حدث — happen

The unvocalized spelling حدث belongs to several related words, but two verbs do most of the work in contemporary Modern Standard Arabic. Form I حَدَثَ — يَحْدُثُ is intransitive: an event “happens” or “occurs.” Form II حَدَّثَ — يُحَدِّثُ is transitive: someone “tells” another person about something or “updates” data, software, or equipment.

English distinguishes happen, tell, and update in spelling. Arabic distinguishes them through vowel pattern, gemination, syntax, and context. Unvocalized حدثت can therefore represent “it happened,” “she told,” “you updated,” and other readings. A reliable learner looks beyond the consonants: does the clause contain an event as subject, a person as object, or a technical item being updated?

PartVerified formUse
root and Formح-د-ث، Form Isound, normally intransitive
perfect, 3 m.sg.حَدَثَit happened / occurred
imperfect, 3 m.sg.يَحْدُثُit happens / is happening
imperative—not an ordinary command with the “happen” sense
verbal nounحُدُوثٌhappening; occurrence
active participle / nounحَادِثٌoccurring/new; more often “incident, accident” as a noun
passive—not normally formed from intransitive “happen”

Because حَدَثَ does not assign a direct object, there is no ordinary personal passive corresponding to English be happened. The morphologically imaginable imperative is likewise not a normal practical command: speakers do not generally order an event to “happen.” In commands meaning “make something happen,” Arabic chooses another causative expression, such as أَحْدِثْ تغييرًا “bring about a change” or اجعل الأمر يحدث “make it happen,” according to context.

حدث العطل أثناء تحديث النظام.

ḥadatha l-ʿuṭlu ʾathnāʾa taḥdīthi n-niẓām.

The malfunction occurred while the system was being updated. (Formal/technical.)

يحدث هذا النوع من الأخطاء عند انقطاع الاتصال.

yaḥduthu hādhā n-nawʿu mina l-ʾakhṭāʾi ʿinda nqiṭāʿi l-ittiṣāl.

This type of error occurs when the connection is interrupted. (Formal/technical.)

💡
With حدث “happen,” the event is the subject even when it follows the verb: حدث عطلٌ means “a malfunction occurred,” not “someone happened a malfunction.”

Tense and mood of “happen”

Form I is morphologically sound. Its perfect forms include حدثتُ، حدثتْ، حدثنا، حدثوا; its imperfect forms include يحدثُ، تحدثُ، نحدثُ. Mood changes only the final vowel or sukūn: يحدثُ indicative, لن يحدثَ subjunctive, لم يحدثْ jussive.

لن يحدث التغيير بين ليلة وضحاها.

lan yaḥdutha t-taghyīru bayna laylatin wa-ḍuḥāhā.

The change will not happen overnight. (Formal neutral; subjunctive.)

لم يحدث أي تأخير في الرحلة الصباحية.

lam yaḥduth ʾayyu taʾkhīrin fī r-riḥlati ṣ-ṣabāḥiyya.

No delay occurred on the morning flight. (Formal; jussive.)

كان ما حدث بعد الاجتماع متوقعا.

kāna mā ḥadatha baʿda l-ijtimāʿi mutawaqqaʿan.

What happened after the meeting was expected. (Formal neutral.)

Core frames with Form I

An event happens in a place or time

The event can precede or follow the verb. في locates it, and time expressions occur without changing the verb's valency. With verb-first order and a following plural subject, formal MSA normally keeps the verb singular: حدثت تغييراتٌ because تغييرات is a non-human plural and takes feminine-singular agreement.

حدثت تغييرات مهمة في إجراءات التسجيل هذا العام.

ḥadathat taghyīrātun muhimmatun fī ʾijrāʾāti t-tasjīli hādhā l-ʿām.

Important changes occurred in the registration procedures this year. (Formal.)

ماذا حدث في الميناء مساء أمس؟

mādhā ḥadatha fī l-mīnāʾi masāʾa ʾams?

What happened at the port yesterday evening? (Formal neutral.)

Something happens to someone

Use لـ for the affected person or thing: ماذا حدث له؟ “What happened to him?” The prepositional object is not a direct object of حدث. With two participants, بين can locate an event or disagreement between them.

لم نعرف ما حدث للموظف بعد مغادرته المكتب.

lam naʿrif mā ḥadatha lil-muwaẓẓafi baʿda mughādaratihi l-maktab.

We did not know what happened to the employee after he left the office. (Formal neutral.)

حدث خلاف بين الشريكين بشأن التمويل.

ḥadatha khilāfun bayna sh-sharīkayni bishaʾni t-tamwīl.

A disagreement arose between the two partners over financing. (Formal.)

It happened that...

حدث أنَّ + clause introduces a factual event: “it happened that...” This construction is grammatical but more common in narrative and formal prose than in brisk everyday reporting. A following past-tense clause is normal.

حدث أنني التقيت المدير في المطار في اليوم نفسه.

ḥadatha ʾannanī ltaqaytu l-mudīra fī l-maṭāri fī l-yawmi nafsih.

It happened that I met the director at the airport that same day. (Formal/narrative.)

The surface sequence أنني contains أنَّ plus the first-person suffix. English happen to + verb often expresses chance; Arabic may use this finite حدث أنَّ construction, صادف أنَّ, or a simpler clause, depending on emphasis.

Form II: حَدَّثَ “tell” or “update”

Form II is not merely a transitive version of “happen.” It has two established lexical centers: narrating or telling, and updating or modernizing. Its doubled middle radical must be audible in vocalized reading.

PartVerified formUse
perfect / imperfectحَدَّثَ — يُحَدِّثُtold — tells; updated — updates
imperativeحَدِّثْtell! / update!
verbal nounتَحْدِيثٌupdating; modernization
active participleمُحَدِّثٌnarrator; updater
passive participleمُحَدَّثٌupdated; modernized
passiveحُدِّثَ — يُحَدَّثُwas / is told or updated

In the telling frame, the listener is a direct object and the topic takes عن: حدّثني عن رحلتك “tell me about your trip.” A clause with بما can supply what was reported. In the technical frame, the data, software, record, or equipment is the direct object.

حدثتني الباحثة عن الصعوبات التي واجهتها في الميدان.

ḥaddathatnī l-bāḥithatu ʿani ṣ-ṣuʿūbāti llatī wājahathā fī l-maydān.

The researcher told me about the difficulties she faced in the field. (Formal neutral.)

حدث المدير الموظفين بما جرى في الاجتماع.

ḥaddatha l-mudīru l-muwaẓẓafīna bimā jarā fī l-ijtimāʿ.

The director told the employees what had taken place in the meeting. (Formal.)

حدث التطبيق إلى الإصدار الأخير قبل فتح الملف.

ḥaddithi t-taṭbīqa ʾilā l-ʾiṣdāri l-ʾakhīri qabla fatḥi l-milaf.

Update the application to the latest version before opening the file. (Formal/technical; addressed to one man.)

تحدث قاعدة البيانات تلقائيا كل ليلة.

tuḥaddathu qāʿidatu l-bayānāti tilqāʾiyyan kulla layla.

The database is updated automatically every night. (Formal/technical passive.)

💡
Form II حدّث شخصًا عن شيء means “tell someone about something.” Form V تحدّث مع شخص عن شيء means “speak with someone about something.” The first profiles transmission from narrator to listener; the second profiles speech or conversation.

The separate تحدث reference covers Form V in depth. For this page, the essential contrast is transitivity: حدّثني has direct-object ني, while تحدّث معي uses معي.

Common Mistakes

Giving intransitive حدث a direct object

❌ حدث المدير تغييرا في الجدول.

Incorrect for ‘the director brought about a change’—Form I حدث is intransitive, so the director cannot take a direct object with that causative meaning.

✅ أحدث المدير تغييرا في الجدول.

ʾaḥdatha l-mudīru taghyīran fī l-jadwal.

The director made a change to the schedule.

Omitting the listener/object contrast

❌ حدثت مع الخبيرة عن المشروع.

Incorrect for ‘I spoke with the expert’—Form II حدثت takes a direct listener; a two-way conversation uses Form V تحدثت.

✅ تحدثت مع الخبيرة عن المشروع.

taḥaddathtu maʿa l-khabīrati ʿani l-mashrūʿ.

I spoke with the expert about the project.

Using Form I for a software update

❌ حدث البرنامج قبل تشغيله.

ḥadatha l-barnāmaju qabla tashghīlih

Incorrect reading for the command ‘update the program’; ungeminated حَدَثَ is Form I ‘it happened.’

✅ حدث البرنامج قبل تشغيله.

ḥaddithi l-barnāmaja qabla tashghīlih.

Update the program before running it.

Adding a passive to “happen”

❌ حدث الحادث عند الظهر.

ḥuditha l-ḥādithu ʿinda ẓ-ẓuhr

Incorrect passive reading—Form I ‘happen’ is intransitive and the incident itself is the subject.

✅ حدث الحادث عند الظهر.

ḥadatha l-ḥādithu ʿinda ẓ-ẓuhr.

The incident occurred at noon.

Key Takeaways

  • Form I حدث — يحدث — حدوثًا means “happen/occur” and is normally intransitive, with no useful ordinary passive or command.
  • The event is its subject; an affected person takes لـ, and place or domain commonly takes في.
  • Form II حدّث — يحدّث is transitive: حدّث شخصًا عن شيء “tell someone about something” or حدّث البيانات “update the data.”
  • Form V تحدّث means “speak/talk” and uses prepositions such as مع and عن.
  • In unvocalized text, syntax—not consonant spelling alone—distinguishes these readings.
