Invariant ممكنmomken presents something as possible. Before an agreeing bare imperfect, it can mean “may/might,” ask whether an action is possible, or soften a request: ممكن يتأخر “he might be late,” ممكن تساعديني؟ “could you help me?” It also stands as a nominal predicate in هالشي ممكن “this is possible.”
English spreads these functions across may, might, can, could, and possible. Lebanese keeps ممكن unchanged and lets agreement, word order, intonation, and context identify the intended force. The following verb belongs to the bare-imperfect system, without ordinary b-.
Invariant ممكن plus an agreeing verb
The modal never changes. Person, gender, and number appear on the action that follows.
| Actor | Possibility frame | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| I | ممكن ساعد | momken sēʿed |
| you masculine | ممكن تساعد | momken tsēʿed |
| you feminine | ممكن تساعدي | momken tsēʿde |
| he | ممكن يساعد | momken ysēʿed |
| she | ممكن تساعد | momken tsēʿed |
| we | ممكن نساعد | momken nsēʿed |
| you plural | ممكن تساعدوا | momken tsēʿdo |
| they | ممكن يساعدوا | momken ysēʿdo |
ممكن ساعدك بعد الضهر إذا خلصت بكير.
momken sēʿdak baʿd eḍ-ḍoher iza khallaṣt bkīr.
I may be able to help you this afternoon if I finish early. (informal; first-person possibility)
الجيران ممكن يساعدونا بنقل الغراض.
el-zhīrēn momken ysēʿdūna b-naʾl el-ghrāḍ.
The neighbors may help us move the things. (informal; third-person plural agreement)
إنتي ممكن تلاقي نسخة بالمكتبة.
inte momken tlāʾe noskha bil-maktabe.
You might find a copy at the library. (informal; one female addressee)
Calling the complement an English-style infinitive hides this agreement. تلاقي is feminine second person here; يلاقوا would identify a third-person plural actor.
Clausal possibility and probability
In a statement, ممكن + clause places an event within the speaker's range of live possibilities. It does not specify a numerical probability. Evidence, adverbs, and competing alternatives make the judgment stronger or weaker.
ممكن يتأخر الاجتماع نص ساعة بسبب الزحمة.
momken yitʾakhkhar el-izhtimēʿ noṣṣ sēʿa b-sabab ez-zaḥme.
The meeting might be delayed half an hour because of traffic. (neutral; event possibility)
ممكن تنزل الأسعار، وممكن تضل متل ما هي.
momken tinzal el-asʿār, w-momken tḍall mitl ma hiyye.
Prices may fall, or they may stay as they are. (neutral; balanced alternatives)
حسب النشرة، ممكن تشتي بالليل.
ḥasab en-nashra, momken tishte bil-lēl.
According to the forecast, it may rain tonight. (neutral; forecast probability)
English can sometimes describes general possibility—“traffic can be bad here”—while ممكن normally evaluates a proposition in context. A habitual generalization often uses the b-imperfect instead: الزحمة بتكون قوية بهالوقت “traffic tends to be heavy at this time.”
Present and past viewpoints inside the possible proposition
ممكن itself has no tense. The structure inside its scope supplies the time and aspect.
ممكن يكون عم بيحكي مع الزبون هلق.
momken ykūn ʿam byiḥke maʿ ez-zabūn hallaʾ.
He may be talking with the customer now. (neutral; current progressive possibility)
ممكن يكون نسي المفتاح بالمكتب.
momken ykūn nisi l-miftēḥ bil-maktab.
He may have forgotten the key at the office. (informal; possibility about an earlier event)
وقتها كان ممكن نوصل قبل الغروب.
waʾta kēn momken nōṣal ʾabel el-ghorūb.
At that point, it was possible for us to arrive before sunset. (neutral; past possibility)
The Beirut progressive baseline remains عم + b-imperfect inside the chain: عم بيحكي, not a newly invented MSA ending. For anterior probability, يكون + perfect is useful, but context may also make a simpler perfect clause sufficient.
Polite questions and requests
With a second-person action and rising or suspended intonation, a possibility question conventionally becomes a request. ممكن makes room for feasibility or refusal; calm intonation, address terms, and thanks do the rest of the social work.
ممكن تسكري الباب وراكي؟
momken tsakkre l-bēb warāke?
Could you close the door behind you? (informal polite request to one woman)
ممكن تبعتولي الفاتورة عالإيميل؟
momken tibʿatūle l-fātūra ʿal-īmēl?
Could you all send me the invoice by email? (neutral professional request)
ممكن ناخد طاولة حد الشباك، لو سمحت؟
momken nākhod ṭāwle ḥadd esh-shobbēk, law samaḥt?
Could we have a table by the window, please? (polite service request)
There is no Lebanese equivalent of English past-tense politeness in could. ممكن stays the same; the question contour and interaction distinguish a request from a prediction.
Nominal and elliptical uses
When no action needs naming, ممكن can predicate possibility directly or stand in a polite elliptical frame.
هالحل ممكن، بس بده وقت ومصاري.
hal-ḥall momken, bass baddo waʾet w-maṣāre.
This solution is possible, but it needs time and money. (neutral; nominal predicate)
بكرا ممكن بالنسبة إلك؟
bokra momken bin-nisbe ilak?
Is tomorrow possible for you? (informal scheduling question to one man)
إذا ممكن، بدي الموعد بعد الضهر.
iza momken, badde l-mawʿed baʿd eḍ-ḍoher.
If possible, I'd like the appointment in the afternoon. (polite service interaction)
In these uses, do not add يكون merely because English contains be. Present nominal predication has no overt copula. More formal Arabic may use من الممكن أن (formal); inserting that frame into casual Beirut conversation changes register rather than improving correctness.
Two kinds of negation
مش ممكن rejects possibility: “not possible / impossible.” ممكن ما + bare clause keeps possibility affirmative but places negation inside the proposition: “may not.”
ممكن يجي رامي عالعشا.
momken yzhe Rāme ʿal-ʿasha.
Rami may come to dinner. (affirmative possibility)
مش ممكن يجي رامي عالعشا؛ بعده بالسفر.
mish momken yzhe Rāme ʿal-ʿasha; baʿdo bis-safar.
It isn't possible for Rami to come to dinner; he's still away. (possibility denied)
ممكن ما يجي رامي عالعشا إذا تأخر بالشغل.
momken ma yzhe Rāme ʿal-ʿasha iza tʾakhkhar bish-shoghol.
Rami may not come to dinner if he is delayed at work. (possible non-occurrence)
The first negative says coming is ruled out. The second keeps two futures open. English may not is itself ambiguous between “perhaps not” and “not permitted”; Lebanese word order lets you state the intended scope.
Negative requests place ما before the requested action:
ممكن ما تشغلوا الموسيقى هلق؟
momken ma tshaghghlo l-mūsīʾa hallaʾ?
Could you all not play the music now? (polite negative request)
Dialogue: probability versus a request
ممكن يتغير موعد الطيارة؟
momken yitghayyar mawʿed eṭ-ṭayyāra?
Nadine: Could the flight time change? (possibility question)
إيه، ممكن يتأخر شوي. ممكن تتصلي بالشركة وتتأكدي؟
ē, momken yitʾakhkhar shwayy. momken tittaṣle bish-shirke w-titʾakkade?
Karim: Yes, it might be delayed a little. Could you call the airline and make sure? (probability followed by a request to one woman)
Identical ممكن introduces both turns. The inanimate third-person clause expresses probability; the feminine second-person question plus request intonation asks for action.
Common Mistakes
Keeping b- on the action
❌ ممكن بتساعديني بكرا؟
Incorrect in the modal frame — ممكن selects a bare agreeing verb.
✅ ممكن تساعديني بكرا؟
momken tsēʿdīne bokra?
Could you help me tomorrow? (one female addressee)
Treating ممكن as a conjugated verb
❌ ممكنة تساعدينا لأن الفاعل مؤنث.
Incorrect — modal ممكن stays invariant; feminine agreement belongs on تساعدينا.
✅ ممكن تساعدينا يا رنا؟
momken tsēʿdīna ya Rana?
Could you help us, Rana?
Confusing impossible with perhaps not
❌ مش ممكن يجي يعني يمكن ما يجي.
Incorrect equivalence — the first rules the event out, while the second leaves noncoming as one possibility.
✅ ممكن ما يجي، بس بعد في احتمال يجي.
momken ma yzhe, bass baʿd fī iḥtimēl yzhe.
He may not come, but there is still a chance that he will.
Adding English-style do-support
❌ هل ممكن بتقدر تفتح الباب بالمحادثة العادية؟
Overbuilt and register-mixed — an ordinary Lebanese request needs neither formal هل nor two stacked ability markers.
✅ ممكن تفتح الباب؟
momken tiftaḥ el-bēb?
Could you open the door? (ordinary polite Lebanese)
Adding formal complement morphology
❌ ممكن أن تساعدني بالمحادثة اليومية.
Register mismatch — أن plus a formal verb belongs to MSA or deliberate mixed speech, not the Beirut baseline.
✅ ممكن تساعدني دقيقة؟
momken tsēʿedne dʾīʾa?
Could you help me for a minute? (informal)
Key Takeaways
ممكن stays invariant. An agreeing bare imperfect supplies the actor and event; nominal uses need no present copula. Statements express live possibility or probability, while second-person questions readily become polite requests through intonation and context. Contrast مش ممكن + clause “the event is impossible” with ممكن ما + clause “the event may not happen,” and keep formal أن and MSA mood endings out of the ordinary Beirut frame.
