رأى — see

رَأَى / يَرَى covers both literal “see” and formal “consider, hold the view.” Its root ر-ء-ي contains a medial hamza and a final weak radical, but the ordinary imperfect يرى shows neither one transparently. That doubly irregular relationship makes this a verb to learn as a lexical bundle, not to regenerate from رأى by a general template.

The defective-verb overview explains final-weak mood behavior across verbs. This reference adds the special hamza loss, sense distinctions, and complement patterns of رأى.

Principal parts and sense-linked nouns

ItemFormUse
Perfectرَأَىhe saw / considered
Perfect, 1 sg.رَأَيْتُI saw / considered
Imperfectيَرَىhe sees / considers
Imperativeرَbehold, see! (literary/archaic); neutral MSA normally uses اُنْظُرْ
Maṣdar: perceptionرُؤْيَةٌseeing, vision
Maṣdar/noun: judgmentرَأْيٌopinion, view
Active participleرَاءٍ؛ definite الرَّائِيone who sees / viewer (limited lexical use)
Passive / passive participleرُئِيَ، يُرَى، مَرْئِيٌّwas seen, is seen, visible

The two common nouns divide the lexical field usefully. رؤية is sight, vision, or a strategic vision; رأي is an opinion or judgment. Neither licenses you to invent regular forms such as يرأى.

رأيت الحافلة عند مدخل الجامعة

raʾaytu l-ḥāfilata ʿinda madkhali l-jāmiʿa

I saw the bus at the university entrance. (Formal neutral.)

هذه رؤية واضحة لمستقبل المشروع

hādhihi ruʾyatun wāḍiḥatun limustaqbali l-mashrūʿ

This is a clear vision for the project's future. (Formal.)

💡
Use رُؤْيَة for seeing or vision and رَأْي for an opinion. The English noun “view” can correspond to either, so translate the intended sense rather than the isolated word.

The irregular paradigm in compact form

Before consonantal perfect endings, the final yāʾ surfaces: رَأَيْتُ، رَأَيْنَا، رَأَيْنَ. Third-person feminine رَأَتْ and masculine plural رَأَوْا have their own contractions. In the imperfect, the medial hamza disappears: يرى, not يرأى. The singular jussive deletes the final weak letter and leaves يَرَ.

الخبيرات رأين الفرق فور عرض الصورتين

al-khabīrātu raʾayna l-farqa fawra ʿarḍi ṣ-ṣūratayn

The female experts saw the difference as soon as the two images were shown. (Formal; feminine plural.)

لن يرى الزوار اللوحة أثناء الترميم

lan yarā z-zuwwāru l-lawḥata ʾathnāʾa t-tarmīm

Visitors will not see the painting during the restoration. (Formal; subjunctive form.)

لم ير القاضي سببا لتأجيل الجلسة

lam yara l-qāḍī sababan litaʾjīli l-jalsa

The judge saw no reason to postpone the hearing. (Formal; jussive after لم.)

The bare command رَ is grammatical but strongly (literary/archaic) in modern use, often equivalent to “behold.” In an ordinary instruction, choose اُنْظُرْ “look.” This is a case where a complete dictionary paradigm and a useful production paradigm are not identical.

Literal seeing: a direct object

Visual رأى is normally transitive and takes what is seen as a direct accusative object: رأيتُ الفيلمَ. With an attached object pronoun, stem changes precede the clitic: رآها “he saw her/it,” رأيناهم “we saw them,” رأوها “they saw it.” The weak-verb clitic page gives the larger attachment system.

رآها الحارس عند البوابة الخلفية

raʾāhā l-ḥārisu ʿinda l-bawwābati l-khalfiyya

The guard saw her at the rear gate. (Formal neutral.)

رأيناهم يغادرون المبنى بعد الاجتماع

raʾaynāhum yughādirūna l-mabnā baʿda l-ijtimāʿ

We saw them leaving the building after the meeting. (Formal.)

Judgment frames: two objects, أنَّ, and أنْ

In the cognitive sense (formal), رأى can take an object plus an accusative predicate: رأى اللجنةَ محايدةً “he considered the committee neutral.” This is not literal eyesight; the second accusative states the judgment made about the first.

رأت اللجنة الاقتراح قابلا للتنفيذ

raʾati l-lajnatu l-iqtirāḥa qābilan lit-tanfīdh

The committee considered the proposal feasible. (Formal.)

A complete proposition commonly follows أنَّ: يرى أنَّ الخطةَ مناسبةٌ “he considers that the plan is suitable.” Here أنَّ introduces a proposition believed or judged true. By contrast, رأى أنْ يؤجلَ الاجتماعَ means “he saw fit / decided to postpone the meeting”; أنْ introduces the contemplated action and governs the subjunctive.

يرى الخبراء أن السوق ستتعافى تدريجيا

yarā l-khubarāʾu ʾanna s-sūqa sataʿāfā tadrījiyyan

The experts believe that the market will recover gradually. (Formal.)

رأت الإدارة أن تؤجل إطلاق الخدمة أسبوعا

raʾati l-ʾidāratu ʾan tuʾajjila ʾiṭlāqa l-khidmati ʾusbūʿan

Management saw fit to postpone the service launch by one week. (Formal administrative style.)

Another formal frame is رأى في X Y “saw in X a Y / regarded X as an opportunity, threat, or sign.”

رأى المستثمرون في الاتفاق فرصة لدخول سوق جديدة

raʾā l-mustathmirūna fī l-ittifāqi furṣatan lidukhūli sūqin jadīda

The investors saw the agreement as an opportunity to enter a new market. (Formal.)

💡
Choose the complement by meaning: direct object for perception, two accusatives for “consider X Y,” أنَّ for a judged proposition, and أنْ + subjunctive for an action someone sees fit to take.

Common Mistakes

Preserving the hamza in the imperfect

❌ هو يرأى المشكلة بوضوح

Incorrect—the ordinary imperfect is يرى, without written hamza.

✅ هو يرى المشكلة بوضوح

huwa yarā l-mushkilata biwuḍūḥ

He sees the problem clearly.

Keeping the final weak letter after لم

❌ لم يرى القاضي دليلا كافيا

Incorrect in careful MSA—the singular jussive is يرَ.

✅ لم ير القاضي دليلا كافيا

lam yara l-qāḍī dalīlan kāfiyā

The judge did not see sufficient evidence.

Replacing the first-person stem with رأى

❌ أنا رأى الحافلة عند المدخل

Incorrect—before the first-person suffix the final yāʾ surfaces: رأيتُ.

✅ رأيت الحافلة عند المدخل

raʾaytu l-ḥāfilata ʿinda l-madkhal

I saw the bus at the entrance.

Confusing أنَّ with action-governing أنْ

❌ رأت الإدارة أن تؤجل الخدمة مناسبة

Incorrectly mixes an action clause with a nominal judgment; choose one complete frame.

✅ رأت الإدارة أن تأجيل الخدمة مناسب

raʾati l-ʾidāratu ʾanna taʾjīla l-khidmati munāsib

Management considered that postponing the service was appropriate.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn رَأَى / يَرَى / رَأَيْتُ / رُؤْيَةٌ / رَأْيٌ as a verified set.
  • The imperfect loses the medial hamza; the singular jussive is لم يرَ.
  • Literal “see” takes a direct object; judgment “consider” can take two accusatives.
  • Use أنَّ for a proposition and formal أنْ + subjunctive for an action judged advisable.
  • Bare imperative رَ is literary/archaic; ordinary instructions use اُنْظُرْ.
