Lebanese جاوبzhāwab means “answer, respond.” A person is commonly direct—جاوبني—while a question often follows على: جاوب عالسؤال. Direct جاوب السؤال is also natural, especially with a particular question in view. A telephone normally takes على: جاوب عالتلفون.
The verb is Form III. Its first vowel is long in the perfect, while the imperfect is بيجاوبbyzhēweb. Ordinary urban Lebanese pronounces ج as zh; the pattern is situated on the Form III reference page.

بيجاوب بهدوء حتى لما السؤال يكون مستفز.
byzhēweb b-hodūʾ ḥatta lamma s-suʾāl ykūn mistafizz.
He answers calmly even when the question is provocative. (neutral; habitual b-imperfect)
Imperative and current answering
Commands are جاوبzhēweb, جاوبيzhēwbe, and جاوبواzhēwbo. Negative commands use ما تجاوب. After رح or بدّي, the same bare stem appears with the required person prefix.
جاوبيني بصراحة: فيكي تخلصي الشغل للجمعة؟
zhēwbīne b-ṣarāḥa: fīke tkhallṣe sh-shighel lil-zhomʿa?
Answer me honestly: can you finish the work by Friday? (addressing one woman; person clitic)
رح جاوبك بعد الاجتماع لما اتأكد من الرقم.
raḥ zhēwbak baʿd el-izhtimēʿ lamma itʾakkad min er-raʾam.
I'll answer you after the meeting once I verify the figure. (neutral; bare 1sg plus clitic)
For an event underway, Beirut speech uses عم + b-imperfect: عم بيجاوب. Active participle مجاوبmzhēweb often presents a result—someone has replied—or a responsive stance, rather than simply replacing the progressive.
بعده ما مجاوب عالإيميل، مع إنو قراه الصبح.
baʿdo ma mzhēweb ʿal-īmēl, maʿ enno ʾarā ṣ-ṣoboḥ.
He still hasn't replied to the email, even though he read it this morning. (professional; result-state participle)
Answering people, questions, and messages
A person is most compactly expressed as a direct object, including suffixes جاوبني، جاوبك، جاوبه، جاوبها، جاوبنا، جاوبكن، جاوبهن. Colloquial جاوب عليي also occurs with the broader sense “respond to me,” especially when contact or responsiveness is in focus; it is not simply an ungrammatical version of جاوبني. The content of the reply may follow إنو or appear as direct speech.
سألتها إذا فاضية، وجاوبتني إنو عندها موعد.
saʾalta iza fāḍye, w-zhāwabitne enno ʿinda mawʿed.
I asked whether she was free, and she answered that she had an appointment. (informal; person clitic and إنو-content)
A question can be direct or follow على: جاوب السؤال / جاوب عالسؤال. The prepositional frame foregrounds responding to the question; the direct frame treats it as the thing answered. Both occur in ordinary Lebanese, and school or test contexts make the direct frame especially easy to hear.
جاوب عأول سؤالين وترك التالت للآخر.
zhāwab ʿa-awwal suʾālēn w-tarak et-tēlit lil-ākhir.
He answered the first two questions and left the third until the end. (educational context; على-question frame)
Messages and email often pattern like questions: جاوب عالرسالة/عالإيميل “reply to the message/email.” With a person, the direct clitic is the clearest learner default; على + person shifts toward “respond to” and belongs to a somewhat broader colloquial frame.
ما قدرت جاوب عالرسالة لأن الرابط ما كان عم يفتح.
ma ʾdirit zhēweb ʿar-risēle laʾann er-rābeṭ ma kēn ʿam yiftaḥ.
I couldn't reply to the message because the link wouldn't open. (informal; message with على)
Answering the phone
Lebanese commonly says جاوب عالتلفون or ردّ عالتلفون “answer the phone.” The device is not treated as a person. For a caller, use the person-object frame: جاوبني “he answered me.”
جاوب عالتلفون، يمكن شركة التوصيل وصلت.
zhēweb ʿat-tilifōn, yimken shirket et-tawṣīl wiṣlit.
Answer the phone; maybe the delivery company has arrived. (informal command)
English answer the door does not use جاوب. Say فتح الباب “open the door.” Likewise, hostile “answer back” is usually ردّ عليه or a more specific description, not a phrasal extension of جاوب.
The nouns جواب and مجاوبة
Everyday جوابzhawēb means “answer/reply,” plural أجوبة. The regular Form III verbal noun مجاوبةmzhāwabe names the act or practice of answering and is more restricted, often (formal/professional). Do not force the maṣdar where ordinary speech chooses جواب or a finite verb.
طريقة مجاوبته عالأسئلة كانت مرتبة وواضحة.
ṭarīʾet mzhāwabto ʿal-asʾile kēnet mrattabe w-wāḍḥa.
His way of answering the questions was organized and clear. (professional; marked action noun)
Common Mistakes
Doubling the person frame
❌ ما جاوبني عليي من مبارح.
Incorrect — do not express the same person twice as both a direct suffix and an على phrase.
✅ ما جاوبني من مبارح مع إني ذكرته.
ma zhāwabne min mbēreḥ maʿ inne zakkarto.
He hasn't answered me since yesterday even though I reminded him.
Using the wrong preposition with a question
❌ جاوب من هالسؤال بسرعة.
Incorrect — a question can be direct or take على, but it does not take من in this frame.
✅ جاوب عهالسؤال بسرعة وبعدين منشرح الباقي.
zhēweb ʿa-hal-suʾāl b-sorʿa w-baʿdēn mnishraḥ el-bāʾe.
Answer this question quickly, then we'll explain the rest.
Translating “answer the door” literally
❌ جاوب الباب، حدا عم يدق.
Incorrect English calque — doors are opened, not answered with جاوب.
✅ افتح الباب، حدا عم يدق.
iftaḥ el-bēb, ḥada ʿam yidoʾʾ.
Open the door; someone's knocking.
Keeping b- after رح
❌ رح بجاوبك بعدين.
Incorrect in the Beirut baseline — رح selects the bare form.
✅ رح جاوبك بعدين بس اعرف شو صار.
raḥ zhēwbak baʿdēn bass aʿref shū ṣār.
I'll answer you later once I know what happened.
Key Takeaways
Learn جاوب–بيجاوب–جاوب as a Form III lexical set. The compact person frame is direct; questions allow both a direct object and على, while messages, email, and telephone frames commonly use على. Use عم بيجاوب for an unfolding response, مجاوب for a result or stance, and everyday noun جواب for the answer itself.
