The Arabic perfect presents an event as a bounded whole; the imperfect presents a situation from inside, without enclosing its endpoint. Past versus present is an important tendency, but it is not the decision itself. A perfect can report a present result, while an imperfect can describe past background, a past habit, or a future event when another expression supplies the time frame.
English tense labels therefore give only a first clue. Ask whether the Arabic speaker is advancing a completed event, opening a process, describing a regular pattern, or setting a background scene. The same real-world activity can take either viewpoint, and the choice changes what the sentence asks the listener to attend to.

The decision algorithm
- Check for a governor first. Particles such as لم، لن، أنْ require an imperfect in a particular mood. That grammatical requirement outranks a free aspect choice.
- Is the event presented as a complete unit? Choose the perfect for a bounded occurrence, a completed quantity, a closed interval, or a narrative step.
- Is the situation open from the reference point? Choose the imperfect for an unfolding process, state, habit, generalization, or schedule.
- Where is the reference time? Present, past, and future adverbs or auxiliaries locate the viewpoint. The stem alone does not settle time.
- What is the clause doing in the discourse? Perfect verbs commonly advance narrative foreground; كان + imperfect commonly supplies past background or repetition.
- What does the lexical verb normally mean? A state, activity, achievement, and change of state have different natural boundaries. Valency and definiteness remain intact, but neither mechanically selects aspect.
قرأ المحرر التقرير أمس وأرسل ملاحظاته
qaraʾa l-muḥarriru t-taqrīra ʾamsi wa-ʾarsala mulāḥaẓātih
The editor read the report yesterday and sent his comments. (Two bounded foreground events.)
يقرأ المحرر التقرير الآن ويضع علامات على الفقرات الغامضة
yaqraʾu l-muḥarriru t-taqrīra l-ʾāna wa-yaḍaʿu ʿalāmātin ʿalā l-faqarāti l-ghāmiḍa(h)
The editor is reading the report now and marking the unclear paragraphs. (Open process.)
The object التقرير is definite in both, and قرأ / يقرأ have the same valency. Neither definiteness nor object choice determines aspect. The time frame and viewpoint do.
Choose the perfect for a bounded whole
A boundary may come from a completed endpoint, a dated occurrence, a measured quantity, or a closed interval. The event need not be brief. Ten years can be bounded if the discourse treats the period as finished.
كتب المحرر ثلاثة ملخصات هذا الأسبوع وسلمها صباح اليوم
kataba l-muḥarriru thalāthata mulakhkhaṣātin hādhā l-ʾusbūʿa wa-sallamahā ṣabāḥa l-yawm
The editor has written three summaries this week and submitted them this morning. (The completed quantity supplies a boundary.)
عاشت الأسرة في مسقط اثنتي عشرة سنة ثم انتقلت إلى صلالة
ʿāshati l-ʾusratu fī masqaṭa ithnatay ʿashrata sanatan thumma ntaqalat ʾilā ṣalāla(h)
The family lived in Muscat for twelve years and then moved to Salalah. (A long but closed interval.)
Perfect aspect also supports a current-result reading. Arabic does not need a special auxiliary corresponding to English has:
وصلت الشحنة للتو، ويمكننا بدء التركيب بعد الظهر
waṣalati sh-shiḥnatu li-t-tawwi, wa-yumkinunā badʾu t-tarkībi baʿda ẓ-ẓuhr
The shipment has just arrived, and we can begin installation this afternoon. (Completed arrival with a current consequence.)
The morphology of وصلت is the ordinary perfect. للتو and the present consequence motivate the English present-perfect translation.
Choose the imperfect for an open situation
The imperfect is natural for present processes, repeated practices, states, general truths, and contextually future schedules. Frequency and duration expressions make the intended reading observable.
يكتب المحرر ملخصا جديدا كل أسبوع
yaktubu l-muḥarriru mulakhkhaṣan jadīdan kulla ʾusbūʿ
The editor writes a new summary every week. (Habitual pattern.)
تعتمد هذه المنصة على خادمين يعملان بالتوازي
taʿtamidu hādhihi l-minaṣṣatu ʿalā khādimayni yaʿmalāni bi-t-tawāzī
This platform relies on two servers that operate in parallel. (Standing state and general operation.)
يناقش المجلس الموازنة غدا في جلسة علنية
yunāqishu l-majlisu l-muwāzanata ghadan fī jalsatin ʿalaniyya(h)
The council will discuss the budget tomorrow in a public session. (Future time from غدا.)
The imperfect in the last sentence is not “present.” The schedule and غدا place its open event in the future. سـ or سوف could make futurity more explicit, but the time phrase already makes the reading available.
Narrative foreground and background
In a past narrative, perfect verbs commonly answer “what happened next?” An imperfect, usually framed by كان, answers “what was happening then?”
كان الموظفون يراجعون الحسابات عندما انقطع الاتصال بالخادم
kāna l-muwaẓẓafūna yurājiʿūna l-ḥisābāti ʿindamā nqaṭaʿa l-ittiṣālu bil-khādim
The employees were reviewing the accounts when the server connection was lost. (Background process plus bounded interruption.)
كان places the open review in the past. Perfect انقطع advances the event line. This is not a rule that long events use the imperfect and short events the perfect; the contrast is internal view versus bounded development.
فتح الحارس البوابة، ودخلت الحافلة، ثم نزل الركاب
fataḥa l-ḥārisu l-bawwābata, wa-dakhalati l-ḥāfilatu, thumma nazala r-rukkāb
The guard opened the gate, the bus entered, and then the passengers got off. (Foreground sequence.)
In (literary) narrative, an author may deliberately switch to a vivid imperfect after a clear past anchor. That marked historical-present effect is not a license to alternate forms randomly in neutral reporting.
Repetition can take either viewpoint
“Repeated” does not automatically mean imperfect. A series can be viewed as an open habit or as a completed set inside a closed period.
زارت الباحثة المختبر كل يوم خلال أسبوع التجربة
zārati l-bāḥithatu l-mukhtabara kulla yawmin khilāla ʾusbūʿi t-tajriba(h)
The researcher visited the laboratory every day during the experiment week. (Completed series inside a closed week.)
كانت الباحثة تزور المختبر كل يوم حين كانت تجمع العينات
kānati l-bāḥithatu tazūru l-mukhtabara kulla yawmin ḥīna kānat tajmaʿu l-ʿayyināt
The researcher used to visit the laboratory every day while she was collecting samples. (Past habitual frame.)
Both are grammatical. The perfect sums up the visits as a finished set; كانت تزور opens a recurring routine within a past period.
Clause type and governors can override the free choice
The perfect has no indicative, subjunctive, or jussive alternation. The imperfect does. A particle may therefore require an imperfect even when English describes past or future time.
لم تصل الشحنة أمس بسبب إغلاق الطريق
lam taṣili sh-shiḥnatu ʾamsi bisababi ʾighlāqi ṭ-ṭarīq
The shipment did not arrive yesterday. (لم requires a jussive imperfect with past reference.)
نأمل أن تصل الشحنة قبل نهاية الدوام
naʾmulu ʾan taṣila sh-shiḥnatu qabla nihāyati d-dawām
We hope the shipment arrives before the end of the workday. (أنْ requires a subjunctive imperfect.)
In these clauses, choose the correct mood after recognizing the governor. Do not replace the imperfect with a perfect merely because the first translation is past or the second concerns a future arrival.
A contextual decision exercise
Consider a news paragraph: first an announcement occurred, then an ongoing response began, while a pre-existing process continued. The viewpoint changes with the discourse job of each clause.
أعلنت الجامعة النتائج صباحا، وتستقبل الآن طلبات المراجعة، وكان الموظفون يجيبون عن استفسارات الطلاب منذ الثامنة
ʾaʿlanati l-jāmiʿatu n-natāʾija ṣabāḥan, wa-tastaqbilu l-ʾāna ṭalabāti l-murājaʿati, wa-kāna l-muwaẓẓafūna yujībūna ʿan istifsārāti ṭ-ṭullābi mundhu th-thāmina(h)
The university announced the results this morning, is now accepting review requests, and its employees had been answering students' questions since eight. (Formal news register.)
Perfect أعلنت foregrounds the completed development. Imperfect تستقبل describes the current open process. كان ... يجيبون supplies the past background. A single English “past/present/future” rule cannot produce this organization.
Common Mistakes
Using a perfect for an intended ongoing background
❌ راجع الموظف الحسابات عندما انقطع الاتصال
Grammatical only as a bounded review, but wrong for the intended ‘was reviewing’; use كان + imperfect for open background.
✅ كان الموظف يراجع الحسابات عندما انقطع الاتصال فجأة
kāna l-muwaẓẓafu yurājiʿu l-ḥisābāti ʿindamā nqaṭaʿa l-ittiṣālu fajʾa(h)
The employee was reviewing the accounts when the connection suddenly failed.
Using an imperfect for a clearly completed dated event
❌ يوقع الوزير الاتفاق أمس في الرباط
Incorrect for one completed event yesterday — the finished time frame calls for the perfect.
✅ وقع الوزير الاتفاق أمس في مقر الوزارة
waqqaʿa l-wazīru l-ittifāqa ʾamsi fī maqarri l-wizāra(h)
The minister signed the agreement yesterday at the ministry's headquarters.
Assuming every repeated action must be imperfect
❌ وجود كل يوم يفرض المضارع دائما
Incorrect analysis — a completed series within a closed interval can use the perfect.
✅ اتصلت بالمورد كل يوم خلال أسبوع التفاوض
ittaṣaltu bil-muwarridi kulla yawmin khilāla ʾusbūʿi t-tafāwuḍ
I called the supplier every day during the week of negotiations. (Completed set.)
Leaving a past habit without a past frame
❌ جدي يقرأ الصحيفة كل مساء حين كان شابا
Unintended time clash — the bare imperfect sounds present until the later phrase; establish the past habit with كان.
✅ كان جدي يقرأ الصحيفة كل مساء حين كان شابا
kāna jaddī yaqraʾu ṣ-ṣaḥīfata kulla masāʾin ḥīna kāna shābban
My grandfather used to read the newspaper every evening when he was young.
Switching viewpoint without a discourse reason
❌ دخلت المديرة القاعة ثم تفتح الملف وتقرأ الرسالة
Incorrect for one completed sequence — تفتح and تقرأ do not preserve the bounded viewpoint established by دخلت.
✅ دخلت المديرة القاعة ثم فتحت الملف وقرأت الرسالة
dakhalati l-mudīratu l-qāʿata thumma fataḥati l-milaffa wa-qaraʾati r-risāla(h)
The director entered the hall, then opened the file and read the message.
Final diagnostic checklist
- Identify any particle or auxiliary that forces an imperfect or supplies the time frame.
- Choose the perfect for a bounded whole, completed quantity, closed interval, current result, or foreground step.
- Choose the imperfect for an open process, state, habit, general truth, schedule, or background.
- Treat repetition as compatible with either viewpoint; inspect whether the series is open or closed.
- Keep lexical stem, valency, agreement, and mood separate from the aspect decision.
- Use a literary vivid imperfect only when the past frame and stylistic switch are deliberate.
Key Takeaways
- The perfect views a situation as a bounded whole; the imperfect opens it as process, state, habit, schedule, or background.
- Time expressions and governors locate the situation and may require an imperfect even with past or future reference.
- Repetition permits either aspect: a completed set favors the perfect, while an open routine favors the imperfect.
