The nisba adjective relates something to a place, people, field, institution, time, or other noun. Its characteristic masculine singular suffix is ـيّ -iyy: مصر → مصريّ “Egypt → Egyptian,” اقتصاد → اقتصاديّ “economy → economic,” and جامعة → جامعيّ “university → university-related/academic.” The final yāʾ is doubled, so pausal مصريّ ends in a firm -iyy, not long -ī alone.
Simple stems make the process look automatic, but established nisba forms can shorten, reshape, or extend the base. Meaning also lexicalizes: مدنيّ may mean “civil/civilian,” not merely “of a city.” Learn the attested adjective and its usage; use the suffix as an analysis and memory aid.
The ف ع ل template guide helps separate radicals from derivational material; nisba adds a suffix to an attested noun stem rather than filling a verb Form.
The basic stem plus ـيّ
For a simple consonant-final base, add doubled يّ. The suffix is derivational material rather than a root radical:
| Base | Root/family | Nisba | Established meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| مِصْر | م ص ر | مِصْرِيّ | Egyptian |
| عَرَب | ع ر ب | عَرَبِيّ | Arab; Arabic |
| عِلْم | ع ل م | عِلْمِيّ | scientific |
| فَنّ | ف ن ن | فَنِّيّ | technical; artistic, by context |
نشر المركز تقريرا اقتصاديا عن سوق العمل.
nashara l-markazu taqrīran iqtiṣādiyyan ʿan sūqi l-ʿamal.
The center published an economic report on the labor market.
Base اقتصاد takes ـيّ to form اقتصاديّ. Accusative masculine indefinite اقتصاديّاً agrees with تقريراً; the shadda remains part of the stem before the case ending.
تقدم الجامعة برنامجا علميا للطلاب الدوليين.
tuqaddimu l-jāmiʿatu barnāmajan ʿilmiyyan li-ṭ-ṭullābi d-duwaliyyīn.
The university offers a scientific program for international students.
Substituting root-family base علم gives علميّ; base دول gives lexicalized دوليّ “international.” The shared suffix signals relation, but the natural English equivalents differ.
Tāʾ marbūṭa normally drops before the suffix
When the base ends in ة, remove that ending and attach ـيّ to the remaining stem. Thus جامعة → جامعيّ, مكة → مكّيّ, and مدرسة → مدرسيّ where the established adjective is intended.
يسكن الطلاب في السكن الجامعي قرب المكتبة.
yaskunu ṭ-ṭullābu fī s-sakani l-jāmiʿiyyi qurba l-maktaba(h).
The students live in university housing near the library.
Genitive definite الجامعيِّ agrees with السكنِ after في. The ة of جامعة is not a radical and does not remain before nisba ـيّ.
زار الوفد مركزا مكيا يعنى بتاريخ المدينة.
zāra l-wafdu markazan makkiyyan yuʿnā bi-tārīkhi l-madīna(h).
The delegation visited a Meccan center concerned with the city's history.
مكّيّ keeps the doubled ك already heard in مكّة and adds doubled nisba يّ. This is why spelling must follow the attested stem rather than a simplistic “delete the last letter” routine.
Final vowels and established stem changes
Bases ending in long vowels often lose or reshape that ending. فرنسا → فرنسيّ “French” and سوريا → سوريّ “Syrian” are standard examples. Other nouns insert و before the nisba suffix: سنة → سنويّ “annual,” لغة → لغويّ “linguistic,” يد → يدويّ “manual,” صحراء → صحراويّ “desert-related.”
يعقد المؤتمر السنوي في الأسبوع الأول من مايو.
yuʿqadu l-muʾtamaru s-sanawiyyu fī l-ʾusbūʿi l-ʾawwali min māyū.
The annual conference is held in the first week of May.

rājaʿa l-bāḥithu t-taḥlīla l-lughawiyya qabla ʾirsāli l-maqāl.
The researcher reviewed the linguistic analysis before submitting the article.
The forms are سنويّ and لغويّ, not mechanically transparent outputs سنّيّ or لغّيّ. Historical morphology explains many such shapes, but a modern learner still needs to memorize which stem an established adjective uses.
نفذ الفريق مسحا ميدانيا في منطقة صحراوية.
naffadha l-farīqu masḥan maydāniyyan fī minṭaqatin ṣaḥrāwiyya(h).
The team carried out a field survey in a desert region.
Feminine صحراوية derives from masculine صحراويّ, not directly by appending a visible suffix to unchanged صحراء.
Feminine and plural inflection
The masculine singular nisba stem ends -iyy. Feminine singular adds tāʾ marbūṭa: مصريّة miṣriyya(h) at pause and مصريّةٌ miṣriyyatun in full connected case. Human masculine plurals normally use ـيّون / ـيّين; feminine human plurals use ـيّات.
| Form | Arabic | Typical reading |
|---|---|---|
| masculine singular, pause | مِصْرِيّ | miṣriyy |
| feminine singular, pause | مِصْرِيَّة | miṣriyya(h) |
| masculine plural nominative | مِصْرِيُّونَ | miṣriyyūna |
| masculine plural accusative/genitive | مِصْرِيِّينَ | miṣriyyīna |
| feminine plural | مِصْرِيَّات | miṣriyyāt |
تدير المشروع مهندسة مصرية متخصصة في الطاقة.
tudīru l-mashrūʿa muhandisatun miṣriyyatun mutakhaṣṣiṣatun fī ṭ-ṭāqa(h).
An Egyptian engineer specializing in energy manages the project.
شارك باحثون عراقيون وباحثات سوريات في الندوة.
shāraka bāḥithūna ʿirāqiyyūna wa-bāḥithātun sūriyyātun fī n-nadwa(h).
Iraqi male researchers and Syrian female researchers took part in the seminar.
Because the verb precedes a coordinated plural subject, singular masculine شارك is normal. Within each noun phrase, the nisba adjective follows human gender and number.
With non-human plurals, the normal agreement is feminine singular:
نشرت الصحيفة تقارير دولية جديدة عن الأزمة.
nasharati ṣ-ṣaḥīfatu taqārīra duwaliyyatan jadīdatan ʿani l-ʾazma(h).
The newspaper published new international reports on the crisis.
Plural non-human تقارير takes feminine singular دوليةً جديدةً, not masculine plural دوليون.
Pausal -iyy versus connected case
At sentence-final pause, masculine nisba retains its doubled yāʾ but normally loses the short case ending:
هذا قرار إداري.
hādhā qarārun ʾidāriyy.
This is an administrative decision.
Inside connected full inflection, the case ending follows the doubled consonant:
أرسل المدير قرارا إداريا جديدا إلى الأقسام.
ʾarsala l-mudīru qarāran ʾidāriyyan jadīdan ʾilā l-ʾaqsām.
The director sent a new administrative decision to the departments.
Do not confuse case-related -iyyun/-iyyan/-iyyin with the derivational suffix itself. The stable core is -iyy; gender, number, definiteness, and case add morphology around it.
Root families help, but nisba is stem-based
Nisba attaches to an attested nominal base, not directly to an abstract three-consonant root. Root ع ر ب connects عرب “Arabs,” عربيّ “Arab/Arabic,” and عربية “Arabic language; Arab feminine,” but the meaning of each word is lexical.
تدرس ليلى الأدب العربي الحديث في الجامعة.
tadrusu laylā l-ʾadaba l-ʿarabiyya l-ḥadītha fī l-jāmiʿa(h).
Layla studies modern Arabic literature at university.
Substitute base مصر and the same suffix yields مصريّ. That formal parallel is real, but not every root has a usable country, field, or relational noun from which speakers create a nisba.
Root hamza must not be mistaken for suffix material. قراءة from ق ر أ has established nisba قرائيّ in expressions such as مهارات قرائية “reading skills”; hamza remains before ـيّ.
يهدف البرنامج إلى تنمية مهارات قرائية لدى الأطفال.
yahdifu l-barnāmaju ʾilā tanmiyati mahārātin qirāʾiyyatin ladā l-ʾaṭfāl.
The program aims to develop reading skills among children.
The final ئ carries root hamza on its seat; the following doubled يّ is the nisba suffix.
Lexical meaning can drift
مدنيّ is historically related to مدينة “city,” but modern formal uses include “civil,” “civilian,” and “civic,” depending on the noun. دوليّ means “international,” not simply “of states” in every context. Such meanings belong to established collocations.
تعمل المنظمة في مجال الدفاع المدني وإدارة الكوارث.
taʿmalu l-munaẓẓamatu fī majāli d-difāʿi l-madaniyyi wa-ʾidārati l-kawārith.
The organization works in civil defense and disaster management.
Here مدنيّ means “civil,” not “urban.” Pattern recognition gets you to the lexical neighborhood; the collocation gives the actual translation.
Common Mistakes
Pronouncing masculine pausal ـيّ as a single long vowel
❌ هذا تقرير علمي.
hādhā taqrīrun ʿilmī
Incorrect — pausal nisba retains doubled y: ʿilmiyy.
✅ هذا تقرير علمي يعتمد على بيانات موثوقة.
hādhā taqrīrun ʿilmiyyun yaʿtamidu ʿalā bayānātin mawthūqa(h).
This is a scientific report based on reliable data.
Keeping tāʾ marbūṭa from the base
❌ سكن جامعةي قريب من المكتبة.
Incorrect — جامعة drops ة before attested جامعيّ; the doubled y belongs to the suffix.
✅ يقع السكن الجامعي بالقرب من محطة الحافلات.
yaqaʿu s-sakanu l-jāmiʿiyyu bi-l-qurbi min maḥaṭṭati l-ḥāfilāt.
The university housing is near the bus station.
Predicting an irregular stem mechanically
❌ الاجتماع السنتي يعني الاجتماع السنوي.
Incorrect — the established adjective from سنة is سنويّ, with the stem change -awiyy.
✅ يناقش الاجتماع السنوي خطة العمل للعام المقبل.
yunāqishu l-ijtimāʿu s-sanawiyyu khuṭṭata l-ʿamali li-l-ʿāmi l-muqbil.
The annual meeting discusses the work plan for the coming year.
Using human plural agreement with non-human nouns
❌ نشرت المجلة مقالات علميون جديدون.
Incorrect — non-human plural مقالات takes feminine singular adjectives.
✅ نشرت المجلة دراسات علمية جديدة هذا الشهر.
nasharati l-majallatu dirāsātin ʿilmiyyatan jadīdatan hādhā sh-shahr.
The journal published new scientific studies this month.
Dropping root hamza from a derived nisba
❌ مهارات قراية هي الصيغة الفصحى للمهارات القرائية.
Incorrect — formal قرائيّ preserves root hamza from قراءة and ق ر أ.
✅ يقيس الاختبار مهارات قرائية وكتابية أساسية.
yaqīsu l-ikhtibāru mahārātin qirāʾiyyatan wa-kitābiyyatan ʾasāsiyya(h).

Key Takeaways
- Masculine nisba ـيّ ends in doubled -iyy, including at pause.
- Feminine ـيّة, human plurals ـيّون / ـيّين / ـيّات, and non-human plural agreement follow ordinary adjective grammar.
- Simple consonant-final bases take the suffix transparently; tāʾ marbūṭa and final vowels often reshape or disappear.
- Established forms such as سنويّ، لغويّ، صحراويّ, and مدنيّ must be learned with their lexical meanings.
- Nisba attaches to an attested stem; roots help organize the family but cannot predict every word or surface change.
