The core contrast is viewpoint: كان + imperfect presents an activity as recurring or as background within a past period, while a simple perfect normally presents an event or series as bounded. Compare كان جدي يمشي إلى السوق كل صباح “My grandfather used to walk to the market every morning” with مشى جدي إلى السوق صباح أمس “My grandfather walked to the market yesterday morning.”
English may translate a past habit with used to, would, or a simple past. Arabic does not choose the construction by matching that English tense. It asks whether the speaker is opening a past frame and looking at a pattern inside it, or reporting a completed occurrence as a whole.
The verb-system overview introduces the perfect and imperfect forms themselves; this page focuses on the choice between their competing past viewpoints.
The construction builds a recurring past frame
Perfect كَانَ — يَكُونُ — كَوْنًا, root ك-و-ن, places the frame in the past. The embedded imperfect presents the lexical activity as unbounded inside that frame.
كان جدي يمشي إلى السوق كل صباح.
kāna jaddī yamshī ʾilā s-sūqi kulla ṣabāḥ.
My grandfather used to walk to the market every morning.
كانت ريم تستمع إلى الأخبار في طريقها إلى العمل.
kānat rīmu tastamiʿu ʾilā l-ʾakhbāri fī ṭarīqihā ʾilā l-ʿamal.
Reem used to listen to the news on her way to work.
Words such as كل صباح, عادة, دائما, and كلما make repetition explicit. Sometimes the wider discourse supplies the repeated period without an adverb in the same sentence.
عندما كنا نعيش قرب الجامعة، كنا نتناول الغداء في ذلك المطعم.
ʿindamā kunnā naʿīshu qurba l-jāmiʿati, kunnā natanāwalu l-ghadāʾa fī dhālika l-maṭʿam.
When we lived near the university, we used to have lunch at that restaurant.
The first clause supplies a past life-stage. The second imperfect is naturally habitual even without “every day.” Context, not an obligatory habitual marker, creates the pattern.
The simple perfect packages a bounded event
A simple perfect presents an event from the outside as a whole. A definite occasion such as أمس, مرة واحدة, or a completed sequence often makes that viewpoint natural.
مشى جدي إلى السوق صباح أمس وعاد قبل الظهر.
mashā jaddī ʾilā s-sūqi ṣabāḥa ʾamsi wa-ʿāda qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.
My grandfather walked to the market yesterday morning and returned before noon.
اتصلت ريم بالمصرف مرة واحدة ثم أرسلت الوثائق.
ʾittaṣalat rīmu bi-l-maṣrifi marratan wāḥidatan thumma ʾarsalati l-wathāʾiq.
Reem called the bank once and then sent the documents.
The perfect can also describe repeated events when the series itself is counted or closed. Repetition does not automatically require كان.
زارتنا مريم ثلاث مرات العام الماضي.
zāratnā maryamu thalātha marrātini l-ʿāma l-māḍī.
Maryam visited us three times last year.
كانت مريم تزورنا كل أسبوع خلال الصيف.
kānat maryamu tazūrunā kulla ʾusbūʿin khilāla ṣ-ṣayf.
Maryam used to visit us every week during the summer.
ثلاث مرات العام الماضي closes and counts the complete series, so the perfect is natural. كل أسبوع خلال الصيف invites the listener to view a recurring schedule from within that period.
Duration alone does not decide
English speakers often assume that a long event requires كان + imperfect. It does not. A completed tenure can be packaged as one bounded whole, whereas the same work can be background to another past event.
عمل سامر في الشركة عشر سنوات ثم انتقل إلى مسقط.
ʿamila sāmirun fī sh-sharikati ʿashra sanawātin thumma ntaqala ʾilā masqaṭ.
Samer worked at the company for ten years and then moved to Muscat.
كان سامر يعمل في الشركة عندما تعرفت إليه.
kāna sāmirun yaʿmalu fī sh-sharikati ʿindamā taʿarraftu ʾilayh.
Samer was working at the company when I met him.
The first sentence supplies an endpoint with ثم انتقل. The second uses the job as background and makes no claim about when it began or ended.
A practical decision table
| Intended view | Typical cue | Likely choice |
|---|---|---|
| recurring pattern inside a former period | كل يوم، عادة، كلما | كان + imperfect |
| background around another event | عندما، بينما | كان + imperfect |
| one whole occurrence | أمس، مرة واحدة، ثم | simple perfect |
| closed or counted series | ثلاث مرات، من عام… إلى عام… | often simple perfect |
There is genuine flexibility at the edges. A speaker may choose the perfect to advance a narrative through successive habits, or كان + imperfect to dwell on a repeated pattern. The forms encode viewpoint, not a mechanical list of time expressions.
Agreement must be checked twice
With a subject first, both كان and the embedded imperfect show full agreement.
الباحثتان كانتا تجتمعان صباح الاثنين لمراجعة البيانات.
al-bāḥithatāni kānatā tajtamiʿāni ṣabāḥa l-ithnayni li-murājaʿati l-bayānāt.
The two female researchers used to meet on Monday mornings to review the data.
In neutral verb-first order, outer كان is normally singular before an overt human plural. The embedded verb is plural because its understood subject refers back to the preceding plural noun.
كان الباحثون يجتمعون بعد كل تجربة لمناقشة النتائج.
kāna l-bāḥithūna yajtamiʿūna baʿda kulli tajribatin li-munāqashati n-natāʾij.
The researchers used to meet after every experiment to discuss the results. (Verb first.)
Nonhuman plurals normally take feminine-singular agreement in both layers.
كانت الأجهزة تتوقف كل مساء عند ارتفاع الحرارة.
kānati l-ʾajhizatu tatawaqqafu kulla masāʾin ʿinda rtifāʿi l-ḥarāra(h).
The devices used to stop every evening when the temperature rose.
The embedded imperfect remains indicative unless its own governor appears. كان supplies past time but does not govern mood: كانوا يكتبونَ, not ungoverned يكتبوا.
Weak and geminate verbs keep their imperfect stems
Hollow Form I قَالَ — يَقُولُ — قَوْلًا, root ق-و-ل, gives habitual كان يقول. Geminate Form I رَدَّ — يَرُدُّ — رَدًّا, root ر-د-د, gives كان يردّ.
كان المدير يقول إن القرار مؤقت، لكنه لم يحدد موعدا جديدا.
kāna l-mudīru yaqūlu ʾinna l-qarāra muʾaqqatun, lākinnahu lam yuḥaddid mawʿidan jadīdā.
The director used to say that the decision was temporary, but he did not set a new date.
كان موظف الدعم يرد على الرسائل خلال ساعة.
kāna muwaẓẓafu d-daʿmi yaruddu ʿalā r-rasāʾili khilāla sāʿa(h).
The support agent used to reply to messages within an hour.
The past frame does not license invented forms such as يقولل or يردد for these Form I verbs. Learn their principal parts as lexical units.
Common Mistakes
Using a bare perfect for an intended open habit
❌ قرأ أبي الصحيفة كل صباح في طفولتي.
Awkward for the intended open habitual background — the bare perfect packages the reading as a completed whole.
✅ كان أبي يقرأ الصحيفة كل صباح عندما كنت طفلا.
kāna ʾabī yaqraʾu ṣ-ṣaḥīfata kulla ṣabāḥin ʿindamā kuntu ṭiflā.
My father used to read the newspaper every morning when I was a child.
Using كان for a counted completed series
❌ كانت مريم تزورنا ثلاث مرات العام الماضي.
Poor choice for a series explicitly counted as three completed visits; it presents an open habit instead.
✅ زارتنا مريم ثلاث مرات خلال العام الماضي.
zāratnā maryamu thalātha marrātin khilāla l-ʿāmi l-māḍī.
Maryam visited us three times during the past year.
Losing feminine-dual agreement
❌ الطبيبتان كان يفحصان المرضى كل صباح.
Incorrect — a subject-first feminine dual requires كانتا and تفحصان.
✅ الطبيبتان كانتا تفحصان المرضى قبل بدء العيادة.
aṭ-ṭabībatāni kānatā tafḥaṣāni l-marḍā qabla badʾi l-ʿiyāda(h).
The two female doctors used to examine patients before the clinic opened.
Giving outer كان full plural agreement in neutral verb-first order
❌ كانوا الحراس يتفقدون الأبواب كل ساعة.
Incorrect as neutral verb-first order — use singular كان before the overt human plural subject.
✅ كان الحراس يتفقدون الأبواب كل ساعة طوال الليل.
kāna l-ḥurrāsu yatafaqqadūna l-ʾabwāba kulla sāʿatin ṭawāla l-layl.
The guards used to check the doors every hour throughout the night.
Treating كان as a mood governor
❌ الطلاب كانوا يراجعوا ملاحظاتهم بعد الدرس.
Incorrect — ungoverned يراجعون remains indicative after كانوا, with its mood nūn intact.
✅ الطلاب كانوا يراجعون ملاحظاتهم بعد كل درس.
aṭ-ṭullābu kānū yurājiʿūna mulāḥaẓātihim baʿda kulli dars.
The students used to review their notes after every lesson.
Key Takeaways
- كان + imperfect opens a past frame and presents an activity as recurring or backgrounded inside it.
- The simple perfect presents one event, a completed sequence, or a closed and counted series as a whole.
- Duration does not determine the choice; viewpoint and boundedness do.
- Agreement applies separately to كان and the embedded imperfect, and كان does not govern mood.
- Weak and geminate verbs retain their verified imperfect stems.
