A complex iḍāfa places several nouns inside one uninterrupted chain, then places adjectives, coordinated phrases, or other modifiers after it. In تقرير لجنة المشروع الجديد, “new” could in principle describe the report, the committee, or the project. Arabic agreement eliminates some readings, but not always all of them—especially in ordinary unvocalized prose.
Scope is therefore a structural question, not a nearest-word reflex. Identify the chain, determine the case and agreement features of each possible head, and test a proposed reading by paraphrasing it. If two readings survive, the phrase is genuinely ambiguous. A skilled writer then rewrites it; punctuation or confidence cannot manufacture a distinction that the grammar fails to encode.
This page assumes only the head-first relation summarized on The Iḍāfa Construction and develops the diagnostics needed when several heads compete.
Establish the chain before attaching anything
In a basic two-word iḍāfa, the first noun is the construct head and the second is genitive. Nothing can intervene between them.
راجعت خطة الفريق المعدلة بعد الاجتماع.
rājaʿtu khuṭṭata l-farīqi l-muʿaddalata baʿda l-ijtimāʿ.
I reviewed the team's revised plan after the meeting.
The chain is خطةَ الفريقِ. Feminine accusative المعدلةَ can only modify head خطةَ; it follows الفريقِ because the two nouns must remain adjacent.
راجعت خطة الفريق الجديد قبل عرضها.
rājaʿtu khuṭṭata l-farīqi l-jadīdi qabla ʿarḍihā.
I reviewed the new team's plan before it was presented.
Masculine genitive الجديدِ modifies الفريقِ. The adjective's position is identical; its agreement changes the attachment.
[خطة الفريق] المعدلة. An adjective never gets to split the bracket merely to stand beside the noun it describes.Use all four agreement features
An Arabic adjective agrees with its target in gender, number, definiteness, and case. In an iḍāfa, gender and number often provide visible clues; case may add a clue in careful vocalization; definiteness distinguishes attribution from predication but often applies to several members at once.
| Diagnostic | Question | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| gender | Is the candidate masculine or feminine? | Several nouns may share gender. |
| number | Is it singular, dual, human plural, or nonhuman plural? | Nonhuman plurals usually trigger feminine-singular agreement. |
| case | Does the adjective match the first noun's external case or a later noun's genitive? | Short endings are normally absent from print and pause. |
| definiteness | Is the adjective attributive inside the phrase? | A definite final term makes the entire chain definite. |
نشرت المجلة صور فريق البحث الجديدة.
nasharati l-majallatu ṣuwara farīqi l-baḥthi l-jadīda(h).
The magazine published the research team's new photos.
Nonhuman plural صورَ takes feminine-singular الجديدةَ. The adjective cannot describe masculine فريقِ or البحثِ.
نشرت المجلة صور فريق البحث الجديد في عددها الأخير.
nasharati l-majallatu ṣuwara farīqi l-baḥthi l-jadīdi fī ʿadadihā l-ʾakhīr.
The magazine published photos of the new research team in its latest issue.
Masculine genitive الجديدِ might describe فريقِ or البحثِ. Meaning favors “new research team,” but agreement alone does not. The clearer صور الفريق البحثي الجديد turns “research” into adjective البحثي and removes one candidate head.
Case helps only when it is actually distinct
The first noun takes case from the larger clause, while all later nouns in the chain are genitive. A head-modifying adjective copies that external case.
صدر تقييم أداء الموظف الجديد أمس.
ṣadara taqyīmu ʾadāʾi l-muwaẓẓafi l-jadīdu ʾams.
The new evaluation of the employee's performance was issued yesterday.
Nominative الجديدُ points to subject head تقييمُ, not to genitive أداءِ or الموظفِ.
صدر تقييم أداء الموظف الجديد في التقرير السنوي.
ṣadara taqyīmu ʾadāʾi l-muwaẓẓafi l-jadīdi fī t-taqrīri s-sanawiyy.
The evaluation of the new employee's performance appeared in the annual report.
Genitive الجديدِ now attaches naturally to الموظفِ, but it formally shares case, gender, and number with أداءِ. Ordinary writing displays both examples as الجديد. When the intended distinction matters, write التقييم الجديد لأداء الموظف for “the new evaluation” or تقييم أداء الموظف الذي عُيّن حديثًا for “the newly appointed employee.”
Trace definiteness from the right edge
Final definiteness reaches left through the complete chain. An indefinite final noun leaves every larger phrase built on it indefinite.
اقترح خبير تطوير مناهج جديد ورشة للمعلمين.
ʾiqtaraḥa khabīru taṭwīri manāhija jadīdun warshatan li-l-muʿallimīn.
A new curriculum-development expert proposed a workshop for the teachers.
Final diptote مناهجَ is indefinite and genitive with fatḥa. The entire subject chain is indefinite, so head-modifying جديدٌ is indefinite. Its masculine nominative form points to خبيرُ.
اقترح خبير تطوير المناهج الجديد برنامجا تدريبيا.
ʾiqtaraḥa khabīru taṭwīri l-manāhiji l-jadīdu barnāmajan tadrībiyyā.
The new curriculum-development expert proposed a training program.
Final المناهجِ makes the subject definite; الجديدُ is therefore definite too. A bare-looking construct head is not automatically indefinite.
Longer chains create multiple semantic groupings
Consider برنامج تدريب معلمي المدارس. Right-edge construction gives معلمي المدارس “school teachers,” then تدريب معلمي المدارس “training school teachers/the training of school teachers,” then برنامج تدريب معلمي المدارس “a program for training school teachers.” This reading is natural, but a context could invite other lexical groupings.
بدأ برنامج تدريب معلمي المدارس الريفية هذا الأسبوع.
badaʾa barnāmaju tadrībi muʿallimī l-madārisi r-rīfiyyati hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.
The program for training teachers at rural schools began this week.
Feminine genitive الريفيةِ modifies nonhuman plural المدارسِ, not human plural معلمي. The sound-masculine-plural construct معلمي has lost its nūn before المدارس.
بدأ برنامج تدريب معلمي المدارس الجديد في سبتمبر.
badaʾa barnāmaju tadrībi muʿallimī l-madārisi l-jadīdu fī sibtambar.
The new program for training school teachers began in September.
Nominative الجديدُ points back to subject برنامجُ. In ordinary print, a reader uses gender and meaning; the case ending in formal connection confirms the analysis.
Coordination can widen or narrow scope
A conjunction may coordinate entire noun phrases, two complements of one head, or two adjectives. Do not assume that everything after و belongs at the same structural level.
راجعت تقارير اللجنة ومقترحاتها الجديدة.
rājaʿtu taqārīra l-lajnati wa-muqtaraḥātihā l-jadīda(h).
I reviewed the committee's reports and its new proposals.
The suffix ـها closes the second noun phrase. Feminine-singular الجديدةَ follows the coordinated sequence but agrees specifically with nonhuman plural مقترحاتِها, not necessarily with تقارير اللجنة.
عينت المؤسسة مدير البحث والتطوير في فرعها الجديد.
ʿayyanati l-muʾassasatu mudīra l-baḥthi wa-t-taṭwīri fī farʿihā l-jadīd.
The organization appointed the director of research and development in its new branch.
Here البحثِ والتطويرِ are coordinated genitive complements under one head مديرَ. If the institution has a single conventional department called “Research and Development,” the phrase is clear from context. If two separate directorates are intended, repeat the head: مدير البحث ومدير التطوير.
Paraphrase is a diagnostic, not merely a repair
Test a candidate attachment by rewriting the phrase so the intended modifier sits in a structure with only one target:
- لـ: القرار الجديد لمجلس الإدارة makes “new” modify “decision.”
- a relative clause: قرار مجلس الإدارة الذي صدر حديثًا identifies the recently issued decision.
- an adjectival nisba: فريق البحث الطبي can reduce a noun-chain boundary where “medical research” is intended.
- repetition: مدير قسم التدريب ومدير قسم الجودة makes two offices explicit.
اعتمدت الإدارة النسخة الجديدة من دليل إجراءات السلامة.
ʾiʿtamadati l-ʾidāratu n-nuskhata l-jadīdata min dalīli ʾijrāʾāti s-salāma(h).
The administration approved the new version of the safety-procedures guide.
Using من detaches النسخة الجديدة from the following chain. The more compressed نسخة دليل إجراءات السلامة الجديدة would give الجديدة several plausible feminine targets.
Common Mistakes
Inserting an adjective inside the chain
❌ راجعت خطة الجديدة فريق التسويق.
Incorrect — the adjective cannot separate a construct head from its complement.
✅ راجعت الخطة الجديدة لفريق التسويق.
rājaʿtu l-khuṭṭata l-jadīdata li-farīqi t-taswīq.
I reviewed the new plan for the marketing team.
Choosing the nearest noun despite mismatched agreement
❌ نشرت صور مدير الفرع الجديد.
Incorrect for “the manager's new photos” — masculine الجديد points to a masculine noun, not nonhuman plural صور.
✅ نشرت الصحيفة صور مدير الفرع الجديدة على موقعها.
nasharati ṣ-ṣaḥīfatu ṣuwara mudīri l-farʿi l-jadīdata ʿalā mawqiʿihā.
The newspaper published the branch manager's new photos on its website.
Assuming case removes every ambiguity
❌ تقرير مدير القسم الجديد واضح تماما.
Ambiguous — genitive الجديد could modify either masculine genitive مدير or قسم.
✅ تقرير المدير الجديد للقسم واضح تماما.
taqrīru l-mudīri l-jadīdi li-l-qismi wāḍiḥun tamāmā.
The new department manager's report is completely clear.
Leaving nūn on a construct plural inside a chain
❌ بدأ تدريب معلمون المدارس الريفية.
Incorrect — sound-masculine-plural nūn is deleted when معلمو becomes a construct head.
✅ بدأ تدريب معلمي المدارس الريفية في المركز.
badaʾa tadrību muʿallimī l-madārisi r-rīfiyyati fī l-markaz.
The training of teachers at rural schools began at the center.
Trying to repair structure with a comma
❌ اعتمدنا نسخة دليل المشروع، الجديدة.
Incorrect strategy — a comma does not force الجديدة to modify نسخة.
✅ اعتمدنا النسخة الجديدة من دليل المشروع.
ʾiʿtamadnā n-nuskhata l-jadīdata min dalīli l-mashrūʿ.
We approved the new version of the project guide.
Key Takeaways
- Complete and bracket the iḍāfa before attaching adjectives or coordination.
- Test gender, number, definiteness, and case against every possible head.
- Nearest-noun attachment is not an Arabic rule, and hidden case endings cannot always disambiguate print.
- Decide what a conjunction coordinates; repeat a head when two offices or relations are intended.
- Use لـ, من, relative clauses, adjectival forms, or repetition to test and clarify scope.
