Perfect Passive Patterns

The perfect passive presents an event as complete while suppressing its agent. For a sound Form I verb, the core melody is فُعِلَ: active كَتَبَ kataba “wrote” becomes passive كُتِبَ kutiba “was written.” Person, number, and gender endings attach to that passive stem exactly because the form is still a finite verb—not an English-style auxiliary plus participle.

The passive changes vowels, not aspect. كُتِبَ is perfect because the event is presented as bounded or complete; it is passive because the agent is absent and the affected argument is promoted. For the syntax behind that promotion, see the internal-passive overview.

Form I: فُعِلَ

Take كَتَبَ — يَكْتُبُ “write,” root ك-ت-ب, Form I. The 3 m.sg. perfect passive is كُتِبَ. The first radical takes ḍamma, the second takes kasra, and the final -a is the ordinary 3 m.sg. perfect ending.

كتب العقد بعد مفاوضات طويلة.

kutiba l-ʿaqdu baʿda mufāwaḍātin ṭawīla.

The contract was written after lengthy negotiations.

كتبت الرسالة بخط واضح ثم حفظت في الملف.

kutibati r-risālatu bikhaṭṭin wāḍiḥin thumma ḥufiẓat fī l-malaff.

The letter was written in clear handwriting and then kept in the file.

The linking kasra in connected كُتِبَتِ الرسالةُ belongs to pronunciation across the word boundary; the feminine ending itself remains -تْ. English spelling gives no comparable clue, so learn the Arabic perfect ending separately from the passive vowel melody.

💡
To test a sound Form I perfect passive, say the three consonants over u–i–a: ك-ت-ب → كُتِبَ, ف-ت-ح → فُتِحَ, ذ-ك-ر → ذُكِرَ. Then add the ordinary perfect agreement ending.

Derived forms: preserve the derivation, change the melody

Derived forms retain their added consonants, long vowels, or gemination. The passive melody works inside that existing stem. The table gives recognition patterns for sound roots; not every lexical verb actually occurs naturally in a passive because many are intransitive.

FormActive perfectPassive perfectAttested model
IIفَعَّلَفُعِّلَنَظَّمَ → نُظِّمَ
IIIفَاعَلَفُوعِلَنَاقَشَ → نُوقِشَ
IVأَفْعَلَأُفْعِلَأَعْلَنَ → أُعْلِنَ
Vتَفَعَّلَتُفُعِّلَtheoretical sound-root pattern; lexically restricted
VIتَفَاعَلَتُفُوعِلَتَبَادَلَ → تُبُودِلَ
VIIاِنْفَعَلَاُنْفُعِلَpossible pattern, but most Form VII verbs are intransitive
VIIIاِفْتَعَلَاُفْتُعِلَاِعْتَمَدَ → اُعْتُمِدَ
Xاِسْتَفْعَلَاُسْتُفْعِلَاِسْتَخْدَمَ → اُسْتُخْدِمَ

Forms V and VI begin with تُـ in the perfect passive, but their internal melodies differ: تُفُعِّلَ versus تُفُوعِلَ. Forms VII, VIII, and X begin with hamzat al-waṣl. At the start of an utterance their passive supporting vowel is u-; after a preceding vowel that supporting vowel disappears from pronunciation, though the alif remains in spelling.

نظم المؤتمر بالتعاون مع ثلاث جامعات.

nuẓẓima l-muʾtamaru bi-t-taʿāwuni maʿa thalāthi jāmiʿāt.

The conference was organized in cooperation with three universities. (Form II.)

نوقشت الخطة في جلسة مفتوحة.

nūqishati l-khuṭṭatu fī jalsatin maftūḥa.

The plan was discussed in an open session. (Form III.)

أعلنت النتائج على الموقع الرسمي.

ʾuʿlinati n-natāʾiju ʿalā l-mawqiʿi r-rasmiyy.

The results were announced on the official website. (Form IV.)

اعتمدت التوصيات بعد التصويت وأرسلت إلى المجلس.

uʿtumidati t-tawṣiyātu baʿda t-taṣwīti wa-ʾursilat ʾilā l-majlis.

The recommendations were adopted after the vote and sent to the council. (Form VIII.)

استخدمت البيانات لأغراض البحث فقط.

ustukhdimati l-bayānātu li-ʾaghrāḍi l-baḥthi faqaṭ.

The data were used for research purposes only. (Form X.)

Notice that النتائج، التوصيات، البيانات are nonhuman plurals, so each takes feminine singular verbal agreement. The feminine -تْ is independent of the derived Form.

Verb-first and subject-first agreement

In neutral verb-first order, an overt human dual or plural promoted subject normally follows a singular verb, with appropriate gender agreement. With the subject first, full agreement is expected.

دعي الباحثان إلى عرض النتائج.

duʿiya l-bāḥithāni ʾilā ʿarḍi n-natāʾij.

The two male researchers were invited to present the results. (Verb-first: singular masculine.)

الباحثتان دعيتا إلى عرض النتائج.

al-bāḥithatāni duʿiyatā ʾilā ʿarḍi n-natāʾij.

The two female researchers were invited to present the results. (Subject-first: feminine dual.)

كرمت الطالبات في نهاية الحفل.

kurrimati ṭ-ṭālibātu fī nihāyati l-ḥafl.

The female students were honored at the end of the ceremony. (Verb-first: feminine singular.)

Weak roots: learn the surface form, not an imaginary regular stem

Weak and hamzated roots undergo regular historical sound changes that make the surface passive diverge from فُعِلَ.

قيل إن الموعد تغير، لكن لم يصل تأكيد رسمي.

qīla ʾinna l-mawʿida taghayyara, lākin lam yaṣil taʾkīdun rasmiyy.

It was said that the appointment had changed, but no official confirmation arrived.

دعيت الطبيبة إلى الاجتماع ورد طلبها الأول.

duʿiyati ṭ-ṭabībatu ʾilā l-ijtimāʿi wa-rudda ṭalabuhā l-ʾawwal.

The female doctor was invited to the meeting, and her first request was rejected.

💡
For a weak verb, memorize the passive as a principal part: قال–قِيل, باع–بِيع, دعا–دُعِي, رمى–رُمِي. Writing an expected but nonexistent regular form is not a harmless pronunciation slip; it creates a form Arabic does not use.

Common Mistakes

Using the active perfect with a passive translation

❌ كتب التقرير صباحا.

Incorrect for ‘the report was written’ if read kataba; the passive reading is كُتِبَ kutiba.

✅ كتب التقرير صباحا وروجع بعد الظهر.

kutiba t-taqrīru ṣabāḥan wa-rūjiʿa baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.

The report was written in the morning and reviewed in the afternoon.

Flattening every derived form to فُعِلَ

❌ نظم المؤتمر في القاعة الكبرى.

nuẓima l-muʾtamaru fī l-qāʿati l-kubrā

Incorrect pronunciation—the Form II passive preserves the doubled middle radical: نُظِّمَ nuẓẓima, not nuẓima.

✅ نظم المؤتمر هذا العام في القاعة الكبرى.

nuẓẓima l-muʾtamaru hādhā l-ʿāma fī l-qāʿati l-kubrā.

The conference was organized in the large hall this year.

Regularizing a hollow passive

❌ قول إن الطريق مغلق.

Incorrect passive form—قال has the perfect passive قِيلَ, not an invented regularized form.

✅ قيل إن الطريق مغلق بسبب الثلوج.

qīla ʾinna ṭ-ṭarīqa mughlaqun bisababi th-thulūj.

It was said that the road was closed because of the snow.

Losing feminine agreement before a feminine subject

❌ كتب الرسالة بخط واضح.

Incorrect passive agreement—رسالة is feminine, so a preceding perfect passive is كُتِبَتْ.

✅ كتبت الرسالة بخط واضح.

kutibati r-risālatu bikhaṭṭin wāḍiḥ.

The letter was written in clear handwriting.

Giving a preceding verb full dual agreement

❌ دعيا الباحثان إلى المنصة.

Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—the verb preceding an overt dual subject is singular.

✅ دعي الباحثان إلى المنصة لعرض النتائج.

duʿiya l-bāḥithāni ʾilā l-minaṣṣati liʿarḍi n-natāʾij.

The two researchers were invited to the platform to present the results.

Key Takeaways

  • Sound Form I uses فُعِلَ; add the ordinary perfect agreement endings to that passive stem.
  • Derived forms preserve their derivational structure: نُظِّمَ، نُوقِشَ، أُعْلِنَ، اُعْتُمِدَ، اُسْتُخْدِمَ.
  • Verb-first human duals and plurals normally follow a singular verb; subject-first human arguments receive full agreement, while nonhuman plurals take feminine singular.
  • Hollow, final-weak, hamzated, and geminate passives must be learned in their actual surface forms: قِيلَ، دُعِيَ، قُرِئَ، رُدَّ.
