English usually puts an attributive adjective before its noun: a quiet room, the final answer. Formal Modern Standard Arabic normally reverses that order: غرفة هادئة, literally “room quiet,” and الإجابة النهائية, literally “the answer the final.” The noun establishes the person or thing first; the following adjective narrows or describes it.
Position works together with agreement. An adjective inside the noun phrase follows the noun and matches its gender, number, case, and definiteness. A predicate adjective also follows a definite subject in the basic nominal sentence, but it stays indefinite. That definiteness contrast lets you tell “the long road” from “the road is long.”
The broader feature system is summarized in Adjective Agreement; this page concentrates on where the adjective stands and what that position means.
The basic order is noun + adjective
Use noun + adjective, not English adjective + noun. Both words receive the case required by the larger sentence, and both are indefinite or both definite when the adjective is attributive.
استأجرنا مكتبا صغيرا قرب المحطة.
ʾistaʾjarnā maktaban ṣaghīran qurba l-maḥaṭṭa(h).
We rented a small office near the station.
زرنا مدينة صغيرة على الساحل.
zurnā madīnatan ṣaghīratan ʿalā s-sāḥil.
We visited a small city on the coast.
المكتب الصغير قريب من بيتي.
al-maktabu ṣ-ṣaghīru qarībun min baytī.
The small office is near my home.
المدينة الصغيرة هادئة ليلا.
al-madīnatu ṣ-ṣaghīratu hādiʾatun laylā.
The small city is quiet at night.
These four examples show masculine and feminine, indefinite and definite phrases. In each, the adjective comes after the noun. English word order is so automatic that reversing this sequence takes deliberate practice.
Phrase or sentence? Check definiteness
Arabic has no present-tense equivalent of English is in an ordinary nominal sentence. As a result, two words in the same order may be either one noun phrase or a full sentence. Definiteness agreement supplies the boundary.
الطريق الطويل
aṭ-ṭarīqu ṭ-ṭawīl
The long road. (One definite noun phrase.)
الطريق طويل.
aṭ-ṭarīqu ṭawīl.
The road is long. (A complete sentence.)
In الطريق الطويل, both words carry الـ, so الطويل belongs inside the definite phrase. In الطريق طويل, the indefinite طويل tells us something new about the definite topic الطريق.
The same diagnostic works with a feminine noun:
القهوة الساخنة على الطاولة.
al-qahwatu s-sākhinatu ʿalā ṭ-ṭāwila(h).
The hot coffee is on the table.
القهوة ساخنة.
al-qahwatu sākhina(h).
The coffee is hot.
English distinguishes these structures with word order and is. Arabic uses agreement with الـ as well as sentence structure.
More than one adjective
Several adjectives can follow the same noun. Each adjective agrees with the noun. Arabic may list them directly or coordinate the last description with و “and,” depending on meaning and style.
نبحث عن شقة واسعة هادئة.
nabḥathu ʿan shaqqatin wāsiʿatin hādiʾa(h).
We are looking for a spacious, quiet apartment.
اشترينا طاولة كبيرة ومتينة للمطبخ.
ʾishtaraynā ṭāwilatan kabīratan wa-matīnatan li-l-maṭbakh.
We bought a large, sturdy table for the kitchen.
ناقشت اللجنة المقترح الجديد الواضح والمفصل.
nāqashati l-lajnatu l-muqtaraḥa l-jadīda l-wāḍiḥa wa-l-mufaṣṣal.
The committee discussed the new, clear, detailed proposal.
The last noun is definite and accusative, so all three adjectives are definite and accusative. The final adjective is read in pause. In normal prose, adjective order often follows communicative logic: a classifying or identifying property tends to stay close to the noun, while an evaluative or added comment tends to come later. There is no single rigid mirror of English adjective order; arrange descriptions so that each addition naturally narrows or supplements the noun.
An intensifier follows the adjective it modifies:
هذا حل عملي جدا.
hādhā ḥallun ʿamaliyyun jiddā.
This is a very practical solution.
Here جدا strengthens عملي; it does not interrupt the noun–adjective order.
Human and nonhuman plurals
Position remains postnominal in the plural, but agreement differs. Human plural nouns normally take plural adjectives:
الأطباء الماهرون يعملون في هذا القسم.
al-ʾaṭibbāʾu l-māhirūna yaʿmalūna fī hādhā l-qism.
The skilled doctors work in this department.
الممرضات الخبيرات دربن الفريق.
al-mumarriḍātu l-khabīrātu darrabna l-farīq.
The experienced nurses trained the team.
Nonhuman plurals normally take feminine singular adjectives:
الطرق الطويلة متعبة في الشتاء.
aṭ-ṭuruqu ṭ-ṭawīlatu mutʿibatun fī sh-shitāʾ.
The long roads are tiring in winter.
حفظت الملفات المهمة في مجلد منفصل.
ḥafiẓtu l-malaffāti l-muhimmata fī mujalladin munfaṣil.
I saved the important files in a separate folder.
The position is unchanged: noun first, adjective second. The nonhuman plural rule changes the adjective's form, not where it stands.
Adjectives after an iḍāfa
An iḍāfa keeps its nouns together. The adjective comes after the complete iḍāfa, and agreement helps show which noun it describes.
قرأنا مسودة التقرير الجديدة.
qaraʾnā musawwadati t-taqrīri l-jadīda(h).
We read the new draft of the report. (Feminine adjective modifies musawwada.)
قرأنا مسودة التقرير الجديد.
qaraʾnā musawwadati t-taqrīri l-jadīd.
We read the draft of the new report. (Masculine adjective modifies at-taqrīr.)
You cannot place الجديدة between مسودة and التقرير, because the two terms of the iḍāfa form a tight unit. Gender agreement resolves the intended scope here. When both nouns have the same gender, context or rephrasing may be necessary; Arabic does not magically eliminate every ambiguity.
Marked and special orders
Advanced Arabic has constructions in which an adjective-like elative precedes a noun, such as أكبر مدينة “the largest city,” and formal or literary prose can front a predicate for emphasis. These are separately structured patterns, not permission to reverse ordinary attributive order. At A1, produce neutral noun + agreeing adjective. Recognize unusual fronting as (formal) or (literary) when context supports it rather than copying it into everyday noun phrases.
Common Mistakes
Copying English adjective-first order
❌ الجديدة السيارة سريعة.
Incorrect — an ordinary attributive adjective cannot precede its noun this way.
✅ السيارة الجديدة سريعة.
as-sayyāratu l-jadīdatu sarīʿa(h).
The new car is fast.
Forgetting definiteness agreement
❌ قرأت الرسالة عاجلة التي وصلت اليوم.
Incorrect — the adjective inside this definite phrase is missing al-.
✅ قرأت الرسالة العاجلة التي وصلت اليوم.
qaraʾtu r-risālata l-ʿājilata llatī waṣalati l-yawm.
I read the urgent message that arrived today.
Giving a nonhuman plural a plural adjective
❌ اشتريت أقلاما جديدين.
Incorrect — nonhuman plural aqlām requires feminine singular agreement.
✅ اشتريت أقلاما جديدة.
ʾishtaraytu ʾaqlāman jadīda(h).
I bought new pens.
Using semantic gender instead of grammatical gender
❌ الباب الجديدة مفتوحة.
Incorrect — bāb is grammatically masculine, regardless of the object it names.
✅ الباب الجديد مفتوح.
al-bābu l-jadīdu maftūḥ.
The new door is open.
Splitting an iḍāfa with an adjective
❌ قرأنا مسودة الجديدة التقرير.
Incorrect — the two terms of the iḍāfa must remain together.
✅ أنهينا مسودة التقرير الجديدة.
ʾanhaynā musawwadati t-taqrīri l-jadīda(h).
We finished the new draft of the report.
Key Takeaways
- In an ordinary attributive phrase, put the noun first and the adjective after it.
- Match an attributive adjective with its noun in gender, number, case, and definiteness.
- A definite adjective continues a definite noun phrase; an indefinite adjective after a definite subject often acts as the predicate.
- Stacked adjectives all follow the noun, and an iḍāfa stays together before its adjective.
- Human plurals take plural agreement; nonhuman plurals normally take feminine singular agreement.
