بقي and ظلّ for Continued States

Formal contemporary MSA uses بَقِيَ / يَبْقَى and ظَلَّ / يَظَلُّ for situations that continue. Both can correspond to English remain, stay, keep, or continue, but they organize the situation differently. بقي often focuses on what is left or what persists after other possibilities have ended; ظلّ characteristically views a state or activity as lasting through a stretch of time.

Each verb also has an ordinary lexical use and a copula-like use. Compare بقي الطبيب في العيادة “the doctor stayed in the clinic” with بقيت العيادة مفتوحةً “the clinic remained open.” In the second structure, the following adjective or noun is a predicate, much as it is after كان. A bare imperfect can instead name the continuing activity: ظلّ الطبيب يعملُ “the doctor kept working.”

The broader imperfect paradigm supplies every agreement cell; this page concentrates on the special meaning and syntax of these two governors.

Verified principal parts and core forms

بَقِيَ / يَبْقَى, root ب ق ي, is a Form-I final-weak verb. Its final ى survives in the ordinary indicative and subjunctive spelling, but the weak segment is deleted in the jussive يَبْقَ. ظَلَّ / يَظَلُّ, root ظ ل ل, is a Form-I geminate verb: the two root ل consonants contract under shadda in forms such as ظلّ and يظلّ.

Subjectبقي: perfectبقي: indicative imperfectظلّ: perfectظلّ: indicative imperfect
هوبَقِيَيَبْقَىظَلَّيَظَلُّ
هيبَقِيَتْتَبْقَىظَلَّتْتَظَلُّ
هما (masculine)بَقِيَايَبْقَيَانِظَلَّايَظَلَّانِ
همبَقُوايَبْقَوْنَظَلُّوايَظَلُّونَ

The table is deliberately small: these are not new conjugations, but two lexically distinct verbs whose weak and geminate stems must be learned accurately.

Lexical بقي: stay, remain, or be left

With a place phrase or quantity, بقي is a full lexical verb. It can locate someone who stays behind or identify what remains.

بقيت الطبيبة في العيادة حتى المساء.

baqiyati ṭ-ṭabībatu fī l-ʿiyādati ḥattā l-masāʾ.

The doctor stayed at the clinic until evening. (Female.)

بقي في المخزن صندوقان فقط بعد التوزيع.

baqiya fī l-makhzani ṣundūqāni faqaṭ baʿda t-tawzīʿ.

Only two boxes remained in the storeroom after distribution.

Here English may use there remained, but Arabic needs no dummy subject corresponding to English there. The postverbal dual subject صندوقان supplies the participants.

In negative clauses, the weak stem reveals its behavior clearly:

لم يبق في الملف إلا سؤال واحد.

lam yabqa fī l-malaffi ʾillā suʾālun wāḥid.

Only one question remained in the file.

لم governs the jussive, so indicative يبقى becomes يبقَ. This is genuine morphology, not an optional spelling simplification.

Copular بقي: remain in a state

Copular بقي takes a subject and a predicate. In fully inflected formal analysis, the subject is nominative and the predicate is accusative, as after كان. Ordinary unvocalized writing does not display that contrast, but the construction still controls agreement.

بقيت القاعة مفتوحة حتى السادسة.

baqiyati l-qāʿatu maftūḥatan ḥattā s-sādisa(h).

The hall remained open until six.

بقيت النوافذ مغلقة بسبب الغبار.

baqiyati n-nawāfidhu mughlaqatan bi-sababi l-ghubār.

The windows remained closed because of the dust.

The nonhuman plural النوافذ triggers feminine-singular بقيت and مغلقةً. Arabic agreement here is not copied from English plural windows.

لن تبقى الخدمة متاحة بعد منتصف الليل.

lan tabqā l-khidmatu mutāḥatan baʿda muntaṣafi l-layl.

The service will not remain available after midnight.

لن governs the subjunctive, but final-weak تبقى has an estimated final fatḥa: its spelling and pronunciation still end in . Contrast that with jussive لم يبقَ, where the final weak letter disappears.

بقي + bare imperfect presents the same participant as staying in an ongoing activity or situation:

بقيت سلمى تنتظر اتصال المستشفى حتى نهاية الدوام.

baqiyat salmā tantaẓiru ttiṣāla l-mustashfā ḥattā nihāyati d-dawām.

Salma remained waiting for the hospital's call until the end of the workday.

The imperfect تنتظرُ is indicative and shares its subject with بقيت. Compared with ظلّت تنتظر, بقيت تنتظر more readily suggests that Salma stayed behind or did not leave the waiting situation; ظلّت would foreground the duration itself.

💡
To recognize copular بقي, ask whether the word after the subject describes that subject: القاعة مفتوحة is already a complete present-time description, and بقيت adds persistence.

ظلّ: duration through a time span

ظلّ is common in formal contemporary prose when the duration or sustained character of the situation matters. With an adjective it means “remain”; with a bare imperfect it often translates naturally as “keep doing” or “continue doing.” It is not an English progressive auxiliary that must appear whenever English uses was doing.

ظل الحارس يقظا طوال الليل.

ẓalla l-ḥārisu yaqiẓan ṭawāla l-layl.

The guard remained alert throughout the night.

ظل الباحثان يناقشان النتائج حتى أغلق المختبر.

ẓalla l-bāḥithāni yunāqishāni n-natāʾija ḥattā ʾughliqa l-mukhtabar.

The two researchers kept discussing the results until the laboratory was closed.

In neutral verb-first order, ظلّ is singular before the overt dual subject الباحثان. The following imperfect has the researchers as its understood subject, so it is fully dual يناقشانِ.

الموظفتان ظلتا تعملان على الطلب حتى الظهر.

ʾal-muwaẓẓafatāni ẓallatā taʿmalāni ʿalā ṭ-ṭalabi ḥattā ẓ-ẓuhr.

The two employees continued working on the request until noon. (Both female.)

With the subject first, ظلّتا shows full feminine-dual agreement. The complement تعملانِ is an ungoverned indicative; ظلّ does not insert أنْ and does not make the complement subjunctive.

ظل الأطفال ينتظرون الحافلة رغم تأخرها.

ẓalla l-ʾaṭfālu yantaẓirūna l-ḥāfilata raghma taʾakhkhurihā.

The children kept waiting for the bus despite its delay.

Again, preposed ظلّ is singular, while the complement carries plural agreement. English has one overt subject and an invariant kept; Arabic distributes agreement according to clause structure.

Choosing between بقي and ظلّ

The overlap is real, and there is no rule that makes every context exclusive. The following tendencies are dependable:

Meaning in contextNatural choiceReason
someone stays in a placeبقي في المكانlexical location or remaining behind
an amount is leftبقي شيءresidue after subtraction or change
a resulting state persistsبقي + predicatefocus on the state still holding
an activity lasts through a spanظلّ + imperfectfocus on sustained duration
a condition lasts all day/nightظلّ + predicatethe time span is foregrounded

بقي التقرير ناقصا، وظل الفريق يجمع البيانات طوال الأسبوع.

baqiya t-taqrīru nāqiṣan, wa-ẓalla l-farīqu yajmaʿu l-bayānāti ṭawāla l-ʾusbūʿ.

The report remained incomplete, and the team kept collecting data throughout the week.

This pairing makes the difference visible: بقي evaluates the report's persisting state, while ظلّ opens an extended view of the team's activity.

💡
Choose by viewpoint, not by the English word alone: بقي asks what stayed or was left; ظلّ asks what state or activity held across time.

Common Mistakes

Keeping the weak letter after jussive لم

❌ لم يبقى وقت كاف للمراجعة.

Incorrect — لم requires jussive يبقَ, with deletion of the final weak letter.

✅ لم يبق وقت كاف للمراجعة.

lam yabqa waqtun kāfin li-l-murājaʿa(h).

There was not enough time left for review.

Regularizing the geminate stem

❌ يظلل المكتب مفتوحا حتى المساء.

Incorrect — the indicative of ظلّ is contracted يظلّ, not يظلل.

✅ يظل المكتب مفتوحا حتى المساء.

yaẓallu l-maktabu maftūḥan ḥattā l-masāʾ.

The office remains open until evening.

Losing dual agreement after a fronted subject

❌ المهندستان بقيت مستعدتين للاجتماع.

Incorrect — a subject-first feminine dual requires بقيتا.

✅ المهندستان بقيتا مستعدتين للاجتماع.

ʾal-muhandisatāni baqiyatā mustaʿiddatayni li-l-ijtimāʿ.

The two engineers remained ready for the meeting. (Both female.)

Using full plural agreement in neutral VSO

❌ ظلوا الموظفون ينتظرون التعليمات.

Incorrect in neutral formal-MSA verb-first order — ظلّ is singular before the explicit plural subject.

✅ ظل الموظفون ينتظرون تعليمات المشرف.

ẓalla l-muwaẓẓafūna yantaẓirūna taʿlīmāti l-mushrif.

The employees kept waiting for the supervisor's instructions.

Key Takeaways

  • بقي / يبقى is final-weak; jussive يبقَ deletes the final weak letter.
  • Lexical بقي means “stay” or “remain,” while copular بقي + predicate means “remain in a state.”
  • ظلّ / يظلّ is geminate and commonly presents a state or activity as continuing through time.
  • A bare imperfect after either verb remains indicative unless an independent governor changes its mood.
  • Verb-first agreement is normally singular before an explicit dual or plural subject; the imperfect complement still agrees with its own understood subject.
