أخذ Collocations

Arabic أخذ is much more than a one-word match for English take. Its complement determines whether it means physically take something, consume medicine, collect a sample, begin an action, follow an opinion, or enter a fixed expression such as “take into consideration.” The forms are related historically, but a learner cannot freely carry an English take collocation into Arabic.

The verified principal parts are أَخَذَ — يَأْخُذُ — أَخْذًا (Form I, root ء-خ-ذ), with imperative خُذْ. The initial hamza remains important in the past and imperfect; the short imperative is genuinely irregular-looking and must be learned rather than reconstructed as أخذ.

The full high-frequency verb reference compares these forms with another irregular verb on أكل and أخذ.

Map the complement before choosing a meaning

FrameCore meaningProductive or fixed partnersRegister
أخذ + direct objecttake, receive, consume, collectالكتاب، الدواء، عينة، نفساneutral MSA
أخذ + imperfectbegin and continue doingأخذ يتكلم، أخذ المطر يشتدformal narrative, literary
أخذ في + verbal nounset about an activityأخذ في الشرح، أخذ في البحثformal/literary
أخذ بـ + nounadopt, heed, applyأخذ برأي، أخذ بمبدأformal, especially legal/analytical
fixed phrasemeaning belongs to the whole partnershipأخذ في الاعتبار، أخذ على عاتقه، أخذ على محمل الجدformal to administrative

The table is a substitution guide, not permission to combine every noun with every frame. أخذ عينة is an established direct-object partnership; أخذ بمبدأ needs بـ; and inchoative أخذ يتكلم needs a following imperfect. The complement is part of the lexical choice.

Direct objects: taking, consuming, and collecting

With a concrete direct object, أخذ often retains the broad idea of taking something into one's possession or control.

أخذت ليلى الملف من المكتب وأعادته بعد الاجتماع

ʾakhadhat laylā l-milaffa mina l-maktabi wa-ʾaʿādathu baʿda l-ijtimāʿ

Layla took the file from the office and returned it after the meeting.

Established partnerships extend that direct-object pattern. Medicine is something a patient takes, a technician takes/collects a sample, and a person takes a breath. These are natural collocations, not three new grammatical structures.

أخذ المريض الدواء بعد الطعام كما أوصى الطبيب

ʾakhadha l-marīḍu d-dawāʾa baʿda ṭ-ṭaʿāmi kamā ʾawṣā ṭ-ṭabīb

The patient took the medicine after eating, as the doctor advised.

أخذ الفني عينة دم وأرسلها إلى المختبر

ʾakhadha l-fanniyyu ʿayyinata damin wa-ʾarsalahā ʾilā l-mukhtabar

The technician collected a blood sample and sent it to the laboratory.

أخذت نفسا عميقا قبل أن تبدأ العرض

ʾakhadhat nafasan ʿamīqan qabla ʾan tabdaʾa l-ʿarḍ

She took a deep breath before starting the presentation.

English also says take a shower, take a walk, and take a picture. Arabic normally selects other verbs—استحمّ، تمشّى، التقط صورة—rather than extending أخذ mechanically. This is the honest limit of a productive verb: its ordinary meaning is broad, but its conventional noun partners are language-specific.

💡
When English uses take, ask what event actually occurs. Arabic may choose أخذ for possession, medicine, a sample, or a breath, but a more specific lexical verb for many other English collocations.

أخذ + imperfect: entering an activity

In formal narrative and literary prose, أخذ + imperfect is an inchoative frame: the subject starts an activity and then continues in it. The subject of أخذ is also understood as the subject of the following imperfect.

أخذ الجمهور يتوافد إلى القاعة قبل بدء المحاضرة

ʾakhadha l-jumhūru yatawāfadu ʾilā l-qāʿati qabla badʾi l-muḥāḍara(h)

The audience began streaming into the hall before the lecture started. (formal narrative)

أخذ الطفل يبكي عندما غادرت أمه الغرفة

ʾakhadha ṭ-ṭiflu yabkī ʿindamā ghādarat ʾummuhu l-ghurfa(h)

The child began to cry when his mother left the room. (formal narrative)

The following imperfect is not introduced by أن. It presents the activity unfolding from its onset. Neutral contemporary exposition often uses بدأ + verbal noun or بدأ + imperfect instead; أخذ + imperfect adds a narrative sense of getting under way.

The related frame أخذ في + verbal noun also means “set about, begin,” with the event packaged as a noun after في.

أخذ المحاضر في شرح النتائج فور ظهور الرسم البياني

ʾakhadha l-muḥāḍiru fī sharḥi n-natāʾiji fawra ẓuhūri r-rasmi l-bayāniyy

The lecturer began explaining the results as soon as the chart appeared. (formal/literary)

Do not collapse this into literal taking. No object changes possession; أخذ contributes onset and the following predicate supplies the event.

أخذ بـ: heeding or adopting

With بـ, formal أخذ can mean “heed, adopt, apply, act on.” The object is normally an opinion, principle, method, or interpretation—not a physical object.

أخذ الفريق برأي الخبير وعدل خطة السلامة

ʾakhadha l-farīqu biraʾyi l-khabīri waʿaddala khuṭṭata s-salāma(h)

The team heeded the expert's advice and revised the safety plan. (formal)

أخذت المحكمة بمبدأ المساواة أمام القانون

ʾakhadhati l-maḥkamatu bimabdaʾi l-musāwāti ʾamāma l-qānūn

The court adopted the principle of equality before the law. (formal/legal)

This does not make أخذ the usual verb for every English adopt. Arabic normally says اتخذ قرارا “made/adopted a decision,” اتخذ موقفا “adopted a position,” and تبنى سياسة “adopted a policy.” أخذ بـ is strongest where the sense is following or giving effect to an authority, opinion, or principle.

Fixed partnerships whose meaning is larger than take

Some frequent expressions must be learned as complete units. Their internal prepositions cannot be predicted from English.

أخذت اللجنة التكاليف الإضافية في الاعتبار قبل الموافقة على المقترح

ʾakhadhati l-lajnatu t-takālīfa l-ʾiḍāfiyyata fī l-iʿtibāri qabla l-muwāfaqati ʿalā l-muqtaraḥ

The committee took the additional costs into account before approving the proposal. (formal)

أخذت المديرة على عاتقها مسؤولية تدريب الموظفين الجدد

ʾakhadhati l-mudīratu ʿalā ʿātiqihā masʾūliyyata tadrībi l-muwaẓẓafīna l-judud

The director took responsibility for training the new employees. (literally, ‘took onto her shoulders’)

لم يأخذ المسؤول التحذير على محمل الجد إلا بعد وقوع الحادث

lam yaʾkhudhi l-masʾūlu t-taḥdhīra ʿalā maḥmali l-jiddi ʾillā baʿda wuqūʿi l-ḥādith

The official did not take the warning seriously until after the accident. (nonliteral fixed expression)

في الاعتبار, على عاتقه, and على محمل الجد are not freely interchangeable prepositional decorations. Each phrase contributes a distinct conventional meaning: consideration, assumed responsibility, and seriousness.

💡
Store a fixed phrase with its prepositions and its typical objects. Replacing one preposition because English uses in or on often destroys the Arabic collocation.

Choosing among أخذ، اتخذ، تناول، and بدأ

Near-synonyms divide the semantic territory. تناول الدواء “take medicine” is a precise, common alternative to أخذ الدواء, especially in medical instructions. اتخذ is the established verb with decisions, measures, and positions. بدأ is the neutral cross-register verb for beginning. أخذ remains natural in its attested partnerships and adds its own narrative or formal coloration.

اتخذت الشركة إجراءات عاجلة لحماية بيانات العملاء

ittakhadhati sh-sharikatu ʾijrāʾātin ʿājilatan liḥimāyati bayānāti l-ʿumalāʾ

The company took urgent measures to protect customer data. (established اتخذ collocation)

بدأ الباحث يراجع أقدم المراجع

badaʾa l-bāḥithu yurājiʿu ʾaqdama l-marājiʿ

The researcher began by reviewing the oldest references. (neutral contemporary alternative)

Common Mistakes

Copying an English take collocation

❌ أخذت صورة للغروب بهاتفي

Understandable English transfer; standard MSA normally uses التقط صورة for ‘take a photograph.’

✅ التقطت صورة للغروب بهاتفي

iltaqaṭtu ṣūratan lil-ghurūbi bihātifī

I took a photograph of the sunset with my phone.

Using أخذ with the wrong decision noun

❌ أخذ المجلس قرارا بتأجيل التصويت

Broken formal collocation—use اتخذ with قرار.

✅ اتخذ المجلس قرارا بتأجيل التصويت

ittakhadha l-majlisu qarāran bitaʾjīli t-taṣwīt

The council decided to postpone the vote.

Inserting أن into the inchoative frame

❌ أخذ الجمهور أن يغادر القاعة

Incorrect frame—narrative أخذ is followed directly by an imperfect, without أن.

✅ أخذ الجمهور يغادر القاعة بهدوء

ʾakhadha l-jumhūru yughādiru l-qāʿata bihudūʾ

The audience began leaving the hall quietly. (formal narrative)

Dropping بـ in the adopt-or-heed sense

❌ أخذت اللجنة رأي المستشار وعدلت الخطة

Wrong object pattern for ‘heeded the adviser’s opinion’—this sense uses أخذ بـ.

✅ أخذت اللجنة برأي المستشار وعدلت الخطة

ʾakhadhati l-lajnatu biraʾyi l-mustashāri waʿaddalati l-khuṭṭa(h)

The committee followed the adviser's opinion and revised the plan.

Mixing the prepositions inside a fixed expression

❌ أخذ المدير الشكوى في محمل الجد

Incorrect blend—the fixed phrase is على محمل الجد.

✅ أخذ المدير الشكوى على محمل الجد ورد عليها في اليوم نفسه

ʾakhadha l-mudīru sh-shakwā ʿalā maḥmali l-jiddi waradda ʿalayhā fī l-yawmi nafsih

The director took the complaint seriously and replied to it the same day.

Leaving a literary onset unlabeled in conversational advice

❌ خذ تراجع حسابك كل صباح

Incorrect and register-confused—imperative خذ cannot simply introduce a habitual imperfect as an English-style ‘start.’

✅ ابدأ بمراجعة حسابك كل صباح

ibdaʾ bimurājaʿati ḥisābika kulla ṣabāḥ

Start by checking your account every morning. (neutral instruction)

Key Takeaways

  • Direct-object أخذ covers genuine taking plus established partners such as medicine, samples, and breaths—not every English take phrase.
  • أخذ + imperfect and أخذ في + verbal noun mark the onset of an activity in formal or literary narration.
  • أخذ بـ can mean “heed/adopt/apply,” especially with an opinion or principle; decisions and measures normally take اتخذ.
  • Learn في الاعتبار، على عاتقه، على محمل الجد as whole partnerships with fixed prepositions.
  • Meaning follows the frame: changing a complement or preposition can select a different sense rather than a stylistic variant.
