Plurals of Paucity and Abundance

Traditional Arabic morphology distinguishes plurals of paucity (جموع القلة) from plurals of abundance (جموع الكثرة). The traditional semantic association is roughly three through ten for paucity and more than ten for abundance. That history helps explain why some nouns have more than one plural, but it is not a dependable counting machine in contemporary Modern Standard Arabic. This is a different system from collective and unit nouns, where two related forms contrast an undivided kind with one member.

The honest difficulty is lexical: modern speakers learn قلم → أقلام and رسالة → رسائل as word forms, not by calculating the intended quantity. A form historically classified as a paucity plural can serve as the ordinary unbounded plural, and competing plurals often develop different meanings or collocations.

The four traditional paucity patterns

Classical grammarians identify four principal broken-plural templates as paucity patterns. The labels remain useful in formal morphological analysis (academic).

PatternExampleSingularModern meaning
أَفْعِلَة ʾafʿilaأَرْغِفَة ʾarghifaرَغِيف raghīfloaves
أَفْعُل ʾafʿulأَشْهُر ʾashhurشَهْر shahrmonths
أَفْعَال ʾafʿālأَقْلَام ʾaqlāmقَلَم qalampens
فِعْلَة fiʿlaفِتْيَة fityaفَتًى fatāyoung men

The pattern classification does not replace a dictionary. Not every singular can enter all four templates, and analogy cannot reliably predict which established plural a noun has. أقلام is simply the normal plural of قلم in present-day MSA, whether three pens or three thousand pens are meant.

على المكتب ثلاثة أقلام جديدة

ʿalā l-maktabi thalāthatu ʾaqlāmin jadīda(h)

There are three new pens on the desk.

وزعت المؤسسة آلاف الأقلام على المدارس

wazzaʿati l-muʾassasatu ʾālāfa l-ʾaqlāmi ʿalā l-madāris

The organization distributed thousands of pens to the schools.

Both sentences use أقلام. The first explicitly names a small number; the second explicitly names thousands. The numeral or quantifier supplies the actual amount, while the plural remains lexically stable.

💡
Treat “paucity” as the historical name of a morphological class, not as an instruction to reject the form above ten. In modern production, use the plural listed for the noun and let numerals or context express quantity.

Abundance patterns are numerous

Everything outside the four paucity templates is not one uniform form. Traditional grammar recognizes many abundance patterns, including فُعُول as in قُلُوب “hearts,” فِعَال as in رِجَال “men,” فَعَائِل as in رَسَائِل “messages,” and مَفَاعِل as in مَكَاتِب “offices/desks.” These templates interact with the singular stem and must be learned lexically.

وصلت رسالتان صباحا

waṣalat risālatāni ṣabāḥā

Two messages arrived in the morning.

وصلت ثلاث رسائل صباحا

waṣalat thalāthu rasāʾila ṣabāḥā

Three messages arrived in the morning.

وصلت مئات الرسائل خلال ساعة

waṣalat miʾātu r-rasāʾili khilāla sāʿa(h)

Hundreds of messages arrived within an hour.

رسائل belongs to an abundance pattern, yet it occurs naturally after three. This is normal contemporary usage. The pattern does not block a small-number interpretation.

Because the verb precedes its subject in all three examples, وصلت is feminine singular with both dual رسالتان and the plural phrases. In subject-first order, رسالتان would trigger feminine-dual verbal agreement, whereas nonhuman plural رسائل would still trigger feminine-singular agreement. Number morphology, referential agreement, and verb order are separate.

When one noun has competing plurals

Some nouns preserve a visible pair that historical grammar associates with paucity and abundance. A frequently taught example is شهر “month”: أشهر is the traditional paucity plural and شهور an abundance plural.

NumberFormTraditional description
oneشَهْرٌ shahrunsingular
two, nominativeشَهْرَانِ shahrānidual
pluralأَشْهُرٌ ʾashhurunplural of paucity
pluralشُهُورٌ shuhūrunplural of abundance

استمر التدريب ستة أشهر

istamarra t-tadrību sittata ʾashhur

The training lasted six months.

استمر المشروع عدة شهور

istamarra l-mashrūʿu ʿiddata shuhūr

The project lasted several months.

The first choice fits the traditional numerical association and is highly conventional. The second is also ordinary formal MSA. In real contemporary texts, أشهر and شهور overlap, and شهور is not prohibited with small numbers. Frequency, collocation, and regional editorial preference can affect the choice without changing the MSA baseline.

Other competing plurals have undergone stronger lexical specialization. أوجه and وجوه, both related to وجه, often divide into “aspects/facets” and “faces,” while أنفس and نفوس, related to نفس, participate in different meanings such as “selves/persons” and “souls/populations.” Calling one “few” and the other “many” would miss the modern lexical contrast.

💡
When a dictionary lists two plurals, check each plural's definition and examples. The useful question is often “Which meaning and collocations does this form have?” rather than “How many does it denote?”

ناقش التقرير أوجه المشكلة الرئيسية بوضوح

nāqasha t-taqrīru ʾawjuha l-mushkilati r-raʾīsiyyata bi-wuḍūḥ

The report clearly discussed the main aspects of the problem.

ظهرت وجوه مألوفة في الاجتماع

ẓaharat wujūhun maʾlūfatun fī l-ijtimāʿ

Familiar faces appeared at the meeting.

Both plurals are nonhuman in grammatical agreement in these uses, so the adjective is feminine singular: الرئيسية and مألوفة. The semantic referent of وجوه is body parts, even though the faces belong to people.

Numerals three through ten

The historical paucity association is easiest to understand beside numeral syntax. With three through ten, the counted noun is plural and genitive. The numeral shows gender polarity against the singular noun: masculine قلم takes ثلاثة, while feminine رسالة takes ثلاث.

قرأت ثلاثة كتب هذا الأسبوع

qaraʾtu thalāthata kutubin hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ

I read three books this week.

أرسلت ثلاث رسائل إلى الفريق

ʾarsaltu thalātha rasāʾila ʾilā l-farīq

I sent three messages to the team.

The genitive ending of كتبٍ is kasra plus tanwīn. رسائلَ is also genitive, but it belongs to a diptote pattern and therefore shows fatḥa without tanwīn while indefinite. This difference is declension, not paucity versus abundance. Numerals eleven and above follow other constructions and must not be forced into this three-to-ten pattern.

Human agreement is independent of the pattern

The paucity pattern فِعْلَة can denote rational humans. Such a noun takes human plural agreement in adjectives and subject-first predicates, unlike nonhuman plurals on the other patterns. A preceding verb with an overt human plural subject is nevertheless normally singular.

هؤلاء فتية مجتهدون

hāʾulāʾi fityatun mujtahidūn

These are hardworking young men.

هذه أرغفة طازجة

hādhihi ʾarghifatun ṭāzaja(h)

These loaves are fresh.

The visible template cannot tell you the agreement. فتية controls masculine-plural مجتهدون because it denotes male humans; أرغفة controls feminine-singular هذه ... طازجة because loaves are nonhuman.

Common Mistakes

Inferring an exact quantity from the pattern

❌ أقلام لا يمكن أن تعني ألف قلم

Incorrect — modern أقلام is the ordinary plural and can refer to a thousand pens.

✅ اشترت الشركة ألف قلم

ishtarati sh-sharikatu ʾalfa qalam

The company bought a thousand pens.

Manufacturing a second plural from a pattern

❌ كل اسم له جمع قلة يمكن توقعه

Incorrect — paucity plurals are lexically restricted and cannot be predicted for every noun.

✅ جمع كتاب هو كتب

jamʿu kitābin huwa kutub

The plural of كتاب is كتب.

Using a singular noun after three through ten

❌ قرأت ثلاثة كتاب

Incorrect — numerals three through ten take a genitive plural counted noun.

✅ قرأت ثلاثة كتب

qaraʾtu thalāthata kutub

I read three books.

Building two with a numeral plus a plural

❌ اثنان أشهر كافيان

Incorrect — exactly two normally uses the dual noun.

✅ شهران كافيان

shahrāni kāfiyān

Two months are enough.

Giving nonhuman plurals full plural agreement

❌ الأقلام الجدد غاليون

Incorrect — nonhuman plural أقلام requires feminine-singular agreement.

✅ الأقلام الجديدة غالية

al-ʾaqlāmu l-jadīdatu ghāliya(h)

The new pens are expensive.

Key Takeaways

  • Traditional grammar associates four paucity patterns with quantities from three through ten, but modern plural use is not mechanically governed by that range.
  • Abundance plurals occur naturally after small numerals, and paucity forms can denote very large quantities.
  • Competing plurals may overlap or develop separate lexical meanings; learn each plural with its noun and common contexts.
  • With three through ten, use a genitive plural noun and observe numeral gender polarity.
  • Declension class and human-versus-nonhuman agreement are independent of the paucity/abundance label.
