Managing Turns in Formal Discussion

Taking a turn is a social action, not merely a matter of producing a grammatical sentence. In a formal meeting, seminar, interview, or panel, اسمح لي “allow me,” إذا سمحت “if you please,” and أود أن أضيف “I would like to add” announce how the speaker intends to enter the discussion. They acknowledge that someone else may currently hold the floor.

English speakers sometimes rely on intonation and a quick “sorry” before speaking. Formal Modern Standard Arabic more often makes the relationship explicit: a title can recognize rank, a conditional formula reduces the claim on the floor, and a short statement of purpose tells the group whether the speaker is adding, correcting, or asking. These strategies belong to planned (formal/cross-regional) MSA. Unscripted local discussion is normally dialectal (regional), with different turn-taking particles and pronunciations.

The request frames used below are treated more broadly in Requests and Softening; here the question is specifically who holds the conversational floor.

Asking to enter the floor

اسمح لي أن... addresses one man; اسمحي لي أن... addresses one woman. The imperative is not functioning as a blunt command here. It is part of a conventional permission request, completed by لي “to me” and أنْ + subjunctive. A title makes the relationship visible when the setting calls for it.

اسمح لي أن أعلق على هذه النقطة يا دكتور سامي.

ismaḥ lī ʾan ʾuʿalliqa ʿalā hādhihi n-nuqṭati yā duktūra sāmī.

Allow me to comment on this point, Dr. Sami. (Addressing one man formally.)

اسمحي لي أن أوضح الاعتراض يا دكتورة ليلى.

ismaḥī lī ʾan ʾuwaḍḍiḥa l-iʿtirāḍa yā duktūrata laylā.

Allow me to clarify the objection, Dr. Layla. (Addressing one woman formally.)

The shorter إذا سمحت is literally “if you permitted,” but its force here is conventional: “if I may / excuse me.” In unvocalized writing, the masculine سمحتَ and feminine سمحتِ look identical. The surrounding address or a following gender-marked form must carry the distinction. لو سمحت is also widely understood, but in spontaneous speech it is especially common in regional varieties (regional/less formal); إذا سمحت is a dependable formal-MSA choice.

إذا سمحت يا أستاذة نوال، لدي سؤال قصير عن الأرقام.

ʾidhā samaḥti yā ʾustādhata nawāl, ladayya suʾālun qaṣīrun ʿani l-ʾarqām.

If I may, Ms. Nawal, I have a brief question about the figures. (Addressing one woman.)

💡
A good floor-entry formula names a limited action—سؤال قصير “a brief question,” تعليق “a comment,” or توضيح “a clarification.” This reassures the current speaker that you are requesting a turn, not seizing control of the meeting.

Adding without framing the move as permission

أود أن أضيف... “I would like to add...” is useful when the chair has recognized you or when there is a natural pause. It is courteous but does not itself ask the current speaker to stop. That distinction matters: a perfectly grammatical أود أن أضيف spoken over someone’s unfinished sentence can still sound intrusive.

أود أن أضيف أن الجدول المقترح لا يشمل مرحلة الاختبار.

ʾawaddu ʾan ʾuḍīfa ʾanna l-jadwala l-muqtaraḥa lā yashmalu marḥalata l-ikhtibār.

I would like to add that the proposed schedule does not include the testing stage. (Formal discussion.)

لدي ملاحظة صغيرة هنا: قد نحتاج إلى مصدر ثان للبيانات.

ladayya mulāḥaẓatun ṣaghīratun hunā: qad naḥtāju ʾilā maṣdarin thānin li-l-bayānāt.

I have one small observation here: we may need a second data source. (Less ceremonious, still suitable for a professional meeting.)

The second alternative is less formulaic. It works well among colleagues because صغيرة limits the projected turn and قد presents the proposal cautiously. Neither sentence is automatically polite in every context: timing, volume, and whether the chair has allocated the floor remain part of the action.

Interrupting to prevent a real problem

Sometimes an interruption is necessary: a factual error could mislead the room, a speaker is inaudible, or the discussion has moved past a point that must be resolved. عذرا على المقاطعة explicitly recognizes the intrusion. Follow it with the reason rather than with a bare contradiction.

عذرا على المقاطعة، لكن الرقم الظاهر في الشريحة يعود إلى العام الماضي.

ʿudhran ʿalā l-muqāṭaʿa(h), lākinna r-raqma ẓ-ẓāhira fī sh-sharīḥati yaʿūdu ʾilā l-ʿāmi l-māḍī.

Sorry to interrupt, but the figure shown on the slide is from last year. (Necessary factual correction.)

المعذرة يا أستاذ فؤاد، الصوت غير واضح. هل يمكنك إعادة الجملة الأخيرة؟

al-maʿdhira(h) yā ʾustādha fuʾād, aṣ-ṣawtu ghayru wāḍiḥ. hal yumkinuka ʾiʿādatu l-jumlati l-ʾakhīra(h)?

Excuse me, Mr. Fuad; the audio is unclear. Could you repeat the last sentence? (Polite repair addressed to one man.)

عفوا can introduce a very minor interruption (neutral), but it is easily confused with the response “you’re welcome.” In a consequential meeting, the fuller reason-bearing formula is clearer.

Holding and yielding the floor

The current speaker may need to protect an unfinished turn. دعني أكمل الفكرة “let me finish the idea” is direct; adding a title or من فضلك calibrates it. To a woman, use دعيني. A chair can instead manage the sequence impersonally by promising the next turn.

دعيني أكمل الفكرة من فضلك، ثم أجيب عن سؤالك.

daʿīnī ʾukmili l-fikrata min faḍliki, thumma ʾujību ʿan suʾālik.

Please let me finish the point, and then I will answer your question. (Addressing one woman.)

سأعود إليك يا أستاذ كريم بعد أن تنتهي المتحدثة من عرض المثال.

sa-ʾaʿūdu ʾilayka yā ʾustādha karīm baʿda ʾan tantahiya l-mutaḥaddithatu min ʿarḍi l-mithāl.

I will come back to you, Mr. Karim, after the speaker finishes presenting the example. (Chair managing the queue.)

Yielding can be explicit: تفضل to a man and تفضلي to a woman invite the other person to proceed. These forms are conventional permissions, not literal invitations to “favor” someone.

شكرا، انتهيت من هذه النقطة. تفضلي يا دكتورة هدى.

shukran, intahaytu min hādhihi n-nuqṭa(h). tafaḍḍalī yā duktūrata hudā.

Thank you; I have finished this point. Please go ahead, Dr. Huda. (Yielding to one woman.)

A short formal exchange

عذرا يا دكتور مازن، أود أن أطلب توضيحا. — اسمح لي أن أنهي هذه الفقرة أولا، ثم تفضل بسؤالك. — بالطبع، تفضل. — شكرا، انتهيت الآن.

ʿudhran yā duktūra māzin, ʾawaddu ʾan ʾaṭluba tawḍīḥan. — ismaḥ lī ʾan ʾunhiya hādhihi l-fiqrata ʾawwalan, thumma tafaḍḍal bi-suʾālik. — bi-ṭ-ṭabʿ, tafaḍḍal. — shukran, intahaytu l-ʾān.

Excuse me, Dr. Mazen; I would like to ask for clarification. — Let me finish this paragraph first, then please ask your question. — Of course, go ahead. — Thank you; I am finished now.

The refusal is limited, reasoned, and immediately offers the questioner a place in the sequence. A flat لا تقاطعني “do not interrupt me” may be justified in hostile or repeated interruption, but it is a much stronger face-threatening act.

Repairing what you meant

A turn can fail even after it has been obtained. أقصد... corrects wording; ربما لم أوضح مقصدي accepts responsibility for ambiguity; دعني أصغ ذلك بطريقة أخرى announces reformulation (formal). These are often socially easier than telling the listener that they misunderstood.

ربما لم أوضح مقصدي؛ لا أعترض على الهدف، بل على موعد التنفيذ.

rubbamā lam ʾuwaḍḍiḥ maqṣidī; lā ʾaʿtariḍu ʿalā l-hadaf, bal ʿalā mawʿidi t-tanfīdh.

Perhaps I did not make my point clear: I object not to the goal, but to the implementation date. (Polite self-repair.)

💡
“You misunderstood me” places the failure on the listener. ربما لم أوضح مقصدي performs the same repair while taking partial responsibility, which is often more effective in disagreement.

Common Mistakes

Treating “please” as a complete bid for the floor

❌ من فضلك يا دكتور.

Incomplete—the phrase softens an unstated request but does not say whether the speaker wants to ask, add, or correct something.

✅ من فضلك يا دكتور عادل، هل تسمح لي بسؤال قصير؟

min faḍlika yā duktūra ʿādil, hal tasmaḥu lī bi-suʾālin qaṣīr?

Excuse me, Dr. Adel; may I ask a brief question?

Stacking bare imperatives at the chair

❌ توقف، اسمعني، أعطني دقيقة.

Wrong turn design for an ordinary formal discussion—the commands seize control instead of requesting it.

✅ عذرا يا أستاذ، هل تسمح لي بدقيقة لتوضيح هذه النقطة؟

ʿudhran yā ʾustādh, hal tasmaḥu lī bi-daqīqatin li-tawḍīḥi hādhihi n-nuqṭa(h)?

Excuse me, sir; may I have a minute to clarify this point?

Omitting an expected title in a high-distance exchange

❌ يا سعاد، دعيني أتكلم.

Wrong relationship marking when a student is addressing Professor Suad for the first time; the bare demand compounds the problem.

✅ يا دكتورة سعاد، اسمحي لي أن أشرح وجهة نظري.

yā duktūrata suʿād, ismaḥī lī ʾan ʾashraḥa wijhata naẓarī.

Dr. Suad, allow me to explain my point of view.

Mismatching the addressee’s gender

❌ اسمح لي يا دكتورة ليلى أن أجيب.

Incorrect—the masculine imperative ismaḥ conflicts with the feminine title.

✅ اسمحي لي يا دكتورة ليلى أن أجيب عن السؤال.

ismaḥī lī yā duktūrata laylā ʾan ʾujība ʿani s-suʾāl.

Allow me to answer the question, Dr. Layla.

Using a yielding formula to suppress the other speaker

❌ تفضل، لكن لا تتكلم الآن.

Contradictory force—tafaḍḍal yields the floor, while the following clause withdraws it.

✅ سأعطيك الكلمة بعد هذا العرض يا أستاذ نبيل.

sa-ʾuʿṭīka l-kalimata baʿda hādhā l-ʿarḍi yā ʾustādha nabīl.

I will give you the floor after this presentation, Mr. Nabil.

Key Takeaways

  • اسمح/اسمحي لي requests permission and visibly agrees with the addressee; أود أن أضيف states the speaker’s intended contribution.
  • عذرا على المقاطعة acknowledges a real interruption; a concise reason makes the intervention accountable.
  • Floor holding can be polite: limit the delay and promise when the other speaker will be heard.
  • تفضل/تفضلي yields the turn and must match the addressee.
  • Grammatical wording can still be abrupt when timing, title, gender, or audience relationship is wrong.
