Beginner transliterations often print مدرسة as madrasah. If that spelling is memorized as a permanent final h, learners say madrasah al-banāt and madrasahī. Formal Modern Standard Arabic instead treats ة, tāʾ marbūṭa, as an ending with two grammatical faces: ordinary pause gives -a(h), while connection reveals t.
The same misunderstanding also causes spelling errors. Tāʾ marbūṭa is written ة only at the end of an independent word. Before an attached suffix it opens to written ت: مدرسة → مدرستي. It is neither ordinary ه nor ordinary final ت. The underlying system is taught on Tāʾ Marbūṭa ة; this page turns it into a repair procedure.
Diagnose the environment, not the letter alone
| Environment | Model | Output |
|---|---|---|
| genuine pause | مَدْرَسَةْ | madrasa(h), no released t |
| pronounced case ending | مَدْرَسَةٌ جَدِيدَةٌ | madrasatun jadīdatun |
| iḍāfa head | مَدْرَسَةُ الْبَنَاتِ | madrasatu l-banāti |
| attached suffix | مَدْرَسَتِي | madrasatī; ت is written |
| true hāʾ | وَجْه | wajh; h remains |
| true tāʾ | بِنْت | bint; t remains at pause |
The notation -a(h) represents a pausal vowel with an optional light breathy release, not a full lexical consonant ه. When a case ending or grammatical continuation follows, the t is structural and cannot be replaced by that optional breath.
Common Mistakes
Six wrong-to-right repairs
1. Releasing t at an ordinary pause
❌ هذه القاعة.
hādhihi l-qāʿat
Incorrect pausal reading — final القاعة ends in -a(h), not released t.
✅ انتهت الجلسة في هذه القاعة.
intahati l-jalsatu fī hādhihi l-qāʿa(h).
The session ended in this hall. (Natural pause: no released t.)
2. Silencing t inside an iḍāfa
❌ راجعت خريطة المدينة قبل الرحلة.
rājaʿtu kharīṭa al-madīna qabla r-riḥla
Incorrect connected reading — خريطة is a construct head and must expose t before المدينة.
✅ راجعت خريطة المدينة قبل الرحلة الصباحية.
rājaʿtu kharīṭata l-madīnati qabla r-riḥlati ṣ-ṣabāḥiyya(h).
I reviewed the city map before the morning trip.
3. Attaching a suffix to an invented h
❌ حقيبتها ثقيلة.
ḥaqībahā thaqīla
Incorrect — the possessive suffix follows the connected stem ḥaqībat-, not a pausal *ḥaqībah*.
✅ حقيبتها ثقيلة، فحملتها إلى السيارة.
ḥaqībatuhā thaqīlatun, fa-ḥamaltuhā ʾilā s-sayyāra(h).
Her bag is heavy, so I carried it to the car.
4. Dropping t before a pronounced case ending
❌ وصلت موظفة جديدة إلى القسم.
waṣalat muwaẓẓafa jadīda ʾilā l-qism
Incorrect fully inflected reading — internal indefinite موظفة has -tun before its adjective, not pausal -a.
✅ وصلت موظفة جديدة إلى القسم هذا الصباح.
waṣalat muwaẓẓafatun jadīdatun ʾilā l-qismi hādhā ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
A new employee arrived at the department this morning.
In a less fully inflected (formal spoken) style, some internal case vowels may be reduced. That register variation does not turn ة into lexical h; when the ending is pronounced, t carries it.
5. Writing ه because the pause sounds h-like
❌ وصلت المدرسه الجديدة.
Incorrect spelling — ه is a different letter; “school” ends in dotted ة even when paused.
✅ بدأت المدرسة الجديدة عملها قبل بدء العام الدراسي.
badaʾati l-madrasatu l-jadīdatu ʿamalahā qabla badʾi l-ʿāmi d-dirāsiyy.
The new school began operating before the school year started.
6. Keeping ة before an attached suffix
❌ وضعت الكتاب في غرفةها.
Incorrect spelling — ة cannot remain medial before ـها; it opens to written ت.
✅ وضعت الكتاب في غرفتها قرب النافذة.
waḍaʿtu l-kitāba fī ghurfatihā qurba n-nāfidha(h).
I put the book in her room near the window.
Minimal contrast 1: pause versus construct
هذه شركة.
hādhihi sharika(h).
This is a company. (Sentence-final pause: no t.)
شركة النقل انتقلت إلى مبنى أكبر.
sharikatu n-naqli ntaqalat ʾilā mabnan ʾakbar.
The transport company moved to a larger building. (Construct head: -atu.)
The written citation form شركة is unchanged before a separate noun. Syntax changes the pronunciation: a complete phrase can pause after sharika(h), but construct شركة النقل is incomplete until النقل arrives.
Minimal contrast 2: ة versus ه
حددنا وجهة الرحلة قبل شراء التذاكر.
ḥaddadnā wijhata r-riḥlati qabla shirāʾi t-tadhākir.
We chose the trip's destination before buying the tickets. (وجهة has tāʾ marbūṭa.)
ظهر التعب على وجه المسافر بعد الرحلة.
ẓahara t-taʿabu ʿalā wajhi l-musāfiri baʿda r-riḥla(h).
Fatigue showed on the traveler's face after the journey. (وجه ends in true hāʾ.)
The dots distinguish two words and two consonantal structures. True ه in وجه stays h when case follows; hidden t in وجهة appears in وجهةَ الرحلة.
Case and construct state work together
The vowel after t is not always u. The head receives case from the larger sentence; iḍāfa merely forces connection and blocks tanwīn.
هذه بوابة المطار الجديدة.
hādhihi bawwābatu l-maṭāri l-jadīda(h).
This is the airport's new gate. (Nominative head: -atu.)
فتح الحارس بوابة المطار الجديدة.
fataḥa l-ḥārisu bawwābata l-maṭāri l-jadīda(h).
The guard opened the airport's new gate. (Accusative head: -ata.)
وقفنا عند بوابة المطار الجديدة.
waqafnā ʿinda bawwābati l-maṭāri l-jadīda(h).
We stood at the airport's new gate. (Genitive head: -ati.)
The repair is t plus the required case vowel, not one memorized ending -atu. In contemporary speech, a case-light connected realization such as bawwābat al-maṭār may occur (formal spoken), but a pause that erases t inside the chain is not the intended standard connection.
Suffixes change spelling as well as sound
جامعتنا تستقبل طلابا من عشرين دولة.
jāmiʿatunā tastaqbilu ṭullāban min ʿishrīna dawla(h).
Our university receives students from twenty countries.
زرت مكتبتكم بعد انتهاء المحاضرة.
zurtu maktabatakum baʿda ntihāʾi l-muḥāḍara(h).
I visited your library after the lecture ended.
The written forms contain ت because the possessive suffix makes the consonant medial. The connecting vowel reflects syntax: nominative -tunā in جامعتنا, accusative -takum in مكتبتكم.
Legitimate pausal variation
A limited class in which ة follows long ā—including حياة، فتاة، صلاة—allows a careful formal pausal pronunciation retaining t, alongside the common -ā(h) outcome. This does not license final t on ordinary short-a مدرسة or غرفة.
ما أجمل هذه الحياة.
mā ʾajmala hādhihi l-ḥayāh.
How beautiful this life is! (Common pausal -āh; careful formal -āt is also attested.)
Regional varieties may color pausal -a differently (regional: varies), while Quranic recitation has specialized pausal conventions (Quranic). Neither variation changes the spelling distinction between ة، ت، ه.
Mixed diagnostic set
| Form in context | Decision | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| هذه غرفة. | genuine pause | ghurfa(h) |
| غرفة الفندق | construct head | ghurfatu/ghurfata/ghurfati l-funduq |
| غرفتي | attached suffix | ghurfatī; written ت |
| غرفة كبيرة | case may be pronounced internally | ghurfatun kabīra(h) in full reading |
| بنت | true final tāʾ | bint at pause |
| وجه | true hāʾ | wajh |
Editing a paragraph
❌ وصلت رسالة الشركة إلى مديرة الفرع، فوضعتها المديره في حقيبةها.
waṣalat risāla ash-sharika ʾilā mudīra al-farʿ, fa-waḍaʿathā l-mudīrah fī ḥaqībahā
Incorrect — the reading silences construct t, invents h before a suffix, and the spelling replaces ة with ه or keeps ة medially.
✅ وصلت رسالة الشركة إلى مديرة الفرع، فوضعتها المديرة في حقيبتها.
waṣalat risālatu sh-sharikati ʾilā mudīrati l-farʿi, fa-waḍaʿathā l-mudīratu fī ḥaqībatihā.
The company's letter reached the branch manager, so she put it in her bag.
Constructs رسالةُ الشركة and مديرةِ الفرع retain written ة but expose t. Suffixed حقيبتها opens ة to written ت. Independent المديرة keeps written ة, while its internal nominative ending is pronounced in this careful reading.
Repair procedure
- Check the letter: dotted ة, ordinary ت, or ه.
- Mark a genuine pause or the grammatical material that follows.
- At pause, read ordinary short-a ة as -a(h); do not release t.
- Before a pronounced case ending or a genitive complement, reveal t and add the correct vowel.
- Before an attached suffix, write ت and pronounce it: مدرستها, never مدرسةها or madrasahā.
- Treat long-ā pausal variation and regional coloring as labeled exceptions, not a new default.
Key Takeaways
- Ordinary pause gives -a(h), while case, construct state, and suffixes reveal t.
- A separate genitive noun leaves written ة intact; an attached suffix opens it to written ت.
- True ه remains h and true final ت remains t, including at pause.
- The vowel after connected t comes from case or the suffix, so learn -tu/-ta/-ti rather than one fixed form.
- Long-ā words and regional pronunciation show limited variation, but spelling remains stable.
