حَصَلَ — يَحْصُلُ is a sound Form-I verb from root ح-ص-ل. Without a governed complement, it can mean “happen, occur, or come about.” With على, it means “obtain, receive, or gain access to”: حصل على الموافقة “he obtained approval.” The preposition is not decorative; it creates the high-frequency obtain frame.
This contrast explains why unvocalized ما حصل can mean “what happened,” while ما حصل عليه means “what he obtained.” Both uses are standard MSA. In highly formal incident reporting, حدث or وقع may be chosen for a precise occurrence, but حصل is not automatically dialectal. In academic, administrative, and technical prose, the verbal noun phrase الحصول على is exceptionally common.
The resumptive-pronoun guide explains the broader relative-clause system behind forms such as المنحة التي حصلت عليها.
Lookup card: حَصَلَ — يَحْصُلُ
| Part | Verified form | Use |
|---|---|---|
| root and Form | ح-ص-ل، Form I | sound; normally intransitive or prepositional |
| perfect, 3 m.sg. | حَصَلَ | it happened; he obtained |
| imperfect, 3 m.sg. | يَحْصُلُ | it happens; he obtains |
| imperative, 2 m.sg. | اُحْصُلْ عَلَى | obtain / get! |
| verbal noun | حُصُولٌ | occurrence; obtaining |
| active participle | حَاصِلٌ؛ حَاصِلٌ عَلَى | resulting/present; holder of / having obtained |
| impersonal passive | حُصِلَ عَلَى | grammatical but less usual than تَمَّ الْحُصُولُ عَلَى |
| passive-participle form | مَحْصُولٌ (عَلَيْهِ) | rare “obtained”; commonly lexicalized as crop, yield, output |
The masculine-singular imperative اُحْصُلْ is natural when the obtain sense is intended, especially in instructions and advertising: احصل على نسخة “get a copy.” It is not normally used to command an event to happen. The intransitive occurrence sense supplies no personal passive. With على, an impersonal passive such as حُصِلَ على الموافقة is grammatical and attested, but contemporary formal prose more often says تم الحصول على الموافقة “approval was obtained” or recasts the clause actively.
حصل عطل مفاجئ في شبكة الكهرباء.
ḥaṣala ʿuṭlun mufājiʾun fī shabakati l-kahrabāʾ.

A regular sound paradigm
The perfect stem is stable: حصلتُ، حصلتَ، حصلتْ، حصلنا، حصلوا. The imperfect has u on the second radical: يحصلُ, and mood affects its ending regularly: لن يحصلَ in the subjunctive and لم يحصلْ in the jussive. Commands are احصلْ، احصلي، احصلا، احصلوا، احصلنَ.
| Environment | Form | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|

Sense 1: happen, occur, or arise
In this use, the event is the grammatical subject. It may follow the verb, as in حصل حادثٌ, or precede it, as in الحادث حصل أمس. Place and domain commonly follow في; participants in a dispute or exchange may follow بين. ما حصل packages the entire event as “what happened.”
ما حصل في الاجتماع لن يؤثر في موعد المشروع.

What happened in the meeting will not affect the project's schedule. (Formal neutral.)

ʾidhā ḥaṣala taʾkhīrun, fa-sanuʿlimu l-musāfirīna fawran.
If a delay occurs, we will inform the passengers immediately. (Formal.)
For a harmful event affecting a person, formal Arabic often prefers حدث له حادث “an accident happened to him” or تعرّض لحادث “he was involved in/suffered an accident.” حصل على حادث cannot express “had an accident,” because على activates the obtain frame.
Sense 2: obtain, receive, or gain access to
The obtainer is the subject, and the acquired result follows على. This frame covers permissions, qualifications, awards, information, opportunities, support, scores, and access. It does not require literal physical possession.
حصلت الشركة على الترخيص بعد مراجعة استمرت ستة أشهر.
ḥaṣalati sh-sharikatu ʿalā t-tarkhīṣi baʿda murājaʿatin stamarrat sittata ʾashhur.
The company obtained the license after a review lasting six months. (Formal/administrative.)

yumkinu lil-mushtarikīna l-ḥuṣūlu ʿalā t-taqrīri biṣīghatin raqamiyya.
Subscribers can obtain the report in digital format. (Formal.)
With a pronoun object of the preposition, keep على: حصل عليه، حصل عليها، حصلوا عليها. In a relative clause, the resumptive pronoun likewise remains: المعلومات التي حصلنا عليها “the information that we obtained.” English leaves a gap after obtained; Arabic explicitly links back with ها.
هذه هي البيانات التي حصلنا عليها من المختبر.
hādhihi hiya l-bayānātu llatī ḥaṣalnā ʿalayhā mina l-mukhtabar.
These are the data that we obtained from the laboratory. (Formal/academic.)
حَاصِل, حُصُول, and مَحْصُول
The active participle حاصل على describes a current qualification or attained status: حاصل على شهادة “holding a degree/certificate.” It agrees with its referent: feminine حاصلة على, plural masculine حاصلون على. It often corresponds to English has, holds, or is a recipient of, not the progressive “is obtaining.”
المتقدمة حاصلة على درجة الماجستير في الهندسة.
al-mutaqaddimatu ḥāṣilatun ʿalā darajati l-mājistīri fī l-handasa.
The applicant holds a master's degree in engineering. (Formal/administrative.)
Bare حاصل has specialized noun meanings such as “result,” حاصل الجمع “sum,” and حاصل الضرب “product” (academic/mathematical). Traditional lexicographic description allows مَحْصُولٌ عَلَيْهِ as a passive-participial expression meaning “obtained,” but contemporary prose most often lexicalizes bare محصول as “crop, harvest, yield, output.” It does not replace حاصل على for a person who holds a qualification.
زاد محصول القمح هذا العام رغم قلة الأمطار.
zāda maḥṣūlu l-qamḥi hādhā l-ʿāma raghma qillati l-ʾamṭār.
The wheat yield increased this year despite the low rainfall. (Formal/agricultural.)
When an impersonal result matters more than its obtainer, formal bureaucratic prose frequently uses تمَّ الحصول على. It is grammatical but often heavy; an active subject is clearer when the actor is known.
تم الحصول على موافقة الجهات المختصة.
tamma l-ḥuṣūlu ʿalā muwāfaqati l-jihāti l-mukhtaṣṣa.
Approval from the competent authorities was obtained. (Formal/bureaucratic.)

✅ حصلت الشركة على الترخيص أمس.
ḥaṣalati sh-sharikatu ʿalā t-tarkhīṣi ʾams.
The company obtained the license yesterday.
Using على for an unwanted event

The driver was involved in an accident on the road.
Stranding على in a relative clause

✅ قرأت التقرير الذي حصلنا عليه من الوزارة.
qaraʾtu t-taqrīra lladhī ḥaṣalnā ʿalayhi mina l-wizāra.
I read the report that we obtained from the ministry.
Treating محصول as “a person who obtained”
❌ المرشح محصول على شهادة جامعية.
Incorrect—in ordinary contemporary prose, a qualification-holder is حاصل على; محصول على is not this frame.
✅ المرشح حاصل على شهادة جامعية.
al-murashshaḥu ḥāṣilun ʿalā shahādatin jāmiʿiyya.
The candidate holds a university degree.
Key Takeaways
- حصل — يحصل — حصولًا is morphologically regular but has two distinct frames.
- Without على, it can mean “happen, occur, arise”; the event is its subject.
- حصل على + noun means “obtain, receive, gain, or gain access to.” Keep على and its resumptive pronoun where required.
- حاصل على describes a holder or recipient, while محصول means a crop, yield, or output.
- The occurrence sense has no personal passive; the obtain frame admits less common حُصِلَ على, while تم الحصول على is the frequent formal impersonal alternative.
