Maṣdars of Forms II–X

The derived Verb Forms have much more predictable maṣdars (verbal nouns) than Form I. If you know that نَظَّمَ “organize” is Form II, its maṣdar تَنْظِيم “organizing; organization” belongs to a regular family. The broader verbal-noun pattern map places these families in the root system. A maṣdar is still a noun, however: it takes case, definiteness, adjectives, and iḍāfa complements, while the surrounding sentence supplies its time and participants.

The patterns are reliable recognition tools, not a license to manufacture vocabulary. A root need not occur in every Form, an attested verb may have an alternative maṣdar, and a familiar maṣdar may develop a specialized meaning. English speakers therefore need two habits at once: recognize the derived pattern, and verify the actual lexeme and its complement structure.

The regular map for strong roots

The following table gives the principal regular family for Forms II–X. Pattern letters ف، ع، ل stand for the three root radicals; added consonants and long vowels belong to the Form.

FormPerfect patternRegular maṣdarAttested example

Xاِسْتَفْعَلَاِسْتِفْعَالاِسْتَخْدَمَ → اِسْتِخْدَام “use → use”

Form III also has established alternatives, especially فِعَال: قَاتَلَ → قِتَال “fight → fighting.” You cannot replace every such word with an invented مفاعلة form. Form IX itself is relatively rare and concentrated in colors and bodily states; its regular pattern does not imply that every root has a Form-IX verb or maṣdar.

نظمت الوزارة الحملة خلال أسبوعين.

naẓẓamati l-wizāratu l-ḥamlata khilāla ʾusbūʿayn.

The ministry organized the campaign in two weeks.

استغرق تنظيم الحملة أسبوعين.

istaghraqa tanẓīmu l-ḥamlati ʾusbūʿayn.

Organizing the campaign took two weeks.

The finite verb نظمت identifies a past event and a feminine singular subject. The maṣdar تنظيمُ has no person or tense; it is nominative as the subject of استغرق, and الحملةِ is genitive as its iḍāfa complement. Arabic has compressed a clause into a noun phrase without erasing the semantic role of “campaign” as the thing organized.

💡
Use the Form to predict a pattern only after you have identified an attested verb. Then verify its maṣdar and meaning in a reliable dictionary; blank spaces in the Form system are normal lexical facts.

Case, definiteness, and event interpretation

A derived maṣdar declines like another noun. It may be indefinite with tanwīn, definite with الـ, or construct before a genitive dependent. An adjective follows its case and definiteness. None of those nominal markings turns it back into a finite verb.

ناقشنا تطويرا تدريجيا للخدمة.

nāqashnā taṭwīran tadrījiyyan lil-khidma.

We discussed a gradual development of the service.

أقر المجلس التطوير التدريجي للخدمة.

ʾaqarra l-majlisu t-taṭwīra t-tadrījiyya lil-khidma.

The council approved the gradual development of the service.

أدى تطوير النظام إلى انخفاض الأخطاء.

ʾaddā taṭwīru n-niẓāmi ʾilā nkhifāḍi l-ʾakhṭāʾ.

Developing the system led to a reduction in errors.

In the first example, indefinite accusative تطويرًا presents one kind or instance of development and is modified by equally indefinite تدريجيًّا. In the second, both noun and adjective are definite. In the third, تطويرُ النظامِ is an iḍāfa: تطويرُ cannot take الـ or tanwīn, and النظامِ is genitive even though it remains the semantic object of “develop.”

Aspect comes from context. بدأ تطوير النظام presents the process at its beginning; اكتمل تطوير النظام presents it as completed; سيتواصل تطوير النظام places it in the future. The noun تطوير itself is not past, present, progressive, or perfect.

Weak roots reshape the expected frame

Weak radicals و and ي interact with long vowels and endings. The result is systematic in many families, but it must be learned as an attested word rather than generated by spelling alone.

III, final-weakنَادَىمُنَادَاةlong ending plus تاء مربوطة

X, final-weakاِسْتَدْعَىاِسْتِدْعَاءfinal hamza after long ā

Root hamza and identical radicals require their own surface adjustments too. Final-hamzated Form II هَيَّأَ has تَهْيِئَة, where hamza sits on ئ before tāʾ marbūṭa; Form IV أَنْشَأَ has إِنْشَاء, with final hamza after long ā. A geminate root may separate the identical radicals inside the maṣdar: Form IV أَمَدَّ (root م-د-د) gives إِمْدَاد, and Form X اِسْتَمَرَّ (root م-ر-ر) gives اِسْتِمْرَار. The finite perfect's shadda therefore cannot simply be copied into the noun.

استكملت الهيئة تهيئة القاعة قبل وصول الوفود.

istakmalati l-hayʾatu tahyiʾata l-qāʿati qabla wuṣūli l-wufūd.

The authority completed preparing the hall before the delegations arrived.

اعتمدت اللجنة تسمية واضحة للمبادرة.

iʿtamadati l-lajnatu tasmiyatan wāḍiḥatan lil-mubādara.

The committee adopted a clear name for the initiative.

تأجلت إقامة المعرض بسبب أعمال الصيانة.

taʾajjalat ʾiqāmatu l-maʿriḍi bisababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna.

Holding the exhibition was postponed because of maintenance work.

أثار استدعاء الشاهدتين نقاشا قانونيا واسعا.

ʾathāra stidʿāʾu sh-shāhidaytayni niqāshan qānūniyyan wāsiʿā.

Summoning the two female witnesses prompted a broad legal debate. (Formal/legal.)

In إقامةُ المعرضِ, tāʾ marbūṭa is pronounced t because the word is linked to a case ending and an iḍāfa complement. In pause, إقامة ends in -a. The ending is part of the noun's morphology; it does not make the event semantically feminine.

Hamza type remains visible in spelling

Form-IV maṣdars begin with pronounced hamzat al-qaṭʿ, written below alif: إعلان، إخراج، إقامة، إعطاء. Forms VII, VIII, and X begin with hamzat al-waṣl: انكسار، اجتماع، استخدام. Its alif remains in normal writing, but the supporting vowel disappears after a preceding vowel in connected speech.

ساهم استخدام البيانات المفتوحة في تحسين الخدمات العامة.

sāhama stikhdāmu l-bayānāti l-maftūḥati fī taḥsīni l-khidamāti l-ʿāmma.

The use of open data contributed to improving public services. (Formal.)

تغير موعد الجلسة بعد اتصال المدير بالمكتب الإقليمي.

taghayyara mawʿidu l-jalsati baʿda ttiṣāli l-mudīri bil-maktabi l-ʾiqlīmiyy.

The session time changed after the manager contacted the regional office.

💡
Do not “correct” a weak maṣdar back to the strong template. تسمية، إقامة، إعطاء، اتصال, and استدعاء are the regular attested outcomes of their own weak-root families.

Common Mistakes

Inventing a regular maṣdar for an unattested Form

❌ كل جذر له مصدر مستعمل في الصيغ العشر.

Incorrect—not every root occurs productively in every derived Form, and a theoretical pattern is not evidence of an attested word.

✅ نتحقق من الفعل المشتق ومصدره في المعجم.

nataḥaqqaqu mina l-fiʿli l-mushtaqqi wa-maṣdarihi fī l-muʿjam.

We verify the derived verb and its maṣdar in the dictionary.

Forcing the strong Form-II ending onto a final-weak verb

❌ ناقشت اللجنة تسمييل المبادرة.

Incorrect—the attested Form-II maṣdar of سمى is تسمية, not an invented تسمييل.

✅ ناقشت اللجنة تسمية المبادرة.

nāqashati l-lajnatu tasmiyata l-mubādara.

The committee discussed naming the initiative.

Treating the maṣdar as a finite tense

❌ تطوير النظام يعني بنفسه أن التطوير حدث في الماضي.

Incorrect—a maṣdar has no tense by itself; its matrix verb and context locate the event in time.

✅ سيبدأ تحديث الشبكة في الربع المقبل.

sayabdaʾu taḥdīthu sh-shabakati fī r-rubʿi l-muqbil.

Modernization of the network will begin next quarter.

Reversing the iḍāfa relation

❌ تطوير النظام هو الذي يطور النظام.

Incorrect analysis—in تطوير النظام, the genitive النظام is normally the thing developed, not the developer.

✅ أشرفت الشركة على تطوير النظام.

ʾashrafati sh-sharikatu ʿalā taṭwīri n-niẓām.

The company supervised the development of the system.

Key Takeaways

  • Forms II–X have recognizable maṣdar families, but only attested verbs license actual vocabulary.
  • A maṣdar is a noun: it takes case, definiteness, modifiers, and iḍāfa complements, but no person or tense.
  • Weak roots yield established forms such as تسمية، إقامة، إعطاء، اتصال, and استدعاء.
  • Form IV begins with hamzat al-qaṭʿ; Forms VII, VIII, and X begin with hamzat al-waṣl.
  • Nominalization compresses a clause, yet arguments such as the thing organized or developed remain semantically recoverable.
