Form X is easy to recognize from استـ, but hard to translate with one rule. Some verbs preserve a request or seeking sense: استفسر “inquire,” استأذن “ask permission.” Some evaluate something: استغرب “find strange,” استصعب “find difficult.” Others describe becoming or reaching a state, and many are fully lexical: استعمل “use,” استفاد “benefit,” استلم “receive/take over.”
The historical label stafʿal is a recognition formula, not an English prefix meaning “request.” The Forms VI–X overview supplies the wider map; this page focuses on actual Lebanese meanings, complements, and register.
A focused paradigm: استعمل / بيستعمل
استعمل / بيستعمل “use” is common in ordinary conversation. At the beginning of an isolated word, the cluster receives a helping vowel: istaʿmal. With a nonpast prefix, the Beirut baseline has forms such as byistaʿmel and mnistaʿmel. Rapid connected speech may compress the vowels, but the consonants remain.
| Person/environment | Form | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3rd masculine singular perfect | استعمل | istaʿmal | he used |
| 1st singular perfect | استعملت | istaʿmalet | I used |
| 3rd masculine singular b-imperfect | بيستعمل | byistaʿmel | he uses |
| 3rd feminine singular b-imperfect | بتستعمل | btistaʿmel | she uses |
| 1st plural b-imperfect | منستعمل | mnistaʿmel | we use |
| 1st plural bare imperfect | نستعمل | nistaʿmel | that we use |
| masculine singular imperative | استعمل | istaʿmel | use |
استعملت هالبرنامج لأرتب المواعيد.
istaʿmalet hal-barnāmazh la-ratteb el-mawāʿīd.
I used this program to organize the appointments. (neutral; transitive lexical Form X)
هي بتستعمل القطار لتروح عالشغل.
hiyye btistaʿmel el-ʾiṭār la-trūḥ ʿash-shoghol.
She takes the train to go to work. (neutral; habitual b-imperfect, literally ‘uses the train’)
استعمل هالقلم، التاني ما عم بيكتب منيح.
istaʿmel hal-ʾalam, et-tēne ma ʿam byiktob mnīḥ.
Use this pen; the other one isn't writing well. (informal; imperative)
Request and seeking meanings
The traditional “seek/request” association is real in part of the vocabulary. استفسر is “inquire,” and استأذن is “ask permission.” These verbs often occur in professional, service, and careful speech (formal/professional), though they can be used conversationally when the situation fits.
استفسرت من الشركة عن شروط الضمان.
istafsaret min esh-sharike ʿan shorūṭ eḍ-ḍamēn.
I inquired with the company about the warranty conditions. (professional; source with من and topic with عن)
استأذنت من المديرة قبل ما فل.
istaʾzant min el-mdīra ʾabel ma fell.
I asked the manager's permission before leaving. (polite/professional; hamzated Form X)
English speakers should not assume that every استـ verb contains an understood request. استعمل is not “request work,” and استلم is not “ask to receive.”
Evaluation and experiencer meanings
Several frequent verbs present the subject's evaluation or reaction. استغرب means “find strange / be surprised,” and استصعب means “find difficult.” The thing evaluated can be a noun, a prepositional phrase, or an إنو clause depending on the verb.
استغربت إنه ما رد عالرسالة.
istaghrabet inno ma radd ʿar-risēle.
I was surprised that he didn't reply to the message. (neutral; clausal complement)
الطلاب استصعبوا السؤال الأخير.
eṭ-ṭollēb istaṣʿabo s-suʾāl el-akhīr.
The students found the last question difficult. (neutral/academic context; direct object evaluated)
The form does not tell you whether the English translation will use an active verb, a passive-looking experiencer phrase, or find + adjective. The Lebanese participant frame is the reliable guide.
Becoming, reaching, and a spelling trap
Some Form X verbs describe entering or attaining a state. استقرّ / بيستقرّ means “settle, stabilize”: it can describe a person becoming established in a place or job, or a situation becoming stable. It is common in professional and analytical topics as well as personal narratives.
بعد أسبوعين، وضعه الصحي استقر.
baʿd usbūʿēn, waḍʿo ṣ-ṣiḥḥe istaʾarr.
After two weeks, his condition stabilized. (professional/medical; Form X reaching a stable state)
بعد كم شهر استقر بالشغل الجديد.
baʿd kam shaher istaʾarr bish-shoghol el-zhdīd.
After a few months, he settled into the new job. (neutral; geminate Form X)
Do not count letters mechanically. Everyday استوى / بيستوي “become cooked or ready” also begins with the sequence استـ, but it is Form VIII of the root س-و-ي: the س belongs to the root and the following ت is the Form VIII infix. استقرّ, by contrast, has the Form X prefix before the root ق-ر-ر.
Lexical meanings and register concentration
Form X vocabulary is common across registers, but its distribution is uneven. استعمل, استغرب, and استلم are ordinary conversational verbs (informal/neutral). Words such as استفسر, استنتج “infer,” استحسن “consider favorable,” and استدعى “call for/summon” concentrate more strongly in professional, academic, or formal speech (professional/academic/formal).
استلمت الطرد اليوم الصبح.
istalamet eṭ-ṭared el-yōm eṣ-ṣoboḥ.
I received the package this morning. (informal; everyday lexical Form X)
من هالنتائج منستنتج إنو الخطة نجحت.
min han-natēyezh mnistantizh inno l-khiṭṭa nizhḥet.
From these results, we conclude that the plan succeeded. (academic/professional; analytical Form X)
Calling every Form X verb “formal” would be as misleading as calling every English word beginning with re- formal. Register belongs to the individual word and setting.
Transitivity and complement frames
Form X does not determine valency. Store the complement with the verb:
| Verb | Frame | Meaning/register |
|---|---|---|
| استعمل | استعمل شي | use something; neutral |
| استفاد | استفاد من شي | benefit from something; neutral |
| استفسر | استفسر من حدا عن شي | inquire with someone about something; professional |
| استغرب | استغرب من شي / استغرب إنو... | find something strange / be surprised that... |
| استقرّ | استقرّ بمحل / الوضع استقرّ | settle somewhere / become stable; intransitive |
استفدت كتير من شرحها.
istafadet ktīr min sharḥa.
I benefited a lot from her explanation. (neutral; استفاد with من)
استغرب من السعر، بس اشترى الجهاز.
istaghrab min es-siʿer, bass ishtara l-zhihēz.
He was surprised by the price, but he bought the device. (neutral; استغرب with من)
Aspect and negation
Form X takes the ordinary Lebanese aspect system. The perfect gives a bounded event; the b-imperfect gives a habit or state; عم + b-imperfect frames an ongoing event; رح + bare imperfect gives a projected event.
استعملت التطبيق مبارح.
istaʿmalet et-taṭbīʾ mbēreḥ.
I used the app yesterday. (neutral; affirmative perfect)
ما استعملت التطبيق مبارح.
ma istaʿmalet et-taṭbīʾ mbēreḥ.
I didn't use the app yesterday. (neutral; negative perfect)
بكرا رح نستعمل القاعة الكبيرة.
bokra raḥ nistaʿmel el-ʾāʿa l-kbīre.
Tomorrow we'll use the large hall. (professional; future plus bare Form X)
No MSA subjunctive ending is added after رح, and the form number itself does not signal past, present, or future.
A dialogue: formal inquiry versus ordinary asking
استفسرت من الشركة عن الضمان؟
istafsaret min esh-sharike ʿan eḍ-ḍamēn?
Maya: Did you inquire with the company about the warranty? (professional dialogue)
إيه، سألتن مبارح وقالوا الضمان بيضل سنة.
ē, saʾalton mbēreḥ w-ʾālo eḍ-ḍamēn byiḍall sane.
Nadim: Yes, I asked them yesterday, and they said the warranty lasts a year. (neutral dialogue; everyday سأل rather than more formal استفسر)
Common Mistakes
Treating استـ as an automatic “request” prefix
❌ استعملت المدير إجازة.
Incorrect — استعمل means ‘use,’ not ‘request’; this invented frame does not ask for leave.
✅ طلبت من المدير إجازة.
ṭalabet min el-mdīr izhēze.
I asked the manager for leave.
Omitting a lexical preposition
❌ استفدت الشرح.
Incorrect — استفاد selects من before the source of benefit.
✅ استفدت من الشرح.
istafadet min esh-sharḥ.
I benefited from the explanation.
Keeping b- after رح
❌ بكرا رح بيستعمل القاعة الكبيرة.
Incorrect — رح selects the bare imperfect يستعمل.
✅ بكرا رح يستعمل القاعة الكبيرة.
bokra raḥ yistaʿmel el-ʾāʿa l-kbīre.
Tomorrow he'll use the large hall.
Regularizing a final-weak Form X stem
❌ هالوضع بيستدعى حل سريع.
Incorrect — the b-imperfect of final-weak استدعى is بيستدعي, with final ي.
✅ هالوضع بيستدعي حل سريع.
hal-waḍʿ byistadʿe ḥall sarīʿ.
This situation calls for a quick solution.
Key Takeaways
Form X is recognizable from استـ, but request, evaluation, becoming, and lexical meanings coexist. Learn principal parts, valency, and register for each verb: استفسر عن, استفاد من, transitive استعمل, intransitive استقرّ. Verify the root rather than counting surface letters, apply the ordinary Lebanese aspect system, preserve weak and geminate alternations, and never manufacture a Form X verb merely because an English meaning seems to fit the historical template.
