اختار — choose with direct objects

اِخْتَارَ is the standard formal-MSA verb for “choose,” “select,” or “prefer.” It normally takes the chosen person or thing as a direct object: اختار الخطة “he chose the plan.” Arabic adds a preposition only when it expresses a separate relation: من بين identifies the set of alternatives, while على can identify what the chosen option was preferred over.

The verb is Form VIII from the root خ-ي-ر and is medial-weak, or hollow. Its long ا disappears before some consonant-initial endings and in the jussive and singular command: اختار، اخترت، لم يختر، اختر. This alternation is the main reason to learn the principal parts as a bundle rather than treating it as a regular sound verb; the hollow-verb overview explains the wider weak-stem system.

passiveاُخْتِيرَ — يُخْتَارُwas / is chosen

The working chain is اِخْتَارَ — يَخْتَارُ — اِخْتَرْ — اِخْتِيَارًا. The initial alif is hamzat al-waṣl: it is heard when the word begins an utterance but elides after a preceding word such as و. The root's ي reappears clearly in اختيار even though the finite stems generally show long ا or a shortened stem.

اختارت اللجنة ثلاثة مرشحين للمقابلة.

ikhtārati l-lajnatu thalāthata murashshaḥīna lil-muqābala.

يختار القارئ اللغة من القائمة الرئيسية.

yakhtāru l-qāriʾu l-lughata mina l-qāʾimati r-raʾīsiyya.

💡
Unvocalized اختار may be active اِخْتَارَ “he chose” or passive اُخْتِيرَ “was chosen.” Word order, case in careful reading, and the larger sentence—not the consonantal spelling alone—identify the voice.

The hollow Form VIII alternation

The long vowel stays in unsuffixed اختار and before vowel-initial endings such as اختاروا. It shortens and the underlying glide is absent before consonant-initial perfect suffixes: اِخْتَرْتُ، اِخْتَرْنَا، اِخْتَرْنَ. The same short stem appears when the imperfect loses its final mood vowel after لم: لَمْ يَخْتَرْ.

اختاري الإجابة الأدق ثم اشرحي سببك.

ikhtārī l-ʾijābata l-ʾadaqqa thumma shraḥī sababak.

Choose the most precise answer, then explain your reason. (Formal instruction to one woman.)

The passive has its own vowel melody: اُخْتِيرَ، يُخْتَارُ. The active and passive participles have converged in مُخْتَار. In contemporary prose, that form is far more readily understood as “chosen/selected” than as an agentive “chooser”; use a finite clause such as الشخص الذي يختار when the agent meaning must be unmistakable.

اختيرت الرواية للقائمة القصيرة هذا العام.

ukhtīrati r-riwāyatu lil-qāʾimati l-qaṣīrati hādhā l-ʿām.

The novel was selected for the shortlist this year. (Formal cultural register.)

Ranked meanings and complement frames

1. Select a person or thing: direct object

The core frame is اختار + direct object. English choose, select, and sometimes pick all map to it. The object may be concrete, a candidate, a method, or an abstract course of action.

اختار المريض العلاج الأقل كلفة بعد استشارة الطبيب.

ikhtāra l-marīḍu l-ʿilāja l-ʾaqalla kulfatan baʿda stishārati ṭ-ṭabīb.

The patient chose the less expensive treatment after consulting the doctor. (Formal neutral.)

2. Choose from a set: من or من بين

Add من when a source set is expressed: اختار كتابا من المكتبة. Use من بين when the alternatives themselves are prominent: اختار اثنين من بين عشرة متقدمين. The chosen item still remains the direct object; the prepositional phrase supplies the comparison set.

اختارت هيئة التحكيم فائزا من بين ستة متسابقين.

ikhtārat hayʾatu t-taḥkīmi fāʾizan min bayni sittati mutasābiqīn.

The jury chose a winner from among six contestants. (Formal.)

3. Prefer one alternative over another: على

The dictionary frame اختار الشيء على غيره means “choose or prefer one thing over another.” Here على introduces the rejected comparison, not the chosen object.

اختار كثير من الموظفين العمل عن بعد على الانتقال إلى العاصمة.

ikhtāra kathīrun mina l-muwaẓẓafīna l-ʿamala ʿan buʿdin ʿalā l-intiqāli ʾilā l-ʿāṣima.

Many employees chose remote work over moving to the capital. (Formal neutral.)

4. Choose to act: أن-clause or verbal noun

For a chosen action, formal MSA uses اختار أن + subjunctive or a direct verbal noun. اختار أن ينتظر is explicit and verbal; اختار الانتظار is denser and especially natural in formal writing. The understood actor of the complement is normally the chooser.

اختار الوفد أن يواصل المفاوضات حتى المساء.

ikhtāra l-wafdu ʾan yuwāṣila l-mufāwaḍāti ḥattā l-masāʾ.

The delegation chose to continue the negotiations until the evening. (Formal.)

اختارت المديرة الصمت إلى أن تكتمل المراجعة.

ikhtārati l-mudīratu ṣ-ṣamta ʾilā ʾan taktamila l-murājaʿa.

The director chose silence until the review was complete. (Formal.)

💡
Think in two layers: the selected item is direct, while من بين names its pool and على names the alternative it outranks. English often packages all three relations after choose; Arabic marks each relation separately.

Common Mistakes

Keeping the long vowel after لم

❌ لم يختار المجلس رئيسا جديدا.

Incorrect for the intended past negation—the hollow stem shortens in the jussive after لم.

✅ لم يختر المجلس رئيسا جديدا.

lam yakhtari l-majlisu raʾīsan jadīdan.

The council did not choose a new chair.

Adding a preposition before the chosen object

❌ اختارت اللجنة من الخطة الجديدة.

Incorrect for ‘the committee chose the new plan’—the chosen item is a direct object.

✅ اختارت اللجنة الخطة الجديدة.

ikhtārati l-lajnatu l-khuṭṭata l-jadīda.

The committee chose the new plan.

Using من for the rejected comparison

❌ اختار القطار من السيارة.

Incorrect for ‘he chose the train over the car’—the rejected alternative follows على in this preference frame.

✅ اختار القطار على السيارة.

ikhtāra l-qiṭāra ʿalā s-sayyāra.

He chose the train over the car.

Retaining the five-verb nūn after أن

❌ اختار الطلاب أن يدرسون في المكتبة.

Incorrect—the plural imperfect is subjunctive after أن, so its final ن drops.

✅ اختار الطلاب أن يدرسوا في المكتبة.

ikhtāra ṭ-ṭullābu ʾan yadrusū fī l-maktaba.

The students chose to study in the library.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn اِخْتَارَ — يَخْتَارُ — اِخْتَرْ — اِخْتِيَارًا as one hollow Form VIII bundle.
  • Put the selected item directly after the verb; use من بين for its source set and على for a rejected alternative.
  • Use أنْ + subjunctive or a direct verbal noun for a chosen action.
  • Read unvocalized اختار، يختار، مختار from syntax because active and passive forms can share their consonantal spelling.
