A weak root contains w or y in a position where Lebanese morphology may turn it into a long vowel, a glide, or zero. That is why قالʾāl “he said,” بيقولbyiʾūl “he says,” and قلتʾelt “I said” look less alike than three forms of a strong verb.
"Weak" is a traditional morphological label, not a judgment about pronunciation. These verbs are among the most frequent words in Lebanese. The practical method is to learn several principal parts and compare related nouns; one surface form often cannot reveal the root safely. The fuller verbal paradigms appear in Weak Verbs: System Overview.
Three positions for a weak radical
| Type | Root position | Family example | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| initial-weak | w/y is C₁ | وصل wiṣel, بيوصل byūṣal | the initial glide interacts with prefixes and vowels |
| hollow | w/y is C₂ | قال ʾāl, بيقول byiʾūl, قلت ʾelt | the middle radical alternates with long or short vowels |
| final-weak | w/y is C₃ | حكى ḥaka, بيحكي byiḥke, حكيت ḥakēt | the final radical surfaces differently before endings |
وصل الباص متأخر، بس نحنا وصلنا عالوقت.
wiṣel el-bāṣ mtʾakhkhar, bass niḥna wiṣelna ʿa-l-waʾet.
The bus arrived late, but we arrived on time. (informal; initial-weak verb)
قال إنو بيقول الحقيقة، بس أنا ما صدقته.
ʾāl inno byiʾūl el-ḥaʾīʾa, bass ana ma ṣaddaʾto.
He said he was telling the truth, but I didn't believe him. (informal; hollow verb, urban ق = ʾ)
حكيت معها، وبعدين هي حكت مع المدير.
ḥakēt maʿa, w-baʿdēn hiyye ḥakat maʿ el-mdīr.
I spoke with her, and then she spoke with the manager. (informal; final-weak stem before two endings)
The labels predict where to look for alternation. They do not predict every vowel; each verb still needs verified principal parts.
An initial-weak family: w-ṣ-l
The w-ṣ-l family makes the first radical visible across nouns and derived verbs even where connected speech compresses it.
| Family member | Reading | Function |
|---|---|---|
| وصل | wiṣel | arrived, reached |
| بيوصل | byūṣal | arrives, reaches |
| واصل | wāṣel | having arrived; here |
| وصول | wuṣūl | arrival (neutral/formal) |
| وصّل | waṣṣal | delivered; drove someone somewhere |
| توصيل | tawṣīl | delivery, transport (neutral/commercial) |
بعتلي رسالة بس توصل، وإذا في توصيل منطلب أكل.
bʿatle risēle bass tōṣal, w-iza fī tawṣīl mnṭlob akel.
Message me when you arrive, and if there's delivery, we'll order food. (informal)
The root helps connect arrival and causing something to reach a destination. Still, توصيل has developed commercial meanings such as food delivery, and those meanings must be learned from use.
Hollow roots compress the middle radical
In hollow verbs, C₂ is historically w or y. In the short perfect, it often appears as a long vowel; before some consonant-initial endings, that vowel shortens. The nonpast may reveal a different long vowel.
| Root | 3sg perfect | 1sg perfect | Nonpast |
|---|---|---|---|
| q-w-l | قال ʾāl | قلت ʾelt | بيقول byiʾūl |
| b-y-ʿ | باع bēʿ | بعت biʿt | بيبيع byibīʿ |
قلتله ما يبيع السيارة قبل ما يحكي معنا.
ʾeltello ma ybīʿ es-sayyāra ʾabel ma yiḥke maʿna.
I told him not to sell the car before speaking with us. (informal; two different weak-root families)
قال and باع share the surface CāC/CēC compression, but one has w and the other y in the root. The long vowel alone does not identify which one.
Two unrelated roots can share a weak surface pattern
| Surface form | Root evidence | Related noun | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| قال ʾāl | بيقول byiʾūl | قول ʾawl | say |
| باع bēʿ | بيبيع byibīʿ | بيع bēʿ | sell |
The pattern tells you “hollow verb,” not the lexical consonant or meaning. English has irregular alternations such as sing/sang/sung, but Arabic weak families also distribute w/y across verbs and nouns.
Final-weak roots rebuild their edge before endings
With final-weak verbs, the unsuffixed perfect, nonpast, and suffixed perfect can show different final material. The h-k-y family is especially useful in Lebanese conversation.
| Form | Reading | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| حكى | ḥaka | unsuffixed perfect |
| بيحكي | byiḥke | nonpast with final ي |
| حكيت | ḥakēt | consonant-initial perfect ending |
| حكاها | ḥakāha | object suffix after an extended stem |
| حكي | ḥake | talk, speech |
| حكاية | ḥkēye | story, tale |
حكاها متل ما سمعها، بلا ما يزيد شي.
ḥakāha mitel ma simiʿha, bla ma yzīd shi.
He told it the way he heard it, without adding anything. (informal)
The change between ى، ي، ا is morphological, not free spelling variation. The consonant skeleton used in a particular form must be learned with that form.
Spelling gives clues, not a mechanical answer
An internal ا, و, or ي may reflect a weak radical, a long vowel in a pattern, or ordinary lexical spelling. Conversely, a weak radical may not be visible in the shortest form. Do not declare every alif “really w” or every ya “really y” without family evidence.
من كلمة قال لحالا ما فيك تعرف كل العيلة.
min kilmet ʾāl la-ḥāla ma fīk tiʿraf kill el-ʿayle.
From the word ʾāl alone, you can't recover the whole family. (neutral explanation)
Derived forms can change valency
Weakness and derivation are separate dimensions. وصل is normally intransitive in its arrival sense; Form II وصّل adds an affected participant and often a destination.
وصلت عالبيت ولا بعدك بالطريق؟
wiṣelt ʿa-l-bēt walla baʿdak biṭ-ṭarīʾ?
Maya: Did you get home, or are you still on the way? (informal dialogue; وصل is intransitive)
وصلت، والسواق وصلني لباب البناية.
wiṣelt, wis-sawwāʾ waṣṣalne la-bēb el-binēye.
Karim: I arrived, and the driver dropped me at the building entrance. (informal dialogue; وصّل takes a passenger object)
Pattern knowledge suggests a causative relationship, but وصّل also has established senses such as delivering food or connecting a cable. Learn the complement frame with each sense.
Common Mistakes
Recovering the weak radical from one long vowel
❌ كل فعل فيه ا بالنص جذره فيه و.
Incorrect — hollow roots may contain w or y, and not every medial alif diagnoses a weak root.
✅ قال من قول، وباع من بيع.
ʾāl min ʾawl, w-bēʿ min bēʿ.
ʾĀl belongs with ʾawl, while bēʿ belongs with bēʿ ‘sale.’
Keeping the long vowel before every suffix
❌ أنا قالتله الحقيقة.
Incorrect — with the first-person ending, قال has the short stem قلت.
✅ أنا قلتله الحقيقة.
ana ʾeltello l-ḥaʾīʾa.
I told him the truth.
Treating final spellings as interchangeable
❌ حكى وحكيت وحكاها نفس النهاية.
Incorrect — the final-weak stem changes systematically before different endings and clitics.
✅ حكى القصة، حكيت معه، وحكاها لرفيقه.
ḥaka l-ʾeṣṣa, ḥakēt maʿo, w-ḥakāha la-rfīʾo.
He told the story, I spoke with him, and he told it to his friend.
Assuming a weak root has one predictable derived meaning
❌ وصل ووصل نفس الفعل ونفس المفعول.
Incorrect — in the arrival sense وصل is intransitive, while the doubled verb وصّل introduces what or whom is delivered.
✅ وصل الطلب، والسواق وصله لعنا.
wiṣel eṭ-ṭalab, wis-sawwāʾ waṣṣalo la-ʿinna.
The order arrived, and the driver delivered it to us.
Key Takeaways
Weak roots contain w/y in the initial, middle, or final radical position. Those glides may surface as consonants, long vowels, short vowels, or changing stem edges. Compare perfect, nonpast, suffixed forms, maṣdars, and derivatives before recovering the root. Then learn valency and register separately, because weak morphology predicts form—not the whole lexical entry.
