The particle فـ often means “so,” “then,” or “and as a result.” In one formal construction, traditionally called فاء السببية, it follows a negative or request-like clause and introduces a resulting event: راجعْ الأرقام فتكتشفَ الخطأ “Review the figures, and as a result you will discover the error.” The result imperfect is subjunctive.
The فـ itself has no lexical root or verb Form. Traditional analysis says that an obligatory but unspoken أنْ follows it: فـ + [أنْ] + imperfect subjunctive. This accounts for final -a in a sound singular and nūn deletion in the five verbs. Meaning and licensing both matter: an ordinary coordinating فـ after a positive statement does not automatically trigger the subjunctive.
For the general ending system, consult the subjunctive imperfect. This page makes the special result construction usable on its own.
Two conditions: a licensing clause and a result
Subjunctive result فـ requires both of the following:
- The preceding clause is a genuine negation or a genuine request-like expression: command, prohibition, question, wish, and related categories such as exhortation or hope.
- The event after فـ follows as a consequence or intended result, not merely as the next coordinated fact.
| Licensing context | Frame | Typical force |
|---|---|---|
| command | اِفْعَلْ فَتَنْجَحَ | do X, with Y as its result |
| prohibition | لَا تَفْعَلْ فَتَنْدَمَ | do not do X and thereby incur Y |
| negation | لَمْ يَحْدُثْ فَنَضْطَرَّ | X did not happen, so the occasion for Y did not arise |
| question | هَلْ تَفْعَلُ فَأَسْتَفِيدَ؟ | will X occur, enabling Y? |
| wish | لَيْتَ ... فَنَجِدَ | if only X, so that Y could follow |
This construction is (formal) and especially visible in careful writing, speeches, maxims, and rhetorical questions. Contemporary prose can often paraphrase it with وبذلك, حتى, or an explicit purpose/result clause, but the governed form remains productive and important for reading.
After a command or prohibition
An imperative can supply the request, and the subjunctive presents the hoped-for consequence.
راجع الأرقام فتكتشف الخطأ قبل إرسال التقرير.
rājiʿi l-ʾarqāma fa-taktashifa l-khaṭaʾa qabla ʾirsāli t-taqrīr.
Review the figures, and you will consequently discover the error before sending the report. (Addressing one man; formal.)
Underlying imperative راجعْ takes a support i before the article. Result فتكتشفَ is a sound singular subjunctive with audible final -a.
تعاونا فتنجحا في إنهاء المشروع قبل الموعد.
taʿāwanā fa-tanjaḥā fī ʾinhāʾi l-mashrūʿi qabla l-mawʿid.
Work together, and as a result you two will succeed in finishing the project before the deadline.
Dual تنجحانِ loses nūn in the subjunctive: فتنجحا. The remaining alif marks dual agreement.
لا تهملوا النسخ الاحتياطية فتفقدوا ملفات العمل.
lā tuhmilū n-nusakha l-iḥtiyāṭiyyata fa-tafqidū malafāti l-ʿamal.
Do not neglect the backups and thereby lose the work files. (Addressing a masculine or mixed group.)
The first verb is jussive after prohibitive لا; the result is subjunctive after causative فـ. Both masculine-plural forms lack nūn, but for different syntactic reasons.
لا تستفز المتحدث فيرد على السؤال بغضب.
lā tastafizza l-mutaḥadditha fa-yarudda ʿalā s-suʾāli bi-ghaḍab.
Do not provoke the speaker and thereby cause him to answer the question angrily. (Addressing one man.)
Geminate رَدَّ / يَرُدُّ, root ر د د, has contracted subjunctive يردَّ. The result construction does not regularize it to an invented sound stem.
After negation
A genuine negative clause can license the construction when the second event is understood as a consequence that therefore did not arise.
لم تتأخر الموافقة فنضطر إلى إلغاء الموعد.
lam tataʾakhkhari l-muwāfaqatu fa-naḍṭarra ʾilā ʾilghāʾi l-mawʿid.
The approval was not delayed, so we did not have to cancel the appointment.
Jussive تتأخرْ receives a connected support vowel before the article. The consequence فنضطرَّ is subjunctive; its geminate root ض ر ر appears in Form VIII اِضْطَرَّ / يَضْطَرُّ.
ما قصرت المهندسة فنحملها مسؤولية العطل.
mā qaṣṣarati l-muhandisatu fa-nuḥammilahā masʾūliyyata l-ʿuṭl.
The engineer did not fall short, so we have no cause to hold her responsible for the malfunction.
The negation must be semantically intact. If an exception or another element reverses it, the neat licensing relation may disappear. This is one reason to learn the construction as a clause pattern, not as “every فـ after a negative word.”
After a question or wish
Interrogatives license the subjunctive when the question asks about an action that would enable the result.
هل تسمحون لي فأعرض البديل على اللجنة؟
hal tasmaḥūna lī fa-ʾaʿriḍa l-badīla ʿalā l-lajna(h)?
Will you permit me so that I may present the alternative to the committee? (Addressing a masculine or mixed group; formal.)
The licensing verb تسمحونَ is an ordinary indicative inside the question. Only result فأعرضَ is subjunctive.
أين ألقاك فأسلمك الوثائق الأصلية؟
ʾayna ʾalqāka fa-ʾusallimaka l-wathāʾiqa l-ʾaṣliyya(h)?
Where can I meet you so that I can hand you the original documents? (Addressing one man.)
A wish creates a nonasserted setting whose realization would produce the result:
ليت الفريق يراجع الخطة فنجد حلا قبل التصويت.
layta l-farīqa yurājiʿu l-khuṭṭata fa-najida ḥallan qabla t-taṣwīt.
If only the team would review the plan, so that we might find a solution before the vote.
The predicate of ليت is indicative يراجعُ; result فنجدَ has final subjunctive -a.
Ordinary فـ does not always govern
After an affirmative assertion, فـ can simply coordinate a following fact. That imperfect remains indicative.
يعمل الفريق ببطء فيتأخر التسليم كل شهر.
yaʿmalu l-farīqu bi-buṭʾin fa-yataʾakhkharu t-taslīmu kulla shahr.
The team works slowly, so delivery is delayed every month. (Indicative factual pattern.)
The clause is a positive factual assertion, not the response to negation or a request. Therefore فيتأخرُ is indicative despite its causal interpretation in the broad semantic sense.
وصلت المديرة فبدأ الاجتماع بعد دقائق.
waṣalati l-mudīratu fa-badaʾa l-ijtimāʿu baʿda daqāʾiq.
The director arrived, and the meeting began a few minutes later.
Both verbs are perfect. No imperfect follows فـ, so mood government is not even at issue.
Weak-final verbs remain subjunctive, not jussive
Form I دَعَا / يَدْعُو, root د ع و, keeps its final wāw in the subjunctive and pronounces a final fatḥa on it: يدعوَ. Only a jussive such as لم يدعُ deletes it.
ساعد المنظم فيدعوك إلى الجلسة المقبلة.
sāʿidi l-munaẓẓima fa-yadʿuwaka ʾilā l-jalsati l-muqbila(h).
Help the organizer, and as a result he will invite you to the next session. (Addressing one man.)
The pronounced sequence -uwa- in يدعوَك identifies the retained weak letter plus subjunctive ending.
Common Mistakes
Pronouncing a licensed result as indicative
❌ راجع الجدول فتكتشف الفرق.
rājiʿi l-jadwala fa-taktashifu l-farq
Incorrect pronunciation — the command licenses result فتكتشفَ with final -a.
✅ راجع الجدول فتكتشف الفرق بين النسختين.
rājiʿi l-jadwala fa-taktashifa l-farqa bayna n-nuskhatayn.
Review the table, and you will discover the difference between the two versions.
Using subjunctive after ordinary positive coordination
❌ تعمل الشركة بانتظام فتسلم الطلبات في موعدها.
taʿmalu sh-sharikatu bi-ntiẓāmin fa-tusallima ṭ-ṭalabāt
Incorrect pronunciation for a factual habitual statement — ordinary coordination requires indicative فتسلّمُ.
✅ تعمل الشركة بانتظام فتسلم الطلبات في موعدها كل أسبوع.
taʿmalu sh-sharikatu bi-ntiẓāmin fa-tusallimu ṭ-ṭalabāti fī mawʿidihā kulla ʾusbūʿ.
The company works systematically and therefore delivers the orders on time every week.
Retaining nūn in a dual result
❌ تعاونا فتنجحان في المهمة.
Incorrect — dual result تنجحان loses nūn after causative فـ.
✅ تعاونا فتنجحا في المهمة من المحاولة الأولى.
taʿāwanā fa-tanjaḥā fī l-muhimmati mina l-muḥāwalati l-ʾūlā.
Work together, and you two will succeed at the task on the first attempt.
Deleting a weak letter as though the result were jussive
❌ ساعد المدير فيدعك إلى الاجتماع.
Incorrect for the intended result of دعا / يدعو — subjunctive فيدعوَك retains wāw.
✅ ساعد المدير فيدعوك إلى اجتماع التخطيط.
sāʿidi l-mudīra fa-yadʿuwaka ʾilā jtimāʿi t-takhṭīṭ.
Help the director, and as a result he will invite you to the planning meeting. (Addressing one man.)
Key Takeaways
- فاء السببية follows genuine negation or a request-like clause and presents the next event as its result.
- Traditional analysis supplies an implicit أنْ, so the following imperfect is subjunctive.
- Sound singulars take -a, the five verbs delete nūn, and final weak و/ي normally remains.
- Ordinary coordinating فـ after a positive assertion does not trigger this rule.
- Command, prohibition, negation, question, and wish all license the pattern when the result meaning is real.
