Imperfect يكون is a real Arabic verb, but it is not the default equivalent of English present is. Arabic normally says المكتب هادئ الآن “The office is quiet now,” with no overt copula. يكون appears when an imperfect environment is independently needed: future سيكون, a repeated or generic relationship, or a subordinate frame such as عندما يكون and أن يكون.
The lexical verb is hollow Form I كَانَ — يَكُونُ — كَوْنًا, root ك-و-ن. As in the perfect, its subject is nominative and an overt nominal or adjectival predicate is accusative. The imperfect also participates in indicative, subjunctive, and jussive mood.
The core imperfect agreement forms
The long ū of يكون belongs to the indicative and subjunctive stem, but the hollow jussive shortens to يكنْ in singular forms. Dual and masculine-plural “five verb” forms lose mood nūn after a subjunctive or jussive governor.
| Subject | Indicative form | Basic meaning in context |
|---|---|---|
| هو | يَكُونُ | he/it is, will be, or occurs as |
| هي | تَكُونُ | she/it is, will be, or occurs as |
| هما، masculine / feminine | يَكُونَانِ / تَكُونَانِ | the two are/will be |
| هم / هن | يَكُونُونَ / يَكُنَّ | they are/will be |
| أنت / أنتما / أنتم | تَكُونُ / تَكُونَانِ / تَكُونُونَ | you are/will be |
| أنا / نحن | أَكُونُ / نَكُونُ | I am/will be; we are/will be |
The surrounding frame supplies the time and discourse meaning. Bare يكونُ by itself does not mean one fixed English tense.
Future states with سـ and سوف
Prefix سـ or separate سوف gives the imperfect a clear future frame. The subject remains nominative and an overt adjective remains accusative.
سيكون الطبيب متاحا بعد الظهر.
sayakūnu ṭ-ṭabību mutāḥan baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr.
The doctor will be available in the afternoon.
ستكون القاعة جاهزة قبل وصول الضيوف.
satakūnu l-qāʿatu jāhizatan qabla wuṣūli ḍ-ḍuyūf.
The hall will be ready before the guests arrive.
سوف نكون في المكتب حتى الساعة الخامسة.
sawfa nakūnu fī l-maktabi ḥattā s-sāʿati l-khāmisa(h).
We will be in the office until five o'clock.
English uses will be; Arabic future marking attaches to the verified imperfect stem يكون, not to perfect كان.
Habitual relationships
Imperfect يكون can present a state as recurring under particular conditions. This is different from a neutral state true at the speech moment.
يكون الطريق مزدحما عادة في صباح الأحد.
yakūnu ṭ-ṭarīqu muzdahiman ʿādatan fī ṣabāḥi l-ʾaḥad.
The road is usually congested on Sunday mornings.
تكون المكتبة أكثر هدوءا بعد انتهاء المحاضرات.
takūnu l-maktabatu ʾakthara hudūʾan baʿda ntihāʾi l-muḥāḍarāt.
The library is usually quieter after lectures end.
The adverbs and recurring time frames make the habitual reading explicit. For one immediate observation, prefer zero copula: الطريق مزدحم الآن “The road is congested now.”
Generic and conditional frames
Formal explanatory and academic prose uses يكون to state how a condition regularly maps to a result. The construction presents instances of a general relation rather than merely labeling one entity now.
يكون الماء صلبا عندما تنخفض حرارته دون درجة التجمد.
yakūnu l-māʾu ṣulban ʿindamā tankhafiḍu ḥarāratuhu dūna darajati t-tajammud.
Water is solid when its temperature falls below the freezing point. (General relation.)
عندما يكون الضغط منخفضا، يعمل الجهاز بكفاءة أقل.
ʿindamā yakūnu ḍ-ḍaghṭu munkhafiḍan, yaʿmalu l-jihāzu bi-kafāʾatin ʾaqall.
When the pressure is low, the device operates less efficiently.
عندما supplies a subordinate time/condition frame; it does not itself change يكونُ from indicative here. English may use simple present in both clauses, but Arabic has chosen an overt imperfect copula because the clause describes a condition under which another result holds.
Subordinate يكون after a governor
Subordinate environments can select a mood. أن and لن govern the subjunctive يكونَ. لم governs hollow jussive يكنْ.
| Environment | Form | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| ungoverned | يَكُونُ | indicative |
| أَنْ يَكُونَ | يَكُونَ | subjunctive; final u becomes a |
| لَنْ يَكُونَ | يَكُونَ | subjunctive future negation |
| لَمْ يَكُنْ | يَكُنْ | jussive; hollow long vowel is lost |
نريد أن يكون التقرير مختصرا وواضحا.
nurīdu ʾan yakūna t-taqrīru mukhtaṣaran wa-wāḍiḥan.
We want the report to be concise and clear.
لن يكون المدير في المكتب غدا.
lan yakūna l-mudīru fī l-maktabi ghadan.
The director will not be in the office tomorrow.
لم يكن الاجتماع طويلا كما توقعنا.
lam yakuni l-ijtimāʿu ṭawīlan kamā tawaqqaʿnā.
The meeting was not as long as we expected.
The linking i in يكنِ الاجتماع appears only in connected pronunciation before the article; the underlying jussive is يكنْ.
Agreement, VSO, and nonhuman plurals
With a subject first, imperfect يكون shows full agreement. In neutral verb-first order before an overt human dual or plural, it normally remains singular. A nonhuman plural normally controls feminine-singular agreement.
الطالبتان ستكونان مسؤولتين عن استقبال الزوار.
aṭ-ṭālibatāni satakūnāni masʾūlatayni ʿani stiqbāli z-zuwwār.
The two female students will be responsible for receiving visitors.
سيكون المشاركون مستعدين عند بدء البث.
sayakūnu l-mushārikūna mustaʿiddīna ʿinda badʾi l-bathth.
The participants will be ready when the broadcast begins. (Verb first.)
المشاركون سيكونون مستعدين عند بدء البث.
al-mushārikūna sayakūnūna mustaʿiddīna ʿinda badʾi l-bathth.
The participants will be ready when the broadcast begins. (Subject first.)
ستكون النتائج واضحة بعد تحليل البيانات.
satakūnu n-natāʾiju wāḍiḥatan baʿda taḥlīli l-bayānāt.
The results will be clear after the data is analyzed.
Although النتائج is plural, it is nonhuman, so both ستكون and واضحة are feminine singular.
كان + another imperfect is a different composition
Imperfect يكون by itself describes the state expressed by its own predicate. In كان يكتب, perfect كان locates another imperfect event in the past, producing an ongoing or habitual reading. That two-verb composition is developed on كان + Imperfect; do not treat every occurrence of يكون as part of it.
Common Mistakes
Copying English present “is” into Arabic
❌ المكتب يكون هادئا الآن.
Incorrect as a neutral present observation — use the zero copula.
✅ المكتب هادئ الآن، لكن الطريق مزدحم.
al-maktabu hādiʾun l-ʾāna, lakinna ṭ-ṭarīqa muzdahim.
The office is quiet now, but the road is congested.
Using past كان for a future state
❌ كان المؤتمر في العاصمة غدا.
Incorrect for a future event — mark future يكون.
✅ سيكون المؤتمر في العاصمة الشهر المقبل.
sayakūnu l-muʾtamaru fī l-ʿāṣimati sh-shahra l-muqbil.
The conference will be in the capital next month.
Losing feminine dual agreement after a fronted subject
❌ الطالبتان سيكون مسؤولا عن الاستقبال.
Incorrect — subject-first feminine dual requires ستكونان and مسؤولتين.
✅ الطالبتان ستكونان مسؤولتين عن الاستقبال.
aṭ-ṭālibatāni satakūnāni masʾūlatayni ʿani l-istiqbāl.
The two female students will be responsible for reception.
Giving a verb-first form full plural agreement
❌ سيكونون الموظفون في القاعة عند الثامنة.
Incorrect as neutral VSO — use singular سيكون before the overt plural subject.
✅ سيكون الموظفون في القاعة قبل الثامنة.
sayakūnu l-muwaẓẓafūna fī l-qāʿati qabla th-thāmina(h).
The employees will be in the hall before eight.
Keeping the hollow long vowel after لم
❌ لم يكون الطريق مفتوحا صباحا.
Incorrect — لم governs the jussive, and singular يكون shortens to يكن.
✅ لم يكن الطريق مفتوحا بسبب أعمال الصيانة.
lam yakuni ṭ-ṭarīqu maftūḥan bi-sababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna(h).
The road was not open because of maintenance work.
Key Takeaways
- يكون is the imperfect of hollow Form I كان, not a default present translation of English is.
- Future سيكون/سوف يكون, recurring relationships, generic conditions, and subordinate clauses provide genuine environments for the imperfect copula.
- أن and لن govern subjunctive يكونَ; لم governs shortened jussive يكنْ.
- The subject remains nominative and an overt nominal or adjectival predicate remains accusative.
- Full agreement follows a fronted subject; neutral verb-first order and nonhuman plurals follow the usual formal-MSA agreement rules.
