Maṣdar plus Iḍāfa Arguments

A maṣdar can turn a whole event into a noun phrase without making the event's participants disappear. In مراجعة اللجنة للخطة “the committee's review of the plan,” مراجعة is grammatically a noun, اللجنة is genitive as the second term of an iḍāfa, and الخطة is still understood as the thing reviewed. This double nature—noun on the outside, event on the inside—is the key to reading dense formal Arabic.

English often hides the same roles behind of and a possessive: “the committee's review of the plan.” Arabic can be more compact, but compactness creates ambiguity. Case, lexical meaning, retained objects, and clear paraphrases work together to show who did what to whom.

Start with the right maṣdar

The syntax cannot rescue an invented noun. Form I maṣdars are lexical and must be learned with the verb; derived-form maṣdars are more predictable, although weak roots undergo regular contractions.

راجعت اللجنة الخطة أمس.

rājaʿati l-lajnatu l-khuṭṭata ʾams.

The committee reviewed the plan yesterday. (Finite clause.)

استغرقت مراجعة اللجنة للخطة ساعتين.

istaghraqat murājaʿatu l-lajnati lil-khuṭṭati sāʿatayn.

The committee's review of the plan took two hours. (Nominalized event.)

The first sentence marks past time on راجعت. The maṣdar in the second has no tense of its own; استغرقت and the context locate the review in time.

The following genitive may be the doer

With an intransitive event, the genitive after the maṣdar normally represents the underlying subject. وصول الوفد means that the delegation arrived; انسحاب الشركة means that the company withdrew.

أخر وصول الوفد افتتاح الجلسة.

ʾakhkhara wuṣūlu l-wafdi iftitāḥa l-jalsa.

The delegation's arrival delayed the opening of the session. (Formal.)

فاجأ انسحاب الشركة المستثمرين.

fājaʾa nsiḥābu sh-sharikati l-mustathmirīn.

The company's withdrawal surprised the investors. (Formal.)

With a transitive maṣdar, the first genitive can also be the doer: مراجعة اللجنة “the committee's reviewing.” A following object may remain accusative in fully inflected formal syntax.

شدد التقرير على ضرورة حماية البلدية المباني التاريخية.

shaddada t-taqrīru ʿalā ḍarūrati ḥimāyati l-baladiyyati l-mabāniya t-tārīkhiyya.

The report stressed the need for the municipality to protect the historic buildings. (Formal; البلدية is the genitive agent and المباني the accusative object.)

That direct accusative is clearest when endings are read and the context is controlled. Contemporary expository prose very often marks the patient with لـ instead: حماية الحكومة للمواقع. The prepositional form reduces processing effort without changing the basic roles.

أوصى الخبراء بتوسيع حماية الحكومة للمواقع الأثرية.

ʾawṣā l-khubarāʾu bitawsīʿi ḥimāyati l-ḥukūmati lil-mawāqiʿi l-ʾathariyya.

The experts recommended expanding the government's protection of the archaeological sites. (Formal.)

💡
When a transitive maṣdar has two participants, ask two separate questions: who performs the event, and what is affected? In clear modern prose, maṣdar + agent in iḍāfa + لـ + patient is often the safest answer.

The genitive may instead be the patient

If no agent is expressed, the genitive can name the affected entity. تنفيذ الخطة normally means “implementation of the plan,” not “the plan's implementing something.” Likewise, بناء الجسر is “construction of the bridge.” Semantics makes these readings natural, but grammar alone does not label a genitive “subject” or “object.”

بدأ تنفيذ الخطة في مطلع العام.

badaʾa tanfīdhu l-khuṭṭati fī maṭlaʿi l-ʿām.

Implementation of the plan began at the start of the year. (الخطة is the patient.)

تمول المؤسسة بناء المدرسة الجديدة.

tumawwilu l-muʾassasatu bināʾa l-madrasati l-jadīda.

The foundation is funding construction of the new school. (Definite patient inside the iḍāfa.)

A phrase can therefore be genuinely ambiguous. تصوير الصحفي can mean “the journalist's photographing” or “the photographing of the journalist.” Do not pretend that word order supplies a universal answer. Add an overt participant or recast the phrase.

أثار تصوير الصحفي جدلا واسعا.

ʾathāra taṣwīru ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyi jadalan wāsiʿā.

The journalist's photographing / the photographing of the journalist caused broad controversy. (Ambiguous without context.)

أثار تصوير الشرطة للصحفي جدلا واسعا.

ʾathāra taṣwīru sh-shurṭati liṣ-ṣaḥafiyyi jadalan wāsiʿā.

The police's photographing of the journalist caused broad controversy. (Roles made explicit.)

For a passive interpretation, formal prose can also use من قبل: تصوير الصحفي من قبل الشرطة “the journalist's being photographed by the police.” It is heavier but unambiguous.

Possessive suffixes inherit the same ambiguity

A suffix attached to a maṣdar is genitive in function. It may express the agent, as in وصوله “his arrival,” or the patient, as in استدعاؤه “his being summoned / summoning him.” Context often resolves the reading, but a suffix does not itself encode “doer.”

أبلغناهم بوصوله مساء أمس.

ʾablaghnāhum biwuṣūlihi masāʾa ʾams.

We informed them of his arrival yesterday evening. (The suffix is the underlying subject.)

جاء استدعاؤه من قبل المحكمة مفاجئا.

jāʾa stidʿāʾuhu min qibali l-maḥkamati mufājiʾā.

His being summoned by the court came as a surprise. (The suffix is the patient; the agent is explicit.)

Definiteness, case, and adjective placement

The first term of an iḍāfa takes neither الـ nor tanwīn. The whole phrase becomes definite when its final genitive is definite: مراجعة لجنة “a committee's review,” but مراجعة اللجنة “the committee's review.” An adjective describing the maṣdar comes after the complete iḍāfa and matches the maṣdar in gender, number, case, and definiteness.

نحتاج إلى مراجعة لجنة مستقلة للتقرير.

naḥtāju ʾilā murājaʿati lajnatin mustaqillatin lit-taqrīr.

We need a review of the report by an independent committee. (لجنة مستقلة is indefinite.)

كانت مراجعة اللجنة الشاملة مفيدة للوزارة.

kānat murājaʿatu l-lajnati sh-shāmilatu mufīdatan lil-wizāra.

The committee's comprehensive review was useful to the ministry. (الشاملة modifies feminine مراجعة.)

Compare مراجعة اللجنة الشاملة with مراجعة اللجنة الشاملةِ in fully inflected prose: nominative الشاملةُ describes the nominative maṣdar, while genitive الشاملةِ would describe اللجنة. Unvocalized spelling hides this contrast, so rewrite when context does not make the attachment obvious.

💡
Adjective placement does not erase agreement. Put the adjective after the entire iḍāfa, then make it agree with the noun it truly modifies—not automatically with the nearest noun.

Aspect still comes from context

An iḍāfa tells you participant relations, not time or completion. تنفيذ الوزارة للخطة can refer to past, current, habitual, or projected implementation. Words such as بعد، أثناء، المتوقع and the surrounding finite verb supply aspect.

بعد إكمال الوزارة تنفيذ الخطة، ستنشر تقييما مستقلا.

baʿda ʾikmāli l-wizārati tanfīdha l-khuṭṭati, satanshuru taqyīman mustaqillā.

After the ministry completes implementation of the plan, it will publish an independent evaluation. (Formal; completion comes from إكمال and بعد.)

Common Mistakes

Inventing a Form I maṣdar

❌ أعجبني كتب الطالب للمقال.

Incorrect—كتب is not the maṣdar of كتب in this meaning.

✅ أعجبتني كتابة الطالب للمقال.

ʾaʿjabatnī kitābatu ṭ-ṭālibi lil-maqāl.

I liked the student's writing of the article.

Reversing agent and patient

❌ مراجعة الخطة اللجنة ضرورية قبل التصويت.

Incorrect for ‘the committee's review of the plan’—the intended roles are not encoded by this order.

✅ مراجعة اللجنة للخطة ضرورية قبل التصويت.

murājaʿatu l-lajnati lil-khuṭṭati ḍarūriyyatun qabla t-taṣwīt.

The committee's review of the plan is necessary before the vote.

Making the adjective agree with the agent

❌ كانت قراءة الطالب السريع واضحة.

Incorrect if السريع is meant to describe the reading; it instead appears to describe the male student.

✅ كانت قراءة الطالب السريعة واضحة.

kānat qirāʾatu ṭ-ṭālibi s-sarīʿatu wāḍiḥa.

The student's rapid reading was clear.

Treating a nominal phrase as a finite tense

❌ مراجعة اللجنة الخطة الآن.

Incorrect as a complete sentence meaning ‘the committee is reviewing the plan now’; the maṣdar has no tense.

✅ تراجع اللجنة الخطة الآن.

turājiʿu l-lajnatu l-khuṭṭata l-ʾān.

The committee is reviewing the plan now.

Key Takeaways

  • A maṣdar is a case-bearing noun but can preserve the agent and patient of its underlying verb.
  • The genitive after it may be subjective or objective; meaning and explicit marking determine the role.
  • Agent iḍāfa + لـ + patient is especially clear in contemporary formal prose.
  • A possessive suffix can likewise represent either agent or patient.
  • Adjectives follow the full iḍāfa and agree with the noun they actually modify.
