Root analysis can answer two different questions. Historical analysis asks how an established word fits an inherited family; productive analysis asks what speakers can build or understand as a new form today. The first can connect مكتب “office” with كتب “write” without claiming that modern speakers coin مكتب afresh. The second requires evidence that a pattern remains available for new bases, new contexts, or predictable contrasts.
The distinction matters because Arabic morphology is unusually visible. A plausible root-and-pattern analysis may be historically elegant while offering no license to invent a Lebanese word.
A continuum, not a switch
Productivity has degrees. Inflection is highly productive: once a speaker accepts a new verb, person marking normally follows. Some derivations are available but semantically restricted. Others survive only in a closed list.
| Status | What speakers can do | Example |
|---|---|---|
| highly productive | apply ordinary person/aspect morphology to an accepted verb | فرمت / بيفرمت farmat / byifarmet, formatted / formats |
| selectively productive | extend a familiar pattern when meaning and community practice support it | technical or playful formations understood in context |
| lexicalized | recognize a family but retrieve each word separately | كتب، كتاب، مكتب |
| historical/fossilized | recover a relation through scholarship, not live word building | opaque meanings no longer compositionally predictable |
فرمت الملف، بس نسي يعمل نسخة احتياطية.
farmat el-malaf, bass nise yiʿmal noskha iḥtiyāṭiyye.
He formatted the file, but forgot to make a backup. (technical/informal; integrated loan verb)
هني بيفرمتوا الأجهزة قبل ما يسلموها.
hinne byifarmto l-azhize ʾabel ma ysallmūha.
They format the devices before handing them over. (technical/informal)
The second sentence shows productive Lebanese inflection around an integrated stem. It does not prove that the English word has acquired an ancient triliteral root. Borrowing and Arabic conjugation can coexist.
Evidence for live productivity
A pattern is productively available when speakers accept it with recent bases, understand an unfamiliar formation without prior memorization, use it across more than one lexical item, and assign a reasonably compositional meaning. Frequency alone is not enough: a fossil can be frequent, and a genuinely new formation can be rare.
Useful evidence includes spontaneous coinages, correction behavior, jokes that rely on recoverable structure, and stable inflection across speakers. Dictionary existence proves attestation, not necessarily current productivity.
فهمت الكلمة الجديدة لأن طريقة تصريفها لبنانية وواضحة.
fhimet el-kilme l-zhdīde laʾann ṭarīʾet taṣrīfa libnēniyye w-wāḍḥa.
I understood the new word because its inflection was clearly Lebanese. (metalinguistic/neutral)
One listener's guess is weaker evidence than repeated community usage. At C2 level, “I can imagine what it means” must remain separate from “speakers conventionally use it.”
A family map: sh-gh-l
The sh-gh-l network contains both transparent contrasts and lexicalized meanings.
| Member | Reading | Current role | Accessibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| شغل | sheghel | work | basic lexical noun |
| شغلة | shaghle | thing; task; matter | lexicalized everyday noun |
| اشتغل | ishtaghal | worked; functioned | established verb |
| شغل | shaghghal | turned on; operated; employed | established causative-like verb |
| مشغول | mashghūl | busy; occupied | lexicalized participle |
| تشغيل | tashghīl | operation; activation; employment | formal/technical noun |
المكيف اشتغل، بس بعده ما عم يبرد منيح.
el-mkayyef ishtaghal, bass baʿdo ma ʿam ybarred mnīḥ.
The air conditioner started working, but it still isn't cooling well. (informal)
شغل المكيف وخلي الباب مسكر.
shaghghel el-mkayyef w-khallī l-bēb msakkar.
Turn on the air conditioner and keep the door closed. (informal)
The intransitive اشتغل and transitive شغّل form an accessible contrast. Yet شغلة “thing” is not calculated as “one unit of work” every time it is used, and مشغول has conventional social meanings such as being unavailable. A live contrast can coexist with lexicalized relatives in one family.
Same pattern, unrelated roots
Form II doubling occurs in unrelated established verbs such as علّم “taught” and رتّب “arranged.” The pattern can correlate with causation or increased affectedness, but the actual event and complement frame come from each verb.
علمت الموظف الجديد ورتبتله أول أسبوع.
ʿallamet el-mwaẓẓaf el-zhdīd w-rattabetlo awwal usbūʿ.
I trained the new employee and organized his first week for him. (professional/neutral)
علّم changes what a learner knows; رتّب changes the organization of things. Their shared pattern supplies neither an automatic translation nor identical valency. See Forms II–V for the form network.
Fossilized patterns and folk reanalysis
Speakers may recognize pieces of a word without actively deriving it. A historically patterned noun can be stored whole, especially when its meaning has drifted. Conversely, a borrowed or opaque word may be humorously split into familiar-looking pieces. That folk reanalysis can motivate a joke or later change, but it is not proof of the word's historical origin.
مكتب بالنسبة إلي كلمة كاملة، مش كل مرة بشتقها من كتب.
maktab bin-nisbe ile kilme kēmle, mish kill marra bshtiʾʾa min katab.
For me, maktab is a whole word; I don't derive it from katab every time. (metalinguistic/informal)
Psychological storage and historical analysis answer different questions. Etymology can be correct even when ordinary speakers no longer use the pathway productively.
Neologisms and register
Institutions often prefer a learned Arabic derivative; technical teams may integrate an English or French base; advertising may coin a playful hybrid. These choices signal audience and identity. A new word is not automatically “bad Arabic,” but its domain and uptake must be stated.
بالدليل التقني كاتبين إعادة تشغيل، وبالحكي منقول شغل الجهاز من جديد.
bid-dalīl et-teʾne kētbīn iʿādet tashghīl, w-bil-ḥake mnʾūl shaghghel el-zhēz min zhdīd.
The technical manual says ‘restart,’ while in conversation we say ‘turn the device on again.’ (formal/technical versus informal)
Productivity is therefore register-specific. A formation may be routine among software engineers and unfamiliar elsewhere.
Dialogue: family relation, different valency and register
التطبيق ما اشتغل بعد التحديث، شو بعمل؟
et-taṭbīʾ ma ishtaghal baʿd et-taḥdīs, shū baʿmel?
Nour: The app didn't work after the update; what should I do? (informal dialogue)
جرب تشغله من جديد؛ إذا ما زبط، منعمل إعادة تشغيل كاملة.
zharreb tshaghghlo min zhdīd; iza ma zbeṭ, mniʿmal iʿādet tashghīl kēmle.
Fadi: Try to start it again; if that doesn't work, we'll do a full restart. (informal dialogue with technical noun)
اشتغل makes the device the subject; شغّل takes it as object; إعادة تشغيل packages the operation as a technical noun phrase. Family membership does not erase these valency and register differences.
Common Mistakes
Treating every three-letter sequence as a live root
❌ كل تلات حروف ورا بعض جذر منتج.
Incorrect — loans, affixes, weak roots, and accidental sequences require family evidence.
✅ مندور على عيلة كلمات وتصريفات مستعملة.
mndawwer ʿala ʿaylet kilmāt w-taṣrīfāt mistaʿmale.
We look for a family of attested words and inflections.
Assigning an automatic Form II meaning
❌ كل فعل عوزن فعل يعني سبب حدا يعمل الفعل البسيط.
Incorrect — causation is a tendency, while each established verb has a lexical meaning.
✅ علم ورتب عالوزن نفسه، بس لكل واحد معنى وإطار.
ʿallam w-rattab ʿal-wazen nafso, bass la-kill wāḥad maʿna w-iṭār.
ʿAllam and rattab share a pattern, but each has its own meaning and frame.
Confusing historical relation with online derivation
❌ المتكلم بيشتق مكتب من كتب كل مرة.
Incorrect claim — an established lexical word can be stored whole despite a valid historical family relation.
✅ مكتب كلمة مستقلة وقرابتها من كتب بتساعدنا نتذكرها.
maktab kilme mistaʾille w-ʾarābeta min katab btsēʿedna nitdhakkara.
Maktab is an independent word, and its relation to katab helps us remember it.
Forcing a loan into a Classical analysis
❌ فرمت لازم يكون من جذر عربي قديم.
Incorrect — فرمت is an integrated modern loan stem.
✅ فرمت مستعار، بس بيتصرف كفعل لبناني.
farmat mistaʿār, bass byitṣarraf k-fiʿel libnēne.
Farmat is borrowed, but it conjugates as a Lebanese verb.
Key Takeaways
Historical analysis explains relationships among established words; productivity concerns operations speakers can extend now. Evidence comes from novel acceptance, compositional interpretation, community use, and stable inflection—not surface resemblance alone. Productivity can belong to one layer, such as verb inflection, while root derivation remains absent. Always separate attested meaning, valency, register, and borrowing history.
