Modern Standard Arabic did not replace Classical Arabic with a new grammatical system. It inherited the core morphology, case system, verbal patterns, particles, and much vocabulary, then developed contemporary genre norms. The useful choice is therefore not “modern grammar or old grammar” as two sealed boxes. It is whether a construction is fully productive today, productive but elevated, restricted to a formula, or mainly quotation- and recognition-bound.
The same inherited form can be ancient and completely neutral: كان، إنّ، الذي, the jussive after لم, and the internal passive are ordinary contemporary MSA. Conversely, a perfectly analyzable construction such as conditional إذما can sound deliberately Classical or archaizing. Grammaticality is only the first test; productivity, genre, discourse function, and audience expectation decide whether a construction belongs in your own sentence. The four-way classification is developed further on Classical Residue in Elevated MSA.
The decision algorithm
Use these observable tests:
- Do current writers freely create new sentences with the construction across news, education, and public information? Treat it as contemporary MSA.
- Is it productive mainly in essays, speeches, legal reasoning, or literary narrative? Use it with an explicit (formal/literary/academic) register expectation.
- Does it perform one conventional discourse job, such as أما بعد opening a formal address? Keep it inside that formula.
- Does it occur chiefly in older texts, poetry, scripture, historical imitation, or grammar books? Treat it as recognition material or frame it as quotation.
- Would a broad contemporary audience recover its governor, valency, aspect, and information structure without rereading? If not, choose the current alternative unless historical voice is part of the purpose.
This algorithm does not punish elevation. It asks the marked form to earn its place.
Four statuses on one continuum
| Status | Observable behavior | Production advice |
|---|---|---|
| core inherited | ordinary in many contemporary genres | use without a Classical label |
| productive elevated | accepts new vocabulary but raises rhetorical level | use in formal, literary, or academic contexts |
| formula-bound | performs one conventional textual function | use only when that function is present |
| recognition/quotation-bound | readable but rare in neutral new prose | quote, attribute, or label; prefer a current alternative in ordinary writing |
Age cannot assign a row. The relative pronoun الذي is old but fully productive; الألى “those who” is recognized in Classical and archaizing prose but not the neutral plural relative of contemporary writing.
Core inherited grammar is still modern grammar
Writers sometimes avoid case government or the internal passive because these feel “Classical.” That creates false simplicity. Contemporary MSA still uses the inherited system wherever the genre calls for it.
لم تصل النتائج النهائية إلى اللجنة حتى الآن.
lam taṣili n-natāʾiju n-nihāʾiyyatu ʾilā l-lajnati ḥattā l-ʾān.
The final results have not reached the committee yet. (Core contemporary MSA; jussive after لم.)
Jussive تصلْ links with a helping kasra before the article. Nothing about this productive negative perfect reading requires a Classical label.
نقلت الوثائق إلى الأرشيف بعد تصويرها رقميا.
nuqilati l-wathāʾiqu ʾilā l-ʾarshīfi baʿda taṣwīrihā raqmiyyan.
The documents were moved to the archive after being digitized. (Ordinary contemporary internal passive.)
Nonhuman plural الوثائق takes feminine-singular نُقلت. The internal passive is inherited morphology and a current formal resource; it does not become archaic merely because colloquial varieties may prefer other strategies.
Likewise, definiteness and valency remain real. اعتمد على still requires على, and an iḍāfa still derives definiteness from its structure. A “modern” sentence is not an English clause with Arabic vocabulary.
Productive elevated survivals
Some inherited frames remain available for new contemporary content while signaling a high rhetorical register. ما إن... حتى links an onset to an immediate consequence (formal/literary):
ما إن أطلقت المنصة الجديدة حتى تضاعف عدد الطلبات.
mā ʾin ʾuṭliqati l-minaṣṣatu l-jadīdatu ḥattā taḍāʿafa ʿadadu ṭ-ṭalabāt.
No sooner was the new platform launched than the number of applications doubled. (Productive elevated formal prose.)
The vocabulary is contemporary; the frame supplies tightly staged narrative. A public notice could instead use بعد إطلاق المنصة الجديدة، تضاعف..., which is less rhetorical, not more grammatical.
Causal إذ remains productive in academic and judicial explanation (formal/academic):
لا تسمح هذه البيانات بالمقارنة المباشرة، إذ تختلف طرق القياس بين الدراستين.
lā tasmaḥu hādhihi l-bayānātu bi-l-muqāranati l-mubāshira(h), ʾidh takhtalifu ṭuruqu l-qiyāsi bayna d-dirāsatayn.
These data do not permit direct comparison, since the measurement methods differ between the two studies. (Academic.)
Neutral لأن could express the same causal relation. إذ treats the reason as an explanatory fact integrated into an argument and raises density.
Emphatic لئن... فـ is productive in speeches and literary argument (formal/literary):
لئن تأخر الإصلاح، فإن الحاجة إليه لم تتراجع.
la-ʾin taʾakhkhara l-ʾiṣlāḥu, fa-ʾinna l-ḥājata ʾilayhi lam tatarājaʿ.
Even if reform has been delayed, the need for it has not diminished. (Elevated public argument.)
In a routine status email, رغم تأخر الإصلاح، ما زلنا بحاجة إليه is more proportionate. The elevated option is valid; its rhetorical commitment is the observable difference.
Formula-bound constructions
Some inherited expressions remain current because they perform a specialized discourse act. أما بعد moves from an opening salutation or ceremonial preface to the body of an address (formal/ceremonial):
أما بعد، فسأبين في هذه المذكرة أسباب التوصية الجديدة.
ʾammā baʿd, fa-sa-ʾubayyinu fī hādhihi l-mudhakkirati ʾasbāba t-tawṣiyati l-jadīda(h).
To proceed: in this memorandum I will explain the reasons for the new recommendation. (Ceremonial/formal transition.)
It does not mean generic “after that.” In a short workplace email, وفيما يلي أسباب التوصية is usually better. Similarly, وبناء عليه performs an inferential move in decisions and legal-administrative reasoning (legal/administrative); inserting it into casual explanatory prose imports that institutional stance.
ثبت أن الطلب قدم بعد الموعد، وبناء عليه قررت اللجنة عدم قبوله.
thabata ʾanna ṭ-ṭalaba quddima baʿda l-mawʿid, wa-bināʾan ʿalayhi qarrarati l-lajnatu ʿadama qabūlih.
It was established that the application was submitted after the deadline; accordingly, the committee decided not to accept it. (Legal-administrative reasoning.)
The formula is productive inside its function. Its nominal form بناءً is accusative with tanwīn fatḥ; the fixed prepositional complement is عليه.
Recognition- and quotation-bound constructions
Conditional إذما, temporal/interrogative أيان, and plural relative الألى belong mainly to Classical, poetic, or consciously archaizing usage. They remain meaningful; they are not the neutral building blocks for a contemporary report.
إذما تصبر على التعلم تدرك غايتك.
ʾidhmā taṣbir ʿalā t-taʿallumi tudrik ghāyatak.
Whenever you persevere in learning, you attain your goal. (Classical/literary recognition; both verbs are jussive.)
إن تصبر على التعلم تبلغ هدفك.
ʾin taṣbir ʿalā t-taʿallumi tablug hadafak.
If you persevere in learning, you will reach your goal. (Contemporary formal alternative.)
Both sentences obey conditional jussive government. The choice is not grammar versus no grammar; it is marked historical-literary voice versus a productive contemporary conditional.
The relative contrast is equally visible:
الألى حفظوا العهد يذكرهم الشاعر في ختام القصيدة.
al-ʾulā ḥafiẓū l-ʿahda yadhkuruhumu sh-shāʿiru fī khitāmi l-qaṣīda(h).
The poet mentions those who kept the covenant at the poem's close. (Archaic/literary relative form.)
الذين حافظوا على الاتفاق تذكرهم الوثيقة بالاسم.
alladhīna ḥāfaẓū ʿalā l-ittifāqi tadhkuruhumu l-wathīqatu bi-l-ism.
The document names those who upheld the agreement. (Contemporary formal MSA.)
Notice that changing the relative also changed the surrounding lexical frame to suit genre. Register is a property of the whole sentence, not a collectible rare word.
Quotation changes the editorial task
When reproducing a Classical passage, preserve its wording and attribute it. Do not silently modernize rare syntax inside quotation marks, because the form is part of the evidence. Outside the quotation, provide a contemporary paraphrase if readers need one.
استشهد المؤلف بالمقولة القديمة ثم شرح معناها بلغة معاصرة.
ʾistashhada l-muʾallifu bi-l-maqūlati l-qadīmati thumma sharaḥa maʿnāhā bilughatin muʿāṣira(h).
The author cited the old saying and then explained its meaning in contemporary language. (Quotation explicitly framed.)
Ordinary MSA spelling should remain ordinary. Do not add Uthmani Quranic signs, recitation symbols, or scripture-specific orthography to a newly composed elevated sentence. Historical voice comes from attested construction and context, not decorative glyphs.
Clause type, information structure, and audience
Classical-style density often combines particles, long periods, fronting, and nominal chains. Each device may be grammatical, yet their accumulation changes the audience's processing burden. A public-service announcement needs a visible actor, action, time, and instruction. An essay may deliberately delay its conclusion for rhetorical effect.
Compare two valid treatments of the same development:
بعد أن نشرت الجامعة النتائج، بدأ الطلاب تقديم طلبات المراجعة.
baʿda ʾan nasharati l-jāmiʿatu n-natāʾija, badaʾa ṭ-ṭullābu taqdīma ṭalabāti l-murājaʿa(h).
After the university published the results, students began submitting review requests. (Clear contemporary formal MSA.)
ما كادت الجامعة تعلن النتائج حتى توالت عليها طلبات المراجعة.
mā kādati l-jāmiʿatu tuʿlinu n-natāʾija ḥattā tawālat ʿalayhā ṭalabātu l-murājaʿa(h).
The university had scarcely announced the results before review requests began pouring in. (Elevated journalistic/literary pacing.)
The second foregrounds immediacy and abundance, not merely sequence. Use it when that rhetorical information matters. The first is better if readers need a simple procedural timeline.
Boundary case: elevated does not mean Classical-only
Causal إذ, ما إن... حتى, and لم يكد... حتى are sometimes dismissed as “Classical” because they are uncommon in casual speech. That diagnosis confuses register with historical status. They still generate new sentences about platforms, datasets, and elections, so they are productive elevated MSA. By contrast, الألى can be understood but rarely generates neutral institutional prose.
لم يكد النظام يستقر حتى ظهر خلل جديد في قاعدة البيانات.
lam yakadi n-niẓāmu yastaqirru ḥattā ẓahara khalalun jadīdun fī qāʿidati l-bayānāt.
The system had scarcely stabilized before a new database fault appeared. (Productive elevated contemporary MSA.)
Contextual decision exercise
A municipal notice tells residents where to submit a form: use direct contemporary clauses. A keynote speaker contrasts failure with enduring experience: لئن... فإن... may fit. A legal decision states an inference: وبناء عليه performs a conventional job. A historical novel's narrator imitates an older voice: a recognition-bound form can be deliberate, but label it in teaching material. A research paper quotes an old source: preserve and attribute the source, then paraphrase.
يرجى إرسال الطلب عبر المنصة قبل نهاية الخميس، ولن تقبل الطلبات المتأخرة.
yurjā ʾirsālu ṭ-ṭalabi ʿabra l-minaṣṣati qabla nihāyati l-khamīs, wa-lan tuqbala ṭ-ṭalabātu l-mutaʾakhkhira(h).
Please send the application through the platform before the end of Thursday; late applications will not be accepted. (Clear contemporary public notice.)
Common Mistakes
Calling productive jussive grammar archaic
❌ لم يسعى الفريق إلى حل المشكلة.
Incorrect morphology, not modern simplification: productive jussive لم deletes the final weak letter of يسعى. Diagnostic: identify the governor before assigning a historical label.
✅ لم يسع الفريق إلى إخفاء نتائج التحقيق.
lam yasʿa l-farīqu ʾilā ʾikhfāʾi natāʾiji t-taḥqīq.
The team did not seek to conceal the investigation's results. (Contemporary formal MSA.)
Using a recognition-only form in a plain public notice
أيان يفتح الجسر أمام المركبات؟
ʾayyāna yuftaḥu l-jisru ʾamāma l-markabāti?
When will the bridge be opened to vehicles? (Archaic/literary question; unsuitable for a plain public notice.)
✅ عندما تنتهي أعمال إصلاح الجسر، سيفتح أمام المركبات.
ʿindamā tantahī ʾaʿmālu ʾiṣlāḥi l-jisr, sayuftaḥu ʾamāma l-markabāt.
When the bridge repairs are finished, it will be opened to vehicles.
Treating one rare word as a complete elevated style
❌ أوفد المدير غلاما ليحضر جدول البيانات الإلكتروني.
Register collision: غلاما evokes an older servant/boy while electronic spreadsheet belongs to a routine modern office context. Diagnostic: evaluate the whole lexical and social scene, not one word's age.
✅ كلف المدير الموظف بإحضار جدول البيانات الإلكتروني.
kallafa l-mudīru l-muwaẓẓafa bi-ʾiḥḍāri jadwali l-bayānāti l-ʾiliktirūniyy.
The director assigned the employee to bring the electronic spreadsheet.
Silently modernizing a quotation
❌ يغير المحرر تركيب النص القديم داخل علامتي الاقتباس من غير تنبيه.
Editorially incorrect: quoted grammar is part of the source and must not be silently replaced. Diagnostic: distinguish the source's voice from your explanatory paraphrase.
✅ أثبت المحرر النص القديم كما ورد، ثم قدم شرحا معاصرا له.
ʾathbata l-muḥarriru n-naṣṣa l-qadīma kamā warad, thumma qaddama sharḥan muʿāṣiran lah.
The editor reproduced the old text as transmitted, then provided a contemporary explanation.
Final diagnostic checklist
- Is the construction core inherited grammar, productive elevated syntax, a fixed formula, or recognition-bound?
- Can contemporary writers freely insert new participants and topics, or are you repeating a memorized historical frame?
- Does the genre support the construction's elevation: public notice, news report, academic argument, legal decision, speech, or literature?
- Are case, mood, aspect, agreement, and lexical valency correct even in the marked construction?
- Does the form clarify information structure or add a deliberate rhetorical effect, rather than merely sounding old?
- If the material is quoted, is it preserved and attributed, with a separate contemporary explanation when needed?
- Will the intended audience recover actor, action, time, and logical relation without unnecessary effort?
Key Takeaways
- Core inherited grammar is contemporary MSA; age alone does not make a form archaic.
- Productive elevated frames can host new content but deliberately raise the rhetorical register.
- Formula-bound and recognition-bound constructions need the right function, framing, or quotation context.
- Preserve a source's historical grammar in quotation, while using a separate contemporary paraphrase for accessibility.
