Borrowed Stems in Lebanese Morphology

Lebanese has long borrowed vocabulary from languages including Turkish, French, and English. Once borrowed, a word can take the Arabic article, possessive suffixes, plural endings, person markers, and sometimes a new verb stem. تلفون “telephone,” for example, appears naturally as تلفوني “my phone,” التلفونات “the phones,” and beside the verb تلفن “phone.” The structure of native and borrowed four-consonant bases is compared in Quadriliteral and Reduplicated Roots.

Integration is gradual. One item may be fully conventional across generations, another may belong to a profession or age group, and a third may be a momentary code-switch. This page describes common urban Lebanese behavior without pretending every foreign word follows one automatic recipe.

A borrowed noun can take ordinary Lebanese grammar

Established loan nouns combine with the same outer morphology as inherited nouns. They can be definite, possessed, modified, and pluralized.

تلفوني عالشاحن، فيك تفتحلي الإيميل عالكمبيوتر؟

telefōne ʿa-sh-shāḥen, fīk tiftaḥle l-īmēl ʿa-l-kompyūter?

My phone is charging; can you open the email for me on the computer? (informal)

حطينا طاولتين زغار عالبلكون.

ḥaṭṭēna ṭāwiltēn zghār ʿa-l-balkōn.

We put two small tables on the balcony. (informal; established French loan)

بعتتلي تلات فيديوهات، بس بعدني ما حضرتن.

baʿatetle tlēt vīdyohāt, bass baʿdne ma ḥḍerton.

She sent me three videos, but I still haven't watched them. (informal)

The sound plural -ات is common with loans, but it is not mandatory for every loan and its use does not prove a triliteral root. Learn the plural with the noun, just as you would learn كتاب / كتب.

A loan can support a local family

The telephone family shows several degrees of integration. Speakers do not have to know the source language to use these forms.

FormReadingRole
تلفونtelefōnphone, telephone

تلفنلي بس توصل، كرمال إنزل إفتحلك.

talfenle bass tōṣal, kirmēl inzal iftaḥlak.

Phone me when you arrive so I can come down and open for you. (informal)

This is useful evidence for a local borrowed stem, but it does not mean every noun can be shortened into a verb the same way. كمبيوتر does not automatically license a verb invented by deleting vowels.

💡
Borrowing and morphology answer different questions: where a word came from, and how Lebanese speakers use it now. A foreign origin does not make current Lebanese inflection any less grammatical.

Borrowed verbs enter Arabic conjugation

Some borrowed bases are treated as compact four-consonant verbs. They take Lebanese subject prefixes and suffixes like other verbs. Common examples include كنسل “cancel,” فرمت “format,” and شيّك “check.” Usage and pronunciation vary with setting and speaker, so learn the attested principal parts.

PerfectNonpastTypical objectRegister
كنسل kansalبيكنسل byikanselموعد، حجزcasual/professional (informal)
فرمت farmatبيفرمت byifarmetجهاز، ديسكcomputing (technical)
شيّك shayyikبيشيّك byishayyikعالإيميل، عالحسابeveryday/professional (informal)

كنسلت الحجز لأن الموعد ما عاد يناسبني.

kansalet el-ḥazhiz laʾann el-mawʿed ma ʿād ynāsebne.

I canceled the reservation because the time no longer suited me. (informal)

قبل ما تفرمت الجهاز، خزن كل الملفات.

ʾabel ma tfarmet el-zhēz, khazzen kill el-malafāt.

Before you format the device, back up all the files. (technical)

شيك عالإيميل، يمكن وصل الرد.

shayyik ʿa-l-īmēl, yimken wiṣel er-radd.

Check the email; maybe the reply arrived. (informal/professional)

The ordinary urban pronunciation of ج remains zh even inside technical Arabic vocabulary, while recent loans can also contain sounds or spellings with more speaker-to-speaker variation. Do not “correct” a loan toward Modern Standard Arabic merely because its source is foreign.

The same borrowed verb pattern does not fix syntax

كنسل and فرمت share a compact four-consonant shape and take a direct object. شيّك, however, commonly combines with على for “check on/look at,” especially in casual office talk. Shape does not supply the preposition.

كنسلوا الاجتماع ولا بعده بوقته؟

kansalu l-izhtimēʿ walla baʿdo b-waʾto?

Mira: Did they cancel the meeting, or is it still at its scheduled time? (informal dialogue)

بعده بوقته، بس شيكي عالإيميل الرسمي قبل ما تطلعي.

baʿdo b-waʾto, bass shayyike ʿa-l-īmēl er-rasme ʾabel ma tiṭlaʿe.

Hadi: It's still on time, but check the official email before you leave. (informal dialogue; الرسمي adds institutional register)

These are two unrelated borrowed bases wearing familiar Arabic verbal morphology. Their complements and professional associations must be stored separately.

Phonological adaptation is conventional, not exact copying

Borrowers fit unfamiliar sound sequences to Lebanese possibilities. A source vowel may shift; consonant clusters may be broken up; and Arabic spelling may vary when no single letter matches the source sound. That is why the established Lebanese form—not the French or English spelling—is the relevant starting point for grammar.

هيدا اللفظ صار عادي بلبنان، حتى لو أصله فرنسي.

hayda l-lafeẓ ṣār ʿāde b-Lebnēn, ḥatta law aṣlo franse.

This pronunciation has become normal in Lebanon, even if its origin is French. (neutral; هيدا is common Lebanese)

There may be more than one spelling online because Lebanese has no single enforced colloquial orthography. That variation is not evidence that any pronunciation is possible.

Borrowing versus code-switching

An integrated borrowing has relatively stable Lebanese pronunciation and accepts Lebanese morphology. A code-switch selects a foreign word or phrase as foreign material inside the conversation. The boundary is a continuum, and bilingual speakers can treat the same item differently in different moments.

Compare established إيميل / إيميلات with عملت أبديت للملف “I did an update to the file.” In the latter, Arabic عملت serves as a light verb while أبديت may remain a recognizable English insertion. That does not automatically create an Arabic root.

عملت أبديت للملف وبعتت النسخة الجديدة.

ʿmelet update lil-malaf w-baʿatet en-noskha l-zhdīde.

I updated the file and sent the new version. (informal workplace code-switch)

💡
A Lebanese article or plural is strong evidence of grammatical integration, but not proof of a Classical root. Ask separately whether the item is borrowed, code-switched, or derived locally.

Common Mistakes

Treating every loan as morphologically inert

❌ ما فينا نجمع فيديو بالعربي.

Incorrect — the established Lebanese plural فيديوهات is common.

✅ نزلوا فيديوهات جديدة اليوم.

nazzalu vīdyohāt zhdīde l-yōm.

They uploaded new videos today.

Assuming every foreign noun can become a verb

❌ كل كلمة إنكليزية فيي حطها بوزن كنسل.

Incorrect — only attested borrowed stems have a conventional Lebanese paradigm.

✅ بحفظ كنسل وبيكنسل لأنن مستعملين.

baḥfaẓ kansal w-byikansel laʾannon mistaʿmalīn.

I memorize kansal and byikansel because they are established in use.

Copying the English plural

❌ وصلني تلات إيميلز.

Incorrect in the integrated Lebanese pattern taught here — use the conventional Arabic plural إيميلات.

✅ وصلني تلات إيميلات.

wiṣelne tlēt īmēlāt.

I received three emails.

Calling every English insertion a root

❌ أبديت صار جذر عربي لأنه إجا بعد عملت.

Incorrect — a light-verb code-switch can remain foreign material without forming an Arabic root family.

✅ عملت أبديت مثال على مزج بالحديث، مش دليل لحاله على جذر.

ʿmelet update mithēl ʿala mazzh bil-ḥadīth, mish dalīl la-ḥālo ʿala zhizer.

‘I did an update’ is an example of mixing in speech, not by itself evidence for a root.

Key Takeaways

Borrowed words can be deeply Lebanese in their current grammar. Nouns take articles, suffixes, and plurals; some bases develop verbs with full person marking. Still, integration is word-specific, plural and principal parts must be verified, and a bilingual code-switch should not be forced into an inherited root analysis.
