دون — without, below, short of

دون organizes several meanings around something being on the nearer or lower side of a boundary. If an action happens دون مساعدة, assistance is left outside the event: “without help.” If a result is دون المتوقع, it falls below an expected standard. If one person is chosen دون غيره, everyone else is excluded: “that person rather than others.”

These meanings are related, but English hides their connection by using without, below, under, short of, apart from, and rather than. Learn the construction around دون, not a single replacement word. The forms دون and من دون both occur in contemporary formal MSA; the outer من changes case and can make the separation or exclusion more explicit.

For a true exception headed by إلا, compare Alternatives to إلا; دون غيره adds contrastive selection rather than serving as a universal substitute for “except.”

دون + a noun: absence from an event

دون + noun or verbal noun means that the event occurs without the named participant, instrument, or circumstance. دون is a relational noun used adverbially: in fully inflected Arabic it is normally accusative دُونَ, and its complement is genitive. After من, it becomes genitive: مِنْ دُونِ.

غادر الموظف المكتب دون إذن مديره.

ghādara l-muwaẓẓafu l-maktaba dūna ʾidhni mudīrih.

The employee left the office without his manager’s permission.

يمكن استخدام التطبيق من دون اتصال بالإنترنت.

yumkinu stikhdāmu t-taṭbīqi min dūni ttiṣālin bil-ʾintarnit.

The application can be used without an internet connection.

نجح الفريق دون مساعدة خارجية.

najaḥa l-farīqu dūna musāʿadatin khārijiyya.

The team succeeded without outside help.

The complement can form an iḍāfa: دون إذنِ مديرِه. The first noun is genitive after دون, and the second is genitive because it completes إذن.

💡
Both دون مساعدة and من دون مساعدة are standard. Do not invent a difference that every context must preserve. من دون often makes separation more explicit, while editorial and regional preferences also influence the choice.

Without doing: دون أن + subjunctive

Before a finite event, use دون أن + imperfect subjunctive. أن governs the verb; دون scopes over the whole event. This often translates as “without doing,” but the Arabic clause can have its own subject.

خرج من الغرفة دون أن يقول شيئا.

kharaja mina l-ghurfati dūna ʾan yaqūla shayʾan.

He left the room without saying anything.

اتخذت اللجنة القرار من دون أن تستشير الخبراء.

ittakhadhati l-lajnatu l-qarāra min dūni ʾan tastashīra l-khubarāʾ.

The committee made the decision without consulting the experts.

تم التغيير دون أن تتأثر الخدمات الأساسية.

tamma t-taghyīru dūna ʾan tataʾaththara l-khadamātu l-ʾasāsiyya.

The change was made without the essential services being affected. (Formal.)

The subject of تتأثر is الخدمات, not the implicit agent that made the change. English learners sometimes assume “without + -ing” must share the main subject; Arabic دون أن does not impose that restriction.

Negation changes scope. لم يغادر دون أن يودعنا means “he did not leave without saying goodbye”—in context, he did say goodbye. غادر دون أن يودعنا means that the farewell did not occur.

لم يغادر الضيف دون أن يشكر المضيفين.

lam yughādiri ḍ-ḍayfu dūna ʾan yashkura l-muḍīfīn.

The guest did not leave without thanking the hosts.

Pronoun suffixes: without or apart from someone

A suffix can fill the complement slot: دوني، دونك، دونه، دونها، دوننا، دونهم. With من, the common sequence is من دونه، من دونها. Context decides whether the relation is absence (“without him”), exclusion (“apart from him”), or a literal lower position.

شرعوا في الاجتماع من دوني مع أنني المسؤول عن الملف.

sharaʿū fī l-ijtimāʿi min dūnī maʿa ʾannanī l-masʾūlu ʿani l-malaf.

They started the meeting without me even though I am responsible for the file.

لا يمكن إكمال المشروع من دونه.

lā yumkinu ʾikmālu l-mashrūʿi min dūnih.

The project cannot be completed without him.

Be careful with isolated دونك: in elevated or formulaic usage, دونك can function as an imperative-like expression meaning “here you are; take.” That construction is not simply “without you” and is not productive everyday MSA. Ordinary context and من دونك remove the ambiguity.

Below a level or threshold

With measurements, rank, quality, age, or expectations, دون means “below,” “under,” or “less than.” The boundary can be numerical or evaluative.

انخفضت درجة الحرارة إلى دون الصفر ليلا.

inkhafaḍat darajatu l-ḥarārati ʾilā dūni ṣ-ṣifri laylan.

The temperature fell below zero at night.

لا يسمح بالدخول لمن هم دون سن الثامنة عشرة.

lā yusmaḥu bid-dukhūli liman hum dūna sinni th-thāminata ʿashra.

Entry is not permitted to those under the age of eighteen. (Formal.)

جاءت النتائج دون المستوى المطلوب.

jāʾati n-natāʾiju dūna l-mustawā l-maṭlūb.

The results fell below the required standard.

كان الإقبال دون المتوقع هذا العام.

kāna l-ʾiqbālu dūna l-mutawaqqaʿi hādhā l-ʿām.

Turnout was lower than expected this year.

In إلى دون الصفر, outer إلى governs دونِ; in predicate النتائج دون المستوى, دونَ retains its ordinary adverbial accusative. The complement after it is genitive in both.

💡
Use the surrounding syntax to read the hidden case: دونَ المستوى as an adverbial/predicate relation, but إلى دونِ المستوى or من دونِ إذن after an outer preposition.

Short of a requirement

The boundary need not be spatial or numerical. دون can say that an action stops short of a required result or that something is insufficient for a standard: دون تحقيق الهدف “without/short of achieving the goal,” دون المطلوب “less than required.” Context may permit both “without” and “short of,” and the surrounding predicate resolves the emphasis.

انتهت المفاوضات دون التوصل إلى اتفاق.

intahati l-mufāwaḍātu dūna t-tawaṣṣuli ʾilā ttifāq.

The negotiations ended without reaching an agreement.

توقفت الأعمال دون إكمال المرحلة الأخيرة.

tawaqqafati l-ʾaʿmālu dūna ʾikmāli l-marḥalati l-ʾakhīra.

The work stopped short of completing the final phase.

When ambiguity would matter, choose a more explicit construction: من غير أن for “without,” أقل من for a numerical comparison, or لم يبلغ for “did not reach.” Good formal writing does not rely on a dictionary gloss when readers could take two scopes.

Exclusion and selection: دون غيره

دون غيره and دون سواه single out one person or thing to the exclusion of others: “rather than anyone/anything else,” “in particular,” or “and no other.” This is more emphatic and formal than ordinary غير.

اختارت اللجنة هذا الموقع دون غيره لقربه من وسائل النقل.

ikhtārati l-lajnatu hādhā l-mawqiʿa dūna ghayrihi liqurbihi min wasāʾili n-naql.

The committee chose this site rather than any other because it is close to public transport. (Formal.)

لماذا منح هذا المورد العقد دون سواه؟

limādhā muniḥa hādhā l-muwarridu l-ʿaqda dūna siwāh?

Why was this supplier, rather than any other, awarded the contract?

For simple “except,” إلا or باستثناء may be clearer. دون غيره carries a contrastive selection: this one, not the alternatives.

Formal constructions

Two important (formal) patterns deserve to be learned intact. حال دون + verbal noun means “prevented; stood in the way of,” while دون المساس بـ means “without prejudice to / without compromising.” English government does not predict either construction.

حال سوء الطقس دون إقلاع الطائرة في موعدها.

ḥāla sūʾu ṭ-ṭaqsi dūna ʾiqlāʿi ṭ-ṭāʾirati fī mawʿidihā.

Bad weather prevented the plane from taking off on time. (Formal; Arabic literally places an obstacle before takeoff.)

يجوز تعديل الجدول دون المساس بحقوق العاملين.

yajūzu taʿdīlu l-jadwali dūna l-masāsi biḥuqūqi l-ʿāmilīn.

The schedule may be amended without prejudice to employees’ rights. (Formal/legal.)

اتخذت التدابير اللازمة من دون تأخير.

uttukhidhati t-tadābīru l-lāzimatu min dūni taʾkhīr.

The necessary measures were taken without delay. (Formal.)

Common Mistakes

Treating every English under as دون

❌ وضعت الحقيبة دون الطاولة.

Wrong for the neutral physical location intended here—use تحت الطاولة. دون suggests a boundary, lower rank, absence, or exclusion rather than ordinary ‘underneath.’

✅ وضعت الحقيبة تحت الطاولة دون أن تسد الممر.

waḍaʿtu l-ḥaqībata taḥta ṭ-ṭāwilati dūna ʾan tasudda l-mamarr.

I put the bag under the table without blocking the aisle.

Using the indicative after أن

❌ غادر دون أن يقول شيئا.

ghādara dūna ʾan yaqūlu shayʾan

Incorrect reading—أن governs the subjunctive يقولَ, not the indicative يقولُ.

✅ غادر دون أن يقول شيئا.

ghādara dūna ʾan yaqūla shayʾan.

He left without saying anything.

Ignoring the case change after من or إلى

❌ من دون المساعدة.

min dūna l-musāʿadati

Incorrect reading—after من, the form is genitive من دونِ المساعدةِ, not من دونَ المساعدةِ.

✅ أكمل المهمة من دون المساعدة التي طلبها.

ʾakmala l-muhimmata min dūni l-musāʿadati llatī ṭalabahā.

He completed the task without the help he had requested.

Stranding دون

❌ هذا هو الخبير الذي لا نستطيع إكمال العمل من دون.

Incorrect—formal Arabic requires the resumptive suffix دونه.

✅ هذا هو الخبير الذي لا نستطيع إكمال العمل من دونه.

hādhā huwa l-khabīru lladhī lā nastaṭīʿu ʾikmāla l-ʿamali min dūnih.

This is the expert without whom we cannot complete the work.

Translating prevent with a direct object after حال

❌ حال المطر إكمال العمل.

Incorrect for this sense—حال ‘prevented’ requires دون before the prevented event.

✅ حال المطر الغزير دون إكمال العمل في موعده.

ḥāla l-maṭaru l-ghazīru dūna ʾikmāli l-ʿamali fī mawʿidih.

The heavy rain prevented the work from being completed on time.

Detaching one-letter بـ

❌ وافقوا دون المساس ب حقوق السكان.

Incorrect—one-letter بـ attaches directly to حقوق.

✅ وافقوا على الخطة دون المساس بحقوق السكان.

wāfaqū ʿalā l-khuṭṭati dūna l-masāsi biḥuqūqi s-sukkān.

They approved the plan without compromising residents’ rights.

Key Takeaways

  • دون links absence, exclusion, lower position, and failure to reach a boundary; choose the reading from the construction and context.
  • Use دون/من دون + genitive noun or دون أن + subjunctive clause.
  • Outer prepositions change its case: دونَ المستوى, but من دونِ إذن and إلى دونِ الصفر.
  • Learn formal units such as حال دون, دون غيره, and دون المساس بـ rather than translating English word by word.
