Modern Standard Arabic does not package every kind of “liking” in the same way. With أحبّ, the person who likes something is the subject and the liked thing is a direct object. With يعجبني, the thing that makes a good impression is the grammatical subject and the experiencer appears as an object suffix. Wanting uses أريد with a noun but normally أريد أن + subjunctive imperfect with an action.
These are productive grammatical frames, not three interchangeable translations of English like and want. Fluency comes from keeping the fixed part of each frame stable while changing the person, thing, or action in its variable slot.
The working frames
| Meaning | Fixed frame | Variable slot | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| like or love a thing/person | أحبّ + direct object | القهوة، هذا الكتاب، صديقي | neutral formal |
| like doing an action | أحبّ أن + subjunctive | أقرأ، أسافر، أعمل | neutral formal |
| find something pleasing | يعجب + object suffix | subject: الأسلوب، الفكرة | neutral formal |
| want a thing | أريد + direct object | نسخة، موعدا، بعض الوقت | neutral formal |
| want to act | أريد أن + subjunctive | أفهم، نبدأ، ترسلي | neutral formal |
The direct object is accusative when its ending is pronounced. A following preposition assigns genitive case instead. The particle أنْ governs the subjunctive imperfect: sound singular أقرأُ becomes أن أقرأَ, while feminine-singular ترسلين loses its mood nūn in أن ترسلي. The full inflectional pattern appears on the subjunctive imperfect page.
أحبّ: the liker is the subject
In أحبّ القهوة, the understood “I” is the subject of أحبّ, and القهوة is its object. The verb agrees with the liker: أحبّ، تحبّ، يحبّ، نحبّ. It covers affection for people, preference for things, and enjoyment of activities. Context decides whether English uses like or the stronger love.
أحب القهوة من دون سكر
ʾuḥibbu l-qahwata min dūni sukkar
I like coffee without sugar. (Neutral formal.)
تحب ليلى عملها، لكنها تحتاج إلى إجازة
tuḥibbu laylā ʿamalahā, lakinnahā taḥtāju ʾilā ʾijāza
Layla loves her work, but she needs a vacation. (Neutral formal.)
With an action, أنْ turns a finite verb into a clause that fills the object slot. Arabic does not use an English-style infinitive: the subordinate verb still marks its own subject.
نحب أن نمشي قرب البحر عند الغروب
nuḥibbu ʾan namshiya qurba l-baḥri ʿinda l-ghurūb
We like to walk by the sea at sunset. (Neutral formal.)
أحب أن تقرئي الرسالة قبل أن ترسليها
ʾuḥibbu ʾan taqraʾī r-risālata qabla ʾan tursilīhā
I'd like you to read the message before you send it. (Addressed to one woman; polite in context.)
The second sentence has different subjects: “I” experiences the preference, but “you” perform the reading and sending. That is why the subordinate verbs carry feminine-singular agreement.
يعجبني: the pleasing thing is the subject
أعجب / يعجب means “please, make a favorable impression.” In يعجبني الأسلوب, الأسلوب is the subject and ـني “me” is the experiencer. English reverses the perspective and says “I like the style.” The verb therefore agrees with the liked thing, not with the person who likes it.
يعجبني تصميم الموقع الجديد
yuʿjibunī taṣmīmu l-mawqiʿi l-jadīd
I like the design of the new website. (Literally, ‘the design pleases me.’)
تعجبني هذه الفكرة، لكن تنفيذها مكلف
tuʿjibunī hādhihi l-fikratu, lakinna tanfīdhahā mukallif
I like this idea, but implementing it is expensive. (The feminine subject controls تعجب.)
Change only the suffix to change the experiencer: يعجبني “I like it,” يعجبك “you like it,” يعجبها “she likes it,” يعجبنا “we like it.” A feminine liked subject still gives تعجبها. This frame is especially natural for an opinion or immediate reaction; أحبّ more readily expresses an established preference or affection.
أريد: a noun or an أن-clause
Use أريد + direct object for a wanted thing and أريد أن + subjunctive for a wanted event. Two frequent collocations with the same head are أريد نسخة “I want a copy” and أريد أن أفهم “I want to understand.” The pattern can also identify whose action is wanted.
أريد نسخة من التقرير النهائي
ʾurīdu nuskhatan mina t-taqrīri n-nihāʾiyy
I want a copy of the final report. (Neutral formal.)
نريد أن نبدأ الاجتماع في موعده
nurīdu ʾan nabdaʾa l-ijtimāʿa fī mawʿidih
We want to start the meeting on time. (Neutral formal.)
أريد منك أن ترسلي النسخة المصححة اليوم
ʾurīdu minki ʾan tursilī n-nuskhata l-muṣaḥḥaḥata l-yawm
I want you to send the corrected copy today. (Addressed to one woman; direct and potentially forceful.)
أريد منك أن... explicitly marks the person expected to act with من. In a workplace it can sound like an instruction, not a gentle wish. أرجو أن... “I hope/request that...” or a direct polite request may fit better when hierarchy and face matter.

أرغب في + noun/maṣdar is common in applications and formal correspondence: أرغب في المشاركة “I wish to participate.” It is more formal than ordinary أريد أن أشارك, but it should not replace every everyday want. أودّ أن is a courteous formal “I would like to.” Spoken varieties have forms such as Egyptian عايز or Levantine بدّي (regional/informal); they are valuable in their own settings but are not unlabeled MSA.
أود أن أعرف إن كان الموعد ما زال متاحا
ʾawaddu ʾan ʾaʿrifa ʾin kāna l-mawʿidu mā zāla mutāḥan
I would like to know whether the appointment is still available. (Courteous formal.)
قالت سلمى: يعجبني المكان، وأريد أن أعود إليه غدا
qālat salmā: yuʿjibunī l-makānu, wa-ʾurīdu ʾan ʾaʿūda ʾilayhi ghadan
Salma said, ‘I like the place, and I want to come back tomorrow.’ (Formal dialogue.)
Common Mistakes
Making يعجبني take the English object pattern
❌ أنا يعجب الفكرة
Incorrect—the liked thing is the subject of يعجب, and the experiencer is an attached object suffix.
✅ تعجبني الفكرة، ولا سيما الجزء العملي منها
tuʿjibunī l-fikratu, wa-lā siyyamā l-juzʾu l-ʿamaliyyu minhā
I like the idea, especially its practical part.
Copying English “want for”
❌ أريد لنسخة من العقد
Incorrect—the wanted noun is a direct object; English ‘want for’ does not supply an Arabic preposition.
✅ أريد نسخة من العقد قبل أن أوقعه
ʾurīdu nuskhatan mina l-ʿaqdi qabla ʾan ʾuwaqqiʿahu
I want a copy of the contract before I sign it.
Replacing an أن-clause with an indicative verb
❌ أريد أن أذهب إلى المكتبة
ʾurīdu ʾan ʾadhhabu ʾilā l-maktaba
Incorrect pronunciation—أنْ governs subjunctive ʾadhhaba, not indicative ʾadhhabu.
✅ أريد أن أذهب إلى المكتبة بعد العمل
ʾurīdu ʾan ʾadhhaba ʾilā l-maktabati baʿda l-ʿamal
I want to go to the library after work.
Substituting a near-synonym without its frame
❌ أميل أن أشارك في الدورة هذا العام
Incorrect for ‘I am inclined to participate’—مال in this sense governs إلى before a noun, maṣdar, or أن-clause.
✅ أميل إلى المشاركة في الدورة القادمة
ʾamīlu ʾilā l-mushārakati fī d-dawrati l-qādima
I am inclined to participate in the next course. (Formal.)
Leaving a regional form unlabeled
أنا عايز أغير الموعد
ʾanā ʿāyiz ʾaghayyir il-mawʿid
I want to change the appointment. (regional: Egypt; informal—not neutral MSA.)
✅ أريد أن أغير الموعد
ʾurīdu ʾan ʾughayyira l-mawʿid
I want to change the appointment. (Formal MSA.)
Key Takeaways

- In يعجبني, the pleasing thing is the subject and ـني is the experiencer.
- أريد takes a noun directly, but an action normally appears in أنْ + subjunctive.
- Keep formal أرغب في and courteous أودّ أن in their own frames and label regional forms.
