابع به الكليات أداء طلاب الدراسات العليا.

ʾaʿlanati l-jāmiʿatu khuṭṭatan jadīda(h). wa-tahdifu l-khuṭṭatu ʾilā taḥdīthi n-niẓāmi lladhī tutābiʿu bihi l-kulliyyātu ʾadāʾa ṭullābi d-dirāsāti l-ʿulyā.

The university announced a new plan. The plan aims to update the system that colleges use to monitor graduate students’ performance. (lower density; relationships explicit)

The first version may suit an executive summary. The second suits a public explanation because it exposes the purpose and the user of the system. Good editing does not mechanically split every sentence; it chooses the density the audience can process.

Coordination with و is broad: it can add, sequence, contrast, or simply place statements beside one another. When the relation drives the argument, name it. Use لأن for a reason, لذلك for a result, لكن for contrast, and مع ذلك for concession.

تأخر وصول البيانات، لذلك أجل الفريق نشر التقرير يومين.

taʾakhkhara wuṣūlu l-bayānāti, li-dhālika ʾajjala l-farīqu nashra t-taqrīri yawmayn.

The data arrived late, so the team postponed publication of the report by two days.

كانت العينة صغيرة، لكن النتائج تكشف اتجاها يستحق دراسة أوسع.

kānati l-ʿayyinatu ṣaghīratan, lākinna n-natāʾija takshifu ttijāhan yastaḥiqqu dirāsatan ʾawsaʿ.

The sample was small, but the results reveal a trend that deserves broader study. (formal/academic)

Explicit linking also controls stance. The second sentence does not claim that a small sample proves a conclusion; لكن preserves the limitation while allowing a measured inference.

Control synonymy and archaism

Arabic rhetorical tradition often values lexical variation, but procedural and explanatory prose usually benefits from controlled synonymy: select one term for one concept and repeat it when reference matters. Alternating طلب، معاملة، ملف، إضبارة merely to avoid repetition can falsely suggest four objects. Define any necessary distinction instead.

Likewise, inherited words are not wrong because they are old. Use a marked Classical or ceremonial expression when that voice is intended (literary/Classical); do not insert it as a generic signal of seriousness.

وردت إلى الوحدة ثلاثة طلبات، وأحالت الوحدة الطلبات نفسها إلى اللجنة المختصة.

waradat ʾilā l-waḥdati thalāthatu ṭalabāt, wa-ʾaḥālati l-waḥdatu ṭ-ṭalabāti nafsahā ʾilā l-lajnati l-mukhtaṣṣa(h).

The unit received three applications and referred those same applications to the competent committee. (deliberate repetition preserves reference)

💡
Do not replace a repeated technical term until you have checked whether the replacement changes its extension. In formal explanatory prose, stable reference is more valuable than decorative variation.

Agency, stance, and case in speech

A passive is clear when the affected item is the topic and the actor is genuinely immaterial. It becomes evasive when the reader needs responsibility. Compare أُغْلِقَ الطريقُ “the road was closed” with أغلقت البلدية الطريق “the municipality closed the road.” Neither voice is inherently better; the question is whether the omitted actor matters.

Formal delivery also does not require every possible final short vowel. Case is real grammar, and connected endings often clarify structure, but a genuine sentence-final pause normally suppresses a short ending. A newsreader, lecturer, and spontaneous panelist can all speak MSA with different degrees of audible inflection. Editing a spoken script should mark meaningful phrase groups, not force a classroom parsing recital onto every line.

A short clear-genre model

سيغلق مركز الخدمة أبوابه يوم الجمعة لتحديث النظام الإلكتروني. ويمكن للمراجعين تقديم الطلبات عبر الموقع خلال فترة الإغلاق. وسيعيد المركز فتح أبوابه صباح الأحد، لذلك لن تتأثر الطلبات المقدمة قبل الخميس.

sa-yughliqu markazu l-khidmati ʾabwābahu yawma l-jumuʿati li-taḥdīthi n-niẓāmi l-ʾiliktirūniyy. wa-yumkinu lil-murājiʿīna taqdīmu ṭ-ṭalabāti ʿabra l-mawqiʿi khilāla fatrati l-ʾighlāq. wa-sa-yuʿīdu l-markazu fatḥa ʾabwābihi ṣabāḥa l-ʾaḥad, li-dhālika lan tataʾaththara ṭ-ṭalabātu l-muqaddamatu qabla l-khamīs.

The service center will close on Friday to update its electronic system. Visitors can submit applications through the website during the closure. The center will reopen on Sunday morning, so applications submitted before Thursday will not be affected. (public-information model)

The model names the institution, explains the reason, gives an alternative, states the reopening time, and marks the consequence. Its vocabulary is shared and contemporary. Sentence length varies, but each sentence has one recoverable main claim.

An editing algorithm

Revise in this order:

  1. Recover the proposition: write actor, action, affected item, time, and logical relation in the margin.
  2. Choose the topic: keep a passive or nominalization only if the process or affected item should remain central.
  3. Expose the spine: restore a finite verb and split any chain whose attachment is uncertain.
  4. Name the link: replace an overloaded و with a causal, result, contrastive, or sequential connector where needed.
  5. Normalize the lexicon: keep one term per concept; label dialect, Classical quotation, and specialist terminology.
  6. Read aloud: preserve useful connected endings but let genuine pauses sound like pauses.

Apply it to this draft:

في إطار العمل على القيام بإجراءات تحسين مستوى الاستجابة، تمت إعادة دراسة آلية توزيع الموظفين.

fī ʾiṭāri l-ʿamali ʿalā l-qiyāmi bi-ʾijrāʾāti taḥsīni mustawā l-istijāba(h), tammat ʾiʿādatu dirāsati ʾāliyyati tawzīʿi l-muwaẓẓafīn.

Within the framework of working to carry out response-level improvement procedures, the mechanism for distributing employees was restudied. (grammatical but opaque draft)

راجع مدير المركز توزيع الموظفين لكي يسرع الرد على المراجعين.

rājaʿa mudīru l-markazi tawzīʿa l-muwaẓẓafīna li-kay yusarriʿa r-radda ʿalā l-murājiʿīn.

The center director reviewed staff allocation in order to speed up responses to visitors. (actor and purpose restored)

The revision makes a substantive choice: it identifies the director. If the institution, not the director, owns the decision, substitute the accurate actor rather than preserving a vague passive.

Common Mistakes

Treating an unlabeled dialect form as cross-regional MSA

بدنا نخلص المعاملة قبل بكرة.

bidnā nkhalliṣi l-muʿāmala(h) qabl bukra.

We need to finish the paperwork before tomorrow. (informal, regional: Levantine; valid in its own code, not neutral MSA)

يجب أن ننهي المعاملة قبل الغد.

yajibu ʾan nunhiya l-muʿāmalata qabla l-ghad.

We must finish the paperwork before tomorrow. (formal MSA)

Using archaism as a substitute for precision

نحيطكم علما بأن الأمر المشار إليه آنفا قد غدا قيد النظر.

nuḥīṭukum ʿilman bi-ʾanna l-ʾamra l-mushāra ʾilayhi ʾānifan qad ghadā qayda n-naẓar.

We inform you that the matter referred to above has come under consideration. (grammatical, ceremonially bureaucratic)

نراجع الآن الطلب المذكور في رسالتكم.

nurājiʿu l-ʾāna ṭ-ṭalaba l-madhkūra fī risālatikum.

We are now reviewing the application mentioned in your message. (current and specific)

Copying an English premodifier chain

برنامج دعم تطوير مهارات معلمي العلوم الجديد

barnāmaju daʿmi taṭwīri mahārāti muʿallimī l-ʿulūmi l-jadīd

an ambiguous chain: ‘new’ may describe the program or the science teachers

البرنامج الجديد لدعم تطوير مهارات معلمي العلوم

al-barnāmaju l-jadīdu li-daʿmi taṭwīri mahārāti muʿallimī l-ʿulūm

the new program supporting the development of science teachers’ skills (attachment clarified)

Assuming spontaneous formality requires every final case ending

سنناقش الاقتراح الجديد بعد الاجتماع.

sanunāqishu l-iqtirāḥa l-jadīda baʿda l-ijtimāʿi.

We will discuss the new proposal after the meeting. (valid fully inflected, highly monitored reading)

سنناقش الاقتراح الجديد صباحا بعد الاجتماع.

sanunāqishu l-iqtirāḥa l-jadīda ṣabāḥan baʿda l-ijtimāʿ.

We will discuss the new proposal in the morning after the meeting. (connected case where useful; natural final pause)

Repeating passive formulas until responsibility disappears

تم رصد المشكلة وتم إعداد الحل وتم إرسال التعليمات.

tamma raṣdu l-mushkilati wa-tamma ʾiʿdādu l-ḥalli wa-tamma ʾirsālu t-taʿlīmāt.

The problem was identified, the solution was prepared, and the instructions were sent. (grammatical, but agency and sequence are obscured)

رصد فريق الدعم المشكلة، وأعد المهندس الحل، ثم أرسل المدير التعليمات.

raṣada farīqu d-daʿmi l-mushkilata, wa-ʾaʿadda l-muhandisu l-ḥalla, thumma ʾarsala l-mudīru t-taʿlīmāt.

The support team identified the problem, the engineer prepared the solution, and then the director sent the instructions. (roles and sequence explicit)

Key Takeaways

  • Clear contemporary Arabic is a formal MSA style shaped by audience and purpose, not a retreat into dialect.
  • Preserve nominalization, passive voice, and long sentences when they organize information; revise them when they conceal it.
  • Break ambiguous chains, state important logical relations, and keep terminology stable.
  • Name agency when accountability matters, and distinguish grammatical case from the degree to which endings are heard in a particular delivery.
  • Label dialect, Classical quotation, literary elevation, and specialist terminology instead of blending them into an imaginary single “formal” voice.
