Lebanese يمكنyimken marks the speaker's estimate: something may be true, but the speaker is not committing to it. It usually corresponds to English “maybe” or “perhaps,” yet those are translations of its stance, not fixed substitutes that determine where it goes.
In everyday urban Lebanese (informal), يمكن can stand before a whole clause or after an established topic. It does not ask permission and does not by itself license a request; those are central uses of ممكنmomken.
A speaker's uncertain commitment
Without يمكن, an ordinary statement presents its content as the speaker's current view. Adding يمكن lowers that commitment and leaves alternatives open.
رنا بعدها بالمكتب.
Rana baʿda bil-maktab.
Rana is still at the office. (informal assertion)
يمكن رنا بعدها بالمكتب.
yimken Rana baʿda bil-maktab.
Maybe Rana is still at the office. (informal uncertainty)
يمكن العنوان غلط، خلينا نتأكد.
yimken el-ʿonwēn ghalaṭ, khallīna nitʾakkad.
Maybe the address is wrong; let's check.
The particle evaluates the proposition that follows. It carries no person, gender, or tense marking. Lebanese speakers can answer يمكن alone when the missing proposition is obvious, much as English speakers say “maybe.”
يمكن، بعدني مش متأكد.
yimken, baʿdne mish mtʾakked.
Maybe; I'm still not sure. (informal response)
Clause-initial and topic-medial position
Clause-initial يمكن gives wide scope over the whole message. After a topic, it makes that topic the starting point and then marks uncertainty about the comment.
يمكن هاد المحل بيفتح عالتسعة.
yimken hād el-maḥall byiftaḥ ʿat-tisʿa.
Maybe this shop opens at nine. (uncertainty over the whole proposition)
هاد المحل يمكن بيفتح عالتسعة.
hād el-maḥall yimken byiftaḥ ʿat-tisʿa.
As for this shop, I think it may open at nine. (topic first, then uncertain comment)
القهوة يمكن بعدها سخنة.
el-ʾahwe yimken baʿda sokhne.
The coffee may still be hot. (informal; coffee is the established topic)
English permits maybe in several positions, including final position. Lebanese does not copy English adverb placement mechanically. Final يمكن can occur as an afterthought, but the neutral learner pattern is before the uncertain clause or after its topic.
With رح and future time
رح locates an event in the future; يمكن marks uncertainty about whether that future event will happen. The two particles therefore do different jobs and can occur together.
رح نوصل قبل السبعة.
raḥ nūṣal ʾabel es-sabʿa.
We'll arrive before seven. (future prediction presented confidently)
يمكن رح نوصل قبل السبعة.
yimken raḥ nūṣal ʾabel es-sabʿa.
Maybe we'll arrive before seven. (uncertain future prediction)
الطلب يمكن رح يتأخر شوي بسبب الزحمة.
eṭ-ṭalab yimken raḥ yitʾakhkhar shwayy b-sabab ez-zaḥme.
The order may be a little late because of traffic. (informal future estimate)
Omitting رح can shift the time interpretation toward a habit or a contextually understood present/future. Adding يمكن never supplies future time on its own. See رح and future reference.
يمكن versus ممكن
In epistemic statements, يمكن and ممكن can overlap: both may introduce a possibility. Their conversational ranges are not identical, however.
| Form | Core contribution | Typical everyday use |
|---|---|---|
| يمكن yimken | speaker uncertainty | “maybe / perhaps” before a proposition |
| ممكن momken | possibility or feasibility | possibility, permission, and polite requests |
يمكن سامي نسي الموعد.
yimken Sēme nise l-mawʿed.
Maybe Sami forgot the appointment. (speaker's guess)
ممكن سامي يكون نسي الموعد.
momken Sēme ykūn nise l-mawʿed.
It's possible that Sami forgot the appointment. (possibility assessment)
ممكن تعطيني كاسة مي؟
momken tiʿṭīne kēset mayy?
Could you give me a glass of water? (polite request)
The last request cannot normally be made by mechanically replacing ممكن with يمكن. Learn request ممكن + bare imperfect as its own construction on the ممكن page.
Negation and scope
With يمكن ما..., uncertainty has scope over a negative proposition: perhaps the event will not happen. With ما يمكن..., by contrast, the negation appears outside the particle; this is not the neutral Beirut way to say “maybe not.”
يمكن ما يلاقوا محل يصفوا فيه.
yimken ma ylāʾo maḥall yṣeffo fī.
Maybe they won't find a place to park. (uncertain negative proposition)
يمكن ما يكون في قهوة بالبيت.
yimken ma ykūn fī ʾahwe bil-bēt.
Maybe there isn't any coffee at home.
Compare أكيد ما رح يجي “he definitely won't come,” where certainty has scope over the negative clause, with يمكن ما رح يجي “maybe he won't come.” Particle order maps the speaker's stance onto the following material; it is not English adverb order translated word for word.
Formal homograph and regional range
Written يمكن also appears in Modern Standard Arabic (formal), including the verb form pronounced approximately yumkinu in fully inflected formal speech, as in “it is possible.” Urban Lebanese يِمْكِنyimken has no final case or mood vowel and functions freely as a conversational stance particle. Do not import the formal pronunciation merely because the spelling is shared.
The same colloquial particle is widespread across the Levant, with phonetic and frequency differences (regional: Syria, Palestine, Jordan). This page keeps the Beirut pronunciation and syntax as the production baseline.
Dialogue: deciding whether to wait
وين ليلى؟ قالت بتوصل عالستة.
wēn Layla? ʾālet btūṣal ʿas-sitte.
Nour: Where's Layla? She said she'd arrive at six.
يمكن علقت بالزحمة.
yimken ʿalʾet biz-zaḥme.
Tarek: Maybe she got stuck in traffic.
يمكن ما رح تطول، مننطر عشر دقايق؟
yimken ma raḥ tṭawwel, mninṭor ʿashar daʾāyeʾ?
Nour: Maybe she won't be long. Shall we wait ten minutes?
إيه، وبعدها منمشي.
ē, w-baʿda mnimshī.
Tarek: Yes, and then we'll leave.
Common Mistakes
Using يمكن for a polite request
❌ يمكن تسكر الشباك؟
Incorrect for the intended request — this sounds like an uncertain proposition, not the standard request construction.
✅ ممكن تسكر الشباك؟
momken tsakker esh-shobbēk?
Could you close the window?
Treating uncertainty as future marking
❌ يمكن رح بزورها الأسبوع الجايي.
Incorrect — رح selects the bare imperfect, so the following verb cannot keep its b-marker.
✅ يمكن رح زورها الأسبوع الجايي.
yimken raḥ zūra l-osbūʿ el-zhēye.
Maybe I'll visit her next week.
Reading the colloquial particle as formal Arabic
❌ يمكن يجي عالخمسة.
yumkinu yzhe ʿal-khamse
Misreading — yumkinu imports formal morphology into a Lebanese sentence.
✅ يمكن يجي عالخمسة.
yimken yzhe ʿal-khamse.
Maybe he'll come at five. (Lebanese pronunciation)
Key Takeaways
يمكن marks uncertain speaker commitment. Put it before the proposition it evaluates or after an established topic. Combine it with رح when both uncertainty and explicit future reference matter, and use يمكن ما... for “maybe not.” Keep it distinct from request- and permission-forming ممكن, and pronounce the Lebanese particle yimken, without formal endings.
