Focus expressions do not merely add a loose meaning such as “only,” “also,” or “even.” They tell the listener which alternatives are being excluded, added, or presented as surprising. In راجع المدير الفصل الأخير فقط, فقط excludes the other chapters; if it follows a time phrase instead, it excludes other times. Placement therefore changes the claim, not just its style.
Arabic uses several grammatical forms for this work. فقط is a fixed focus word, أيضًا is a lexicalized accusative, حتى can function as a focus particle, and بالذات is a prepositional phrase. “Focus adverb” names their function in the sentence; it is not one Arabic morphological class. This is the same form-versus-function distinction developed for sentence adverbs, but focus expressions operate inside the proposition rather than evaluating the whole proposition.
Four expressions, four focus relations
| Expression | Core contribution | Form and case | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| فقط | only; excludes alternatives | fixed, invariant focus word | neutral/formal |
| أيضًا | also, too; adds an alternative | lexicalized accusative | neutral/formal |
| حتى | even; adds a surprising limiting case | focus particle in this use | neutral/formal |
| بالذات | in particular, especially, precisely | prepositional phrase: بـ + الذات | neutral/formal |
None of these expressions agrees with the focused noun. The noun still receives case from its own role, while the focus expression keeps its internal form. أيضًا has a conventional -an ending; الذاتِ is genitive after attached بـ. With focus حتى, any case visible on the following constituent comes from that constituent's role in the clause, not from a blanket rule that حتى always governs one case. This page concerns “even”; endpoint حتى in expressions such as “until Friday” has a different analysis.
فقط: put “only” beside what it restricts
The safest neutral pattern is focused constituent + فقط. Compare the same words with two placements:
راجع المدير الفصل الأخير فقط قبل الاجتماع.
rājaʿa l-mudīru l-faṣla l-ʾakhīra faqaṭ qabla l-ijtimāʿ.
The director reviewed only the final chapter before the meeting. (Other chapters are excluded.)
راجع المدير الفصل الأخير قبل الاجتماع فقط.
rājaʿa l-mudīru l-faṣla l-ʾakhīra qabla l-ijtimāʿi faqaṭ.
The director reviewed the final chapter only before the meeting. (Other times are excluded.)
The first sentence answers “which chapter?” The second answers “when?” English intonation can rescue a distant only; unvocalized Arabic prose cannot depend on that intonation. Adjacency makes the intended set of alternatives recoverable.
Subject focus works the same way:
ليلى فقط تعرف رمز الخزانة.
laylā faqaṭ taʿrifu ramza l-khizāna(h).
Only Layla knows the cabinet code.
This order makes ليلى the excluded-alternative set: nobody else knows it. Initial فقط can sometimes have wider scope in formal prose, but it is easily misread; keeping it after the focused phrase is the clearer productive rule.
أيضًا: adding an alternative without saying which one vaguely
أيضًا signals that the focused item joins an already established set. Its position is more flexible than that of فقط, but ambiguity remains. Place it immediately after a topical subject when the subject is the addition; place it near the predicate or its complement when another action or object is being added.
سلمى أيضا ستشارك في المقابلة.
salmā ʾayḍan sa-tushāriku fī l-muqābala(h).
Salma too will take part in the interview. (Someone else is already taking part.)
ستراجع سلمى الميزانية أيضا بعد الغداء.
sa-turājiʿu salmā l-mīzāniyyata ʾayḍan baʿda l-ghadāʾ.
Salma will review the budget as well after lunch. (The review joins another task or another reviewed item supplied by context.)
The second sentence needs context to identify what is being added. That is not a grammatical defect: focus is anaphoric and depends on a salient alternative. In careful prose, repeat enough material to remove a consequential ambiguity.
A frequency expression and a focus expression may occur together, each with its own scope:
يزور الباحث الأرشيف عادة، ويقابل أمين المكتبة أيضا.
yazūru l-bāḥithu l-ʾarshīfa ʿādatan, wa-yuqābilu ʾamīna l-maktabati ʾayḍan.
The researcher usually visits the archive, and also meets the librarian.
Here عادةً quantifies the recurring archive visit, while أيضًا adds meeting the librarian to the routine. The focus expression does not become a frequency adverb merely because both expressions occur late in their clauses. See Frequency Adverbs for the tense and position of habitual expressions.
حتى: “even” and the surprising edge of a scale
Focus حتى includes a case the speaker presents as unexpected or extreme. It normally precedes the focused constituent. Moving the constituent changes what counts as surprising.
حتى المدير انتظر في الطابور.
ḥattā l-mudīru ntaẓara fī ṭ-ṭābūr.
Even the director waited in line. (The director is the surprising participant.)
قرأ المدير حتى الملحق الأخير.
qaraʾa l-mudīru ḥattā l-mulḥaqa l-ʾakhīr.
The director read even the final appendix. (The appendix is the surprising extent.)
In the first example, المديرُ is the subject and therefore nominative. In the second, الملحقَ is the object and therefore accusative. Focus حتى identifies the unexpected item; it does not erase the syntax of the clause.
Do not confuse this use with temporal or spatial endpoint حتى “until/as far as,” as in انتظرنا حتى المساء. Endpoint حتى relates an event to a boundary. Focus حتى places an item at a surprising end of a contextual scale.
بالذات: selecting a particularly relevant member
بالذات means “in particular,” “especially,” or “precisely that one.” It commonly follows the selected noun phrase and is useful when the speaker singles out an item without necessarily excluding all others.
أحتاج إلى هذا الملف بالذات لإكمال الطلب.
ʾaḥtāju ʾilā hādhā l-malaffi bi-dh-dhāti li-ʾikmāli ṭ-ṭalab.
I need this particular file to complete the application.
أحب أحياء المدينة القديمة، وهذا الحي بالذات هادئ مساء.
ʾuḥibbu ʾaḥyāʾa l-madīnati l-qadīma(h), wa-hādhā l-ḥayyu bi-dh-dhāti hādiʾun masāʾ.
I like the old city's neighborhoods, and this neighborhood in particular is quiet in the evening.
Contrast فقط, which normally excludes alternatives: “this file and no other,” with بالذات, which highlights one especially relevant file. Context can make the practical implication similar, but the encoded focus relation differs.
Adjective, accusative phrase, and focus phrase are different structures
English often uses related forms such as particular/particularly and special/especially. Arabic does not create a general adverb by putting an agreeing adjective in the accusative. Compare an adjective with a focus phrase:
ناقشنا حالة خاصة في الاجتماع.
nāqashnā ḥālatan khāṣṣatan fī l-ijtimāʿ.
We discussed a special case at the meeting. (خاصة is an adjective agreeing with حالة.)
ناقشنا هذه الحالة بالذات لأن موعدها قريب.
nāqashnā hādhihi l-ḥālata bi-dh-dhāti li-ʾanna mawʿidahā qarīb.
We discussed this case in particular because its deadline is near. (بالذات is a focus phrase.)
An entire noun phrase may itself be an adverbial accusative and still contain a fully agreeing adjective:
عمل الفريق ساعة كاملة فقط يوم الجمعة.
ʿamila l-farīqu sāʿatan kāmilatan faqaṭ yawma l-jumuʿa(h).
The team worked for only one full hour on Friday.
ساعةً كاملةً functions adverbially as a duration, but كاملةً remains an adjective and agrees with feminine singular ساعةً in case and indefiniteness. فقط scopes over that whole duration phrase and remains invariant. Adverbial meaning belongs to the phrase as a unit; internal adjective agreement does not disappear.
Common Mistakes
Translating English -ly with an accusative adjective
❌ أريد هذا القسم خاصا.
Incorrect for ‘I want this section especially’—خاصا is an adjective form, not a free focus adverb.
✅ أريد هذا القسم بالذات لأنه يتضمن النتائج.
ʾurīdu hādhā l-qisma bi-dh-dhāti li-ʾannahu yataḍammanu n-natāʾij.
I want this section in particular because it contains the results.
Dropping adjective agreement inside an adverbial duration
❌ انتظرنا ساعة كامل فقط.
Incorrect—كامل modifies feminine ساعة inside the accusative duration phrase and must agree with it.
✅ انتظرنا ساعة كاملة فقط أمام العيادة.
intaẓarnā sāʿatan kāmilatan faqaṭ ʾamāma l-ʿiyāda(h).
We waited for only one full hour in front of the clinic.
Putting فقط beside the wrong constituent
❌ قابلت المترجم فقط بعد الجلسة.
Wrong for the intended ‘I met the interpreter only after the session’—this placement excludes other people, not other times.
✅ قابلت المترجم بعد الجلسة فقط لمراجعة المصطلحات.
qābaltu l-mutarjima baʿda l-jalsati faqaṭ li-murājaʿati l-muṣṭalaḥāt.
I met the interpreter only after the session to review the terminology.
Treating حتى “even” as if it made every following noun genitive
❌ حتى المدير مجرور لأن حتى حرف جر دائما.
Incorrect analysis—focus حتى does not erase the subject role of المدير.
✅ حتى المدير حضر الاجتماع المبكر.
ḥattā l-mudīru ḥaḍara l-ijtimāʿa l-mubakkir.
Even the director attended the early meeting.
Key Takeaways
- فقط excludes alternatives, أيضًا adds one, حتى marks a surprising limiting case, and بالذات singles one out as especially relevant.
- Put the focus expression beside the constituent whose alternatives matter; placement can change truth conditions.
- These expressions have different forms and internal case behavior, so there is no single Arabic focus-adverb morphology.
- An adverbial noun phrase can still contain an adjective with full agreement: ساعةً كاملةً فقط.
- Distinguish focus حتى “even” from endpoint حتى “until/as far as.”
