The spelling لزم belongs to two related but grammatically different systems. Everyday invariant لازمlāzem introduces necessity: لازم روح “I have to go.” Finite lexical لزم / بيلزمlizim / byilzam can mean “be required, prove necessary, stick to, stay with,” but much of that paradigm is restricted to fixed, professional, or formal-contact language.
This distinction prevents a common false analysis. In لازم تروحي, لازم does not agree with a female addressee; lower تروحي does. In هالورقة بتلزمك, however, finite بتلزم agrees with feminine الورقة, while ـك names the person who needs it.
The everyday modal لازم is invariant
Modal لازم stays the same for every person and selects a bare imperfect. It covers firm obligation, practical need, advice, and evidence-based inference. Time comes from context or from كان لازم.
لازم نراجع الأرقام قبل ما نبعت العرض.
lāzem nrēzheʿ el-arʾām ʾabel ma nibʿat el-ʿarḍ.
We need to review the figures before sending the proposal. (professional spoken Lebanese; obligation)
ضو المكتب بعده شاعل، لازم تكون المديرة هون.
ḍaww el-maktab baʿdo shēʿel, lāzem tkūn el-mdīra hōn.
The office light is still on; the manager must be here. (neutral; inference, not an order)
كان لازم خبرك مبارح، بس نسيت.
kēn lāzem khabberak mbēreḥ, bass nsēt.
I should have told you yesterday, but I forgot. (informal; unfulfilled past obligation)
Negation distinguishes scope: مش لازم تروح means “you do not have to go,” while لازم ما تروح means “you must not go.” The fuller modal system is treated on Obligation and Inference with لازم; this page focuses on the lexical contrast.
Complete finite perfect paradigm
Finite لزم has the Form I principal parts لزم / بيلزمlizim / byilzam. These forms are grammatically available, but their “adhere/stay with” sense is less productive in casual Beirut speech than alternatives such as ضلّ, التزم, or a more specific verb. Register labels matter here.
| Person | Form | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| أنا | لزمت | lzimt |
| إنت | لزمت | lzimt |
| إنتي | لزمتي | lzimte |
| هو | لزم | lizim |
| هي | لزمت | lizmit |
| نحنا | لزمنا | lzimna |
| إنتو | لزمتوا | lzimto |
| هني | لزموا | lizmo |
لزم البيت أسبوع بعد العملية بنصيحة الدكتور.
lizim el-bēt osbūʿ baʿd el-ʿamaliyye b-naṣīḥet ed-doktōr.
He stayed home for a week after the operation on the doctor's advice. (careful/formal-contact Lebanese)
لزموا التعليمات لآخر الرحلة وما صار معن شي.
lizmo t-taʿlīmāt la-ākhir er-riḥle w-ma ṣār maʿon she.
They stuck to the instructions until the end of the trip, and nothing happened to them. (careful speech; adherence)
In spontaneous conversation, التزموا بالتعليمات is often clearer for “they complied with the instructions,” and ضلّ بالبيت is more ordinary for “he stayed home.” A reference page should teach the finite verb without pretending all inherited senses are equally frequent.
Complete b-imperfect and bare imperfect
The nonpast stem has -ilzam-. In practice, impersonal 3sg بيلزم and bare يلزم are much more frequent than many other cells because requirements are often framed around a needed thing or condition.
| Person | b-imperfect | Bare imperfect |
|---|---|---|
mnistaʿmil el-moṣṭalaḥ er-rasme bass lamma yilzam.
We use the formal term only when necessary. (professional spoken Lebanese; fixed bare form after لما)
إذا بيلزم تعديل زغير، منعمله قبل النشر.
iza byilzam taʿdīl zghīr, mniʿmalo ʾabel en-nasher.
If a small revision is needed, we'll make it before publication. (professional; impersonal requirement)
The fixed expression إذا لزم الأمر “if necessary” is (formal) and preserves a more MSA-like style. In ordinary discussion, إذا لزم or إذا كان ضروري is lighter.
Needed thing plus experiencer clitic
Lebanese can attach an experiencer suffix to لازم or finite بيلزم: لازمني / بيلزمني “I need it; it is needed for me,” لازمك / بيلزمك “you need it,” لازمنا “we need it.” The needed item is logically the requirement; the suffix names who needs it. It is therefore not an ordinary direct-object pattern like English I need it.
| Experiencer | Common form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| me | لازمني lāzemne | I need it |
| you m. | لازمك lāzemak | you need it |
| her | لازمها lāzema | she needs it |
| us | لازمنا lāzemna | we need it |
| them | لازمهن lāzemon | they need it |
لازمني نسخة عن العقد قبل الاجتماع.
lāzemne noskha ʿan el-ʿaʾd ʾabel el-izhtimēʿ.
I need a copy of the contract before the meeting. (professional spoken Lebanese; suffixed need)
هيدي كل الأوراق يلي بتلزمك للتسجيل.
hayde kill el-awrāʾ yalle btilzamak lit-taszhīl.
These are all the documents you need for registration. (professional/service context; nonhuman plural with feminine-singular agreement and an experiencer clitic)
Other speakers prefer بدّي or بحتاج for personal need. The clitic frame remains important for comprehension, but it should not replace every English need mechanically.
Imperative and active participle: real but restricted
Lexical commands are الزمilzam, الزميilzame, and الزمواilzamo. They mean “stick to / remain with,” not “be necessary.” In Beirut speech they sound firm, elevated, or formulaic; خليك or التزم بـ is often more natural.
الزم حدودك وما تدخل بموضوع ما خصك.
ilzam ḥdūdak w-ma tidkhal b-mawḍūʿ ma khaṣṣak.
Stay within your limits and don't interfere in something that doesn't concern you. (firm/formulaic command)
The active participle لازمlāzem, feminine لازمة, plural لازمين, historically belongs to the same family. Outside modal use it can mean “sticking to, constantly accompanying,” but this is lexical and context-dependent (formal/literary or fixed). The everyday modal is invariant and should not be analyzed as agreeing participial morphology.
هو لازم البيت من وقت ما مرض.
huwwe lāzem el-bēt min waʾet ma miriḍ.
He has kept to the house since he became ill. (careful/literary-leaning Lebanese; lexical participle)
Formal cognates are separate verbs
التزم بـ “comply with/commit to” and ألزم “oblige” are productive in professional and formal-contact speech. مستلزمات means “supplies/requirements.” Shared root letters explain the semantic family, but they do not make the forms interchangeable.
الشركة التزمت بالموعد، بس ما ألزمت الموظفين يشتغلوا بالعطلة.
esh-shirke ltazamit bil-mawʿed, bass ma alzamit el-mwaẓẓafīn yishtighlo bil-ʿoṭle.
The company kept to the deadline, but it did not require the employees to work on the holiday. (professional; related derived verbs)
Common Mistakes
Conjugating invariant modal لازم
❌ هي لازمة تروح هلق.
Incorrect for obligation — modal لازم does not agree; the lower verb does.
✅ هي لازم تروح هلق قبل الزحمة.
hiyye lāzem trūḥ hallaʾ ʾabel ez-zaḥme.
She has to leave now before the traffic.
Keeping b- after modal لازم
❌ لازم منبعت النسخة اليوم.
Incorrect — modal لازم selects bare نبعت.
✅ لازم نبعت النسخة قبل آخر الدوام.
lāzem nibʿat en-noskha ʾabel ākhir ed-dawēm.
We have to send the copy before the end of the workday.
Confusing no obligation with prohibition
❌ مش لازم تفوت هون، إذا المقصود ممنوع تفوت.
Incorrect for a prohibition — this normally says entering is unnecessary.
✅ لازم ما تفوت هون بلا إذن.
lāzem ma tfūt hōn bla izin.
You must not enter here without permission.
Treating every English “need” as لازمني
❌ لازمني روح، إذا المقصود عليي التزام إني روح.
Awkward for ordinary verbal obligation — use invariant لازم plus the bare action.
✅ لازم روح هلق، ولازمني المصاري قبل ما فل.
lāzem rūḥ hallaʾ, w-lāzemne l-maṣāre ʾabel ma fill.
I have to go now, and I need the money before I leave.
Key Takeaways
Invariant لازم + bare verb is the ordinary modal of obligation and inference. Finite لزم / بيلزم survives in requirement, adherence, and fixed-register uses; it is not simply the modal conjugated. Suffixed لازمني / بيلزمني packages the needed item as the requirement and the person as an experiencer. Formal relatives such as التزم and ألزم have their own valency and register.
